Unsecured connection WRT54G

I just installed a wrt54g router and everything works except for one crucial problem. When I check my connection it says its an UNSECURED connection.
Im running Windows XP on a Lenovo T60 laptop and Windows 2000 pro on my pc.
I tried re-running the installation cd with no luck

PPPoE requires a login user name and password.  Only one device on your system should do the login.
You said your computer used to do the login, so apparently it is set to do PPPoE logins.
Now you set up the router to do your PPPoE login.
So when you connect the computer to the router, it is trying to use a PPPoE login to connect to the router.  That won't work.  The router is set up to use its DHCP server to automatically assign your computer an address.
Set your computer to "obtain an IP address automatically" and "obtain a DNS address automatically".   Now connect to the router.  It should work.

  • Connecting WRT54G and Motorolla SBV5220

    Dear all,
I have tremendous problems having WRT54G workign after cable Motorolla router. If I connect motorolla directly via cable to the PC, there is internet. if I connect WRT54G to Motorolla unit and former to the computer, there is none, neither wired or wireless. I explored variety of tricks but nothing helped. Suspisioucly in statu IP never become a number for WRT54G. I restarted and reset WRT54G numerous times, I also changed it's IP to 192.168.2.1 in case it might a conflict with Motorolla. Nothing works
    thanks
    My WRT54G settings are default, 8.2.03 build 008, <script type="text/javascript">// Capture(month.num11) // </script> Nov. 8, 2007 , automatic DHCP

Well....you have two choices. I would recommend that you unplug your motorola modem from the electrical outlet for 20 minutes. After 20 minutes plug it back in, now try.
If that doesn't work, then clone your pc's mac address. search forum for instructions.

  • Secure-Unsecure Connection

After setting up my router with my desktop, I noticed on the laptop that there are 2 connection options available under my router name. One says Secured Network and the other says Unsecured Netork.
How do I delete or remove the Unsecured Network so that it isn't accessed?
Is this something I should be concerned with?  I don't want unauthorized people using ny network.
    -Jeff

Following Windows Help, I accessed my Network Connections but the router/wireless network (icon) is not there so I could not continue to delete the unsecured connection
What exactly is SSID? I have already renamed my router and changed the factory password and the guest password. My router is set for 1 guest, the upstairs laptop (I thought that's what "guest" referred to)
Is the "guest" the Unsecure Connection?
    Thanks

  • How To Connect WRT54GS Wirelessly

I have a WRT54GS router that I want to setup wirelessly with my Windows XP desktop that only has a wireless adapter installed. There is no ethernet port on the pc. I have looked at the Stickys and read the FAQ but still haven't found an answer that clearly states how to setup the router without using an ethernet cable connected to the pc. I  want to have the ability to access the web based setup page as well so that I can secure my settings. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Generally, it's better to configure the router through a wired connection to be sure you configure your router and not someone else's... Thus if you have any wired ethernet device it's better to use that instead of trying a wireless only setup.
You can set it up only through wireless, however, you should make sure you are connected to your router in the beginning. Easiest test would be to unplug your router from power and check for available wireless networks. If there is still another "linksys" network to be seen, you must be extra careful.
Anyway, then plug your router back into power. Make your computer search for networks and connect to the unsecured "linksys" network. It's best to put the computer close to the router for this to make sure you connect to your router.
Then open the web interface at http://192.168.1.1/ default password should be "admin", no username required.
To be sure it's your router, go to the Status page, check it's really a WRT54GS and check the MAC address you see there. It should be the same as the one printed underneath the WRT (maybe one or two off in the last digit). If it's a completely different MAC address, check the LAN and wireless subtabs and the MAC addresses shown there. If all MAC addresses are completely different, unplug the router from power and see if your computer is still connected to the web interface or not.
Anyway, once you have established it's really the web interface of your router, check the firmware version and on the router and the one available online. It's best to upgrade the firmware before you do the configuration. If you have the latest firmware you have to configure the router. I would recommend the following steps:
    1. Go to the Wireless page. Change the SSID to something unique. Save settings.
    2. You'll loose the connection. Make your computer search for networks again. You should now see the new unique SSID. Connect to that network and open the web interface again.
    3. Next set up wireless security. Enable WPA2 Personal with AES encryption and set a strong passphrase. Save settings. You'll loose the connection again.
    4. Now you have to reconnect. Depending on your computer and the software use to configure the wireless you may have to remove the unique SSID first from the list of preferred network before you can reconnect. The computer usually remembers the SSIDs joined before and won't connect if the security settings don't match the one used before. But you have to find that out.
    5. As you are still using XP the computer may not support WPA2 or AES encryption (which is the best and strongest you can use today). Thus, if you are absolutely not able to reconnect the computer you will have to reset the router to factory defaults pressing the reset button for 30 seconds and start over. Choose WPA Personal with TKIP and a strong passphrase then. That should work. I would not recommend to use WEP which is easily cracked.
    6. Once you have managed to set up your desktop to connect to your secured wireless network you should make one more change: change the default password "admin" on the "Administration" setup page.
    7. Remember to clean up the list of preferred wireless networks, in particular, don't forget to remove the "linksys" network from that list. Otherwise your computer may automatically connect to a "linksys" network if one comes available in the proximity.
    That should be it.

  • I Have Spent (No Kidding) About 20 Hours Trying to Connect WRT54GS

I am trying to connect my new wireless laptop (HP Pavilion dv6985se) to your WRT54GS router.  I have DSL internet with Verizon over a dedicated line.  My modem is a Westell model E90-810015-06. Your instructions show the router being plugged into a PC tower, which I do not own.  No matter how many, many, many times I go through the steps for installing the router, I always end up with the router attached to my laptop- not wireless.  There is no way for me to connect the modem to the router using two cables as your instructions show. My modem only has the ethernet outlet and a usb outlet (which I don't have a cable for because I didn't need it).  I should not have to buy a flash drive to make this work. At least that's what HP says. When I connect the modem to the router,  I get an error message on my monitor saying I am no longer connected to the internet and I should check my connections. The ethernet light never comes on on the router. I never get past step 4/4 (waiting for router).  At this point, the process freezes, and I have to use Task Manager to end the program.  At the end of it all my computer 1) can't find the router 2) Is disconnected from the internet 3) Can't locate a wireless connection.  I am so ready to throw this in the trash and never buy Linksys again.  I have been to a bazillion websites, and many, many people are having similar problems.

First, do not use the setup CD (Easylink Advisor) as it does not work.
Go here if you have a cable connection.
Go here if you have DSL connection.
Go here for your wireless connection.

  • Loosing modem connection WRT54GS v6

I have recently purchased the WRT54GS ver6 and continuously loose the connection from the modem to the router.  I have one wired, one wireless and both will work fine for 1-2 hrs, then lose the connection from the modem.  I run the Easy Link advisor, it finds the router, the two pc's, but no modem.  I power down then power up the modem and click the "fix connection", it goes through the two pages then connection established.... every time.  It finds the router, the two pc's but always has to have the modem restarted.
    Frustrated,
    mark

Thanks for the response, totally appreciate the help.  The version I have, the version they try to have me download now is 1.50.9.  Where do I get the version 1.01.0?  When was it released?  Version 1.50.9 was released just this October.
    thanks again

  • Connecting WRT54G to Enterprise Network

I want to connect my WRT54G to an Enterprise network and allow wireless users to access the internet, but not my intranet. Are there setting configurations in the 54g that will allow this?
The WRT54G does not broadcast and is encrypted.
The wireless users are able to connect, but they are able to access all enterprise resources. What I would like, would be for the router to hand out it's own IP addresses separate from my internal DHCP IP's given out by my server.

No. You have to configure that on your routers/switches/firewall. Everything you plug into your existing LAN has access unless you restrict the access with the current LAN infrastructure, e.g. with managed switches or on your router.
Even if you could tweak the WRT to filter traffic into your existing LAN (with 3rd party firmware) it would be a high security risk. The LAN side of those cheap routers has only weak security mechanism and the risk of someone hacking into the router must be considered.

All possible if your LAN infrastructure supports it. But for that you have to post what it looks like and what devices you have.
Sidenote: Disabling the broadcast won't really secure the network. Encryption only if it is WPA2 or WPA.

Ok i just got the at&t internet package in the mail and i already set it up. I got a linksys wrt54g router and it just doesnt want to work. I get to the part where it says connecting to the internet but it just never connects. I went to dslreports.com and it says i actually have pacicific bell - SBC. I used to have sbc adn even then i could never intstall the router. Someone please help me. oh yeah its a motorola modem.

    Try following settings .....
Please access the setup page of the router by launching an Internet

  • Connecting WRT54G to NETGEAR WNR3500

i wished to make my NETGEAR WNR3500 as a repeater to a motel-based router of LINKSYS WRT54G.  I am based here at Roundup, Montana to do some business and i found out that the wireless signal is so low that i have intermittent connection.  Since i have a BUFFALO WHR54GS router at home and it is now busted, i bought a netgear router/repeater to be used at my home.
Since I'm still here at the motel, I plan to use the router as a repeater for a while to boost the motel's signal.  The owner of the motel give me a go signal to use my router as a repeater but when I'm going to ask the router's specs, he didn't let me modify anything on it or look up the specs.
anyway, since there is a linksys range expander product that is capable of (duh) expanding the wireless range of routers, i didn't bought one because it will be only used for my stay here in the roundup.
What I need help is what to setup with the netgear router as it has the repeater capability to enhance the range of the linksys router.
-I got the MAC address of the linksys router by doing a IP-MAC translation software from the internet via ipconfig /all.
-It has a WEP key which I have already from the owner of the motel.
-The channel is what i don't know (any software or command from windows to know the channel of the linksys router without looking it up at setup?).
Hope someone will help me on this problem. I posted this at the NETGEAR FORUMS also.

Get wireless client utility from boingo, and it should show you all details about wireless signls available.

  • Secured and Unsecured connection question

I was dealing with a customer when she asked me a question about her wrt54g wireless router. She said that when she goes into view available wireless networks it shows one network, Secured. And the same network name, unsecured. They are both her name (she has an obscure name so i doubt anyone in the area named their network the same).
My question is, how do you disable the unsecured network? I would assume it's a profile in the router (windows only has her secured network listed in the profiles).

The router can only generate one wireless network, so the "extra network" is not coming from the router.
On some systems, the wireless adapter software will show two entries for your own wireless network if "SSID Broadcast" is set to "disabled".  One entry is the wireless network without its SSID, and it will be shown correctly as either being encrypted or unencrypted.  The second entry is the same wireless network with its SSID, and it too will be shown correctly as either being encrypted or unencrypted.  This is not exactly what you described, but may be the cause for the confusion.
Another possibility is that the unencrypted network is somehow poping up from her list of "preferred networks", and that it got into that list before she encrypted the network.  In this case, either "Refresh" the list of available networks, or delete the listing for the unencrypted network from the list of "preferred networks".
Another possibility is this:  Someone else in her household has their wireless card set to "Ad-hoc" mode, and it is generating the unencrypted network.  (Yes, this does happen! )
Another possibility is this:  Someone in the neighborhood has copied her SSID.  In this case, change the SSID, disable SSID broadcast, and encrypt the network with a strong password.
If it is none of the above, then download and install the latest driver for the wireless card.

  • Connecting WRT54G with Westell Versa Link router via wireless

    Hi,
I have a Westell wireless router from verizon which seats next to my phone in one part of the house.
I got very week signal from that router on the other part of the house so I decided to use a WRT54G version 2.2 router I had to improve the signal.
I can set up the WRT54G fine if i use a cable but I don't like that solution. It would be almost impossible for me to run the cable from one part of the house to the other.
So that let me with only one option. make the routers commuunicate with each other via wireless. I tried for several hours to make this work and I couldn't.
I would greatly appreciate it if someone could tell me if this is possible and if so what are the steps involved to make this work.
    Thanks in advance
    Geno

    1. The results are far better running a cable than setting up a wireless bridge or repeater. Thus, unless it is really impossible to run a wire I would always prefer the wired option.
    2. A WRT does not connect wireless to anything else with Linksys firmware. It is a wireless router. They only provide an access point to which clients connect but the access point never connects to anything else.
    3. The only alternative would be to flash a 3rd party firmware. Those usually add repeater and/or bridging capabilities. See the wikipedia article on "WRT54G" for a start. Remember, a bad flash may brick the router.

  • TC as bridge want to connect WRT54G as WAP

Ok, I'm trying to figure this out.  The Westell DSL modem I have acts as a router, so my Time Capulse is set up as a bridge.  I need a another router so I can run an ethernet cable from it to connect to a device several rooms away and act as another router, so I've been trying to set up my old Linksys WRT54G as wireless access point.
    So recap:
Westell modem to Time Capsule (set in Bridge Mode).  I need the WRT54G to connect to Time Capsule so it can act as a WAP.
    Is this possible?
    Any help is appreciated!

Just clarify how the WRT54G is going to connect to the TC.. I am taking it you are using long ethernet cable??
If so the setup is extremely easy.. you do not want the WRT as another router.. it is WAP and switch only..
    Use wan bypass.. so
    1. Set the IP of WRT to the same range but outside the dhcp of the adsl modem router.. eg if that uses 192.168.1.1 then the WRT can be used on 192.168.1.254. Adjust according to your setup.
    2. Turn off dhcp in the WRT.
    3. Plug LAN port of the modem or the TC.. makes no difference which.. to the LAN port of the WRT54G.. note LAN not WAN.
    4. Then login to the WRT and setup wireless.
If you want to use a wireless bridge. you can also do that.. download dd-wrt for the version of the WRT you have.. (except v7 which has no dd-wrt). There are instructions on the dd-wrt for universal wireless bridge.

  • How do I connect WRT54GS Router to Talk Talk MT882?

I was able to set up my Talk Talk wired SmartAX MT882 modem but I now want to use my Linksys Wireless-G WRT54GS Broadband Router but it can't connect.
I entered the Talk Talk setup using the setup cd.
I then used the Linksys setup cd to connect the router.
But part way through the setup I get a message saying:
The router is not able to connect to the internet. Try turning the cable/DSL Modem Off and back On again.
Did that and nothing changes. Still the same message.
I've seen on a couple of forums that you should change the internet connection type of the SmartAX MT882 to Pure Bridge and the Linksys WRT54GS to PPPoE.
    That doesn't change anything.
After having connected the Modem to the computer with the Ethernet cable vis the ethernet port I then take that out and place it into the internet port on the router and connect the other ethernet cable from one of the numbered ports(1-4) on the router to the ethernet port on the modem.
It seems that the modem has to be connected directly to the computer?
I'm completely stuck on what to do.

To get the Huawei SmartAX MT882 and the Linksys WRT54G to work together, you need to disable a DHCP server on one of the two (cause they are both routers, in this case we will disable the DHCP on the WRT54G). First leave the MT882 turned off and disconnected from the network for now. Connect to the WRT54G at http://192.168.1.1 with username and password set as "admin" unless you changed it beforehand. On the first page disable the DHCP server and change the address of the WRT54G to 192.168.1.200 (We are going to keep the IP within the same subnet as the MT882 but outside the range of the MT882's DCHP range). You will also need to switch the Advanced Dynamic routing on the WRT54G to the Router mode meaning that there is another router on the network. Also in the advanced dynamic routing mode turn on the the Dynamic Routing (RIP) to LAN+Wireless because we will plug in the MT882 into the LAN port (Not the WAN/Internet port) of the WRT54G. Disconnect from the WRT54G network. Plug in your MT882 directly into the computer via Ethernet or USB and log into the administration panel via http://192.168.1.1 if connected via Ethernet or http://192.168.1.2 if connected via USB. User name and password are both "admin". In the MT882 administration in the advanced setting turn on/enable RIP (Dynamic routing) for eth-0 (its most likely already enabled for ppp-0, ie. your provider, but now it is enabled with the Ethernet too). Now connect the MT882 Ethernet cable directly into one of the WRT54G's LAN ports and connect to the WRT54G with your computers via wireless or lan. Now once the computers are connected they will ask for an IP address and the WRT54G will forward them to the MT882's DHCP server for an address and thus you will get multiple computers through wireless connected to the MT882 and the "Internet". Good luck.

  • Problem connecting wrt54g to comcast

I just got connected to Comcast on a Motorola Cable Modem SBVS220.  I have a linksys WRT54G with the latest firmware.  I've set the linksys to factory default settings.  The modem connected directly to computer works great.  When I connect the modem to the linksys I have no internet access.  The ip I get from modem to computer is 98.212.248.70 subnet is 255.255.240.0 and the gateway is 98,212,240,1.  When the router is connected to the modem the internet light is not on.   Do I need to change my settings on the router or is it messed up?
    Thanks,
    Jeff Sollars

Yes. You need to change some settings on the router. Here's the procedure.
