Unsecured wifi networks

hi. While I have no problems accessing secure networks, whenever I find an unsecured network I join it but then cannot access websites as it says I cannot connect to the server. Is there a reason for this? Are iPod touch's not meant to access unsecured networks? All help appreciated

I've had people ask why they can't use SB's network because it's not got a "lock" on it.
It is controlled, but no "open"

These WiFi networks operated what's known as a "walled garden". You get an Internet connection, but it's restricted to a special homepage from which you can only set up a login account. This allows them to charge for your Internet access (and, im my experience, it tends to be expensive). Because they're already restricting your access in this way, and they aren't bothered whether your traffic is encrypted, they don't tend to bother with WEP/WPA/WPA2.
Another kind is the WiFi network that does not use encryption (and therefore appears 'unlocked'), but does restrict on MAC Address - the equivalent of a nightclub doorman. Again, you won't be prompted for a passphrase, but you still won't get an Internet connection unless you find out the MAC addresses from the list and manage to convince the router that you're 'on the list'.
As a side note: I actually wish my iPod touch didn't prefer (and automatically connect to) these random unsecured networks instead of my own router that has a much stronger signal (as I am sitting about 3 metres away from it!).

  • I see another unsecured wifi network on my list. As I have recently changed routers etc. I just want to make sure it's not attached to me. It has a different IP address than the secured wifi network I have now set up.

I see another unsecured wifi network (D Link)  on my list. As I have recently replaced an old modem router (D link) with a new fancy one (wireless gateway), I am wondering if this is somehow still attached to my computer. The D link wifi unsecured network has a different IP address than my newly formed secure wifi network's IP address.
Also - if I turn my wifi off (regardless of if I am on the dlink or my new secured wifi) I can still watch netflix etc. on my tv from living room which tells me the the wifi is still on. Why is this so?
Does my Mac have two IP addresses or is that D link someone elses?
THank you to anyone who can straighten me out on this as I am confused.

    Thanks Tony,
Believe it or not, I had already done that - that is why I was confused as I kept seeing it in the wireless networks that I was seeing even though I had deleted it in my advanced Network of Systems Preferences. I thought if it were mine it would go away, but alas it didn't.  Anyway, all is well and I can now relax that everything is secure thanks all to you.
    Cheers

    3. Microsoft router MN-500:
Tried this old router (the one I used before purchasing the LinkSys). It is an old (circa 2002) Wireless B base station with WEP Security. The iPhone was never able to connect to the Internet using various settings, many of which were duplicates of the LinkSys tests above.
On both routers my wife's Dell laptop and my HP printer connect without incident, using the same network/security settings.
I have always been able to connect to various unsecured WiFi networks; I have never been able to connect to a secure WiFi network (although the only one I've really tried has been my own).
I am at a loss as to what to do next. Any suggestions?

    SUCCESS!!!!!
I visited my brother-in-law yesterday and attempted to connect with his secure network. By sheer luck, he is using the exact same model LinkSys router. My iPhone connected first time--so the iPhone was eliminated as a source of the problem.
I didn't do a lot of troubleshooting at his house, but I did notice that his network was set for both dynamic DHCP and dynamic DNS. I know that either or both of Windstream (my ISP) and my broadband modem requires a pair of static DNS addresses.
Sure enough, delving real deep into Windstream's support site, I discovered a LinkSys router DNS help page, specifying how to set static DNS addresses in LinkSys routers. I then accessed my router, enterd the known static addresses, saved the router settings, then rebooted the iPhone and connected to the network.
    SUCCESS!!!
Thanks to Jane, who suggested it was an ISP issue, Jason, and all at Apple support. dumonj, I'll email you directly. Try this suggestion and see if it helps.

  • Ip address already assigned when trying to login to nonsecured wifi network

I am having problems connecting and/or loading pages to an unsecured wifi network at work.  I used to be able to connect and access the internet just fine.  I think they might have been having router problems as our signal strength got weaker and weaker until none of us could connect.  I do not know what changes the administrators did on the other end, could have replaced the router or just reset it for all I know--they symptoms on our end looked like a router that was just getting bogged down slowly over time.  I do not have access to the router and the administrator(s) are all but impossible to contact.  All of a sudden, one day we had full strength wifi again and initially I could connect on occasion and even access the internet, but it was not often nor for very long, while everyone all around me has no problems connecting--I believe I may be the only Mac user on the network in the immediate vicinity.
I am using a mid 2009 Macbook Pro 2.1, running Snow Leopard, connecting with airport extreme--all the updates have been applied.  If I restart my computer with no programs running, I can connect on occasion and when checking my Airport Extreme connection under Network Preferences when it says i'm connected I am assigned a 192.XXXXXX IP address assigned by the router I think, when this happens, as soon as I try to load any browser (I've tried Safari, Chrome, and Firefox), I immediately loose all signal and checking my Network Preferences again, my IP address has been changed to a 169.XXXXXXX address and there is message below my "Turn Airport Off" button saying that wifi has assigned this address and I will not be able to connect to the internet.  This does not always happen, but almost always and I haven't been able to connect successfully for days now, however, about a week ago, after making no changes to my machine, it would connect for a short time, load pages, and then loose the connection shortly thereafter.  I don't always have to load a browser for this IP address change to occur, sometimes it comes up with this from the beginning or will just change the connectivity status after just a few moments of being connected with the other IP address.
I have found similar postings with some of the same symptom where it is suggested there may be no more DHCP licenses to be had, but everyone around me can connect without problems and get Licenses assigned, even if they connect after me.  I have tried to renew the DHCP lease with no success.  Someone suggested in another post that the network admin havs to approve my MAC address, I have not changed it and used to be able to connect without incident (and like I said, on rare occasion still can for a short time and then it drops).  I have ran the Networking troubleshooter and I get green lights on everything except Network Settings and Internet, the ISP and others are all green.  The Network Troubleshooter consistently gives up and tells me to contact my Network Administrator and to check my settings after just a few moments of trying--but I haven't changed any settings and again, on rare occasion can connect for a brief period.  I have turned my firewall off and back on several times and checked for any sites that are blocked and it just has the default settings for my firewall set.  I have tried adding sites to be allowed through and removed them, it appears to make no difference.  I have rebooted several times, turned Airport off and back on again with no success.  I have went in to look at the system log files, but can't make sense of what it's telling me.  There are many things listed in the log file, from the Network Diagnostics(2154) that says check-in of Mach service failed..something about already active: com.apple.NetworDiagnostic.agent and another with nds_res_once returned -1007 to lots of browser components failing to connect with various messages (those only seem obvious given the fact there's no internet connection).   Again, there's no security on this wifi network and everyone around me is able to connect.  I have no problems connecting to other wifi networks at various locations and maintaining connections, but this is really the only non-secured one I try to connect to.
What used to work, now isn't working and I haven't changed anything that I'm aware of on my end; I don't have access to the router nor quite possibly the network administrator (he's relatively new and extremely overworked and we are on completely different shifts).  I don't know the router make or model, but doubt very much that it's an Apple router.   I have to admit, I've always been a PC guy and am fairly proficient in configuring and running in that environment, but have been using this MBP the last year and liking it more and more as time goes by (until this incident arose)...but don't really have much knowledge of how to troubleshoot in the Mac environment.  Any help or suggestions for what I might do or try on my end would be very much appreciated--I would love to get connected again at that site!!

  • How do I share wifi data between iMac and windows based computer on wifi network?

I have an unsecured wifi network at home and need to easily share photos between computers>  I have an iMac and a couple window based computer> Is ther an easy way instead of using a thumb drive?

Since photos are typically large files it will probably be quicker with the thumb drive. The other way is to set up sharing where the files are located and directing the other computers to look there.

    Hey Dann4ever,
I would follow these steps for when you're unable to locate a Wi-Fi network on your iOS devices:
Be sure you're in range of your Wi-Fi router (access point).
Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and turn Wi-Fi off and on. If your W-Fi setting is dimmed, follow these steps.
Confirm that your Wi-Fi router and cable or DSL modem are connected to power, turned on, and connected to the Internet. If not, refer to your network administrator or Internet service provider (ISP) for assistance.
    Restart your iOS device.
Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and locate the Wi-Fi network to which you're connected.
Tap i and Forget this Network.
Try to connect to your desired Wi-Fi network.
Note: You may need to enter your Wi-Fi password again if your network requires one.
Turn your Wi-Fi router off and on2. If your ISP also provides cable or phone service, check with them before attempting this step to avoid interruption of service.
Update your device to the latest version of software.
Update your Wi-Fi router to the latest firmware2. For AirPort Base Stations, install updates using the AirPort Utility.
Verify that the network is available by tapping Settings > Wi-Fi and choosing from the available networks.Note: It may take a few seconds for the Wi-Fi network name to appear.
Move closer to your wireless router (access point) and attempt to locate the Wi-Fi network.
If you do not see the network you would like to join, you may be attempting to connect to a hidden network. Learn how to join a hidden network.
Supported Wi-Fi configurations vary by iOS device model. Find out which standards your device supports3.
Reset network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Note: This will reset all network settings including:
previously connected Wi-Fi networks and passwords
    recently used Bluetooth accessories
    VPN and APN settings

  • Ios6 and unsecured wifi not working

I can't seem to log on to unsecured wifi networks since downloading ios6.  Secured networks work perfectly - what can I do?

Sorry I have the same problem, but i don't get the solution "ignore rebooted router"? I don't understand that, could you explain a little bit please?

  • WiFi Networks and an iPod Touch.

I have seen many comments about WiFi networks and the seemingly impossibility of the iPod to connect to some.
However, I have not come across a solution to my issue - there may have been one but I confess I've not been successful at finding it!
I have set up a home network. At first I used an Airport Extreme but then it died so I set things up with a NetGear DG834GT. The home network uses a WPA2 password.
At home no problem - my MacBook Pro (Core2Duo), my son's iMac i7, my 2nd Gen iPod Touch (4.2.1) and my iPad 2 all connect great to the WiFi network.  I can surf the web etc etc. I'm a happy bunny.
When I'm out and about I often use my iPod Touch to get access to the web and my e-mails etc using WiFi.  Most networks are secured meaning you have to type in a password.  Hotels are like this and usually there is no problem once the front desk gives me the password.  The unsecured ones are often WiFi Zone Hotspots where you have to pay to continue.  I don't usually bother with these.
Some sites though offer unsecured, free access and free internet use - coffee shops in particular.  A coffee shop near me has such a network and I have absolutely no problem connecting.  However, I have come across a few networks which show up in the "Available Networks" list complete with name etc.  And yet when you select this network and try to join I get the message "Unable to join such and such Network.  Obvioulsy with no network connection there is no internet etc.
Usually I simply ignore this problem and wait until the next WiFi network is available (when I get home?).  Not quite so reliable if home is 3000 miles away!
But does anyone know why there are some networks that I cannot join?  Is there a solution for this that I can carry out?  I've tried the usual things like resetting the iPod, forgetting the network etc.  Obviously I do not have access to the router as this is owned and operated by the company/enterprise concerned.
Not a show stopper by any means but an irritation nevertheless.  Incidentally, there were also a few networks recently on my travels where both the Touch and the iPad behaved the same.  i.e. I couldn't join some networks with either device.
    Thoughts?

Interesting hypothesis B-rock.  I could try contacting the network administrator but my guess is that I'll be met with a blank look when I ask for that! Still can't be bad to try!
Another piece of "anecdotal" evidence for you.  At the local garden centre (which is part of a chain) I used to be able to connect - no problem.  Then suddenly all connections failed - at all locations.  I am leaning towards believing that they have changed routers to more "modern" ones and for some reason these new routers won't allow connection to an iPod/iPad etc.  As yet I cannot confirm this or otherwise and unless someone comes up with a bright idea I'm left with the feeling that unless the network administrator recognises that he/she needs to create a network that works with iPads/iPhones etc we're doomed.  I noticed that the next table over using a PC had no problems!  Grrrr.

  • IPad 2 can only connect to unsecured Wireless network.  It won't connect to my secured network at home or at work

Two days ago my ipad 2 with (wifi only) will not connect to my secured network even though it show's up as available with a strong signal.  It keeps rejecting my password.  I brought the Ipad to work and the same issue.  However I am able to connect to an unsecured wireless network with no issue.  Is this a network/router issue or an ipad issue?  If it's a network issue what is the fix? calling my internet provider to change router settings?

    - I've used the correct pw (it worked till 2 days ago)
    - I use road runner from Time warner, not sure of the mac address filtering
    -Security is WPA PSK.
I called road runner to request they remove my pw and see if i can access my wireless if that works which i believe it will then it has to be a security issue.  I'm using a 802.11n wifi access point, if that means anything.

  • Unable to connect to unsecured wifi

My iPhone was unable to connect to my workplace unsecured wifi. The IP address, as well as the other details are as follows:
    IP Adress : 10.182.203.17
    Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.192
    Default Gateway : 10.182.203.1
    Preferred DNS Server : 161.142.201.17
    Alternate DNS Server : 161.142.2.17
I faced no problem in connecting to the network using my laptop or other mobile devices. Please advise for the correct setting as this is the only mean of communication on my workplace. Thank you.

Is your employer doing MAC address filtering? A completely unsecured wireless network in a place of business just seems stupid. MAC address filtering would only allow specific network adapters to connect (for example, those in company owned/approved devices) and would not be apparent to anyone attempting to connect casually.
If so, you'll have to ask them to add the MAC address for your phone to the permitted devices list.

after my mac is left standing over 20 to 30 minutes it drops my secured wifi and locks on to some neighbor's unsecured wifi

Go to system preferences, then network, select wifi tab on the right, click the lock icon on the bottom left and type an administrator's password, then click on advanced. When in the advanced menu, select the tab: WiFi. Locate your neighbor's wifi and select it, and press the minus button and click ok. This should stop your computer remebering your neighbor's wifi.

  • Defaulting to connect to unsecured wireless networks

I noticed that the iPhone's wifi defaults to unsecured networks, even if there are stronger secured networks that are saved in your phone. As an example, by my house I can view optimum wifi in the list, but it is too far away to actually connect to. However, my phone will try to connect to it instead of the house's secured wifi network which is saved in the phone. I am suggesting that secured networks be given priority over unsecured ones, or it should at least be a feature that you can toggle in your wifi settings. Thank you for your time.

Choose the unsecured network by taping on the blue arrow, then hit "forget this network" explained in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3867

  • MacBook Pro Retina stopped detecting wifi network in one location.

Hey everyone, experiencing kind of a weird problem and was hoping someone would be able to help.   I was doing some studying at a Starbucks, connected to their WiFi network when randomly my computer lost connection to their network and was no longer able to detect that it even exists. I was worried this was some sort of problem with my wifi card as it could no longer detect any networks nearby, where as before it was detecting multiple networks in the area of the Starbucks. Oddly i was still able to connect to the network on both my iPad 2 and iPhone 4S. Upon returning home I was relieved to find that I was still able to connect to my home wifi network. Since then i've been to many locations with my laptop but not once had an issue connecting to or detecting wifi networks, with the exception being at that Starbucks location. I've returned many times hoping that the problem would somehow fix itself, and that maybe it was just a problem with their network, but that doesn't seem to be the case. It seems to be that for whatever reason something happened to the MacBook pro while I was at that Starbucks location that has caused it to no longer detect the wifi networks there, and only there.  One possibility could be the I updated Mountain Lion to the 10.8.2 supplemental update while there, but I don't see how that would cause the problem. If anyone has any ideas as to a solution that would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!

I considered the network hog point, but I don't believe that I was using any excessive amounts of bandwidth. Also, because I can no longer detect any networks at the Starbucks location (not just the Starbucks network) I don't believe that this is the problem. Also, when I updated the operating system I was sure to disconnect from wifi first, I had already downloaded the update on my home network, just had yet to restart to install it, so my security shouldn't have been an issue either.  How exactly can I go about masking my MAC address so I could double check to see if it was the network issue?
Oh, also, I booted into Windows 7 via boot camp and for some reason Windows is also unable to detect any networks while at Starbucks as well, which is even more confusing.  I don't know if it's worth mentioning, but I bought this MacBook pro retina in Canada and am now in There UK for school. I've heard that north American macs don't play well with one of the network channels that is commonly used over here, so that also may play a role in all of this. But considering that I was able to consistently use their wifi for a couple weeks with no issue, I don't see how that could be the problem. As far as WEP encrypted goes, the network is unsecured so I don't believe that's the problem.
Thanks for the response, I appreciably appreciate it!
