Unresolved cross-references error in FM 10, but same ref-s working in PDF

Hi everyone,
I've come across an issue I can't fix: when opening an .fm file in FrameMaker I get an error message saying the document has unresolved cross-references. The Find/Change check also shows that all cross-references in the file are broken, but from the Cross-references pod I can jump to the right marker by clicking Go to source.
At the same time when I choose to save the book as PDF, these same references in the resulting PDF work just fine: they are clickable and lead exactly to the right location. The .book and the .fm files are all stored locally, so no networking or sharing involved. Markers added automatically, source type for references is Paragraph.
Could you please help me figure out how to fix the links that seem to be working just fine?
Thanks,
Svetlana.

> What is a MIF wash and how would you do that?
Maker Interchange Format (human-readable FM document markup).
In FM10 & later, I think it's a pulldown menu item, but what it does is:
save all files as .mif in MIF[latest] format, including the .book
(if by hand, save in place to .fm and .book to make this easier)
close all files
open the ( MIF ) files
If you do it manually, to .mif file names, be sure to open the body.mif files first, and resave them as .fm before opening the book.mif file.
This process at least flags, and may fix or correct any data structures that aren't valid MIF.

  • Cross-references error

    HI everyone,
I have a book file with about 20 chapters. These chapters all have a large number of cross-references in them that link from chapter to chapter. Since I now have to revise last year's 2010 edition of the book, I went through and changed the name of each chapter file by updating 2010 to 2011 in the chapter name. Now when I open a chapter, the cross references that reference text in other chapters all have a question mark icon next them and if I try to double click it I get the following error:
"Hyperlink destination document not found. Please verify the documents location in the hyperlinks panel before choosing this hyperlink"
This doesn't mean that I have to manually go through and relink the cross-references to the newly named chapters does it? This would take ages and it doesn't make sense that I would have to do this simply because I changed a file name. Is there a quicker way to solve this problem?
    Really appreciate any advice offered.

    Thanks for the reply,
Yeah I could change them back but I need the file names to be different - it's a 2011 version now, not a 2010 version. Is there no other workaround that keeps the file names intact?

  • ODI : how to raise cross reference error before loading into Essbase?

Hi John .. if you read my post, I want to say that you impress me! really, thank for your blog.
    Today, my problem is :
    - I received a bad quality data file from ERP extract
    - I have cross reference table (Source ==> Target)
    - >> How to raise the error before loading into Essbase !
My Idea is the following, (first of all, I'm not sure if it is a good one, and also I meet issue to do it in ODI !)
    - Step 1 : make JOIN between data.txt and cross-reference Table ==> Create a table DATA_STEP1 in the ODISTAGING schema (the columns of DATA_STEP1 are the addition of columns of data.txt those of cross-references Tables (... there is more than 20 columns in my case)
    - Step 2 : Control if there is no NULL value in the Target Column (NULL means that the data.txt file contains value that are not defined in my cross reference Table) by using Filter ( Filter = Target_Account IS NULL or Target_Entity IS NULL or ...)
The result of this interface is send to reject.txt file - if reject.txt file is not empty then a mail is sent to the administrator
    - Step 3 : make the opposite : Filter NOT (Target_Account IS NULL or Target_Entity IS NULL ... ) ==> the result is sent in DATA_STEP3 Table
    - Step 4 : run properly the mapping : source : DATA_STEP3 (the clean and verified data !) with cross reference Tables and send data into Essbase - NORMALY, there is not rejected record !
My main problem is : what is the right IKM to send data into the DATA_STEP1, or DATA_STEP3 Table, which are Oracle Table in my ODISTAGING Schema ! I thy with IKM Oracle Incremental Update but I get error, and actually I don't need an update (which is time consumming), I just need an INSERT !
I'm just lookiing for an 'IKM SQL to Oracle" ....
    regards
    xavier

Thanks john : very speed !
I understood better now which IKM is useful.
I found other information about the error followup with ODI : http://blogs.oracle.com/dataintegration/2009/10/did_you_know_that_odi_generate.html
and I decided to activate Integrity Constorl in ODI :
    I load :
    - data.txt in ODITEMP.T_DATA
    - transco_account.csv in ODITEMP.T_TRANSCO_ACCOUNT
    - transco_entity.csv in ODITEMP.T_TRANSCO_ENTITY
    - and so on ...
    - Moreover I create integrity constraints between T_DATA and T_TRANSCO_ACCOUNT and T_TRANSCO_ENTITY ... so I expected that ODI will raise for me in E$_DATA (the error table) the bad records !
However I have one issue when loading data.txt into T_DATA because I have no ID or Primary Key ... I read in a training book that I could use a SEQUENCE ... I try but unsuccessful ... :-(
Is there another simple way to create a Primary Key automaticaly (T_DATA is in an oracle Schema of course) ?thanks in advance

  • Unresolved cross reference - unresolved text inset

Is ti possible having at a book all crosses unresolved just because of file renamig??
it's hard to understand the philosophy of resolving crosses, any knowledge would be welcome

Cross-references and text insets are links between two different places. An important part of defining the location of each place is the file name. If you change one of those filenames, FrameMaker can no longer resolve the link.
Using the methodolody that Van outlines, you can safely rename files. This is because FrameMaker watches what you do and automatically makes the necessary updates within the book. If you make changes outside of FrameMaker, though, it has no knowledge of the changes and simply cannot resolve the original links in the future.

  • Cross-reference tag errors in Trados preventing MIF creation

Our Spanish translator provides files from translation memory with unresolved cross-reference text in English; when we update the book the cross-references are translated to Spanish and the page numbers are also updated within the cross-reference text. After our DTP process, when we return the files to the translator to update the translation memory, he gets a misalignment in the tags and Trados prevents him from creating a MIF file. Trados won't let him ignore the cross-references. We're using unstructured FrameMaker 2009 and he has Trados 2007. We're in the midst of a deadline for a project due next week and he wants to charge us an enormous fee to fix the tags manually. Can anyone suggest a solution the translator can use? I'm a newbie forum user, but I checked the FAQ and did not see anything. Thanks! Sue

As far as I know, FM cross-references (which came into Trados via MIF and S-Tagger) are handled as placeables. I suppose the mismatches stem from a "placeables differences penalty", which by default is 2%, even for otherwise exact matches.
A possible solution could be to impose no penalties for placeables in Trados, i.e. set the placeables differences penalty to 0%. But be careful, this may overshoot the mark, as there might be relevant differences in placeables that must be reviewed. I'm not aware of a setting in Trados where you could specify this more selectively.

  • Cross Reference Sources appearing in Story Editor view but not appearing in the Cross Ref pane

I have imported a Word document containing working cross references into an InDesign document. The vast majority of these cross references import correctly and link to their destinations within the document, however there are some that are not working. If I view the text frame in the story editor view, I can see these "broken" cross reference sources that came in from the Word doc but on selecting them I can see that there isnt a corresponding entry for it in the cross reference pane. As said, there are only a few that are behaving like this.
What could be causing these not to appear in the cross reference pane?
Obviously as they are not appearing in the list of cross references I can't update them, and also, as they are technically broken cross references, because a source exists for them but there is no corresponding entry in the pane, then on export to epub, InDesign crashes (If there is one broken cross reference in a document, export to Epub will crash indesign).
Also, to clarify, in the Word doc if I navigate to a cross reference that is failing once in InDesign, I can update it properly, and also navigate to its destination in the Word doc, so it's not as though these cross references are broken before coming into InDesign. Also I believe the destinations for these "broken" cross references are coming across properly to indesign too as I can see them in the story editor view.
Supposed Cross Reference source selected in Story Editor view on left, but no corresponding cross reference highlighted in pane on right:
    Technical Details:
    InDesign CS5.5 - Version 7.5.3
Microsoft Word 2010, File type .docx

I have found the possible cause of this problem!
If a table is used within the Word document somewhere between where the cross reference source is and its destination then that particular cross reference will be broken as described above in my initial post.
So the "fix" is to remove any occurances of a table in the Word document and the cross references come into InDesign perfectly. This is actually not a fix at all. I need to use tables in the Word document for layout purposes so if they break cross references if they stand between them and their destinations then I have to compromise, i.e. use tables but with no cross references in the document or vice versa.
I found a similar issue recently with index markers in Word causing a shift on the cross reference tags when bought into InDesign. The "fix" again for that was to remove all index markers from the Word document. See post about this here: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1043981
InDesign really needs to sort out the issues with importing of Word documents with cross references in them. If I can't use index markers and tables in a Word document without breaking its cross references then they can't claim to have the ability to import a Word document while maintaining its cross references into an InDesign document. It just doesnt work as ive painstakingly proven.

  • Cross-References coming from Word in FM 7.2

    Hi Folks,
I have a problem with the Cross-References. I create an EDD and Read/Write rules, and generate a conversion table. With it I'm converting all the my documentation in MS Word to Structured FM 7,2. It works well, but there two main problems that I can't solve. I spent a lot of time reading the Structure application Developer Guide, but I can't find a solution.
First one is a minor problem that I can solve with a script but, maybe I'm doing something wrong on FM and it is easy to fix on the conversion table. When I apply the conversion table it generate without problems the RootElement, and apply tags for the paragraphs and Character formats, but I can't do that put other tags that are not related with text. I mean, my DTD need this structure:
    <book>
    <body>
    <heading1>xxxxx</heading1>
    </body>
    </book>
    and I obtain it:
    <book>
    <heading1>xxxxx</heading1>
    </book>
I don't know if I can modify Rules, or EDD or Conversion table, to add the intermediate tag when use Structure Current Document
Second one is a blocking one. I generate the XML with the tags and fix any problem on it. It works great and I obtain a XML :
    <book><heading1 Id = "i1003066"><bookmark
        type = "38548: Heading 1: 1. This is the title"/>This is the title</heading1>
<paragraph>This is the text of the Title <reference Idref = "i1003066" type = "Page"/> and it bla bla bla</paragraph></book>
But when I try to re-open the XML with my structured application I obtain a log error:
"Error at line 17, char 31, Message: ID attribute 'i1003066' was referenced but never declared"
and a warning about cross-references missing (they working before save it as XML). File open and all is fine, except that references are missing and when I try to update the Reference dialog box to find other file is open with this message:
1 Unresolved Cross-References to File: Current
And ask me to find the "Current" file where point the reference. All the references in the document appears missing.
Must I have two set of files, one FM for generate the PDF, and the XML for generate the help with my XLS? It is not possible re-open the XML on Framemaker and don't lost the references?
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi Van,
    You wrote:
    >>  You need to DELETE "Xref"  . . . This states that the reference element is a Frame cross-reference element;  you should not include another name.
That may or may not be true. If the element names are different in the XML (DTD) than FrameMaker (EDD), this is the mechanism by which you translate names. It may be that in this case, the EDD element name is Xref, but the DTD element name is reference.
    You also wrote:
    >> Maybe this will help clear things up, but it may be unreasonable to expect that cross-references in Word will translate cleanly to structured FrameMaker.
In this case, I couldn't agree more. Esperanzas, I would recommend that you limit your faith in the conversion process, because there are many variables that will likely get mistranslated. Unless you are willling to do some programming with the FDK to clean up afterwards, I would expect that all cross-references should be recreated manually after import.

  • Phantom Cross-References

I have removed all cross-references from 17 documents collected into an InDesign Book. But when I try to export to PDF, I get an error message saying there are unresolved or out-of-date cross-references in 8 of the 17 documents.  There is nothing showing in the Cross-Reference section at the bottom of the Hyperlinks panel. I added "Cross-References" to the preflight profile, but everything preflights just fine. Is there something else I am missing?

No, the original cross-references came in some Word files that were submitted by authors from all over the world. When they showed up in the Cross-Reference panel as unresolved (or out of date, or whatever) I deleted them, as I didn't need or want them in my document. Now there are no cross-references showing in any of the panels of the 17 documents that are in my Book.  When I preflight the documents, using a profile that includes checking cross-references, everything preflights OK. But when I export to PDF, I get a warning that there are unresolved or out-of-date cross-references in 8 of the 17 documents. I can't figure out how to find the offending cross-references so I can fix (delete) them and stop getting that warning.

  • Cross-References Broken In RoboHelp 10 Output

We are using FrameMaker 11 to author our documentation. We have some cross-reference links that do not work when the FrameMaker book is imported into RoboHelp. Upon import, the href information is not included in the link in the HTML code. The text looks like a link, however. When the help is generated, the text is not a link.  The following is an example of a non-functioning link:
    see <a>Link</a>.</p>
Here is an example of a cross-reference that is functioning correctly:
    <a href="#XREF_90399_Heading_Text">Link</a>
There are no errors in FrameMaker. The cross-reference is updating correctly in FrameMaker. In addition, when a PDF is made form the same book, the cross-reference works in the PDF.
    Troubleshooting steps I have taken:
I have tried going to MIF and back for both the source and target documents.
I have recreated the cross-reference and marker.
I have tried linking to a heading cross-reference marker, as well as a manually create cross-reference marker.
    I have renamed the file.
    I have renamed the marker.
I have used different cross-reference formats.
I recreated the file by copying all the text to Notepad and pasting the text back into a fresh FrameMaker file.
None of the steps I have attempted have corrected the issue for the cross-reference I focused my troubleshooting on. I hope that someone can point me in the right direction to correct this issue.

I have been trying everything I can think of to move the files around to resolve the issue. 35 characters is very disappointing. Is this for the file and cross reference or the whole file path? I am not sure how you are going to be able to link from one Framemaker file to another, including a cross-reference name (especially when you can use heading for the cross-reference name) with a limitation like this.  We also have a large library with many directories. We utilize single sourcing, so some files are in completely other directories from the file that is cross-referencing to it. From what you are telling me, it sounds like we no longer have the ability to use cross-references from one file to another in our library structure. Are you saying that all cross references basically need to be in the same file to allow cross references to work properly in RoboHelp? We moved from a WebWorks solution and we never had any issues with our links.
What I don't understand is the marker is in the destination file in the converted RoboHelp files, but the link is completely missing the <a href="#XREF_name ofmarker"> code in the cross-reference link. When I go in and manually link the cross-reference in RoboHelp, it works. This seems like a bug. I think having a 35 character limit on a filepath, filename, and cross-reference name is not going to work for anyone that has any sort of complex directory structure with multiple authors, sharing content and since it isn't a limitation of HTML, I don't see why this functions this way. Manually linking isn’t a reasonable option for us. We have a publishing system that publishes all of our output. We have hundreds of files that are generated automatically.

  • Some FM cross-references do not convert to hyperlinks in RH

Some existing cross-references as well as new cross-references in a specific chapter within a book are not converted into hyperlinks in RH. The cross-references work fine in FM. Cross-references in other chapters in the book are converted correctly.  The problem started after  I killed Robohelp with the UI froze while performing an Update All.
After re-opening the project and updating the linked files in RH, a different character tag (blue italics) was automatically applied to the cross-references that were not converted to links. We tried deleting and recreating the cross-references, deleting and re-linking the affected chapter and importing the character and cross-reference formats from another book, but nothing has helped. Any ideas on what can we do to fix this problem?

    Hello,
No, we were never able to solve the issue. We decided to unlink the files
and use only Robohelp instead of FM-Robohelp.

  • How to find broken links or cross-references in a PDF file?

    Hi,
Recently I have been trying to figure out if there is a way to find out any broken link(s) in a PDF file. I'm aware that in FrameMaker we can search for Unresolved Cross-references and fix them, but is there such feature in Acrobat?
Any suggestions on this would be highly appreciated.
    Thanks.

There's nothing in Acrobat itself, but there are 3rd-party program plug-ins that do the job.  I use 'Autobookmark' (http://www.evermap.com/autobookmark.asp) which does a very good job of finding and marking broken links and allows keyboard-entry editing without having to re-browse the link if you already know the correct path.  It also facilitates a lot of other useful functions that Acrobat makes rather tedious (like changing the zoom setting on all links or bookmarks).

  • Cross Reference Range?

Need to get a cross-reference to range some pages, say page 16-19
At the moment I'm creating two text anchors, one for each page, 16 and 19, then inserting the page references as two entities.
    Is there a better way?

    Eugene Tyson wrote:
Ok - doing the cross-reference range works that way
The Paragraph Numbers are done with "<paraNum />"
And I use that for the cross-reference - but sometimes it pulls the entire paragraph in instead of the Para num?
Capturing a paragraph in a cross-reference when its format is not defined with the <fullPara/> or <paraText/> building blocks, AFAIK is not a known bug.
To be sure the cross-reference format's building blocks are correct, build the format's expression by clicking the plus sign button in the Cross-Reference Formats dialog box, rather than by typing it or copying it from other defined formats.
To cross-reference a range of pages, insert a page-number format cross-reference at the beginning and end of the range. When content is added to or removed from between the cross-reference source markers, page number references adjust if needed. Take care not to delete the cross-reference markers when deleting text; it's helpful to work with hidden characters displayed. Moving a page that contains a cross-reference marker, as you'd expect, changes the page number reference.
InDesign cross-references don't update automatically; you need to click the Update cross-reference button in the cross-references panel, or click the option in the cross-references panel flyout menu,  to fix the yellow warning symbols.

  • Cross Reference an Object??

How do I cross reference an object using Indesign CS4?
I've got a PDF that I've dropped into a frame, which I applied an Object Style.  Now I need to create a cross references in the document, that point to the PDF (a chart).  I've got to do this with several PDF's.
When I go to create a cross reference, I can only apply it a Paragraph Style or a Text Anchor, I don't get an Object Style to choose from.
I could put some text in behind the chart, and arrage the chart to the front, but i'd rather create a cross reference to the Object itself.

Cross-references only point to text - either a text anchor or a paragraph - not to objects.
If your placed PDF is in an anchored frame, you can point the cross-reference to the paragraph in which the frame is anchored.
If your placed PDF is not in an anchored frame, you can do what you suggest above, or you have these other options:
    * place the PDF into a text frame
    * create a text frame and group it with the PDF; point the cross-reference to the paragraph in the text frame, or insert a text anchor in the text and point the cross-reference to it.
    * you can paste the grouped PDF and text frame object into a text frame to make it an anchored frame.
The idea of a cross-reference is usually to point to a caption or heading. You can't point to the text in a placed PDF because it's really a graphic. You'll probably want a caption to identify the chart. The caption is the text you cross-reference to. The caption can be in the paragraph that holds the anchor, in a text frame grouped with the graphic, in a paragraph above or below the graphic, or in an anchored frame that's positioned near the graphic.
If your layout will not reflow, you probably don't need an anchored frame, but if the layout will reflow, you'll want to use the ability of an anchored to move with the text.
Read about cross-references and anchored frames in Help. If your caption will be numbered, such as "Figure 3," also read about numbered lists and numbering properties of paragraph styles.

  • ID CS4 - How to accurately identify existing cross references?

    Hi there,
I'd like to know how I can accurately identify an existing cross reference.
I've assumed responsibility for a large document with many figures and many more to be added. I've been adding cross references that use my "figure" paragraph style. All of my cross references point to locations within the same document.
I am encountering older formatted text that looks like it might be a cross reference but I can't be certain. I've been using the non-printing visible rectangle to clearly identify cross references I've added. The previous authors did this in one or two locations but apparently not consistently.
What does it mean when my cursor is placed in a bolded word and when I select the Type>Hyperlinks & Cross-References menu and none of the fly-out menu options are available? Does this mean I've placed my cursor within an existing cross-reference?
If so, is there any way to change the format of an existing cross-reference so that it uses the visible rectangle?
    Thanks,
    Peter H.

@Pete47 – you could try the "Wps HyperlinkInspector" by Werner Perplies:
    http://www.weepee.de/forum/indesign/viewtopic.php?f=50&t=59
Unfortuantely, it's all in German, but ask Werner for an English version…
I discovered some problems with its UI on Mac OSX, but if you are on Windows it should work fine.
The trial version is restricted to 25 hyperlinks…
Since "Wps HyperlinkInspector" is using "nodes" [+] you can expand, expect problems if you are testing with the current version of inDesign CC. There are some severe bugs with ScriptUI right now (e.g. you cannot expand "nodes").

  • Can I change a cross reference display without having to recreate it?

WHen cross references are to figures on the same page, I let the cross reference point to the paragraph number only ("see View 25"). When it is on another page, I use paragraph number and page ("See View 25 on page 34"). But when my text changes, sometimes text moves, sometimes images move and I need to change the cross reference. It is quite bothersome, I have to rmeove the old one and create a new one, hunting for the cross reference in a list of 150 or so.
Is there a simpler way? E.g. put the insertion point in the cross reference and than some easy way to select a different appearance?

Thanks for stepping in, Jan. I'm glad the smart page-reference building blocks in Cross-References Pro can actually do what I hoped it could, to solve this riddle for the original poster. I did a quick test, just to be sure it worked as I expected, and it does! It would be great for Adobe to license your technology and build this into InDesign, along with the rest of the extra-strength cross-reference abilities. (Disclaimer: I'm not connected to DTP Tools other than being a happy user.)
As to the unwanted space, perhaps a character style in nested and/or GREP style could apply some kind of width adjustment that would reduce the displacement to an absolute minimum.

The trick is that you include the words "on" and "on the" in the page wording definitions, but insert just emptu space for the This Page setting. There's a glitch that you end up with an extra space after the reference, but you can replace the normal space by a hair space (code ^| ) which makes it quite tolerable.
