UNRESPONSIVE NVidia 6800 card and Powermac G5 Dual 2.5 (2004)

I just purchased a NVidia GeForce 6800 Ultra card for my 2.5 dual G5 (which is a model from 2004). I need the card b/c I've been doing a lot of work in Motion. I bought the card on EBAY and it came in a beautiful Apple box -- barely used and verified to be working.
I installed it and it didn't work, even though my G5 meets all the specs. The card is properly installed (its fan is whirring up a storm), but my 2 Samsung monitors don't activate. (Everything of course works fine with my standard-issue Radeon 9600). I'm on 10.410
A few notes:
-An AppleCare specialist claimed that my G5 is too old for this card -- even though the card says it works with even First Gen G5's. (I believe mine is 2nd Gen)
-When I try starting up with the Nvidia, I hear a high-pitch sound -- almost like speaker feedback. I saw this on someone else's post with another graphic card issue
-The Graphic Card Installer CD's would not install drivers on my system. Said something about my harrdrive not accepting these drivers
-Another post mentioned how a Logitech wireless keyboard driver can mess up graphic extensions -- which makes no sense to me (I am using a Logitech wireless keyboard.
Any thoughts out there. MUCH MUCH appreciated.

I actually did what Roland suggested and got mine to work. The only problem has been when I run World of Warcraft I now get a Kernel Panic. I have been using the computer without updating anything in osx, currently running osx 10.4.0
I am going to do the cumulative update to see if it behaves better. Is there anyway I can find out if the card is running in AGP x8? This is the card info I get on the system profiler:
Chipset Model: GeForce 6800 GT
Type: Display
Bus: AGP
Slot: SLOT-1
VRAM (Total): 256 MB
Vendor: nVIDIA (0x10de)
Device ID: 0x0045
Revision ID: 0x00a1
ROM Revision: 2121m
This card is different. It says its a 6800GT DDL, but its not the original Åpple made one, its one that says GeForece XFS on the fan...
What do you guys think?

    Hi there,
Sorry took a while to get back to you guys. I have been having some issues with Premiere and Aftereffects CC.
    I recently bought an Apple Pro CTO - Intel Xeon E5 3.7 GHZ Quad-Core with 10MB of L3 Cache, 32GB (4x 8gb) 1866MHZ DDR3 ECC DDR3 RAM, 1TB PCIE-BASED Flash storage, DUAL AMD FIREPRO D500 GPUS with 3GB of GDDR5 VRAM, DUAL Gigabit NIC, 802.11AC, bluetooth, 6x thunderbolt2 ports, MAC OS X.

Hi All, if anyone can help me fix this error I will be most aprreciative.
I get this error when I open After Effects.
Ray-tracing on the GPU requires an approved NVIDIA graphics card and CUDA 5.0 or later. For now, ray tracing will use the CPU.
After installing CUDA 5.0 or later, restart your computer.

  • Core Image Cards for Powermac G4 Dual MDD FW800

Hello there Gentlemen, currently running my Dual G4 with a ATI Pro Radeon 9000. This card does NOT Support Core Image. i need however ADC for
my flat panel from Apple 20". So what are my choices to get a card
that does core image and will drive my Cinema display?
    cheers
    sir double null

    Hey null,
looks like we have close to the same machine. I have the 9000 card in my machine also and recently purchased the ATI 9800 which is supposed to be a great card. Unfortunately, it isn't working for me yet. I don't know if the problem is just my computer or something else. I have an open thread just two below yours:

Here's the link for graphics cards that support core image..

I don't see the 9800 listed in this list? But I could have sworn it was on the list a couple months ago, at least the 9800 was in order to run Motion. It's so completely frustrating.
Post back if you get a video card working and what it is.

  • NVidia Graphics Card and HP Pavilion Elite m9040n

I am looking to replace the Graphics card from the NVidia GeForce 8400 GS to something as current as possible.  Was looking at the NVidia GTX 480 but I don't think it is compatible with the model.
Can anyone confirm and/or make a suggestion?

How to replace a power supply.
How to replace a video card.
So look at the GTS 260.  It's an excellent card.  Look for a modular 600 watt power supply.
The ATI Radeon 5830 is also an excellent card. However, I have seen where some older PCs work not work with the newer ATI cards.
These high powered video cards will generate some heat so be prepared to deal with that issue.
What is hotter, a 100 watt light bulb or a 300 watt light bulb?

  • ISite external and PowerMac G5 dual 2.7 GHz - no signal

OK, so I fire up Delicious Library to enter some DVDs and when I click on the little camera icon, I get a black window with "no signal". Similarly if I fire up iChat, and click on the camera icon, there is only a black window - no image. In neither of these cases does the iSite's little green light come on.
Twisting the bezzel to open/close the iSite lens cover (which I only found out about today when searching for a solution to this problem - neat little shutter) has no effect.
If I unplug the iSite and plug it back in, the little green light comes on for about 3 seconds, then there is a click sound and then the light turns turns off.
The iSight does apear in the System Profiler, and if I have iChat set to open upon the iSight being plugged in, iChat does launch when I plug in the iSight.
I do not use the iSight very often, but I recall in the past there being some troubles with it being fully recognized, but previously I have been able to solve it by plugging/unplugging, loggin in/out, and similar sorts of tacticts. I have enven tried restarting the system, and that does not seem to have helped.
Anyone have any ideas? The "iSight: How to Troubleshoot" document at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93240 seems to indicate that it might be a hardware problem with the camera?
      Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hello Johann Beda,
Although you solved your own problem, I'm a bit surprised that you didn't come across the advice to never, not if you value your external HD data, never run or use your iSight at the same time while an external HD is in use. There are numerous stories & discussions of problems with iSight and external FW devices not playing well together and of lost data. I think you were probably lucky that you only experienced the cam not working.
Anytime you want to use the iSight, unplug the external HD. Otherwise your running a risk of lost data. And if your using the external HD for Delicious (scanning bar codes) you might want to consider adding a 2ns internalSATA HD to your G5. It takes less than 10 min and there are simple directions on the Apple support site.
I did, and have not had any problems. And I now use the external FW HD for backups every week.
Finally, as Ralph mentioned, there are somereports of problems w/Delicious but compared to the FW-iSight-Ext.HD issue, this conflict seems to be pretty rare.
    Respectfully,

  • Non NVidia graphics card issues with Adobe and Mountain Lion

It took me a while to figure it out, but now I am certain. If using a Mac with a non nvidia graphics card there will be issues in Mountain Lion while using Adobe products. I tested this with Illustrator CS6 for over a year on 5 different Mac computers.
    Here is what happens
As soon as I open Illustrator on a Mac without a NVidia graphics card and I attend to apply an shadow effect, Illustrator crashes. If I do this procedure on a Mac with a NVidia inside, all works well.
I tested this on the following Macs
MacBook Pro (Early 2009) with NVidia 9600M GT - it works
MacBook Pro (Early 2011) with Radeon 6750M - doesn't work
Mac Pro (Early 2009) with Radeo HD 5770 - doesn't work
The same Mac Pro (Early 2009) with NVidia GT120 - it works
MacBook Air (Mid 2012) with Intel HD 4000 - doesn't work
iMac (Late 2012) with NVidia 680MX - it works
Since I owned all these Macs, I could test it several times with different kind of software updates. 10.8, 10.8.1, 10.8.2 and 10.8.3 did deliver the same result. Everytime the same result.
Already got in touch with Adobe
With Illustrator CS5 it worked like a charme, so I assumed it could be an Adobe issue. But Adobe support told me, it's Apple's fault since 10.8 uses different processes for the graphics performance.
What can be done, to resolve this issue? I cannot buy only Macs with NVidia inside, since the small portable front of Macs is only coming with Intel graphics cards. And is there anybody out there, having this issue? I cannot be the only one, using shadows in Illustrator.

A typical response.  IMO it's most likely a combination of Adobe's reluctance to fix the issue combined with Apple's desire for advancement and change.  I've personally experienced several things that've become broken owing to Apple changing fundamental aspects of the OS, and the developers of the third-party software in question have either never fixed their software, or are taking their sweet time.  WireTap Studio and Snapz Pro from Ambrosia are a case in point, though they eventually fixed Snapz Pro.  Eventually…
Frankly, good luck getting either side to do anything about this.  Your best bet is probably getting in touch with AppleCare and seeing if you can get this escalated to Engineering, but I wouldn't hold your breath for a fix from either party.  Or perhaps one of the Apple mailing lists will prove useful.

  • HP 6300 using the built in video card and a quad card to support 6 monitors.

I am try to configure a HP 6300 Micro Tower to support 6 monitors. I have installed a NVIDIA NVS510 card and installed it but not the built in video card is disabled how do I enable both cards to work at the same time?

    Hi:
Below is the link to the service manual for the Pro 6300.
    http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c03612810/c03612810.pdf
Please take a look at chapter 3, page 23.
There is a bios setting to enable/disable the onboard video.
Integrated Video (enable/disable). Use this option to disable the integrated video controller
when another video controller is present in the system. Default is enabled.
My assumption is that when you add a PCIe x16 video card, the onboard video is automatically disabled in the BIOS.
See if you can change the O/B video setting back to Enabled to see if that will allow both video devices to work at the same time.
If the setting is grayed out or it enables the onboard video but disables the PCIe x16 card, then I guess it can't be done.

  • Whats a working Geforce 6800 card for K8N Neo2?

I bought an XFX 6800 card and experienced freezes when running high end games, even a game from a couple years ago.  The vendor said that they are getting 1/3 of the xfx cards returned as defective and are phasing them out.  I still want to get a Geforce 6800 card, but can't find any reviews of specific brands.  Any suggestions? (by the way, i have a 400W PSU so thats not it  )

I have a BFG 6800 GT OC and I get freezes unless I clock back the card to 350 MHz (OCs come 370) and cannot use any driver higher than 67.03.  The NF3 chipset and 6800 just don't get along for some people, maybe new NF3 drivers will fix it..if they every come out.

Some power supplies are over rated and although claim to be 400W or 500W that are actually much lower
Huh?  400W is 400W.  As you said in your previous post, the thing to watch is how many amps are given to the 12V line.

  • Video card upgrade for powermac g5 dual core

will the NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT Graphics Upgrade Kit for Mac Pro work with a PowerMac G5 Dual Core?

Unfortunately, no. Although both cards are PCI-Express the difference in the card's ROM (the G5 card needs an Open Firmware compatible ROM, whereas the Mac Pro needs an EFI compatible ROM) make them incompatible.
Assuming you currently have the nVidia GeForce 6600, you could upgrade to either the nVidia 7800GT (was originally a build-to-order option) or ATi's X1900GT. Both are available from OWC and are very similar in speed to each other. Both are considerably faster than the 6600.

The 15" Retina's will have better performance than any 13" Retina. Not only do the 15" machines have dedicated GPU's, but they also have quad-core processors, whereas the 13" Retina's only have dual-core processors.

  • PowerMac G5 Dual 2.5 - Only Boots with Side Cover and Fan Guard OFF!!

I have the strangest problem with my PowerMac G5 Dual 2.5.  This has been my Pro Tools rig forEVER.
At some point early last year, my Mac wouldn't boot.  It would not see the hard drive, and would show that dreaded alternating icon in the middle of the screen indicating as much.  I tried resetting, tried power off/on, tried resetting PRAM.  Nothing.  I took the cover off, and fan guard off to get at the hard drive.  Verified the data and power cable were seated in hard drive.  Cover still off, I booted up the system.  Voila!!!  Booted right up like nothing was ever wrong.  I put the cover back on, and went about my business, passing it off as a one-off power glitch (the power in my house ***** rocks).  Next time I rebooted the Mac, the exact same thing happened.
I can repeat this at will.  If I leave the cover on, the system will not ever, ever boot.  The minute I take the cover and fan guard off, causing the fans to spin at max speed when turned on, the system boots without issue.  So, I reset PRAM and PMU.  I even tried replacing that green/white cylindrical battery on the motherboard.  Reseated power/data cable on hard drive.  ****, I even tried a different hard drive and memory (explained below).  No change.
Since then, I have relegated this system to the emergency backup system, and procured Dual 2.7 G5 PowerMac.  I transferred the pro tools cards, hard drive (without formatting it) and memory (8 GB) to this new 2.7, and have not had a single, solitary issue with it.  So, I know it's not the hard drive, memory, OS install, or Pro Tools cards.
What in the name of the Apple Gods could be causing this issue?  Any ideas at all?

    Hi Chris,
Good info & work so far, but indeed strange, only thing I can think of is something to do with that little switch for the fan cover... near the bottom as I recall, but it may be some kind of short in it's circuit.

  • Powermac G5 Dual 2.3 How to add bluetooth and airport extreme ?

    Hi,
I have the above computer. I would like to know if it is possible to fit an airport extreme and bluetooth module into the machine retrospectively ?
it is a cost option which was not supplied by my company ?
    Any ideas or suggestions ?

    All,
I am updating the question, so that it can be on record.
I manage to get hold of one from ebay. To check that it is the correct unit you need to look at the bottom of the base unit to identify the model. The model no. would give EMC part no. 2023. The EMC part no would have to match with the read me guide.
There are no installation instruction in the guide so i had to work things out (and you need nimble fingers !).
The unit has a bluetooth module and the airport extreme attached via two black screws. The bluetooth module fits on the airport extreme card, which in turn plugs on to the motherboard.
You need to remove the fan.
The bluetooth module is held to the card via two black screws, undo the screws and take the bluetooth away from extreme card.
On the bluetooth module there is two connectors connect the wire from the motherboard on to the module, then carefully plug the bluetooth module back on to the card and then screw the black screws on to the card.
If you miss a screw then do not worry as it works okay !
( I had a plumber come around reqgrding some work, so I lost concentration, when pluging in the module)
Place the module on to the board.
    Place the fan back.
Restart the machine. The aiport extreme/bluetooth module would be picked up automatically.
It took me a couple of hours to work everthing out. The hardest part is to get hold of the module.
any questions email me on [email protected] Note that i am giving the 'advice' on best efforts basis without any liability.
