Unreliable WiFi on Macbook Pro 8.1

Hey y'all,
I've been using arch for a few months now and everything has been going well with the exception of how unreliable my internet connection is. Basically, I don't really have a problem connecting to the internet, but after using it for a minute the internet connection will suddenly drop and the only way to get it working again is to turn it off and on again. When I first started using arch in January the same problem was happening, but happened much less frequently. With more recent updates, however, the problem has become unbearable with more recent system updates. I have a brcm4331 wireless card and am using the b43 driver. I used the instructions from http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/b43/ to install the b43 firmware on my computer. I've searched around for others with the same proplem, but only found this https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=139911 which isn't with the same chip as mine, and the bcm4331 chip is not supported by the wl drivers. I also have another friend who's been on arch longer than I have and is having the exact same problems as I am.
Any help would be awesome! I can post any additional info that may be needed, though I'm a bit of a linux newb and may need help figuring out how to do things.

What is the wireless mailing list? Is it open to the public? I figure if I'm dealing with a chip that has little support that I ought to get on something like that if it would mean that I would know when to expect updates for it. I had seen before that broadcom intended to add 4331 support to the bcmsmac drivers, but that's been on their to do list for over a year and I don't want to wait around for them to eventually fix it. So a linux kernel patch sounds way better, even if 3.10 won't be coming too soon.

  • How do I use my Time Capsule to back up my wife's MacBook Pro running 10.4.

I just installed a Time Capsule. I've extended the range with two Airport Expresses. I've connected my MacBook running 10.6.3 to the wireless network. I've connected my wife's MacBook Pro running 10.4.11 to it. I've connected my wife's 3G iPhone to it and my first gen iPhone to it and our Apple TV to it. All devices can connect to the internet. I've connected the Time Capsule to the printer and printed wirelessly from both computers.
I've backed up my MacBook and seen that the Time Machine is backing up my MacBook as it should.
How do use the Time Capsule to back up my wife's MacBook Pro running 10.4.11? I've tried connecting them via ethernet cable and via USB cable. In both cases the Time Capsule failed to show up as an external drive and wasn't seen by the 10.4.11 back up utility.
How do people do this? (Other than convincing their wives to let them upgrade their MacBook Pro to 10.6.3?)

That really is your best option. Sooner or later, you're going to have a problem with the "other" data on your Time Capsule, since the backups of your Mac will, eventually, fill up all the available empty space. That will, of course, limit the space available for the other backups.
There's a very cumbersome workaround in the blue box of #Q3 of the Using TIME MACHINE with a TIME CAPSULE *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
Another is to connect a USB drive to the Time Capsule, partition it if desired, and back up one Mac to it and the other to the TC's internal drive.

  • I have a similar question to the one Brendan posted a day or two ago. My wife's MacBook Pro will find my library for home sharing, but my ACER will not even display the home sharing icon. Home sharing on, latest version on iTunes.

I want to get some music from my wife's MacBook Pro via Home Sharing. We both have Home Sharing turned on. Her's displays the Home Sharing icon, and recognizes my library. My ACER will not display the Home Sharing icon, and I cannot access her library. I have verified I have the latest version of iTunes, I have turned Home Sharing off and on again, and still no icon.

Replace the Time Capsule with one that has a larger hard drive. Or erase the one you have and start a new set of backups or backup one of the computers to a different backup drive.

  • My Wife's MacBook Pro not booting

    Hi All,
I hope someone can help, My wife's macbook pro (bought early 2011) was suffering from split screen then freezing. I read online that it could be due to logicboard issues so I did the Apple Hardware Test (AHT) and it said everything was fine. So while opening final cut pro, the Mac froze and nothing was happening, so we had to do a hard shutdown (held down power button).
The next thing we know is, chimes, loading with Apple logo then grey screen. So recovery mode => loading screen with Apple logo and bar at bottom => Frozen blue screen.
I read some more online, did reset of PRAMand SMC. Did the Internet recovery. held "option" and selected recovery (now instead of showing Macintosh HD it shows "EFI boot")
There was no CD that came with the Mac so i cant even do a repair.
I am getting pretty desperate on what options are left, any other suggestions would be helpful.

    KimoMansour,
since your wife’s MacBook Pro was bought in early 2011, it will have originally come from the factory with two grey model-specific installation DVDs. (Models that came from the factory with Lion or later didn’t come with grey installation DVDs in the box, but Lion wasn’t released until July 2011.) You can buy a replacement pair of these grey DVDs from Apple, but not through the online Apple store — you’ll need to call Apple to get the particular pair that her model needs; have her MacBook Pro’s serial number handy when you call. One of the grey DVDs has the original bootable version of Mac OS X for her model; the other one has the Apple Hardware Test and the iLife apps for her model.

  • How do I get my iPhone text messages to stop showing up on my wife's MacBook Pro?

Not that I have anything to hide of course
My wife and I have shared an iTunes account for years. Now that it is tied to an Apple ID, we share that too. Of course the problem them becomes since we both have iPhones, the Apple ID is linked to 2 phone numbers. This has not been a problem on our phones, as I found in the settings where I delete her phone number from the Messages program and she deletes mine. But she got a new MacBook Pro last week...and it is displaying text message associated with both of our phones. So she sees both her own conversations and mine. I haven't been able to find in the settings where I can remove my phone number from the messaging program on her MacBook Pro. Is there a way to stop this from happening?
She's also wondering if there's a way to only show the messages on her MacBook Pro when she's logged on to it. She's been frustated that if she hasn't been on all day, when she logs on all the texts she's sent/received will show as new messages even though she's already read them on her iPhone. I presume that the only way to stop that is to disable the messages app altogether, if that's even possible?
    Thanks!

Thank you for the help! I also had that problem, except my have a samsung phone and wasn't getting any texts because they were all going to my macbook.
I was also going to system preferences. so, Thank you!!!

  • How do I print from wifi-connected MacBook Pro to printer connected via USB to Win7 PC?

This is really frustrating, and I did not think that anything could be this difficult on a Mac. I have a Windows 7 Home Premium desktop PC connected via ethernet cable to wireless router, and a printer connected to the PC via USB. I recently bought my first ever Mac - a MacBook Pro, which is connected via wifi through the same router. All I want to do is to print files from the MacBook Pro on the printer connected to the PC. I have spent a LOT of time searching all over the web. Have tried some 2 or 3 different methods but none of them work for me, e.g. I shared the printer on the Win7 desktop and then added the printer on the MBP with the IP option with LPD/LPR Protocol, after enabling LPD Print Service on the PC. The printer gets added but when I give the command to print from the Mac, the print job shows up on the printer queue but the "Printing" soon changes to "Error Printing" (or something like that) and nothing gets printed. Then, I have to switch off the printer, remove the print job from the queue and switch on the printer again to get it out of the error state.
I also tried setting up the printer on the MBP using CUPS Admin interface, i.e. localhost:631. Again, printer gets added but document does not print. The third way I tried to add the printer was using the Windows option in the Add Printer dialog, and typing in an smb: URL but no luck with that, either.
Please, can anyone help me? This is driving me crazy
    Oh, and the devices are:
    1) Windows 7 Home Premium Desktop PC
    2) MacBook Pro running OS X Mountain Lion
    3) HP Deskjet F2110 printer
    Thanks...
    - Ajoy

First Install Bonjour for Windows on your Windows machine. This will allow the printer to be discovered.

    hi,

Since this is a new machine and under warranty, simply go to Apple and let them handle it.

  • 10.4.9 and Wifi crash macbook pro

Installed 10.4.9 yesterday (without waiting for the reviews - stupid of me I know).
When it tried to connect to my wifi network it now crashes and I have to reboot. Sometimes it crashes even at boot. I can boot in safe mode without a problem, and at work where there is no wifi network it works without a problem. I have the 11n enabler installed and a 11n router (dlink).
I have reinstalled the update, reinstalled the enabler, verified permissions, looked at the logs but there is nothing special in there. I ran the hardware test and disk utility from the install dvd. Nothing works.
So now I have no choice but to reinstall the os and manually update to 10.4.8 not this crap 10.4.9.
I am desperate I really don't want to reinstall the os and all my apps.
If anybody has any idea please help!
    Thanks.
    Dragos.
PS: I cannot believe apple would release an update with so many bugs. They should fire the person that approved this update.
macbook pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Well I found a work around.
Have renamed the network and set the router to 11g only (seems the 11n functionality was causing the problem). Lost the 11n functionality but I guess is not a big deal. I hope there are no other issues.
Until last night this laptop was one of the most stable machines I ever had. I hope this was a one time incident.
I also deleted the network key in the keychain and used onyx to clean the system caches.
Hope this helps somebody else that has this problem.
Now I have to wait for a fix for the 11n network.

  • Can't connect to netgear wifi with macbook pro

I have a Netgear N900 router and although I can find the signal I cannot connect to the wifi.  Each time I clicked on it, it would fail to connect and say to move closer to the router.  However the router has already been upgraded to make the signal strong enough to reach my room.  I have tried restarting the router and it has not worked.  I have gone into the router through my browser and reserved an IP address and changed my network settings on my computer to "using DHCP with manual address" and entered the reserved IP address.  I restarted my computer but now my macbook pro says that it is connected but I can't connect to the internet when i open a browser.  I'm not sure if I'm not reserving the IP address correctly or if there is another solution to this problem.  If anyone has encountered this problem and found a solution that would be amazing.  I have been trying for a month now to fix this. Thanks!

  • Can not turn on wifi on MacBook Pro

    Hello
I have a MacBook Pro late 2011 running Mac osx lion 10.7.5
My problem is that my computer suddenly tourned wifi off and it won't turn on again. I've searched the problem on the web (with the iPad, since the MacBook had no connection...) but no solution has worked.
    What I tried until now:
    -restart
-disable the wifi connection in system preferences then restart
    - disable, eliminate then recreate the wifi service in system preferences then restart
    - restart in safe mode (here the wifi worked, but when I restarted the computer again I was back at the start)
    - repair permissions on HD (4 times) then restart

Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
Click Go then move all the files in the SystemConfiguration folder to the Trash.
Turn off the base station for about ten seconds then turn it back on.
    See if makes a differrence.
Your Mac will generate a new SystemConfiguration folder for you.
    Then try your Wi-Fi.

  • Connecting to wifi on MacBook Pro

I'm having trouble connecting to wifi with my brand new MacBook Pro.  I do as asked, put in my wifi network name (home), password, but for some reason it isn't working.  This worked fine with my ipad and iphone.  Do I need another device other than my wireless router?  Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

  • Strong WiFi, but MacBook Pro says no internet connection.

Even though I have a strong WiFi signal (symbol in upper right corner of screen), Safari says I have no Internet connection.  Mail also.
So I have to restart my router every 5-10 minutes.  It works for a few minutes and then no connection again.
My iPad3 still has a connection when the MacBook Pro says none is available.
    Router is a 2-Wire 1800HG.
    Thanks for any suggestions!

Try changing the channel in the router's admin area.
