Unstable BIOS P965 Plat. v1.3

Hi, does anyone else experience bluescreens and  in window when overclocking the new BIOS?
Before updating, I could boot with 370MHz FSB, no problem. Now I get bluescreen when loading Windows XP, or if I'm lucky, the bluescreen does't come before after the desktop shows.
RAM runs at 5-5-5-15 and with divider 1:1 and at 2,3v.; I don't see why it should fail. My RAM is tested to run 4-4-4-12 @ 800MHz and with upto 2,3V before breaking the guarante. Even at 334Mz the RAM fails MemTest (windows version). And at 334MHz the memory only run at 668MHz.
It was this way with the old BIOS too, just so you don't think that is exlusive to version 1.3.
Would like some experiences from others who have updated to BIOS v1,3 on MSI P965 Platinum.
And perhaps some moderators or others with insight in what the BIOS should do better than the last could give me a feedback?

I would recommend using the v1.2 BIOS which is by far more stable than the 1.3 one.
They just added the new microcode and that's it.
Also, if you're unstable during OC, I would highly recommend attaching a FAN to the NB,  in my experience, when I did that, I could attain rock solid 333 on a E6600 at 3Ghz whereas without the fan, it was 3 seconds FAIL in Prime.
Also, for 333 and on, you HAVE to set the NB voltage to 1.51
with that setting you MUST use a FAN to dissipate heat otherwise it will be unstable.
One more reason to buy a motherboard with heatpipe technology,  far better than traditional cooling.

  • NB Temps on p965 Plat

What is the normal temp. for the Northbridge on the p965 plat ? Speedfan shows me one Temp 3 (AUX on some other boards) with impressive 110 C with or without overclocking the chipset. Is that the NB temp ? (and if it is, can i try to boil some eggs on it  )

It is hot indeed but as i can touch it it must be around 60C. For SpeedFan, i think i have the latest version. I just don't have any devices which can measure the temp on the heatsink, unfortunately. I just wonder if i need to add a cooler, because i overclock the system. The heatsink have a strange form and a metal plate right in the middle of it which maybe is going to block some of the airflow. But a cooler will move the air for sure.

  • AMI BIOS 1.7 Fails to Update P965 Plat

Man, I realize I may be talking about things people have already asked, but the search gave me a couple hundred answers that had nothing to do with my problem.
I downloaded the 1.7 BIOS update from http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=bios&maincat_no=1&prod_no=266.
I created a floppy and it failed. I double clicked the exe file and pressed P to program main bios image, it just causes the DOS screen to disappear. I looked at the "How to Flash BIOS" word file and I think it has been interpreted many times since much of it makes no sense to me.
How do I get the BIOS to update?

Yes, the MSI USB Flasher works wonders for BIOS flashing .

  • Weird problem getting P965 Plat to post

So I recently inherited a pc from a friend that decided to move across the country... He said it's never worked after he put it together and he believed the mobo was to blame.  So I do some bench testing with just cpu, video card and memory... and always no video, no beeps, and D-bracket always halts at Processor initialization (R,G,G,R).
Then I discover that if I turn the psu off then on really quickly and then power on right after... it boots up fine.  Minus the fact my ps/2 keyboard isn't reecoognized... but I read that is a common problem?  So I'm hunting down a usb keyboard to try.  But what could be causing the pc to only start up after a quick power supply reset?

  • Strange problems with video with new P965 Plat

I just put together a new machine and I'm stumped by a video problem I'm having. I *think* its any graphics using hardware acceleration.
Specifically: Menu fade-in, windows' built-in 3d screen savers, and games. These all seem to be running in single-digit FPS, games unaffected by resolution, AA, etc. Other oddities: in BIOS menu, the animated gradient bar at the top which moves very slowly, and bios is slow to respond to the keyboard (using a usb keyboard); Windows setup from CD runs VERY slowly; Windows boot up logo fades in VERY slowly (dragging down the whole boot up process) but once the loading bar starts to move the process is very quick.
Here's the kicker: It all runs great otherwise. Games install and start up fast, at high settings image quality is superb (but slow no matter what), web browsing is quick, etc.  I tried a different video card (ATI branded x1950pro instead of Diamond branded same model) and the problem persists, although Windows installed much faster.
I've tried all recent Catalyst drivers (and .net 2.0), have DirectX 9c, have the latest chipset drivers from Intel.  Is the motherboard having pci-e problems? This all continues despite several clean XP installs.  Also, installing .inf drivers from the MSI-included CD kills USB, although Intel's drivers online work.

Well, after putting on more than the token amount of thermal paste that was originally there, CoreTemp reports that while running Orthos the temp holds at 56C.  CPU-Z, which is the only program to correctly report 266x8=2.13ghz, shows no throttling.  Nor does it throttle when those previously mentioned games are running, or even the simple little things like screen savers.  These are not problems of marginally slower performance than I would like, it's a problem of certain applications running unusably slow.
    Ok. Temps are normal now.
Hmm I think you said that you used intel's chipset drivers?
I'm my self running e6400 with msi 965 neo-f using MSI's drivers. I also have MSI x1950pro, which is currently running on MSI's modified drivers, tho Ati's seemed to work ok too. I changed them for some no use debugging when trying to figure out my sluggis gfx (pci slot2 + Jmicron problem).
I also found out that installing MSI's usb driver, kills the usb ports. (aye I also have usb keyb & mouse). So i just hit reboot button after they were installed. Next time windows booted up usb worked. If I had know this, I would have gone power saving settings in windows, and enabled shutdown, if powerbutton is pressed. Tho Windows didn't broke because of one crash start, its used to it
If changing chipset drivers from intels to msi's don't help I dunno what to try.
    Oh BIOS.
I had bios 1.5 in this board when I bought it, after that I have been updating BIOS with newest beta right after they release one. I'm now using 1.6B15, as there was some thread on forums that released 1.6 version of BIOS had some problems.
But as I said earlier, I have only encountered sluggis gfx, if I'm using some PCI card in slot2 and Jmicron is enabled. My BIOS patching is due to scsi controller problems not gfx so dunno if it will help at all.

  • Oveclocking E6420 on P965 Platinum - interesting !

    Hi all
I am trying to overclock my 6420 with the P965 Plat bios 1.4 also using Corsair twin2x2048 6400CL5 (5 5 5 12 on 1.9v). Strange things are happening  I can get the system stable at 2.8Ghz with 1.4+v on core and impressive 1050mhz on my ddr working on 2:3 with 800 and 2.15v. System is also stable at 2.76ghz and 1035mhz ram at 2.1v. The most interesting thing is when i put the ram to 1:1 533 in the bios. Everything is getting unstable, i can boot and run windows but for some time only. Playing with timings and voltages doesn't make it better. Where is the point, if the FSB is set to 355 - 2.8ghz the Ram is set to 700mhz let's say we give it more energy at 2.1v and low timings at 5 5 5 15. Isn't that be more stable than running it with 1035 on 2.1v ?
As i can tell for me, the FSB is ok and the CPU will boot without problems at 3.0ghz and it did, windows and on, but the memory is totally unstable. Changing the voltages on it and/or on the northbridge isn't moving me forward.
If i get the new beta bios 1.5b3 or something like that will it get any stable with DDR set to 533 ? My point is not to toast my memory but to get to the unseeing 3.0ghz

    ok here are the numbers:
    for DDR 533:
    Memory Frequency
    < Timings >
    .   CAS# Latency (tCL)   4
    .   RAS# to CAS# Read Delay   4
    .   RAS# to CAS# Write Delay   4
    .   RAS# Precharge (tRP)   4
    .   Precharge Delay (tRAS)   13
    < SubTimings >
.   All Precharge to Activate   4
.   Refresh Cycle Time (tRFC)   28
    .   CS# to MCH-ODT Latency   2
.   Write to Precharge Delayed   11
.   Write to Read Delayed (tWTR)   9
.   Act to Act Delayed (tRRD)   2
    .   Read to Write Delay (tRD_WR)   8
.   Read to Precharge (tRTP)   4
.   All Precharge to Refresh delay   4
        529.8 MHz (4.0-4-4-13)
    as i put the timmings on 5 5 5 15 in the bios i get that CS# to MCH-ODT Latency   Res (0).
CPU-Z tells me that my ram can work on 533 with 4 4 4 13.
    for DDR 800:
    Memory Frequency
    < Timings >
    .   CAS# Latency (tCL)   3 (it's 5 but the bios shows 3 also in CPU-Z)
    .   RAS# to CAS# Read Delay   5
    .   RAS# to CAS# Write Delay   5
    .   RAS# Precharge (tRP)   5
    .   Precharge Delay (tRAS)   15
    < SubTimings >
.   All Precharge to Activate   5
.   Refresh Cycle Time (tRFC)   42
    .   CS# to MCH-ODT Latency   3
.   Write to Precharge Delayed   14
.   Write to Read Delayed (tWTR)  11
.   Act to Act Delayed (tRRD)   3
    .   Read to Write Delay (tRD_WR)   8
.   Read to Precharge (tRTP)   5
.   All Precharge to Refresh delay   5
        1035 MHz (5.0-5-5-15)
the command rate for DDR 533 is 1T and for 800 is 2T, but as i see i cannot change thouse

  • P965 Platinum and XP hell - found a way

    Hi guys,
I had ugly startup problems with the P965 Platinum and a Samsung Spinpoint SATAII HDD. So I want to share with you how I finally got there. I tried for a whole day to install XP as I wanted a dual boot with Vista. Trying XP Home OEM did not work, I got those blue screens we have seen in here. I tried everything, but to no avail. Two short beeps during startup also confused me, but forget about those for now. Well after hours of frustration I installed Vista. It worked! And told me that my Corsair RAM was probably OK, as well as my HDD. Then I had a drink too much and went to bed.
Today I slipstreamed XP with Service Pack 2, and managed to make a bootable CD. So now I got XP Home SP2. Tried again, and this time I got past blue screens...but when XP came to the first reboot...arghh no HDD. Today I was actually going to RMA the whole crap, but got a tip from the vendor.
On the MSI driver CD there is a IDE folder, with a "floppy" containing the AHCI ICH8 drivers. I read the readme and moved the files to a floppy, then put the floppy into the drive. Then I went into the BIOS and set SATA to AHCI. Started the install, pressed F6 and loaded the drivers from the floppy. I selected ICH8 AHCI, and XP was happy. During the installation it read the floppy once more and obviously recognized stuff. So here I am, up and running. Rock steady.
I think both MSI and vendors should inform us better about such.
I still got those two short beeps at startup, three if the USB CDRom is on. Can anyone please explain those beeps to me?
    Cheers,

Glad you found your way out of "hell".  The problems that threw themselves in your way are well known to many P965 Plat. users in this forum. It is good to see that you were able to solve them.

Usually it is one beep for each USB-device attached.

  • P965 Platimum shut down for 2 sec before booting

    Hi hi,
    I noticed a strange problem...
My P965 Plat board will shut down for 2 - 3 sec before booting up window. Meaning, when you pressed the power button to start the PC, the fan will turn for 1 sec then everything stop for awhile and after 2 sec everything back to normal to boot the window.
Have anyone encounted this problem before. Apart from this everything is ok after the boot up.
    My build is:
    C2D E6400
    P965 Platimum
    2 GB 667Mhz RAM
    250 GB of HDD
    XpertVision 7600GS DDR3
    Artic cooler pro 7

I would like to know what is going on with this problem
Yesterday i assembled my new system
    P965 Platinum
    e6600
    2 GB 800
    2 HDD
    1 DVDRW
    7600gt
    1 floppy
    PSU HEC Windmill 385 18A/12V
When i switched on the system i noticed this peculiar behavior and then when the boot screen came up my floppy got fire.(we are talking a lot of smoke and the wire sheathing got melted for about 10cm from the floppy.
I have a suspicion that the floppy short circuited because the pin somehow managed to clip incorrectly although i am not sure because i have done it about 1 million times ( i am a technician and i have assembled a zillion machines) ,probably the floppy input has broken and the floppy power pin slipped.
I very much concerned if this is a grounding issue
I have checked the system afterwards with the same PSU and as far M/B CPU and memory seems to be OK (At least i got into BIOS and they seem to be in place .......one strange thing 800 MHZ ram (4-4-4-12) where shown in Cell menu as 533 MHZ does this mobo has detection problems ????????) ...but the strange switching on-off was there...
If there are groundings issues could these related to the fact that i have used for the first time plastic washer on the screws that screw on the standoffs
    I am going to purchase a new 400W enermax liberty ( 12 V1 ->20a , 12 V2 -> 20A ,Combined 30A....my wife is going to kill me.....   )
But if grounding is the issue i have to be certain that it wont kill something more expensive....:(
i am going to try to remove the washers but if this fail i don't know what i would do.....

  • Need Help ASAP! 3200+/K8N Plat. Voltage problem

    Hi,
I have been having alot of problems lately with my mobo (K8N Neo Platinum & AMD64 3200 + Newcastle) with skipping in games and low benchmark scores.
I opened up PC Alert 4 to find the alarm going off and a problem highlighted in my voltages
What do i need to do to fix this problem?
    PC Specs:
    Athlon 64 3200+ Newcastle
1 GB OCZ PC3500 Performance Series DDR Ram
MSI K8N Neo Platinum nForce 3 250 motherboard
    BFG 6800OC Video card
    IBM 7200 RPM Harddrive
    470w Enermax NoiseTaker Series PSU
    Lian-Li PC-65 Case

I have posted countless times on this but feck it, here goes lol.
You have the same awesome card as me Phourstar or at least I think you have, in your signature it doesn't say if your card is a GT or an Ultra.
If it is an ultra then check the BIOS on the card (is in the 6800 Ultra when gfx options opened at the top). The 6800 Ultra (and some GT's) have been sent out with unstable BIOS's from a lot of different companies, do a google search and you will find a lot of people experiencing the same problem as you.
There are a number of BIOS's avalaible for the 6800 Ultra and I tried quite a few trying to fix this problem but the only one that works without any problems is this one:
    http://whitebunny.demon.nl/download?file=vid_bios_nvidia_gf6800ultra_5.40.02.10.15.zip
You also need to get nvflash (free program).
You can try altering your clock speeds, basically if the 3D and 2D speeds are set the same it makes the card A LOT more stable (they are almost the same speed anyway, normally only 25mhz difference, can overclock or underclock to make them the same I recommend overclock).
This helped my stability a lot but didn't cure the problem. Since downloading the above BIOS though my card has been running 100% stable.
If your card is a GT... I have heard there are GT BIOS's available so have a look around.

  • Use old HD with new P965 Platinum MB. Possible?

If I wanted to use my present HD with my new P965 Plat board, I have to boot with the OS CD and do a "repair" or a "install", or is this even possible?  Has anyone tried/done it?  Thanks.

Your "old HD" is P-ATA (IDE), right?
Theoretically it should not be a problem, if there is still room for a second drive on the JMicron IDE-port.
However, you should install a fresh XP SP2 onto that drive using JMicron Drivers (F6).  Just "reparing" the existing installation might not work properly.

  • MSI P35 Realtek HD sound driver not working

I am unable to reinstall the driver nor uninstall it.. The nividia VGA GTS 8800 works great and the LAN works, except HD Audio not working.
Good thing I got creative sound card and 1 available PCI slot to install it..

O my P965 Plat I could not install a new version of the driver nor uninstall the old version. Never figured out why but I keep restoring images getting progressively older and found one I was able to uninstall the old driver and then install the new driver.

  • MS 8878 :: GeForce 4 MX 440 SE-T :: new TV Out issue

    Hello everybody
    Config :
    - GF4 MX 440 SE-T ( MS-8878 )
    - Win2K
    - NVidia drivers 41.09
    - PAL TV
My TV-out works really fine for all video players through the nView system. Though I noticed a disturbing problem : my image is flattened...
For the purpose of the explanation, consider that I set the video output scale so that the image fits corrrectly on left and right part of the TV
Then, whatever the resolution & region settings I may use, and whatever the 4:3 video I may play, I still have 2 black bands on top and on bottom on the image, that eat like 10% of the total display surface.
I played 4:3 format videos for the test. I do not speak of the 2 black bands used for 16:9  :D
it is not a problem of overscan, as it does not happen on the left and right size. It is also clear that the image is flattened when I compare monitor and TV display
If I scale the display image through nView advanced parameters to 100%, my image is well displayed vertically ( top and bottom of image reach the top and bottom of the TV ) but the image is clearly cut on the left and right side.
this is tipically a problem of non-uniform scale
As the nView settings does not allow a non-uniform scale to compensate, I 'm sort of sticked with a strange TV display.
is there a way to correct that? a switch on the card?
    Thanks for any help

After installation I noticed windows didn't recognize the IDE player. I checked the bios and it wouldn't show up there either.
Then I inserted two of my IDE harddrives (320GB Maxtor and 120GB Maxtor) and they wouldn't show up on the bios or in windows either.
This all happened 1 week ago.
Today I booted my pc to find out it didn't have any internet/network connection so I thought my housemates did something with the router but soon I found out my pc was the problem. Reinstalled windows to check if it was a driver issue. Nothing helped so now my IDE controller and LAN controller both seem to be broken.
Would this be possible because of an unstable bios version or is my motherboard dying slowly?
    Thanks in advance for reactions.

I highly doubt another IDE drive would work, it's worth a shot though. Might try it tonight when I get home.
About the LAN driver: I installed Windows XP Pro twice, installed all drivers and the hardware manager wasn't showing any unknown hardware. So I guess it's safe to say it wasn't a driver issue since it just stopped working after a week and I didn't change the software or hardware setup in any way.

  • E6600 not supported?

    mobo: p965 platinum
    cpu: Core 2 Duo E6600
    mem: 1gb DDR2-800
well, finally able to boot but this is the message I get
"A 266 mhz system bus processor is installed. This proccesor is not supported on this system board, and will run at reduced processor clock speed. System performance will be impacted.
Do you wish to conitnue to boot at 133 mhz system bus an reduces processor speed? (Y/N)
Press [Y] to continue or press [N] to shutdown"
Does anyone know why this message is displayed?
In Bios is shows that it's running at 266MHz*9 (or something like that). Do I need to update my bios?
    Any suggestions are appreciated.
    thx
    UPDATE:
I managed to find some info from msi.com.tw... So maybe I do need to update the bios
    Supported CPU's:
    Conroe E6600 (2.4GHz)
Mainboard Model MSI   Model PCB        Ver.    Since BIOS
      P965 Platinum       MS-7238       1.1       7238v12.zip

    > You might've already killed something on the mainboard with the short you made as described in your other post.
    > clear CMOS first. This is really a strnage message hehe...
This is actually what I had to do to make it boot at all. I think it actually was not a shorting issue, I though so, but the cabling was correct etc and after removing the mobo from the case, clearing CMOS was the thing that made it to boot.
    > I think you only need to connect JPWR2. Test it out.
Will try this when I get home.
    > Check if you have connected the power cables in the right direction. Witch slot are you using for the memory?
It's in slot 1 of Channel A. I've also tried slot 1 of Channel B like some one suggested in some other thread but it did not help. But I'll try all the slots. But I doubt it is a memory issue, mem is recognized just fine by BIOS and I am able to boot the computer, update BIOS etc. The D-Bracket's all leds are green which should mean no problems were found and it tries to boot OS (no HDD's / optical drives installed at the moment so it only tries to read the floppy drive).
I'm just downloading LiveLinux-CD (SLAX) to test if it works like it should. Hopefully it does and I am able to get the network up and running so I don't need to come to my parents place or school to find more information.
well, maybe I just send an request to MSI's support and see what they will have to say about this problem.
thx for the suggestions, will try those
