Unsquishing 16:9 video from 4:3...

I somehow managed to import 16:9 footage into a squished 4:3 format.  When I put it into a wide-screen project, it stays picture box with black frame on sides.  Is there a way to stretch the footage back to 16:9?

OK The good news is that this is easily fixed.
DV is a format that records the same whether it is 16:9 or 4:3. They both use 720x480 pixels (which is 3:2). The camera will be optimized for either 4:3 or 16:9, and it will set an anamorphic flag to indicate which it is. Then, on playback, the anamorphic flag tells the playback device to use square pixels to produce 4:3, or to use rectangular pixels to produce 16:9.
In your case, somehow this anamorphic flag may have been stripped off.
I recommend that you download a free utility called MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5.
Open MPEG Streamclip.
Now, in iMovie, go to your Event that contains the DV. Right-Click on any DV clip, and select "Reveal In Finder".
From this Finder window, drag a DV clip into MPEG Streamclip. In MPEG Streamclip, select FILE/EXPORT AS DV, and choose the correct aspect ratio. It will ask you to provide a file name and location. Create a folder on your desktop to collect these. Do Not change the filename. (It contains metadata from the camera.)
Now you should have a DV clip with the proper anamorphic flag.
Now repeat for the additional clips. MPEG Streamclip has a batch mode, so it is possible to do a bunch of similar clips at once.
Once you are done, import these into iMovie, using FILE/IMPORT Movie and navigate to the folder on your desktop.
Alternatively, you could drag the whole folder on your desktop to the Movies/iMovie Events folder on your internal drive, or to the iMovie Events folder at the top level of a properly formatted external drive, and then restart iMovie. iMovie will recognize the new Event folder and create thumbnails.
I think that's everything. I did that from memory, so ask questions if you find a step that is not clear.

  • Export video from multiple iOS devices to a Mac without using iTunes

I am tasked with importing video files from multiple iPads to a single Mac to aggregate for editing.
The file sizes on each device are many gigs large. I don't want to use iMovie on the Mac or iOS.
I don't want to use iTunes (since there are many iPads not owned by me to import video from).

iTunes. Other than that there is no direct method. However, do try the iPhone forums.

Shot videos ONLY in landscape. For photos choose what's you like. Maybe you have to rotate photos on PC. What's your operating system?

  • Unable to capture video from Sony HD HDR-HC7

I am trying to import video from a Sony HD HDR-HC7 into Final Cut Pro 5.1.1 using the log an capture feature. I have tried most combinations of the presets, but the device is never seen.
iMove (both iLife8 and the earlier version) has no problem at all seeing the camera. However, I do have to set the camera to HDVout rather than DVout for iMovie to see it.
    Thanks.

  • Unable to capture video from VHS through DAC-200

    (Running Final Cut Pro 5.1.4)
I have a DAC-200 to hook up my VCR to my G5 in order to capture video from VHS tapes into Final Cut. I had this set-up working a few months ago, but it was disconnected to rearrange equipment and now I can't get it working again. I have followed the advice from the DAC-200 installation instructions and advice from other forum topics but can't seem to get it to work. I finally was able to get something in the log and capture window besides "preview disabled" and "cannot capture because there is no video." I now can get Final Cut to capture video, however it only captures a blank black screen (and this is all I can see in the preview window).
I've triple-checked every cable hook-up, the G5 recognizes the converter box, the video tape plays fine to a tv. I've even had our IT-guy here at work come check out my set-up for help and he can't figure out what is wrong either. (He did get my log&capture window to get white fuzz in the black screen at one point though. Does that mean anything?)
Any help is greatly appreciated! (I'm happy to answer any other questions too.) Thanks!

I had difficullty with the X.4.10 plus QT7.2 and put my info on the Forum as well as sending feedback to Apple. Shortly afterwards, Apple brought out a short security update which I downloaded and, hey presto, I was then able to use QT7.2 with OSX.4.10. It may be that you missed out on the later small update to QT7.2..... ? Another factor I found was that some little while later I again had a problem so I again installed QT7.2 and over-installed FCP5.1.4 which has resolved my problems for the time being. Worth a try if you still can't get through on the DAC.

MHP and OCAP only use JMF 1.0, which does not include support for capturing video. You will not be able to do this in any current MHP/OCAP imlementation that I know of.

  • Unable to properly capture HD video from miniDV tape in FCE

unable to capture HD video from miniDV tape
When I connect my Sony HDR-HC3 miniDV HDV camcorder to my iMac via firewire cable and use Final Cut Express to capture the video from the tape, I do not get a Capture window that allows me to specify in and out points, I just get a playback window that immediately starts capturing and the only option I have in this window is hit ESC to stop capturing. If I let this capture window continue to capture the video from the camera with miniDV HD tape, then the entire tape would be captured as one massive single video clip.
QUESTION: Is there something I change or do to make the proper capture window appear where I can specify in and out points to capture from tape for each clip?
NOTE: using same camera and tape with iMovie with automatic capture enabled, all the clips get captured properly. I also tried to use the manual setting in iMovie and it worked too.
More details(read only if you want more information)
I have a several miniDV tapes containing HD video created on a Sony Sony HDR-HC5 and Sony HDR-HC7. Unfortunately, both these camera were stolen, and I have since moved to a camera that uses flash memory, not tape. However, I need to get the video footage off these tapes, so I bought a used Sony HDR-HC3, it plays the HD miniDV tapes just fine and iMovie reads the video from this camera just fine, but Final Cut Express does not.
When I setup Final Cut Express, I used the Easy Setup and specified:
    Format: HD
    Rate: 29.97 fps
    Use: HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60
These setting match those of the camera and recorded tape. If I use any other settings but these, then Final Cut Express never sees the camera and never opens any capture window at all. Using Quicktime 10 movie inspector on the clips captured by iMovie from same camera, all the clips match this setting too.
    Final Cut Express version 4.0.1
    iMovie 09 Version 8.0.2 (821)
iMac 2.93 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3 running
    Mac OS X Version 10.6.4
My Final Cut Express scratch disk is a Seagate 2TB external USB 2.0 Hard Drive that has been formatted to be Mac OS Extended (Journaled). This external disk is also where iMovie successfully captured all the video from the same camera.

Thanks for the answer. It makes me sad. I thought using Final Cut Express would be an upgrade to a more robust editing system from iMovie, yet iMovie does a superior job of logging and capturing video from HDV video on miniDV tape in comparison to FCE. Not only does iMovie capture each clip on the tape into it's own video file automatically, it also includes timestamp information in the filename indicating when the clip was originally recorded, which appears to be something that is missing from Final Cut Express. Now I realize that HDV miniDV cameras had a relatively short life span in the consumer marketplace and have since all been replaced by flash and hard drive based AVCHD cameras, but from circa 2004 to 2007, miniDV HDV camcorders were very popular and I am sure there are lots of consumers that must be super frustrated by Final Cut Express limited ability to log and capture clips properly from these cameras.
Assuming I do not want to make a rough cut of video in iMovie and prefer to begin my editing project in Final Cut Express (not doing XML export of iMovie project), I need to determine the best way to get clips captured via iMovie into Final Cut Express and determine if there is anything inferior in the iMovie captured clips that I need to be aware of. So far it appears that both iMovie and Final Cut Express reduce the 5.1 surround sound captured on the HDV miniDV tapes to stereo sound, which is not a big lose given the 5.1 sound was recorded from camera's built-in microphone, but it makes me wonder if the video is reduced in any way by the iMovie import process, examining the video in quicktime's inspector window the video appears to be the same in both iMovie and FCE, but I'll research the answers to these questions elsewhere on this forum and post additional questions if I do not find the information I need.

  • When I use iMovie 11 to capture HD video from my Handycam, there is a loss of quality that is very noticable when vewing on apple tv3.  What is the best way to get full HD video quality for home movies on apple tv?

  • App to record screen and capture video from camera at the same time?

For the love of God, why is it 2013 (the age of YouTube and such), and I can't find an app that lets me record my hdv camera (canon hv30) AND the computer screen at the same time? I make piano tutorials on YouTube and my current workflow is so horrendous that I havent even made a video in almost a year. What should take 30 minutes, takes 5 hours. Here is my current shi**y workflow.
    1. I use iMovie Hd to capture hdv camera
    2. I use QuickTime X to capture the screen (i record a virtual keyboard display that lights up the keys I am playing)
    3. I have to use a DAW to record the piano sound and my voice since iMovie hd doesnt have the ability to record audio from a separate source than the camera, for some **** reason. (opening up and setting up all three programs takes about 8 minutes)
    4. I press "record" on all three programs as quickly as possible to make syncing easier. (my videos are about 7 minutes long, so this part takes about 7 minutes)
    5. After I record all 3 things, I export the video from iMovie into a friendlier format to edit in another video editor since iMovie doesmt have the ability to overlay the screencap over another video (****). (25 minutes)
    6. I render the audio I recorded in the DAW into a wave file. (another 10 minutes)
    7. I import the camera footage, the screen cap, and the audio file into the video editing program. (another 5-10 minutes)
    8. I sync the audio and video clips since they were recorded separately (2 minutes)
    9. I do all the edits (add intro, cut unwanted footage etc) (10 minutes)
    10. I re-render the footage into a final video file. (about 30 minutes)
This is fu*****g ridiculous. There is no ONE program that does everything I need, just diferrent programs that have a feature I need, but is missing another. For example, a program called "screen flow" let's me record the screen, a camera, and an external audio source all at once, but for some frisking reason, it doesmt support "hdv" cameras (basically anything that records HD). Then, there are programs that record HD, but can't record the screen at the same time. This is only an issue since I am on a Mac, since apparently there are countless of programs that can do all the things I need at once (so I don't have to resync, and render things like 3 times each) and many of them are even free (such as xsplit) but they only work in Windows. For the love of God why? It's 2013 for christs sakes. It shoudnt take me 5 hours to make a 7 minute video. If it wasmt for this turn-off, I would have thousands of piano tutorials on yourtube already.
So my question. Is there an app that fixes my workflow and allows me to do all the things I need in one program? If there isn't such a program, why isn't there one?

maybe you have outgrown or just need to look at the "pro" applications instead.

  • How do I import HD video from my iphone 4 to PC??

I thought that it would be a simple process to transfer the nice HD video from my iphone 4 on to my computer...... apparently not!!
really whats the point in having a nice HD camera when you can only watch it on a tiny screen?!
If anyone knows of a simple straight forward way to do this without having to donate kidneys to Apple it would be very much appreciated =]

    God Bless You,
Its very simple, you can download pixelpipe to upload it straight from the phone, or just connect your iphone to your computer (if you have a mac, then go to iphoto, and the video should be there). I'm not sure how you would do it on a pc.

  • Cannot sync videos from iTunes to iPhone 5S

I recently got an iPhone 5S 32 GB.  I restored it through iTunes from a backup of my old iPhone 4S 16 GB.  Since the restore, & after an upgrade to iOS 8.0.2, I can no longer sync videos from iTunes 11.4.0.18 to the iPhone.  Previously I had been syncing a number of these videos to the 4S for years.
Here's what I've always done:  I simply connect the iPhone to my PC via a lightning cable.  Next I click on the "Movies" button at the top of the window.  Then I check the box to sync the movies that I wish to transfer.  Finally I hit "Apply."  The sync starts, but the movies never make it to the phone for some reason.
When I click on "Movies" under the iPhone on the left side of the screen, I see a listing of the movies that should have synced.  They are listed there, but they are kind of greyed out, & they have a dotted circle beside them.  This is very puzzling because I have over 17 GB of free space on the phone.  I can also confirm that the files are on my hard drive in the location shown when I right-click & hit "Get Info."  I can also successfully sync the very same videos with my iPad mini.
Does anyone have any suggestions?  Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

UPDATE:  I backed up my phone, wiped it (Settings -> General -> Reset -> Erase All Content and Settings), & then restored it through iTunes.  For whatever reason, that seems to have fixed the problem.  Movies now sync to my phone like they used to.
That process seems to have corrected 1 or 2 other minor issues, including one where iTunes was 'syncing artwork' for a long time on every sync.

  • Does anyone know how to delete Videos from an iPhone 5? iphoto won't do it and the phone provides no option.

    Hi,
I keep running out of space on my iphone 5 because there is a bunch of video content on there that I can't get rid of. I imported these videos into iPhoto sometime ago, however I think I probably didn't select to delete them once imported at the time. I've deleted all of the images and vids from the camera roll section however, but the videos are still on the phone under "Videos" where I can view them and select them, but it gives no option to delete them.
It would be great to know if there's a work around that doesn't involve restoring the device.
    Kind Regards,
    Claire

If you synched these videos from your computer the only way to delete them is to sync again with the videos unselected in iTunes.
