Unsecured Wireless Network

I just reset my AEBS and it kept saying base station password is set to "public" so I changed it to another word with same amount of letters to be safe.
I'm hard wired to my WinXP desktop and wireless on WinXP laptop and Mac G4 Powerbook.
Powerbook controls base station.
My WinXP laptop keeps warning me that my network is unsecured and data can be viewed.....BEFORE when I tried adding a password (which was herpcs21) and setting it to WEP .....I was able to access with password on Mac all night and then updated port forward section and then suddenly it kept telling me password was wrong. No wireless could connect.Hard wired pc worked though.
So I want my network to be secure but I don't want to go through this whole password trouble again.
How to I secure it and still be able to connect easily on wireless pc and mac?

The password you just reset is for the administration of the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS), not for WEP or WPA encryption.

WEP or WPA encryption is only for wireless connectivity. It has nothing to do with connecting via a wire.
So I want my network to be secure but I don't want to go through this whole password trouble again.
How to I secure it and still be able to connect easily on wireless pc and mac?
To secure you wireless network, you can use either WEP or WPA. WPA is preferred. You setup security using the AirPort Admin Utility which you will find in the /Applications/Utilities folder on your Mac. Then when connecting with the Mac, you enter the WPA password (only once if you elect to save the password in your KeyChain.) Similiarly, you can save the password after entering it the first time on the PCs.

Two days ago my ipad 2 with (wifi only) will not connect to my secured network even though it show's up as available with a strong signal. It keeps rejecting my password. I brought the Ipad to work and the same issue. However I am able to connect to an unsecured wireless network with no issue. Is this a network/router issue or an ipad issue? If it's a network issue what is the fix? calling my internet provider to change router settings?

I called road runner to request they remove my pw and see if i can access my wireless if that works which i believe it will then it has to be a security issue. I'm using a 802.11n wifi access point, if that means anything.

WRT54G - deleting unsecured wireless network

I was able to add a Wireless Network, and thought I had it secured,however; it was only an unsecured wireless network. How can I delete if from my Wireless Network List... I have attempted to change it to a secured Network, but this did not work and I cannot figure out how to delete it. This network is not on my Home Computer. In Network Connections I only have a Local Area Connection and whenI check Network Places, I only show Internet Connections IE: My Websites on MSN & My shared Documents.
However; my laptop has a list of wireless networks to choose from.
All are secured Networks, except one --
linksys - Unsecured wireless network.

Unexpected 2nd (unsecured) wireless network

I don't remember all the nitty gritty but I think somehow I'd unintentionally created two wireless networks with my new router (model WRT54G v8), assuming that it is possible.
I used LELA and successfully created a secured wireless network with a SSID of "zfutbol". I successfully added a couple of laptops to the network.
Everything was fine until I started playing with the wireless network security method. I inadverdently set "zfutbol" to unsecure. I tried to restore the previously established secured network using LELA and successfully changed the network back to a secured network. However all of a sudden I started 8to see an additional unsecured wireless network named "linksys" with the same strength as the secured "zfutbol" network. The unsecured "linksys" network also appears in my preferred network list. Two things suggest that I was the one who created this unsecured network: 1) I never saw "linksys" until I tried to restore "zfutbol" security, and 2) "linksys" has the same signal strength (100%) as "zfutbol".
LELA only shows that "zfutbol" is my secured network. My question is that how do I verify that "linksys" was indeed created by me? If I did create "linksys", how do I delete it permanently? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have WRTP54G (Rotuer with 2 phone ports ver : 3.1.17 ) My voip provider is viatalk and comcast is my cable internet provider who gave me a modem and everything works fine.
Now I switched my internet to "AT&T" and got wireless router with modem 2wire brand model : 2701HG-B.
I have to connect the 2wire router to get internet access and I have linksys router with phone ports, can I follow your instructions and connect the "ethernet out of 2wire router" to "internet port of linkysrouter" and disable router on my linksys and will still my voip phones work?.
Note: I have full access to my linksys router including phone configurations etc.,

Legality of using an unsecured wireless network

If you pop open your laptop and see it has found a wireless connection and you know it isn't a public access point, is there anything wrong with using it?

Defaulting to connect to unsecured wireless networks

I noticed that the iPhone's wifi defaults to unsecured networks, even if there are stronger secured networks that are saved in your phone. As an example, by my house I can view optimum wifi in the list, but it is too far away to actually connect to. However, my phone will try to connect to it instead of the house's secured wifi network which is saved in the phone. I am suggesting that secured networks be given priority over unsecured ones, or it should at least be a feature that you can toggle in your wifi settings. Thank you for your time.

Why won't my time capsule show up when I scan for a wireless network when I plug in the ethernet cable from my comcast modem?

I just setup my cable and internet at my new place yesterday thru comcast. The internet works when it is plugged directly from my modem to my iMac but when I try to plug the modem up to my time capsule to set up wireless and go through air port utilites it can not find my time capsule

Anytime you change networking hardware, it is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle of your networking components.
I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
Power-up your computer(s).
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

I have a Dell Latitude E6440 running Win 7
Enterprise 64 on a domain. It will connect to any unsecured network, and it can see the secured network in the list when I click the wireless connection icon on the system tray. When I go to manage wireless networks, the secured network does not show
up (and thus, I cannot delete the network to try to re-add it). Normally, we would add the secure network here. I click Add, give the name in the correct syntax, add the needed information (WPA/2-Enterprise, EAS or TKIP), and hit Next, it immediately returns
with "An unexpected error occurred". A similar thing happens when I hit Connect from the list of available networks that pops up when I open the system tray icon: it says it was unable to connect, when I hit troubleshoot, it says that it could not
identify the problem. The event log shows the error below. I haven't been able to find any resolutions here or elsewhere that address the fact that I can connect to unsecured wireless networks, but not secured wireless networks.
Other notable troubleshooting steps:
Uninstalled/Reinstalled wireless adapter with the latest driver
Other laptops are able to access the same secure wireless network
The first WLAN-AutoConfig error in the event log was Event ID: 12013, attempting a 802.1x authentication. Then Event ID: 11006; stating "Explicit Eap failure received". After a few days of alternating all 3 errors, they started to only error on
Event ID 8002.

Need help connecting to BEFW11S4 wireless network

A friend I visit often has a BEFW11S4 router. Other friends who visit connect immediately to the unsecured wireless network. Unfortunately, for unknown reasons I'm unable to connect with either of my laptops, so have to plug in the LAN. This is the only place I've ever had a problem connecting to a wireless network.
My laptops are Toshiba Satellites, running Windows XP Home & Office, respectively. Sometimes they won't even recognize the network, or when they do, just won't connect. I've gone through the tutorial and all settings numerous times, turned off the firewall, turned off Norton and still no luck. Any help getting me connected is appreciated. Thanks.

In your computer, go to your wireless software, and go to "Preferred Networks" (sometimes called "Profiles" ). There are probably a few networks listed. Delete any network named "linksys". Also delete any network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use. Delete any existing entry for your friend's network. Reboot your computer. Return to "Preferred Networks" and add your friends SSID. Then select this SSID and make it your default network, and set it to automatic login. You may need to go to "settings" to do this, or you may need to right click on your network and select "Properties" or "settings". Reboot computer. You should login automatically when computer boots up.

Home cable wireless network doesn't show up in available networks

Hi, I've just arrived in a new apartment with an iBook G4. I travel a lot and am able to easily pick up and connect to wireless networks. The apartment I've moved into has Time Warner Cable service, including a cable modem and a Belkin wireless router. The other three roommates all have PCs and connect just fine. I have looked at their computers, and they are connected to "WLAN", an "unsecured" wireless network. Although I am in very close proximity (i.e. 2 feet), I still CANNOT get the network to even show up on my list of available networks. It shows lots of other networks belonging to other apartments in the building, but it won't show the one for this apartment. I have tried all the other names that DO come up and they are not this one. I called TWC and they said I will have to buy an Airport wireless router if I want it to work with my Mac. Is this true? I don't know why the Belkin-based network wouldn't even *show up* in my list! It's not like it shows up and then I can't connect... it's like it's completely invisible. At the moment, the modem/router are unconnected to any other computer; they're just hooked up to the TWC cable. As an intermediate solution, I unplug the ethernet cable that connects the modem to the router, and then plug it into my computer. It works fine with ethernet connection between the modem and my computer, but I can't get my iBook to recognize the Belkin wireless router.

You DO NOT need an Airport Router. That is a tech person that is pretending to know Apple computers.
Your network might be "hidden" so that others (like your neighbors) cannot see it and use it.
I would check the name of the network on your roomates' computers. The when you try to connect use the choose another network option. You will be prompted to type the network name. Type the name exactly as it appears on the other computers (case sensitive).
If it is truly unprotected that should work.
I could also be Mac Address sensitive which is another issue, but try this first.

My 13in Macbook Pro can't see a wireless network but my friends Macbook Pro can

Me and my friend both have identical 13 in Macbook Pro's except he has 250 gb and I have 350gb. Everything else is the same even the wireless card. The problem is, he can see and connect to a unsecured wireless network but i can't. Why is this ?
Our computers can see the same networks on the list but my Macbook does not see one network, the unsecured network !!!

I never said there wasn't an issue, just that blame could not be assigned based on what we know now and that there are many more people not having problems with Leopard and WiFi than those that are.
In my circle of associates I know of literally hundreds of Mac owners, of which approximately three are having WiFi issues.
I know how frustrating it is to be one of those afflicted - my stories of constant WiFi drops for the first six months I owned my MBP have been recounted in several threads.
But it's just as frustrating to read how Leopard is just plain broken when in fact I've not seen a single WiFi drop in Tiger or Leopard since February 2007.
This is also why I've continually urged people experiencing the problem to open an AppleCare case - it's only then that Apple Engineering can find the commonalities in cases where WiFi is failing and either fix their driver or notify the router manufacturer of their bug.
Are there bugs with AirPort in Leopard? Of course, and I even know of one that affects me on occasion that's known, and that's a failure to reassociate with a known network when waking from sleep. The workaround is simple - toggle AirPort off and back on - but it's a known issue nevertheless.
But each of these threads addresses an individual problem, and among the numbers of people experiencing difficulties, few report that their Mac sees no wireless networks, and that's what the advice I've given in this thread is geared towards.

By default, the AirPort Express will broadcast an unsecure wireless network with a Network Name of something like: Apple Network NNNNNN. Your iPad should "see" this network and be able to connect to it. Have you tried going through the iPad's Settings > Wi-Fi > Choose a Network... option. If so, does the AirPort's wireless network appear in the list of available networks?

Unsecured wireless guest network.

I have Linksys E3000 router.
I have 2 wireless networks set up: One named BigMoose which shows to be secured. The guest wireless neetwork is
BigMoose-guest. It shows that it is unseured.
My problem is: I don't know how to make it secured. I have a seperate password for the uest site but when someone signs
into it they are not asked for the password.
Can someone please help me with this?
I am using Widows 7 Ultimate on my desktop and Windows 8.1 on my laptop. Also 8.1 on my Windows Surface Pro.

Guest network is secured. It appears to be unsecured but once you will access a website it will prompt you for the password, @cuberoot is correct there is no option to unsecure the guest network if there is teach me how.
Guest networks are designed for guest, so that if you have visitors they couldn’t access your files because it has a different IP address. The IP address of the guest network is 192.168.3.XX

Remote can't find iTunes on mix wired/wireless network

I am trying to control music from a iMac running iTunes using the iPhone Remote app. I've previously done this successfully with a wireless only network (using the Airport Express wifi to join my existing wifi network etc).
However, since introducing D-Link Homeplugs into my network, I am unable to 'see' the iTunes library from the Remote app when I connect wirelessly to the airport express.
My hardware is configured as follows:-
*Netgear Router (wireless disabled) -> Homeplug power network -> iMac running iTunes*
And elsewhere on the Homeplug network, I have:
H*omeplug power network -> Airport Express [set up as wireless access point]*.
If I connect the Express to the iTunes machine directly - leaving the wireless access details the same - it all works fine. If I move the Airport Express and reconnect over the Homeplug network, the Remote fails to 'see' the library, although I can still send music over the network (using the iTunes interface on the iMac) to the remote speakers.
My network uses the router as a DHCP (range 192.168.0.x mask 255.255.255.0), Airport Express is connected to Homeplug ethernet with a static IP (in the same range) and provides wireless access (unsecured for now while i get this working). The iMac has a static IP (in the same range). If I swap the iMac for a PC (XP - using DHCP from the router for IP), I get the same result. If I use an iPhone network application to view the network (connected by the wifi access point on the AX) then I can see all the machines on my network as I would expect.
To reiterate, if I cable this network directly (either AX->iMac or AX->hub->iMac) then it works. As soon as I go AX->Homeplug power network->iMac then the Remote app loses sight of the library.
I wouldn't expect any firewall on the wired->wireless networks on my router (a Sky branded Netgear 934g). I also didn't think that the Homeplugs would block.
So does anyone have any ideas why the Remote application loses sight of my iTunes library when connecting via Airport Express cabled into a Homeplug ethernet network ?

Home wireless network trouble

I got a new wireless router, Netgear WPN824 from Newegg, a refurbished product. I set up a home wireless network using the online manual on the Netgear website. The router works well for the wired setup. But I could not connect to wireless.
My wireless network shows up on the list of available wireless networks. I can connect to other wireless networks such as that of my neighbour's. I tried connecting to my network using both unsecured and secure WEP / WPA modes. Except once, I could never connect. That one time, as soon as I could connect and verify that I was indeed connected I thought the problem was resolved and so shutdown my system to see if i could connect again - alas, same trouble again. I use NetworkManager to connect, and here's the output for two networks - jaydoc which is my home network, and linksys, that of my neighbour's to which i can always connect.

Is the wireless router i got a dud, being refurbished i took my chances and maybe i wasn't so lucky..! Or is it something wrong in my network settings..? I tried shutting down everything and then turning the modem, then the router and finally the PC without the ethernet cable connected. Still I am unable to connect.
Any help is deeply appreciated. I am a total newbie in networking...!

that is what my router status is at the moment. and I am able to connect to the wired network using the router. However I still cannot connect wireless. I did not see any settings in the wireless settings page of the router that ask for DHCP server names/addresses. This is the current logfile output

So if its still a DHCP problem, it seems to be affecting only the wireless part. How can I make wireless use the same DHCP servers as the wired..? Or is there something else wrong here..?
