Unsharp Mask on Adjustment Layer crushing whites during fade?

I'm using Premiere CS6 with video footage from a Canon T2i. However, the issue appears regardless of the video source.
When I apply a Film Dissolve to a clip in the timeline, then add an Adjustment Layer with an Unsharp Mask on a track above the clip, the whites in the clip appear to become crushed over the length of the transition, while still fading to black. This does NOT happen if I use a Sharpen filter instead of an Unshark Mask, and if I apply the Unsharp Mask to the clip directly instead of using an Adjustment Layer. Fading with another clip looks normal as well, the whites only get crushed when fading to black.
If the problem had to do with the Film Dissolve processing in a linear color space, then I would expect similar results with the Sharpen filter. Likewise, if the problem had to do with the Unshark Mask, then I would expect to see the same thing when it is applied to the clip directly.
Any ideas? I appriciate the help!

Looks like a bug. Thanks. I'll escalate it.
Workaround looks good, so thanks for that too! Nice find.

I think it has to do with blend modes, but can't say for sure.

  • Unable to create a mask on Adjustment layer

    hi.
I want to apply motion tracking data to a mask, therefore i'm trying to utilize an adjustment layer to control the mask position. So i tracked motion on a video footage, applied tracking data to Adjustment layer, then marked the Adjustment layer and drew a closed mask on it. However, when i finish the mask, it does not "cut the hole" on the video footage (which is right below the Adjustment layer). Tried all the available modes (Add, Subtract, Intersect, etc.) but only the outlines of the mask's shape are visible on the video footage.
How can i apply a mask to an adjustment layer? Or maybe there are other methods to apply motion tracking data to a mask?
    thank you

I think that you're misunderstanding how masks on adjustment layers are supposed to work. If you draw a mask on an adjustment layer, you are restricting the area within which the effects on the adjustment layer apply; it does not, as you say "cut a hole in the video footage". If you want to "cut a hole in the video footage", then you make the mask on the footage layer, not the adjustment layer.

  • Photoshop Elements 9 Layers not functioing (Layer Mask and Adjustment layer)

Does ayone know of a problem with PS Elements 9 layers and Windows 7?

What happens when you try to use layers?

  • Why use layer masks and adjustment layers?

I've been using PSE and CS successfully for years.
One thing I have never understood is: why use layer masks and adjustment layers, instead of simply creating a copy of the subject layer (the one I want to make changes to) and experimenting with that?  It's quick (Ctrl-J), I can do it as many times as I want, I'm not affecting my Background layer.  If I like the changes, I can keep them.  I can switch the copy on and off to compare with the Background layer.  I can do any type of blend or combination I desire.  I can insert Gradient layer(s), select any part of the copy and (Ctrl-J) create a new layer containing only the selected part.  I can adjust size, rotate, do anything.
It almost seems that "layer mask" and "adjustment layer" are mainly another layer of terminology; can anyone explain (preferably in 50 words or less) how they are intrinsically different from or superior to working with copies of the Background layer?  What can be done with them that can't be done simply using copies of the Background layer?

Here's a very basic example of the advantage of using a layer mask.
I have this picture of a sunflower and I want to convert the background to black & white, leaving just the flower in color.  I duplicated the Background layer, converted it to B&W and proceeded to use the Eraser to uncover the flower color. But I made a mistake and erased outside the flower.  There is no way to correct this other than deleting the layer and starting again.
Now let's use a layer mask on the B&W layer. Set the Foreground/Background colors to the defaults black/white. Using the Brush tool paint on the mask with black to reveal the color.  Here I painted too far, revealing a green leaf in the background.  No need to start over.  Simply switch to white and paint the excess to convert back to the B&W.
Tip: while painting you can type "X" to toggle between black and white.
You could also select the flower using the various selection tools and then fill the selection with black. If it turns out the selection was not 100% accurate you can then fine-tune the result by painting on the mask with black or white as necessary.

Should not be a problem. Check your Brush Blending Mode in the Options bar

  • Layer Mask with Adjust Skin Tones?

Is there a way to use a layer mask with the adjust skin tone option in PE4? I like what it did to the skin , but not what it did to the wall in the photo. Thanks.

Hi Jon there are at least three ways.
#1..Make a selection.. then apply the skin tone option. Only the selected area will be active.
#2... Duplicate the layer you want to work on. Apply the skin tone. Then hold the Ctrl key and make a new layer. The new blank layer will be below the layer with the skin tone. Then hold the Alt key and click between the two layers to group them. The skin tone will disappear but you can paint it back with a black brush, or remove with an eraser. Just be sure to have the blank layer active.
#3... Duplicate and apply tone as in #2. Open an adjustment layer, like levels, directly below the skin tone layer. Click ok do not make any adjustments. Then as above hold the Alt key and click between the layers to group them, look for the link symbol. Now you can remove with a black brush or add with a white brush.

  • How copy an alpha channel mask to an adjustment layer?

I can copy an alpha channel mask to an image layer by Ctrl+Clicking the alpha channel then clicking the Add Layer Mask icon in Photoshop CC but this does not work for an adjustment layer. How can I copy the mask from an alpha channel to the layer mask for an adjustment layer? Thanks.

I am using Photoshop CC as I stated in my question. All updates have been installed.
I am running on Win 7 Pro 64 bit with all updates installed.
    I am editing a photograph.
I have an alpha channel with a grey scale mask.
If I Ctrl+Click the alpha channel then click the Add Layer Mask button to add a layer mask to an image layer the alpha channel mask is added to the image layer.
If I delete the layer mask from an adjustment layer and follow the same steps a solid white mas is added to the adjustment layer.
Several others in the camera club I belong to have tried this with the same result so the problem is not unique to my system.
    Hope this helps.

  • Black&White adjustment layer problem

    Hi all,
When I try to apply a black&white adjustment layer in Photoshop CS3 Ext., I get the dreaded message: "Could not complete yor request because of a program error". This is true for Tiffs and PSDs (8bit multi layered or 8bit flat) but not for jpegs. Is this a bug or a feature? Or am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks for you time,

Could be a hardware acceleration issue with the b&w effect. Turn off OpenGL to verify. also make sure your adjustment layer is not clipped/ masked/ repositioned/ smaller than your comp. Remeber: The adjustment layer merely defines the area to which the effect will be applied, the actula processing still happens on the buffer below it. For anything else we will need more info ansd screenshots. We do not even know what version of AE you are referring to.

  • Cross-dissolve from white frame to adjustment layer no longer works in CC 2014

Windows 7, Premiere Pro CC 2014
I have a video clip in a nested sequence on V1 and an adjustment layer on V2.
I want to dissolve from a white frame to the clip using the adjustment layer.
In PP CC (not 2014) this was simple:
Starting with a white PNG graphic on V2, cross-dissolve to the adjustment layer.
However, in PP CC 2014, this causes a dissolve to BLACK over the duration of the dissolve and then a CUT to the video.
This behavior in CC 2014 is illogical. Why has it changed?
There are other ways to do this, but this one was quick and easy, and is required for hundreds of clips in existing sequences / projects.
Response from support via live chat:
    thank you for your patience
the adjustment is layer is not functioning properly

please mention it in the feature/bug request form

For me with a color matte it shows exactly the same behavior as with a PNG.
You're dissolving between the matte and the adjustment layer on V2?

  • CS4: Black-and-White adjustment layer - no Saturation slider?

Hi. The modal dialogue for Black and White has the "Colorize" option and for that "Hue" and "Saturation" sliders.
But Black and White as an adjustment layer in the adjustments palette does NOT offer the Saturation slider. At least not in my CS4 Extended on Win XP. There is the targeted adjustment tool (TAT), but it changes color, not saturation.
Can that be or am i missing something?
    Thanks!

The interesting thing is that there is an colorization saturation adjustment slider in the imag-adjustment-black and white dialog as shown below.
The lack of that slider in the adjustment panel is a bug in CS4. It was present in CS3.
Adobe should fix that because it is really usefull because it's non-destructive and can be set as a preference.
The cumbersome workaround is to add a hue saturation adjustment layer.

  • When I select an adjustment layer I do not automatically get a mask.

Every adjustment layer tutorial that I watch suggests that when I select an adjustment layer I should get a mask with it.  I must have something set incorrect because in my case I must actually choose a mask manually.
    Any ideas?

Cs4/Cs5 look on the adjustments panel flyout menu and check add Mask by Default.
Cs2/Cs3 look at the Layers Palette options from the flyout menu.

  • PS not allowing me to add a Black & White Adjustment layer

    Hi,
    Hope you're well.
There is a photo I've downloaded from the Internet that is by a photographer who shoots in Black & White. However, when I print out the photo it comes out sepia. I tried adding a Black & White Adjustment layer, but when I go to click on the button in the adjustment palette it's grayed out. I've tried this on other photos of the photographer and does it fine.
Any idea what is going on and how it can be resolved? Thanks!

Well, let's assume you are in Grayscale. But just to be sure, open the image and look at the document title bar, it should read something like Gray/8. This indicates your color mode (other modes can be RGB, CMYK, Index and others...). The color settings are found Edit>Color Settings. But don't worry about those for the time being.
Can you give the specs for your printer? Inkjet printers use all colors in printing a grayscale image. Ideally, they do this in percentages that create a neutral tone on the paper. If some of the nozzles are clogged, or if you have wrong choices in the Print Dialog, you will definitely see a color cast. Printing only with black ink will not yield photo-quality results.
Make sure the most recent driver for the printer is installed.
Also, what version of Photoshop on what OS?

  • Adjustment Layer with Exclusion Mask

I need to adjust an image but leave selected portions untouched.
Alternatively I might like to adjust only the selected portions.
Could you please outline the required steps in setting up these procedures, or point me to a good source for doing so.

Could you please post a screenshot with the pertinent Panels (with meaningful Panel Options) visible?
An active Selection when creating an Adjustment Layer will by default be used as a positive Layer Mask.
