Unsaved Changes in File:[File name] Save before closing?

Hello!
FM 9 on Win 7 Pro.
I am a long-time FM user.
I am trying to open files that I could successfully open before I left work yesterday. I can open FM, and open FM books. When I try to open an FM in a book, or an FM file not in a book, I get this message:
"Unsaved Changes in File:[File name] Save before closing? Yes No Cancel.
It doesn't matter which one I pick (Yes, No, Cancel), FM next shows this message:
FrameMaker 9 Application has stopped working. Windows can check online for a solution to the problem.
Check online for a solution and close the program
Close the program.
View problem details
It doesn't matter what file I try to open (recently worked on files, and files I haven't touched for some time). Same messages, no matter what.
I have tried to update the book (the update seems to happen), saving the changes, and then try to open. Same error messages. I had hoped that updating the book would clear any possible cross-reference problems.
I have tried several re-boots, nothing works.
Help!
Thanks in advance for any and all help!
Terri

Since its happening with every file, my suspicion is that your application data is corrupted. Try this:
close down framemaker.
delete the following directory: C:\Users\[user]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\FrameMaker\
reopen framemaker and see if the problem is reproducible.

  • How to save unsaved changes to pdf file?

    Hi,
    I have a plugin for signature creation and verification created using acrobat sdk 9 and testing in acrobat x. When user initiates a signature creation process, in SigGetSigProperties() callback, i need to save any unsaved changes in the pdf file before i proceed with the signature creation process. To achieve this i added this code to SigGetSigProperties() callback:
    // Save unsaved changes to file.
    AVDoc avDoc = AVAppGetActiveDoc();
    if( avDoc )
    PDDoc pdDoc = AVDocGetPDDoc(avDoc);
    // save unsaved changes
    PDDocSave(pdDoc, PDSaveIncremental, NULL, NULL, NULL/*AVAppGetDocProgressMonitor(NULL)*/, NULL);
    But this code generates this error:
    Creation of this signature could not be completed.
    Unknown error
    supported information: CDSHandler-657
    and
    Creation of this signature could not be completed.
    Error at File: ..\sources\DSHandler.cpp , Line: __LINE__
    What am i doing wrong here? is this the right approach and is there a better way to achieve this?
    thanks and regards,

    Hi,
    Actually, i need to save the pdf just before signing starts. saving at idle handler will not fullfil our requirements. how can i achieve this?
    And keeping in mind the above requirement, when i think about adding a button or menu item, as u suggested, the only thing that comes in my mind is that, i disable the signature creation button and add my own button for signature. When its presses i save the pdf and internally call the acrobat's default signature button to start the signing process. But firstly i dont know if its possible. and secondly, there still remains the scenario where the user clicks an empty field to start the signing process.
    what should i do?

  • Can I make it so Pages "asks me" if I want to save before closing?

    Can I set Pages to ask me if I want to "save" a document before closing it?  AppleWorks always used to ask me first before closing a document I was working on.  Is there a way to get Pages to do this, too?  Thanks.

    No, Auto Save and Versions is a feature of Lion. Pages merely utilizes it. I don't care how many national primetime TV specials you've produced. I never called you stupid, but you are ignorant of Lion and OS X - OK?
    If all you can do is gripe about it then don't post. I'm trying to help you understand but you seem just to want to argue about the past being better than the present. If you cannot use Snow Leopard then learn to deal with what you have.
    I'll quit responding since you are becoming rude and argumentative. Sometimes you don't always "get your way."

    This is very annoying and we need this stopped as we have made no changes to any of the adobe files. Please advise how to do this.

    I first tried the version without the deflated stream (so everything uncompressed) against the online repair tool to check/analyse it @ https://www.pdf-tools.com/osa/repair.aspx
    And it says no error found, but the reader still want to save it when closing so i still had no clue at this point.
    Fortunately, i finally found what was wrong with my generated PDF.
    In my xref table, each object reference was not end by a full EOL, i only did put a newline char.
    Now i have "carriage return" "newline" which is the full EOL and the reader is happy and close the file silently.
    As suspected i did not follow correctly the specs on xref table
    Now i'll go and figure what i did wrong with the deflate filter
    Thanks for your help.

    Truly dumb question. How do I get PS to actually complete a command, eg straighten an horizon, and finalise the change. Is there a "apply change" or similiar command that I simply cannot see.

    PSE did what you told it to do. Choose the Straighten and crop edges or fill edges options when you use the straighten tool if you want it to do more than just straighten the contents of the image. Many people prefer the plain straighten because they'd rather crop themselves than let PSE do it.

  • Suddenly cannot change any file (icon) names

    Until today this had never happened. I create a new folder, click to select and get a text box, overwrite 'untitled folder' with a new name. Now no keys have any effect after I get the text box. I can't overwrite or delete the name or any character of the name. And it doesn't matter if it is a folder or a file, whether it is on the desktop, or what folder it is in. I tried using Get Info and unlocked everything, and made sure permissions were all Read & Write, even though I assume that is not necessary. Nothing helps. Any suggestions?

    Hi Jack,
    Instead of keeping files or folders in the Dock, use your Safari Bookmarks instead. This way you can go to Safari/ *Export Bookmarks* to save the in the event of a system failure. You can burn this to a CD, back up hard drive, a .mac account using an iDisk... just to name a few. That way if you restart, you don't have to worry about the files/folders in the Dock. You will have to restart your Mac after software updates regardless.
    Also, there is a difference between completely shutting down your Mac and Restarting. This from the Apple Help Viewer/Mac OS X/Restart:
    Restarting your computer
    You don't have to shut your computer down to restart.
    To restart your computer, choose Apple menu > Restart.
    To restart from a login window, click the Restart button.
    If you don't see a Restart button in the login window, log in and choose Restart from the Apple menu.
    If necessary, you can restart manually. Hold down the power button on your computer until it shuts off. After a moment, press the power button again to start your computer.
    Some computers may also have a special "restart" button on the case. Check the documentation for your computer to find out.
    IMPORTANT: If you restart manually, unsaved changes in open documents may be lost. Be sure to save your work often.
    I just added a document to my Dock, went to the Apple Menu and clicked Restart and when the Desktop came back up, the file was still in the Dock.
    The restore disk that came with your Mac is probably machine specific. And no, there isn't anywhere on the Apple site that you can download a copy of Tiger for free.
    Renaming Mac OS X folders is not a great idea. Here's why... if you can't find a certain Mac application and you've renamed it, you wouldn't even be able to find it with Spotlight. Never change the names of the system applications/utilities.
    "I tried a number of random folders and files in different parts of my hard drive, *including the desktop, just to see if it was a universal problem,* or just something about the newly created folder."
    This is most likely the reason you are having problems naming files and folders. If you have altered any files in the System or System Folder, then you really need your restore disk because other than purchasing a Tiger disk, or upgrading to Leopard, if your Mac meets the minimum requirements, maybe the only way to get your Mac running as it should.
    Tiger install DVDs are in short supply. Tiger is no longer available at the Apple Store but is still available for $129 by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753).Go here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2571
    "Or can I burn a CD with DiskUtility copied to it from my machine.." You can run the Disk Utility that resides on the drive located in your Applications/Utilities folder to Repair Disk Permissions or Verify if there are errors on the disk, BUT it cannot Repair the disk. That is why you need your restore disk.

  • Change file format in save as dialog

    when i 'save as' in photoshop cs4 to change a psd to jpeg, the extension does not change.
    example: original file- 123.psd, save-as 123.jpeg. instead of adding .jpeg, cs4 adds the word 'copy' in the file name and keeps .psd. if i try to open the file again, ps says it is not a supported format and does this until i manually change the extension to jpg.
    any ideas?

  • Need help adding a default file name in a file chooser of save dialog type

    I need to create a file chooser with save dialog type, how can I add a highlighted default file name into the File Name textfield? As in Microsoft Word, when you want to save a document, a default file name Doc1.doc will appear in the File name text field of the file chooser even when you change to other directories.

    For JRE 1.4.0 you can use this fix:
    public class FileChooserFix implements PropertyChangeListener {
      private String fileName;
       * @see PropertyChangeListener
      public void propertyChange(PropertyChangeEvent ev) {
        JFileChooser chooser = (JFileChooser)ev.getSource();
        if (JFileChooser.FILES_ONLY == chooser.getFileSelectionMode()) {
          if (JFileChooser.SELECTED_FILE_CHANGED_PROPERTY.equals(ev.getPropertyName())) {
            File selectedFile = (File)ev.getNewValue();
            if (selectedFile != null) {
              // remember fileName of selected file
              fileName = selectedFile.getName();
          if (fileName != null &&
              JFileChooser.DIRECTORY_CHANGED_PROPERTY.equals(ev.getPropertyName())) {
            // reset selected file
            File directory = (File)ev.getNewValue();
            chooser.setSelectedFile(new File(directory, fileName));
       * Convenience method to create a fixed file chooser.
       * @return      fixed file chooser
      public static JFileChooser create() {
        JFileChooser chooser = new JFileChooser();
        chooser.addPropertyChangeListener(new FileChooserFix());

  • FDK Problem: "Unsaved changes in file" dialog with MIFs

    Hi there
    I have a problem saving MIF files using our FrameMaker API client.
    After we have written out all our content, we're getting prompted to save unsaved changes in the .MIF file.
    We're not sure whether to click yes here or not.
    If we click yes, we then get a save dialog which prompts for a filename,
    but has the default file extension set to .FM.
    When you click "save", another message box appears telling me that I'm trying to save a
    .MIF file in the .FM format and that is not allowed, and asks if I want to save it
    as .MIF.
    Although this is an a mere annoyance for me, it's probably very confusing for
    customers who use our software, and I'm not sure whats causing it.
    I've tried to address it by modifying the default save parameters within the FAPI
    using this:
    F_PropValsT saveParams = F_ApiGetSaveDefaultParams();
    i = F_ApiGetPropIndex(&saveParams, FS_ModDateChanged);
    saveParams.val[i].propVal.u.ival = FV_DoOK;
    Needless to say, it didn't work. I'm wondering is thee another approach I should
    be using?
    Thanks
    Eric

    Hi Eric,
    I'm not clear if your software is saving the file automatically, or whether the user needs to do it after your process runs. And, I'm not really clear on what exactly you want to happen after your code runs.
    I do think that any open MIF file (even if in binary format, after being opened in FM) will cause that prompt when you attempt to close it manually, even if you have made no changes since the last save. My thought is that FM simply looks at the file extension and generates that behavior accordingly.
    A few options you have (may be more, once I understand the situation better):
    - Let the code close the file itself once it is done, using F_ApiClose(docId, FF_CLOSE_MODIFIED). This, of course, if the interactive user doesn't need to see it.
    - Use F_ApiNotification() and F_ApiNotify to hijack the save request and save the file as MIF automatically, which should allow you to avoid the second prompt.
    - Use notifications to hijack the document closure process itself, simply closing the doc upon request whether it has changes or not. Or, maybe you could add your own prompts. This would take consideration of whether you actually want to allow an interactive user to make changes after the code runs.
    Just some ideas there. If you provide more info on what you want to happen after your code runs (presumably this is the translation thing), I might be able to help more.

  • Is it possible to change the predetermined file name?

    Hello everybody:
    When I'm using the classical " app.execMenuItem("SaveAs"); " saving button, I always get the original file name in the dialog saving box (in order to save it locally). Is it possible to change this predetermined file name? where can I change it?
    Thanks a lot,
    Javier

    Adobe does not support this option. You have to live with it. Any way users get choice to change location and file name in the SaveAs window.

  • Changing Clip and File Names While Maintaining Link to P2

    I know that if I open P2 files in the Log and Transfer window I can (re)name clips before transferring them to QuickTimes and still maintain a link to the original P2 files in case something goes offline. Two questions:
    1. If I transfer without changing the name, then change the name of the clip and its related QT from within a bin will it still maintain its link to the original P2 files?
    2. If so, will it maintain a link to copies of the same P2 files on another drive (I'm transferring and organizing at home using a backup of the P2's)? Would links be maintained if I did the name change in the Log and Transfer window?
    OK, that was three questions. No one expects the Spanish Inquisition.
    Martin

    Well...the best way to figure this out is to test. I didn't know, so I did a test. Imported a clip called 0003JK.mov. Changed it at MY CAR (because it was a shot of my car)...used FCP to change the name of the file on my drive to match the clip. Then I deleted it. Then I used the BATCH CAPTURE function...and YES, it imported that clip fine.
    SO...for #2...test it and see. But, if you mean that you are importing clips on one machine, NOT changing the names...and then on your machine importing and changing the names....will it relink to the files imported on the OTHER machine? I doubt it...but I can't be sure. So test it. The only way to know is to test it.
    But if you change the name in the Log and Transfer window, or later, yes, they relink.

    When exporting from Photos, the panel for naming the file no longer shows up. Why and how do I change so I can name the file what I want?

    You don't need to maintain all versions of the upgrade chain, but many of us do in case we need to work on a legacy file. If you want to rmove a version, though, ti should be done BEFORE installing the later one. Just reinstall CS5 and things should get back to normal.

  • FM8: File Always Opens Unsaved Changes

    Hi,
    I have a file in Framemaker 8 that always opens with "unsaved changes."  I save the file, the asterisk clears, but the next time I open the file the asterisk is there.
    I thought this might be a "missing font" issue and, as a test, turned off Remember missing fonts. This setting does not seem to impact this behavior.
    Any help much appreciated.
    Mary

    I found a very nice explanation by Fred Ridder on Framers:
    I think a better understanding of how cross-references are handled will help you under why I say this.
    Whenever you open a file that contains one or more cross-references, FrameMaker refreshes each of those references. If the reference is to another location within the same file, the refresh is straightforward unless the cross-reference truly is unresolved due to a missing or hidden cross-reference marker. If the reference points to a location that is in another file that is already open, the process is similarly straightforward.
    But if the reference points to a location that is in a file that is *not* already open, FrameMaker has to silently (without showing anything on your screen) peek inside the target file to retrieve the latest information for the refernce. If that file has any sort of problem that would throw a warning message during a non-silent open (e.g. an unavailable fonts message), FrameMaker is unable to peek inside it and therefore cannot find the marker it's looking for. It reports this failure to find the marker as an unresolved cross-reference. If you start by manually opening the file with the missing fonts issue, so that you can manually dismiss the warning message, then you will not get an unresolved cross-reference warnign when you open the original file because FrameMaker can now find the target marker when it updates the cross-references.
    BTW, the updating of the cross-references is the reason why FrameMaker will warn you about unsaved changes when you attempt to close a file that you *know* you didn't make any edits in. Even if the cross-references did not actually change as a result of the update operation, the fact that they were refreshed counts as a change that FrameMaker thinks you ought to save.

    This  makes sense and matches with what you said so succinctly Jeff. Thanks for the help.

  • When I change meta data, File name changes too

    In iTunes 11.1.3 I have been modifying the Music file ID3 tags (or what ever they're called).  I've found, though, that when I change the song name in the "Get Info" dialog box, it also changes the ACTUAL file name of the song.
    For example.
    I download a a CD and the CD information is downloaded.  Then when I drag the newly created mp3 into iTunes and select "Get Info" to modify all of the information.
    Once i hit Okay or Next.  I watch the File name in Finder change as well.
    How do I keep it from doing this?

  • File name getting changed while exporting file

    I am exporting file of name something like
    mithun.ruikar.111212.csv
    I am using
    response.setHeader("Content-disposition", "attachment; filename=mithun.ruikar.111212.csv");
    to export my file.
    Now what is happening is on JSP i get download popup and even i can save the file
    and it shows proper contents inside.
    Only problem is (default) name of file is
    now changed to
    mithun[1].ruikar.111212.csv.
    If i am trying
    ruikar.111212.csv only
    then i get ruikar[1].111212.csv
    and for 111212.csv i get 111212.csv, which is right.
    So only when i use more than one . in file name the first . is preceded by [1].
    How to solve this?

    I dont have anything duplicate.
    as i said my file name is of format
    mithun.ruikar.121344.csv
    here last part is time stamp.
    and if use file name like 12344.csv or mithun.csv it works fine.
    My problem is having filename with more than one dot
    and there are no duplicates.
    I would like to know some kind of escaping for these dots.
