Unsecured Guest Connection

I have set up guest connection.  When guest connects it allowes connection and does not ask for the password that was
set when I set up the guest connection.
WHY and how do I change this to make it ask for a password in order for someone to access the guest wireless connection?
I hve a Linksys E3000 router.

It might just be a browser issue. Try different internet browsers if you are trying to connect a computer to the Guest Network. Do try to use other computers or devices also that has internet browsers installed or you can install.

  • Does *new* Time Capsule let you limit bandwidth on guest connection?

I'm curious to know if the new dual-band Time Capsule/AEBS will let you limit bandwidth on the guest connection, or if it will suck up all the available bandwidth without restrictions?

I would say No to this. Apple wouldn't care much about bandwidth issue but I must admit that could be nice option to play with. But you never know.

  • Samba guest connections

    Hi,
I am trying to comprehend Samba's behaviour on one of my systems and thus I'd
like to ask a couple of quick questions:
The setup I'd like to build is just a small home network for file-sharing using guest connections.
    Here it goes,
    1) When using the following settings for guest connections,
map to guest = bad user
    guest account = nobody
does user 'nobody' have to exist both on Samba AND on the system's accounts?
If yes, is there any other way I can use Samba to serve guest connections without the need to create their respective system accounts? Why is that so?
    2) If I change the second option to
    guest account = myUnixAccountName
I notice that the system works perfectly well and serves guest connections just fine.
But how is that possible since myUnixAccountName doesn't exist on Samba?
    Thanks in advance!

    Raynman wrote:
The results you got from (2) should answer the (first) question in (1), and `man smb.conf` also says the guest account has to be an existing UNIX user (no Samba account needed). It's just used for filesystem permissions etc., since guests don't need a password anyway.
Are you happy with that or do you want it the other way around, i.e., a samba account without a unix account for guests (the bit about 'without the need to create system accounts') ? I don't think that's possible/makes sense.
    Thanks for the quick response!
You've got me completely covered about guest connections.
    However I still would like to know one final thing;
From I understand so far whenever a user wants to connect to a samba server, he/she will have
to eventually assume the identity of a UNIX user for filesystem permissions etc. as you already mentioned above.
Thus I conclude that there are 2 levels of security in filesharing. The first one is what samba allows users to see and
the second and most important is what the underlying unix system allows users to do.
In a scenario where there are 2 users alice and bob, say alice wishes to share her wallpapers in /home/alice/wallpapers.
However that folder's permissions are set to 0700. In smb.conf the wallpapers folder is made available with both reading and writing
permissions for alice and bob. Will bob be able to access and download alice's wallpapers or will he be blocked by the UNIX file permissions?
P.S. I also read here https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/servergui … urity.html that the libpam-smbpass package syncs UNIX users and passwords with the Samba user database. Does this mean that samba and UNIX passwords can't be different?
    Thanks again

  • How do I get guests connected to my wifi?

How do I get guests connected to my wifi?

What exactly are you trying to do?
Do you want to create a seperate guest network or do you want to give guests access to your network without telling them the password (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=AirPortUtility/5.1/en/ap2118.html) ?
For a seperate guest network, you need an airport extreme generation 3 or higher or a time capsule generation 2 or higher.

  • Set up a guest connection

I want to set up a guest connection to my wi-fi so I don't have to give out my password.

If your modem and AirPort Express are compatible for this purpose.....
Open AirPort Utility, select the AirPort Express and click Manual Setup
You will see a Guest Network tab below the row of icons. Click that tab, assign a name for the guest network, security, and password and  click Update to save the changes.
    The AirPort Express will restart.
If you do not see a Guest Network tab, either your version of the AirPort Express does not offer this feature or the modem that you are using is not compatible with this feature.
Post back to let us know which version of the AirPort Express that you have, and we can go over some possible options with you.

  • Linksys e2000 guest connections, limit bandwidth

How can I limit bandwith speed of guest accounts? Or are there free softwares available to do something like that? It's kinda like the hotspot softwares - where we can set hourly, daily, monthly allowances and see a report on their connectivity.
    Please help.
    Thank you

As far as I know, you can't do that with the firmware that Linksys provides for that model. Your best bet be to check out DD-wrt and see if they have that feature. I know that you can set up your router as a hotspot using their firmware. Someone else on the forums might be able to provide a specific answer. Btw, what do you mean by guest accounts?
I don't work for Cisco. I'm just here to help.

  • Is there any way to see what Guest connections are active?

The DHCP reservation popup only shows connections with full access. I can't see any way to see who/what is connected using a Guest logon. Is there any way to do this?

You can browse it a little more easily with TextWranger. You can also search it:
    http://homepage.mac.com/bagelturf/aparticles/library/libtw/libtw.html
See what happens when you restore a vault:
    http://homepage.mac.com/bagelturf/aparticles/vaults/vrestore/vrestore.html
It actually renames your existing library and creates a new one.

  • WRT1900AC Guest Network connection time limit

I think this is a fresh topic.
I have searched for this, but can't find any prior topics.
    I upgraded from a Cisco branded E4200 (v1) to a Linksys WRT1900AC.
I have noticed that the guest network for the 1900AC kicks devices off after a period of time I have not managed to determine, despite them not being disconnected from the network. The device will simply tell me that a hotspot is detected and asks me to sign in. I have to open the browser and enter the password again. This is particularly annoying for work devices on the guest network that use VPN, as I have to get that running as well.
The E4200 I had before kept guests connected as long as they were on the network; only disconnecting them or taking them out of range for more than a day required me to supply the password again.
Is this expected behaviour? I'd prefer not to be repeatedly challenged for the guest password for devices that remain connected, just like I could with the E4200.
I use the 5GHz network for all my permanently connected devices ( a mixture of fixed and dynamic IP's) and leave guests and my work devices to the guest network on 2.4GHz (all dynamic IP's). I have things spaced out well in my home as I had run into issues with interference caused to my Sonos system, which I have eliminated by moving my 2.4GHz connected equipment. The physical layout is the same from when I had my E4200 and my 1900AC, so I'm confident it isn't a physical issue.
My 2.4GHz network has its SSID hidden to discourage people from using it.

How many total guests allowed did you set on your router? Make sure that the total number of devices connecting to the Guest network would match the total guests allowed.

  • Connecting to wifi

ok how do i get my mbp to connect to a certain wifi automatically..
    here's the story.
we have 2 wifi networks: one secured, one not (dont ask LOL)
when i start it up it goes to the unsecured guest network every time.
i then have to go to the bar at the top ansd chose the secuered one
it remembers the password so all i have to do is chose it.
now that i think about it is this a router problem? did someone (my brother) set it so it kicks me off after x time?
it used to be fine before we got a new router, and if its the case where i am being disconnected after x time, its easier for me to deal with it thasn get my bro to fix it haha

waaa waaa won.. sorry thats the wrong answer
    i did as you said.
the networks are there but everything is grey out..oh wait its locked. Boing LOL
i entered my mbp pw.. wow lookie there LOL
ok i actually took out all the others so (it was picking up neighbors secured too) so the only one now is my secured..

  • Why did Mavericks disconnet my wi-fi connection?

I downloaded the free Mavericks upgrade and installed with no problem. However, for some reason my Linksys wi-fi network connection was disconnected and now I cannot reconnect unless I use the guest connection. I've tried entering the password for the main connection for my iMac but it won't go.
    Any help?
    Thanks.

I can establish an unsecure connection but nothing else. I tried uninstalling my Cisco Linksys router and resetting and reinstalling with the Cisco Setup Install CD, but I just keep getting a message that the router only supports certain OS and no other dialog windows. If this keeps up maybe I should just get a new wi-fi router and start from scratch? My current one is about two years old.

  • E2000 network guest

Just purchased an E2000 router and just had it set up. I have my network named as "yoondoggy" and the wifi is secured. When I go to search for a network on my laptop, I noticed that there was another network named "yoondoggy-guest" that isn't secure. How would I go about deleting that network?
edit - Nevermind, just figured out how to disable it.

You can disable the guest network using the Cisco connect software.
It shows that it is unsecured but there is a password for internet access. That means anyone can connect to the network but can not access the Internet without the password.
The guest network is different from your private wireless network. This is very convenient especially if you always have guests in your home who would like to access the Internet.
When guests connect to the Guest network, they can connect to the Internet but will not have access to computers and devices which are connected to your E2000 Router.  The Guest network is actually a virtual network which is separate from your local network.
The Guest network is a virtual network which operates on a different IP address range (192.168.33.x).  This allows your guests to connect to the Internet without becoming a part of your local network.

  • Network Manager crashes when connecting to wpa wifi

I am trying to connect to my college's wpa secured wlan using network-manager-applet on a fresh cinnamon installation.  When I click on the secured network in the cinnamon control center, the program crashes.  I connect fine to the unsecured guest network.  I think I may not have all the proper GUI's installed because when i click the "Connect to a Hidden Network" button, the network manager also crashes.
Did I not install the right software or is this some strange bug?

    Hi,
I'm not sure if this is useful at all, but i had problems with nm-applet and eduroam(wpa) as well. I first thought it would be due to the latest update, but then remembered that I uninstalled "gnome-keyring" some days ago. Reinstalling it solved my problem.

  • Guest Splash Page with Cisco WLCs Help

    Hi,
I need some guidance using Web Authentication / Web Pass-through to create a mandatory splash page that is presented to users of our guest WLAN.  Currently our guest WLAN is wide open, users connect and go straight through to get Internet Access. Here's what we'd like to accomplish.
    1. Have the page hosted on an external web server (i.e not on the controller)
    2. Present Terms of service
    3.
     a. Present an optional field to enter an email address & date of birth (DOB) to opt in for marketing purposes
            OR
     b. Present a mandatory field to enter an email address with an optional check box and DOB to opt in for marketing (the idea behind option b, is that whether they opt in for marketing or not, we could still some how use the email as a username, but not require a password.  In the hopes of then using this as a unique identifier in the WLC for troubleshooting / reporting purposes)
    4. At the very end, have an "I Agree" button
    5. Re-direct to our copmany's public facing website
Our controllers are 5508s, running 7.4.121.0.  I more or less have an idea of how to accomplish this, but I've never used Web Auth / Web Passthrough with a Cisco Controller before, so I'm hoping someone can clear up a few things for me.
    1. Am I correct that, when using an External server to host the login.html page, we must use Web Authentication, since Web Pass-through is only an option when using an Internal Page? Web Pass-through seems ideal for us, since we don't care about credentials, but from what I'm reading, it seems restricted to Internal (on the Controller) deployments only.
    Based on these
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/wireless-mobility/wlan-security/115951-web-auth-wlc-guide-00.html#passthrough
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/wireless-mobility/wireless-lan-wlan/116879-configure-wlc-00.html
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/wireless/4400-series-wireless-lan-controllers/107474-web-pass-config.html
    2. If Web Pass-through is not an option when using an External deployment, is there any way we could use an email address as a username, but not require a password?  If not, is hiding the username/password fields in the html code of the splash page, and using a single pre-configured default username / password the only other option ? As described here: https://supportforums.cisco.com/discussion/10847046/unsecured-guest-access-customizable-splash-page-and-logo
    3. It sounds like SSL cert warnings may be an issue even if we use an External deployment, because the controller still acts as a middle man.  Is this correct, and is the best fix to install a valid 3rd party cert on the controller?
P.S. I’m aware of the Big Brother type things that can be done with Cisco MSE and Connected Mobile Experiences, as far as guest tracking / marketing / analytics go. However, that’s way more than we’re looking to do at this point.
Thanks in advance for any guidance you can provide!

    Hello Jonathan,
The idea you have is fine, the only exception is the extra fields of information that you want to collect. From the WLC perspective this is not possible to gather.
The example given on https://supportforums.cisco.com/discussion/10847046/unsecured-guest-access-customizable-splash-page-and-logo looks very interesting, and as long as the WLC receive the information it needs to authenticate the client, you can modify the HMTL code as you want. However, as somebody state on that post, Cisco provides the html example, but we do not really support the html content creation or modification.
Anyway below on answer #2 I am giving you an idea that could work (again Im not html expert I don't know if that could be achieved that way) maybe you can have a better idea.
    To answer your queries:
    1) The customized web-passthrough page can be hosted on an external Web Server.
When the pages are on an external webserver, the passthrough is still performed on the WLC, just the pages reside on the external server. It is a good idea to be sure that the pages come up ok on the external server without webauth involved since webauth will not work unless the external webserver works
    2) We have examples of what HTML content a customized Web Passthrough page should include. If you add extra fields on the HTML code (like email address & date of birth), the WLC won't be able to handle this data and most probably you won't be able to gather this information from the WLC , unless you customize the web page in such way that it sends the fields email address & date of birth to another server (rather than to the WLC) to gather this information, but at the end what matter for the WLC is to receive the click on the "Accept" button to authenticate the client.
    3) Regarding the certificate, there are two options, the cheapest and easiest is to disable HTTPS for web authentication. Then, your guests will open an HTTP web page, without having the certificate warning.
Whether or not you perform local or external web authentication, you still hit the internal web server on the controller. When you redirect to an external web server, you still receive the certificate warning from the controller unless you have a valid certificate on the controller itself. If the redirect is sent to https, you receive the certificate warning from the controller and from the external web server, unless both have a valid certificate.
In order to get rid of the certificate warnings all together, you need to have a root level certificate issued and downloaded onto your controller. The certificate is issued for a host name and you put that host name in the DNS host name box under the virtual interface on the controller. You also need to add the host name to your local DNS server and point it to the virtual IP address (1.1.1.1) of the WLC.
This link provides information about WebAuthentication on an External Web Server, however exactly the same applies for Web Passthrough:
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/wireless-mobility/wlan-security/71881-ext-web-auth-wlc.html
Also, you can download the WebAuthentication bundle, with the examples and some useful information about different customized web pages, it can be used as a template to build your page. Here you will see that Web Passthrough to an external server is indeed a valid option, when you download and unzip it, open the "readme.html"
    https://software.cisco.com/download/release.html?mdfid=282600534&softwareid=282791507&release=1.0.2&relind=AVAILABLE&rellifecycle=&reltype=latest
    Hope this helps

Ooops, my mistake.  Thanks for pointing it out.
Another idea is to make sure the firmware is updated on the router.
Also, from the control panel of the printer: Setup > Network > Wireless Network Test.  It will self-test the printer radio.
