Unresponsive Script: chrome://messenger/content/mailWindow.js:180. Thunderbird running slowly.

When accessing my inbox, Thunderbird slows down so much it is almost unuseable. I keep getting a pop up window telling me that the script: chrome://messenger/content/mailWindow.js:180 is taking a long time to complete, and would I like to stop it. If I do stop it, Thunderbird sometime speeds up for a minute or so and then the problem starts again.

  • How can I get rid of this? script:chrome://messenger/content/mailWindows.js:173

    Hello,
I have combed the internet for an answer but cannot find anything conclusive.
Each time I open Thunderbird from scratch I get this message:
    script:chrome://messenger/content/mailWindows.js:173
This has been going on for several days now.
Once you answer the pop up question, one way or the other, the program carries on downloading messages.
Any advice would be very welcome.
I am on windows 8 home edition.
    Cheers
    Peter

The error has nothing to do with the browser called chrome. It has to do with javascript in Thunderbird acting on the thunderbird chrome (that is the user interface your see.)
If you have McAfee the first port of call is their chat support and ask them to check your settings. There are just to many permutations of "what works" as they have now released about 4 versions that mess up Thunderbird and all have a different fix.

  • Script: chrome://messenger/content/mailWindow.js:179

I have reviewed other knowledge base answers for this error. But this seems to be only happening on a email account which has over 2000 emails, if email account is smaller, then no issue. Is anyone else getting this error message and have a large volume of messages in your email account. I have already disabled email checking within mcafee.

  • Gettiong chrome://messenger/content/mailWindow.js:179 error but after while works fine. Two accounts and appears worse with one account

when starting up Thunderbird, it's very slow. Running version 24.6.0 on Windows 8.1. Computer is a ASUS laptop. Have two email accounts. One account works fine but the other one is very slow at beginning. Clicking or deleting emails I get no response until after about 30 seconds. At times I also receive the following error message "chrome://messenger/content/mailWindow.js:179'. Clicking on stop script doesn't help. After about 4 minutes, get normal response times. This is after I have clicked or deleted emails aout five times.

About 5 minutes is how long it takes anti virus programs to scan the Thunderbird profile folder. Perhaps you need to exclude the profile folders from "on access" scanning and leave it to full scans to look at that part of the disk.

If I click stop script firefox will open, how do I resovle this issue
I have tried reinstalling but still get the same problem.

This issue is caused by an AVG add-on (tavgp) that isn't working properly.

  • Open FF3.6.12, get "Unresponsive Script" chrome://bp/content/bp.js.857

This unresponsive script message appears when I click on FF icon to open FF. I have tried both answers ('Continue' OR 'Stop Script') as well as simply closing the error box without selecting either option. After responding or closing the error box, I am able to open FF browser. However this happens each time I try to open FF or change sites. I use Moz's NoScript 2.0.51. I tried updating the plugin and Mozilla said 'Plugin Finding Service Error We've encountered an error. Please try your request again later. Grateful for any help...

This issue can be caused by an extension (bp?) that isn't working properly.

  • Why do I keep getting this: unresponsive Script: chrome://browser/content/tabbrowser.xml:585

seems to come up when using facebook.

If you're having problems using Facebook with Firefox see the following:

  • My BetterPrivacy addon now Freezes firefox, causing a "Script: chrome//bp/content/bp.js:847" unresponsive notification. I'm still running Ff 3.6, and want to keep BetterPrivacy, but I have to disable it now. It worked just fine until recently.

I have to click on "Stop unresponsive script" to get Firefox to load, and then have to disable BetterPrivacy in order to use Ff normally. I haven't changed Ff or BetterPrivacy lately, to the best of my knowledge, but I can't use the BP add-on any longer.
Just in case, I also deleted my Chrome browser, which I had as a stand-by, but it didn't help. I still get "A script on this page is unresponsive: Script: chrome//bp/content/bp.js:847". Any ideas?
I'm not certain which version of BP I had when this problem started, but today I tried adding the latest version, 1.49, but still had same trouble.
Your "educated guess" is correct - Ff 3.616 and Vista.

I turned off the accelrator months ago. That was the first thing I did. It helped some. The problem is getting progressively worse, so it seems like every upgrade in the past 3-4 months is causing the problem.

Sounds like an issue with the Cookie Monster extension.
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the ''Safe mode'' start window.
You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (on Mac: "Firefox > Quit")

  • I keep on getting this unresponsive script error "Script: chrome://greasemonkey/content/prefmanager.js:55" . I have tried to update everything and it still showing that error and then crashing. What can I do?

I am running Facebook and leaving it on..when I come back to it or sometimes when i am using it i get this Unresponsive Script Error - Script: chrome://greasemonkey/content/prefmanager.js:55. If i click continue or stop it will go away but many times the page is frozen so i have to restart Firefox. I am not using Chrome so i am surprised about that part of the error. I have read the other posting and have tried to change the time under config......can't remember the rest and it has not worked. Please advise what else i can do.

In Firefox the use of the term chrome refers to the user interface and other elements that are not part of the web pages.
    See https://developer.mozilla.org/en/Chrome
Your problems seems to be caused by the GreaseMonkey extension.<br />

  • I try to restore my bookmarks from a json file but i get "warning: unresponsive script - Script: chrome://browser/content/browser.js:3580" message - please help

I have no idea why my bookmarks wont restore. I am confident that I even tried restoring them at the time of creation of the json file to make sure that they worked, and after i was confident i left them for a month or two then tried to restore them, but it does not work at all. I get Script: chrome://browser/content/browser.js:3580 (unresponsive script error msgs) and whether i click continue or stop script the bookmarks do not change. Please help - there is a lot of bookmarks there i was relying on.

Not sure if this is appropriate, but I have a similar problem. Yesterday I got an update from MS to my new Win 7 machine. Now all my bookmarks are gone except the three I have in the toolbar.
I have tried following the instructions here but it's not working. First: I can find the bookmark backup files, but don't have any html files there. They are listed as "bookmark-dates-number-a series of letters and numbers, then ==.json."
I'm confused as to what to do next.

Firefox has crashed numerous times on me tonight, and I keep getting an unresponsive script error (Script: chrome://devany/content/main.js:254) regardless of what website I'm on. NoScript will not block this script, and it's popping up with an increasing and alarming frequency. It's completely crippled my Firefox, and getting the a large enough window between unresponsive script warnings to get the Troubleshooting Information from Firefox took me a good 20 minutes. It's a very persistent script. I've already re-installed Firefox and restarted my computer, and scanned for viruses/malware. I'm on a Mac, if it makes a difference.

yay, I had this same issue, and I too browsed deviantArt and also have got Deviantanywhere add-on installed. : D

I'm going to disable DeviantAnywhere after I post this and hopefully this will be fixed for me too!
I actually hadn't kept my firefox up to date. but.. *shh...*
I updated it and after I did, it told me that there was a script running that was not responding. : )

  • Unresponsive script message, "Script: chrome://somoto/content/tb.js:2977", continue or stop script

On opening firefox (which now seems to take longer than previously, an error dialogue opens headed, "Warning unresponsive script" followed by the message,
"A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.
    Script: chrome://somoto/content/tb.js:2977
I am then invited to check the tick box if I don't want to be asked again (of which no notice is taken)
I am also invited to "Continue" or "stop the script".
This occurs every time I open FireFox, and on opening, for example, a calendar where I must select a date in order to proceed with my Medicare provider claim.
In summary, two problems: slow to start up; and the persistent error message.
    Thank you for your help!

That type of message is usually due to a incompatible/malforming add-on. Try the procedure in the [[troubleshooting extensions and themes]]. First look for any that contain somoto in their name or initials.
