Unresolved home sharing/internet disconnections

Hi,
This morning I'm trying to watch a movie via home sharing on my Apple tv and I keep losing connection on my Apple tv and on my Mac.  I lose not only home sharing but also internet just everything drops, although the wifi icon still indicates I'm connected to the network.  In Console I see hundreds (maybe thousands) of these:
8/26/14 12:05:07.336 PM iTunes[426]: Failed to create replacement string
I really think it's something related to iTunes.  My setup works 95% of the time, but I have these occasions where it just keeps dropping.  Seems like it's ok now that I restarted everything (meaning Apple tv, Mac, and network).  Any ideas?  Should I try to reset my iTunes or something and how would I do that?  Note that my routers are Airport Extremes so the entire house is running of Apple devices...
Thanks,
rc

trying to enable Home Share through the Advanced menu requires userid and pw (no problem) BUT - iTunes gives error message -3150 stating there's no internet connection.
I want to run movies and music from a local drive and don't need internet.
well, for the initial set up of home sharing, you need to have an internet connection. once set up, an internet connection is not necessary anymore.

  • Home Sharing - Internet Usage

Will Home Sharing have any effect on my internet usage (data) at all? If so, how much will it use?

    Short Answer: No
    Long Answer:
Home Sharing uses your WiFi around the house. So, for example, assuming your router is a wireless one and your Mac and iDevices use your private WiFi, then setting up home sharing means your iDevices, or your AppleTV, or any sound-system connected to your WiFi network via Apple Airport Express, will be able to share the Media library in iTunes on your Mac.
ie: Whilst at home, in the garden, assuming your wifi extends into your garden, you can listen to any of the music that's on your Mac, through your iPod Touch. Or even watch a movie that you downloaded to your Mac, on your TV (with Apple TV). All wirelessly.
To turn on Home Sharing, you'll need to enter you Apple ID and your password in iTunes on your Mac (Advanced>Turn on Home Sharing) and then do the same on any other device you which to have home sharing too.
    Hope that helps.

  • Apple TV 3 (5.1.1) Home Sharing to Mac 10.8.2 consistently disconnects WiFi

    Hi All,
I know there are several similar threads out there but none seem to have enough specifics about the situation for me to resolve it or trace the ultimate cause of the issue.  I am hoping if I lay out my setup someone
The main problem is:  If I watch a TV Show / Movie via HomeSharing I can only watch 1-2 minutes before it disconnects.  Wireless drops and then restablishes on the ATV.  No other devices have connectivity issues with WiFi connection including 2x MacBookPro's and the MacMini running HomeSharing, iPad 3g, iPodTouch 3g, iPhone 5.  I tried several different shows and some issue with all.  So, I tried watching the same show which caused the disconnect via iCloud...  It works! Not a single drop out when watching via Internet.  But what about my non Apple purchased content...  I need this to work.
    Apple TV is running 5.1.1
    Mac Mini is running 10.8.2
      iTunes is 11.0.1 (12)
Homesharing is turned on and enabled.
I have restored the image via Internet, I have reconfigured everything on the ATV.  I have ensured router and AP are running the latest firmware although I never had this issue on older builds of the ATV OS.  But I have updated several things in my setup recently (iTunes, Mountain Lion from Lion, ATV 5.1.1) and cannot pinpoint the cause.
    Here is my Setup.
Apple Tv ----> Wireless AP---->Linksys Router------> Cable Modem
                              ^
    Mac Mini ---------|
Both Devices connect at Wireless N.  AP shows good signal for both devices.
My Final Step is to try and restore via iTunes but as I read this doesn't work with iTunes 11 I may have already exhausted everything I can thing of.
    Any other suggestions greatfully received.

OK,  so I successfully updated the Apple TV via iTunes and USB cable.  Sadly it did not resolve the problem.
45s into the show, it stopped and returned the main menu with WiFi disconnected.  5-10 secs later and it's reconnected and home sharing is available again.
    I then found these threads:
    1) https://discussions.apple.com/message/19750601#19750601
    2) https://discussions.apple.com/message/20506178#20506178
I therefore tried the recommended "Downgrade" to 5.0.2 and can verify that it seems to be working!
10mins in and no disconnect.  I will update after further testing.
However If you find this thread, I would recommend downgrading to 5.0.2 from either 5.1 or 5.1.1
Let me know how this goes for you.

  • Home Sharing Disconnects - requires reboot

I have been using home sharing for quite a while, with a big jump in use several months ago when I added the new Apple TV to the mix. Starting last night Apple TV could not find my iTunes library. When I checked on MBP iTunes was open, but the home shring icon was not visible near the bottom right. I checked to ensure that home sharing was active, which it was. I restarted iTunes and the Apple TV, but it still did not work. I rebooted my MBP, restarted iTunes and it began to work again.
Today I tried to use the Apple TV, and again the same problem. I had to reboot my MBP to get home sharing to reconnect.
Nothing has changed over the last two days. I did add an Airport Express last week to extend my network. The AE is near the Apple TV.
    My setup is as follows:
Mid 2009 15" MBP running latest version of OSX 10.6.5, connected via wifi
    Airport Extreme router
    Airport Express to extend network
All one network with WPA2 encryption - I have also tried disconnecting and reconnecting the Apple TV
The other weird thing is my iPhone remote app cannot connect with my MBP no matter how many times I try. It was working before and it does connect to the Apple TV.
    Any ideas or suggestions???

I am having the same problem. I suspect that it's because the "network" is not maintaining a constant internet connection. Everytime it drops off, I have to turn off network sharing and then turn it back on in order for me to see the connection. I have U-Verse, and I have been talking to AT&T about this problem for quite some time... with no resolution. Now that I have installed homesharing, I can see this effect more than ever.
My take on this is that once you are maintaining a constant and solid internet connection, with no dropoffs, homesharing will work flawlessly. I am off to try to get this resolved via AT&T.

  • Why does my iMac lose internet connection when importing music via iTunes Home sharing?

Hi, I tried searching for a solution but could not find anything to solve my problem.
I recently purchased an iMac and am attempting to import my iTunes library from my old Windows 7 laptop using the Home sharing function. As far as I can tell, everything works fine - both computers are connected to my wireless network, I can see and connect to the library, I can begin importing my music but after 5 or so minutes my iMac will stop transferring music and I can no longer access any internet sites, even though i seem to be connected to the internet. Turning wifi on and off allows me to access the internet again. I have tried many solutions, but nope seem to have helped. Both computers have the latest version of iTunes. I have tried disabling the firewall on my router, resetting the router, resetting both computers, reopening iTunes.
Does anybody have any ideas as to what could solve the problem? Thank you

I've noticed that Lion automatically reconnects in about 5-10 seconds after being waken from sleep mode.
Make sure that you've set you Network connections up properly in System Preferences and then, after waking from sleep mode, wait to see if it automatically reconnects.
    In System Preferences:
    Network / Wi-Fi:
Make sure "Network Name" is specified.
    Advanced:
Make sure your "Preferred Networks" are specified. (The order is significant).
Also make sure that the "Remember networks this computer has joined" is checked.
Also, you may want to try playing with the "Energy Saver" Settings in System Preferences, perhaps disabling sleep mode but turning off the screen (although I don't prefer this method since it kind of defeats the whole purpose of having a sleep mode IMHO).

  • HT3819 Hi there. If I use "home sharing" on the same wifi network, does it use internet data, or only sharing over a home network?

Hi there. If I use itunes over home sharing in my house on 2 pc's, does it use data from my internet, or does it work over local home network?

You'd need both computers to be connecting to the same wifi network in order to Home Share.

  • Can i have two internet connections connected to two airport extremes separately without disturbing the home sharing option.

can i have two internet connections connected to two airport extremes separately without disturbing the home sharing option. i want to have both the airport extremes to use a single imac for streaming music or video to my apple tv's at different places where one apple tv is in the range of one airport extreme.it's not a problem if both airport extremes have different wifi id's with separate internet. The imac which i use for streaming the music and videos is only in the range of only one airport extreme.is it possible if i can stream music or videos to my apple tv which is not in the range of same airport extreme which i use for imac but in the range of other airport extreme.
Finally what i need is i want to use two internet networks as my highest possible internet bandwidth is about 1mbps.and i know that i cant mix both the networks and make it as 2mbps.

Yes, that is possible. Please check out the following Apple Support article for details on how.

  • Internet connection drops when I use Home Sharing with my iPod Touch

    Hi,
I have two PCs (Windows 7 and Windows Vista) both with iTunes 10.2.1 and an iPod Touch with iOS 4.3.1.
When I use iTunes' Home Sharing with my iPod Touch, that is, I stream music, podcasts, etc from either one of my PC computers to my iPod Touch, a few minutes later both laptops, as well as my iPod Touch, lose Internet connectivity. While home sharing continues, Internet connection is lost. I have to unplug my modem and wireless router to get back my Internet connection. The problem, however, recurs again and again.
    Any recommendations? Thanks in advance.
    Dave

I am having the same problem. My MacBook, iPad, iPhone, and even the PC all lose internet connectivity;but home sharing still continues to function properly on ATV2.
I'm not too savvy on routers and modems, but could the problem be my router's capacity?

  • Not able to use Apple TV Home Sharing when internet down

I am encountering an odd problem.
I have been using Apple TV ever since the 1st Gen and have been using it to stream content from my iMac using Home Sharing.
It's all been working without incident until the past 2 weeks as my internet connection has been spotty and dropping out for 30 mins - 2 hours at a time.
When the internet is down I am able to browse my itumes library, look to see what is there, no issues.
But when I try to play the content I get the spinning wheel indicating it's loading content but nothing loads.
I've tried resetting the Apply TV.  Restarting iTunes, etc, etc - nothing works.
It only starts to work again once the internet connection comes back - then I am able to play content.
This is odd as it's all offline content (subscribe to many podcasts that download automatically and want to play them via Apple TV from my iMac iTunes).
Has anyone else had similar issues and have a workaround?  Or is this a new "bug" that has to be corrected by Apple?
    Many thanks

    Hello,
i have the same problem when I go on holiday.
i Take my airport express to create a local wifi without interne So I can use home sharing from my laptop to apple tv for children animation movies or watch our own series.
    1) if you wait several minuts the spinning wheel will disappear and the content will start.
    2) IF you want it quicker when you are offline>  launch it from your mac then airplay it (via the iTunes airplay icon near the fast forward button of the video) then it starts immediately.
This is an issue that only affects Apple TV not being connected to internet when trying to retrieve content from Apple TV via home sharing.
Let me know if both workarounds works for you the same way it works for me.

  • I rented a movie on my apple computer but it won't play on my apple tv.  i have never had a problem until a month ago.  Home sharing is on, and internet is fine.

I rented a movie on my apple computer but it wont play on my apple tv.  never had problems till 1 month ago.  internet fine, home sharing on.

The movie must fully download to iTunes.
If you have an AppleTV1, have you downloaded a 1080p movie rental as it can't handle that, in which case alter your Preferences for downloads to 720p, contact iTunes Store support and see if they can re-enable the download or refund so you can rent again at 720p.
If you have black model ATV2 or ATV3, then I assume you are looking under the Computers icon where a new Rentals row appears in order to play rentals downloaded to iTunes.

  • We have a movie downloaded on a laptop connected to the internet pluged into our router in the basement and an apple tv upstairs trying to play the movie through home sharing but it wont play. can anyone tell me whats wrong?

we have a movie downloaded on a laptop connected to the internet pluged into our router in the basement and an apple tv upstairs trying to play the movie through home sharing but it wont play. can anyone tell me whats wrong? it comes to the last loading page where it shows the desscription of the movie befor it acually plays.

It can come about without any change done by the user, and it's not just from other networks. The placement of the router can also affect performance. Also make sure router is up to date.
Apart from that would be the reboots.

  • Internet Sharing & Home Sharing

I have a MacBook Pro sharing hotel Ethernet over wifi.  Meaning the machine is serving as a wifi router because the wifi here is completely choked by all the people using it....but Ethernet is blazing fast..so I'm making my own wifi.
One interesting thing, Apple provides Internet Sharing which is awesome.....but it's NOT serving DNS.  My iPhone, iPad, Apple TV all connect but can't see the internet without me specifying a DNS server on each client.  That really stinks, but isn't the reason for my post.
The post is mainly because iTunes Home Sharing (Airplay) doesn't work over Internet Sharing.  WHY?
If my MBPro and Apple TV are connected to hotel wifi airplay won't work, but if I connect an Ethernet cable from the MBPro to the AppleTV, BAM home sharing works.
So, in theory shouldn't Internet sharing with the firewall turned off work with AirPlay?  Why is it blocked?  How do I unblock it?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.
