Unresolved kernal trap - can anyone decipher?
Following is the info after a forced restart. I don't know how to interpret this but am looking for advice from anyone that can. I suspect bad RAM although it checks out ok. I get numerous cursor hangs and occassional white on black text overlayed on screen (kernal panics?) many times while the machine is basically idle as ws the case in the example below. Thanks for any help that can be provided.

my comments to Apple:
Had a VNC connection going to a local iMac running 10.4.8 (17" G4 USB 2.0)
Had actually stepped away for supper and the PB was not really doing anything other than idling. When I came back to it, found the restart message.
I also have random hangs and occassional white on black screen overwrites with errors requiring restart.
Suspect bad RAM?
One week now with the Samsung RAM - no cursor freezes or kernal panics, and like others have indicated, the unit is running somewhat cooler as noted by temperature monitor.

Unresolved Kernel Trap - can't restart after reinstalling OS
hi, i just zeroed out one partition on my G5 after backing up the files to another partition. i wanted to reinstall a clean OS. i wasn't able to install from the CD in the G5 - kept getting a weird broken apple logo and the computer fan would start to rev. - so i reinstalled from the original discs but had to do so from my iMac G5 with the G5 connected as a FW drive. here the install went fine and i was even able to boot from the newly installed OS as well as the backuped up system from my iMac G5.
however the problem starts when i disconnect the G5 and reboot it. the OS starts to load, i see the apple logo but then a dark grey screen descends and i am told i must restart the computer. the text on the screen says "Unresolved Kernal Trap (cpu 0)" followed by more info that i don't understand.
i can't seem to boot. i checked the prermissions by hooking back up in FW mode to the iMac and apparently there were some issues which disc utility resolved. still i can't restart the G5.
the hardware configuration i have is identical to what i had when the unit arrived a year ago.
can anyone please offer me a solution?
thxHello I am having a very similar problem. I am running a G5 with two drives.I haven't used the drive the computer came with as I transferred the drive from an older g5 into the #2 slot and have been working from that.(OSX Tiger upgraded from Panther)
I purchased some new software so decided to do a clean install on the newer drive (Purchased with OSX Tiger installed.)
I cannot find my original install CD's which came with the machine(I know I'm an idiot) so I tried the install from my Tiger CD.Every time I tried to restart with the CD I got the unresolved Kernel disaster described above.Luckily I managed to boot up the computer on the old drive by resetting the PRAM as I started up.
I called the local Apple shop and he advised creating a disc image of the CD and from that navigating to System/installation/packages/OSinstall.mpkg and installing from there. I had a little trouble figuring out how to create a disc image from the CD so navigated to the above installer within the CD itself, opened the installer which then proceeded to successfully install the OS on the erased drive."I'm saved" I yell! BUT when I try to boot up the newly installed OS I get the same unresolved kernel thingo.
But wait there's more, now I can't boot up at all,not even using the PRAM trick.
Remember I don't have the Discs that came with the machine to boot up with.
Am I totally screwed?
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Cheers

My eMac had been running well and doing as it should. Within the past few weeks it has started to freeze up with the screen shadowed and a message appearing in the center saying "Your computer needs to be restarted. Hold down the power button for a few seconds or press restart."
When I restart it asks if I want to send a report, which I always do. The report begins with the words "Unresolved kernal trap" followed by code. Once in a while it alters and begins with the word "Panic" followed by code.
It seems to be doing it more and more, now two or three times a day. It sometimes happens when I am in the middle of something and it gets very irritating.
Any suggestions as to what's causing it would be appreciated. In addition to checking your eMac serial number against those in eMac Repair Extension Program for Video and Power Issues, see if the eMac's logs give any clues whether the problem might be with some third-party background process: Refer to What’s a kernel panic? for info on where to find the logs. Since eMacs running 10.5 are fairly rare, if you need help interpreting the logs, you can post excerpts from the logs in the Leopard forums to reach a large knowledgeable audience.

I was Hacked. I also found a suspect file. Can anyone decipher it?
I know I was hacked by my ex-partner (i was pretty much told so and that I was easy to track down (i.e. my computer) through it's IP address using an old email).
I also found a unknown file at the top level of my hard drive. I know everything that is at this directory level.
I opened the file using word and it contained the following:
DMFRAM -Error( 0): Can't open file: dt05tmp.01 !
(repeated 5 times)
Can anyone decipher this?
I am now really paranoid. I thought I was safe with Apple's built-in Firewall set to maximum security so learning this has caused me a lot of concern.
I have since purchased and installed NetBarrier and disabled the root user. Any other tips to secure my computer would be greatly appreciated.
15" Powerbook 1 GHz Mac OS X (10.4.7)
I also would like to check my logs to see if I can spot any unusual activity but i can only see the last three days in the ipfw.log? Can anyone tell me where to find older and/or the logs i should be looking at?
Thanks in advanceHaving the firewall turned on is only useful against mitigating attacks that target services you don't want/expect to run. It does nothing against protecting against services that you enable. For example, if you're running a web server you presumably want to allow people to hit it, therefore the firewall needs to allow port 80 traffic in. It's not validating that traffic to see whether it's a real request, or whether the web server software you're running contains a vulnerability (like the all-too-common sql-injection common to many discussion boards).
Even more importantly the firewall doesn't do anything to protect against weak passwords. The chances are your friend knows your name (he is your friend after all), so he has half the keys he needs to get into your machine if you have SSH/Remote Login enabled. Now all he has to do is try different password combinations until one works... pet's name, child's name, zip code, etc. Once he finds a match there's no firewall in the world that's going to stop him poking around your machine, and this is the likeliest cause of any break-ins.
What can you do about it? not much other than to use really good passwords and to disable any accounts that you don't absolutely need.
As for the logs, they're rotated and compressed weekly where the last four weeks' logs are /var/log/ipfw.0.gz, /var/log/ipw.1.gz, etc.
You can use Console.app to view the logs, or decompress them manually at the command line. However, it's unlikely to yield any results if he came in through a door that was unlocked.
What might be more useful is the system.log or secure.log which will log failed login attempts. I'm betting somewhere there (maybe in one of the .gzipped versions) there's a number of password failures (unless your password is really easy to remember. -
Can anyone decipher the source of kernal panics I'm having from this?
I've had several kernal panics lately. I got on the phone with tech support who merely directed me to reset the PRAM and sent me the email link:
Link: http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n106805
Mac OS X: "Broken folder" icon, prohibitory sign, or kernel panic when computer starts
AFTER I specifically stated my kernal panics DID NOT happen on start up. They usually happen when the computer is not being actively used. I walked away and came back to find the latest panic on the screen after hearing the fan going at a furious rate.
Please recommend a course of action! Hardware info is at end of kernal log. Thank you!

Unresolved Kernal Trap OSX 10.4.11...HELP!
The Mac Pro I've been using in the studio keeps having a kernal panic and shutting down to the black screen where I must hold down the power button to restart. I saved the error message upon rebooting and was hoping someone on here could shed some light on what's going on. I'm running OSX 10.4.11 on a fully upgraded Mac Pro with 16 GB of ram.
Here is the message as follows:

Any help with this would be very much appreciated. I really need to get my work done.Understanding crash logs isn’t easy and it’s hard (sometimes impossible) to decipher the cause of the problem. Take a look at Apple’s Crash Reporter document at http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn2004/tn2123.html Also look at Tutorial: An introduction to reading Mac OS X crash reports
http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20060309075929717
Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. What external devices do you have connected? When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices except your monitor, keyboard and mouse. Do you experience the same problems?
To eliminate RAM being the problem, Look at this link: Testing RAM @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.
Do you have an Apple Hardware Test disc (the AHT is on the Install/Restore DVD that came with your Mac)? Running the Apple Hardware Test in Loop Mode is an excellent troubleshooting step for finding intermittent hardware problems. It is especially useful when troubleshooting intermittent kernel panics. If Loop Mode is supported by the version of the Apple Hardware Test you are using, you run the Extended Test in Loop Mode by pressing Control-L before starting the test. Looping On should appear in the right window. Then click the Extended Test button. The test will run continuously until a problem is found. If a problem is found, the test will cease to loop, indicating the problem it found. If the test fails, be sure to write down the exact message associated with the failure. In some cases, RAM problems did not show up until nearly 40 loops, so give it a good run.
May be a solution on one of these links.

Unresolved Kernal Trap-Hardware or Software issue?!?!
I could really use some advice here. My PowerBook G4 is driving me crazy. For the past 8 months, it has these "fits" where I either get the Grey Screen of Death or the kernel panic messages all down the left side of the screen.
I've reloaded my OS three times and the issue seems to go away for a while, and then one day it goes off again.
Noticeable situations:
Computer is cold (it's in my office in the basement) after sitting all day... it's been asleep... I open the screen and boom... crash.
Airport is trying to reconnect with my local network after the computer has been sleeping for a while. (Where I've left the screen up but used the "sleep" command.)
Attempts to resolve:
After trying everything under the sun I know of, I thought there might be a RAM issue after reading some posts here in the discussion forum. I ran Apple Hardware Tester to find there was an issue with one of my RAM chips which upon further research suggested that it might not be seated all the way (hence the intermittent crash). So I opened up my PowerBook, switched the RAM chips around and that seemed to solve the issue (for a while). Oh, and the RAM passed all AHT tests afterward.
Question:
Is it possible that the heating/cooling cycle over the years has caused the RAM sockets to become "unstable"? Things seem to work pretty reliably when the computer is warmed up.
Here is the report from my last crash:

Things to try;
1) disconnect all third part hardware and try the sleep function
2) reset the power manager
3) use terminal and type in reset-vram
reset-all
4) what I suspect, where did you buy the ram? remove any third party ram and just use what came with the powerbook
5) the hardware test is not going to tell you if the ram is not compatible, it can make mistakes and say its ok when if fact it is not. Although more or less if it does say its a problem then it is a problem but just don't rely on its final word.

Can anyone decipher my kernal panic report?
I'm having them 2 to 3 times per day. In my limited research, I know it can be related to memory and I am in the process of pulling out pair by pair to isolate which one may be causing it, but no luck as of yet. Or is it related to something in the operating system. Below is the kernal panic report.

com.logmein.driver.LogMeInSoundDriver 1.0.0
This looks a lot like like an Error Correction Code (ECC) memory error. The Mac Pro store additional check bits with each word in mmeory, and corrects single-bit errors on the fly. Uncorrectable errors cause a kernel panic.
The status is also updated in About this Mac > ( More Info ) > Memory...
The status will change to something other than "OK" and possibly to a count. -
Kernel Panics often - can anyone decipher error message?
Hi, I am running a MacBook Pro 17" mid 2009 with Yosemite (connected to an Cinema Display)
2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
8gb 1333 MHz DDR3
SSD Drive
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256mb
I work often in Adobe software, and I typically keep iTunes running playing music connected via Airplay to external speakers.
Lately I have been getting the black screen and the resulting error report. I am not tech-savvy enough to be able to decipher this report.
Does anyone know what this report is telling me? Looks like something with iTunes possiibly?
Any advice? I really don't even know where to begin looking for help - and I live hours away from the closest Apple store. There is a BestBuy with an Apple section and rep, but I don't think they offer comparable help.
Thanks so much!

Thunderbolt Bus:Ok, thanks again! I am confused why my Mac tells me I can use 1333 Mhz DDR3 memory, when you are telling me I need to use 1067 MHx SDRAM?
Is there something I am missing or doing wrong here? Could the RAM I have in there now have gone "bad" somehow?
Sorry for confusion - I do appreciate your help - I'm just trying to understand and make sure this is the issue before I spend more money.
I also realized this morning that I had less than 10% free space on my hard drive, so I fixed that ... I know sometimes that causes issues.
Thanks again! -
Help!! can anyone decipher this error report?
I would be really grateful if anyone could decipher this error report. My system has become really unstable and unusable if I can get beyond the grey screen. During use I get a grey curtain come down and a message telling me to hold the power switch to shutdown.

Many thanks guys.Firstly, well done for getting the crash log.
The bit :

+panic(cpu 3 caller 0x001A8656)...+
I'd say is the immediate cause (kernel panic) of the shutdown.
Apart from that, is your memory ok?
There was an identical (is that you\?) post a while back on:
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=484526
This article gives some mmore info as to possible resolution:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1388?viewlocale=en_US
Antoher poster had problems with 1st gen Mac Pros:

Finally, and this is probably your best course of action: *phone apple (if you cannot get into an Apple store).* It sounds serious enough to me.
Sorry I could not help any further. Good luck -
Panic Log: can anyone decipher?
I've had 4 kernel panics so far on my 4 day old MBP, each time occurring while watching video of some sort (DVD and iTunes). I'm attributing it to heat, and I'll be taking it back to the Apple Store this weekend. One of the point of interest might be the fact that I've been using the iSkin over the keyboard since day one. According to their website, heat shouldn't be a problem, but they did not specifically mention testing on the MBP. At any rate, I've got this panic log, and I was wondering if any one could decipher it and lend some more insight into what's going on. Here it is:

Darwin Kernel Version 8.9.4: Thu May 17 18:04:27 PDT 2007; root:xnu-792.20.12~1/RELEASE_I386In my crash reporter logs are two logs. One for "mdimportserver", and the other for "Frontrow". The funny thing is that for the time recorded for both of these crashes, I don't recall having a crash. So I don't know how useful it is. The crash event that happened this evening is recorded in the first log below at "Wed Jun 13 19:09:38 2007 crashdump[143]: crashdump invoked as panicdump"
At any rate, I don't want to waste anyone's time. I'm going to take this back to Apple in a couple of days. I'm sure they can figure it out. I was just curious about what this was all about, so if anyone is into challenges like this, feel free to chime in.
Here is a log from Console, under "/var/log > crashreporter.log":

Logic Keeps Crashing...Can anyone decipher this jibberish?
Hello,
I have a PowerBook G4, version 10.4.6, 1.67 GHzm, and 2 GB of SDRAM.
I am running Logic 7.1.1. My problems began after installing Symphonic Ochestra. This is the error I get when Logic continually crashes.... If anyone can help, I'd really appreciate it..

tail -n 20 /Library/Logs/Console/administrator/console.log.0
which I did and this is the response I got...

Any ideas anyone? ANy help gratefully appreciated.
Many thanks,
KirstinYeah, there are problems with your mail server database. Are you running email on that server? If so, there are configuration problems and possible mail database corruption, which you can fix by using the relevant troubleshooting techniques detailed in the manual:
http://images.apple.com/server/pdfs/MailServicev10.4.pdf
Of course, if you're not using the box as a mail server, then it would be easiest to stop it from Server Admin.
