Unstable remote access to extreme external hard drive

Why can't I reliably access a usb hard drive plugged in the back of my airport extreme over the internet?
I've bought a new dsl modem (Netgear). I've upgraded to a static ip. This helped for a while. But as far as I can tell, after I access the usb hard drive via wireless at home it seems to break the ability to connect to the same network remotely. The extreme and network name show up in the left pane of the finder window, but it will not connect. The Extreme is in bridge mode; the hard drive is a WD but NOT formatted as a mac journaled format. I have tried also tried a powered usb port. Does not make a difference.
I have the latest airport extreme, and running the latest Maverics on a 6 month old MacBook Pro. What is happening? What am I doing wrong? I've had this problem for months.

6) I'm not following this. Looking at my modem, it is set to ppoe (has to be); modem is set in modem & router mode; ip address and DNS are set for "get automatically from ISP; LAN port set with DHCP ON; and interestingly, two different ip addresses (0.2 and 0.5) for devices with the name of my network as the device--and both of these have the same MAC address.
Bridge the adsl modem.. instead of using it as modem router, use it as modem only.
Look up instructions for your exact model modem on how to bridge.. Of all the companies Netgear can be the most difficult and occasionally impossible to bridge. But you should try.. or borrow a simple modem that can be easily bridged.
In the AE, setup the WAN, instead of dhcp use PPPOE, and put your username and password for ISP there.
This puts the AE as the main router of the network.. and puts the public IP on its WAN interface.. this can be extremely helpful when you have access issues.
5) I don't know how to locate the port I am using.
You should specific the port in the setup.
See the Tesserax doco on remote access using port forwarding.
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3413
In the document he shows how to setup using 8888 which is port translated to 548.. much better for security than opening known AFP port to the world.

  • When connected to NETGEAR WNR1000, I can't remotely access Airport Extreme attached hard drive.

I have a hard drive connected to my Airport Extreme at home and I am staying at a friend's place where I am connecting to the Internet via a NETGEAR WNR1000 router (which is routing a broadband-cable connection from Comcast Xfinity).
When I am connected directly to the cable modem, the Airport Extreme's drives shows up in my Finder but when I'm connected via the NETGEAR router it doesn't show up.
There must be some setting in the NETGEAR router that is blocking access but I've not got clue one what setting I need to adjust or change on the router.
    Could someone please advise me?

I checked the NETGEAR router settings and it was not configured to block any services or sites. I did as you advised and set up Port Mapping/Forwarding from 548 to the IP assigned to my Mac but nothing showed up in the Finder (no Shared Devices etc).
I then connected directly to the cable modem via ethernet and Shared Devices showed up in my Finder window with my Airport Extreme. I connected to one of the drives connected to the AEBSn, then unplugged the ethernet and connected the NETGEAR back to the cable modem and thus my MacBook Pro was connected via WiFi to the NETGEAR router and to the Internet.
Shared Devices disappeared from my Finder window, BUT the HD I had connected to remained connected. It was listed under my MacBook Pro's name (3rd item after the local HD, "Network"). The icon is a blue and white drive with the WiFi logo on it.
I verified that I could access the files on this remotely connected drive and did a Get Info and in the window that popped up it said "Server: afp://MilkBar._afpovertcp._tcp.malckwan.members.mac.com/Untitled%2001".
I tried to use the Connect To (Cmd-K) to connect to another drive attached to the AEBSn (Untitled%2002) using the same formatted address but could not connect.
PS. I did verify that I was mapping Port 548 to the current IP assigned to the MacBook Pro.

  • How do i deny access to an External Hard Drive while using user switching

    Hello,
I have a QuickSilver running Tiger (Leopard upgrade coming when RAM arrives) and have 4 users ( fast user switching enabled). I would like to deny all access to the external hard drives except for the my account on the box.
I have already have gone into the info Sharing & Permissions and only allowed myself to have access, others have "no access" however when I switch user (using fast user switching) they assume ownership of the drives and have access.
Just so you understand the overall direction I would like to go. I'm a photographer and my images are loaded on various external hard drives which is plugged in to the desktop. Family uses the desktop and do not want them to access my work on the external hard drive, however I do need to connect via my laptop to edit images via ethernet which I would obviously enter the admin username and password for the desktop when challenged.
    Any ideas???
    dsh
P.S. I also changed the permissions via unix to 700 but guess what it doesn't matter! It still assumed the other users ownership upon switch. Does anyone have a proven solution?

how does one "chmod the root user of the drive to your admin account"?
can that be done with terminal inside an administrator account, or does root need to be enabled and logged into?

  • How do you set a security password to control access to an external hard drive?

how do you set a security password to control access to an external hard drive?

The only way to reliably protect data, especially on an external hard drive, is to encrypt it.  Permissions don't have to be respected.  One way to encrypt data is to create an encrypted sparse bundle disk image with Disk Utility.  See:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1578
(Be sure to use the 256-bit encryption.)
Alternately, you could use some whole-disk encryption, though I have no experience with any of the software for doing that.  You could try the following:
    http://www.truecrypt.org/
I don't know that I would recommend the product being advertised inappropriately by keynesis.

Ok - for a while there, the hard drive would not come up on the desktop - but now on a re-boot of the compter, or if I disconnect the hard drive and re-connect it, a message comes up with three buttons which say:

  • Remote accesss to AEBS external hard drive connected to BTHH 3.0

    Hi,
I am trying to enable remote access over internet to a USB hard drive I have connected to my Airport Extreme...and I am having a few difficulties.
My broadband is from BT and I use a BT Home Hub (3) as the router in my lounge. The wireless range of the HH didnt reach the other end of my house so I have my Airport Extreme placed in the far end of the house connected to the HH through an ethernet connection (it's throgh a powerline adapter but i think this should be the same as if it were just a very long ethernet cabler). BTHH doesnt allow network extension (I dont think) so Airport Extreme creates a second network in our house. This set up is fine as devices just switch between the 2 networks depending on where you are in the house. I then plugged in a USB external hard drive to the Airport Extreme so I could access all my music whilst connected locally to the Apple Extreme's network. This also worked nicely but now I would like to access the media on the external hard drive remotely. I have seen a number of articles explaining how to set this up in Airport Utility 5.6 but wonder how/if this is affected by having the BT HH 3 involved so that the Airport Extreme isn't acting as a router (at least I think not)? Do I need to play about with port forwarding on the BT HH as well or can I just effectively ignore that it is there and play about with the port forwarding on the Airport Extreme as per the various articles out there?
I'd ideally like to remotely access the hard drive with mac, Windows and ipad...maybe one step at a time though.
Many thanks for any help! Happy to clarify any of this if my explaination is as cleart as mud!

Basically, you will need to configure the BTHH to open the necessary ports to access the AirPort Disk attached to the AirPort Extreme. That is because, the Extreme should be in bridge mode in this network configuration and performing as a NAS server.

  • Time Capsule or AirPort Extreme + External Hard Drive for iTunes Library

Hi, I currently have an Airport Extreme (Gigabit) and am planning on getting a MacBook Pro. What I want to do is keep my iTunes Library on an External Hard Drive and attach it to my AirPort so I can access it anywhere in the house (and world). Now I have been reading various reviews that perhaps a Time Capsule would be better for my needs. I don't plan on using it for Time Machine backups right now, just as a NAS Drive. If anyone has any experience with this I would appreciate the advice.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
I have something like that working at the moment. My setup is based on a Mac Mini Core Duo [ OS 10.5.6 ] connected to a Time Capsule. I have configured iTunes to store all archived music on the Time Capsule. I use the Apple Lossless format for my CDs and approx 420 titles have taken approx 130Gb from my 1Tb Capsule. In general this setup works well [ especially the optical out of the Mac ] but be aware of the following potential pitfalls:-
    1. The Time Capsule is a little on the noisy side and depending on the quality of your playback equipment, your choice of music, ambient noise and your values of "satisfactory" you may want to put your Capsule or HDD in another room. This seems OK for generic playback, but in my experience wireless is not a good way to go for streaming content.
    2. iTunes v8.0.2 has a preferences capability to allow you to redirect it's archive to the Time Capsule. However, even if you leave the Capsule switched on it goes into a "sleep" mode. Rip a new CD and iTunes won't tell you this; instead it will silently reconfigure itself to store on your local hard drive and then you're left with the challenge of moving your collection piecemeal if you want it in one location, followed by manually updating iTunes to "point" it to the new location of the music.
One nice thing about the Capsule is that it does allow other connection types. I have mine networked to a PC running Ubuntu Linux and a music player called Amarok and I am able to stream the Mac-Ripped lossless files and play them over Linux perfectly... Works very well. Apparently you can do this with a Windows client and iTunes for Windows, but I don't run Windows as a matter of principle and can't validate that.
My 1Tb Time Capsule runs hot, too. Not dangerously so, but hot to the touch. There are no cooling fans, but you might want to think about placement; it needs plenty of fresh air circulating around it.
For what it's worth [ and I appreciate this is going beyond your question ] I also wanted my setup to be able to store and retrieve recorded TV. I have Elgato EyeTV and a USB Freeview decoder. I quickly learned that despite claims to the contrary the performance of the wireless connection just isn't up to streaming video content. So I went out and purchased a pair of Ethernet-over-mains adapters from Zyxel that are absolutely perfect for the job.
Yes, the Capsule is a little pricey for what is little more than a Hard Drive in a box, but it does work very well.
Beware the timeout disconnections and the silently re-configuring iTunes thought...

  • I want to put my iTunes library on an external hard drive but leave my favourite songs on the computer to access without the external hard drive and when using iMovie. Is there a way to do this?

I have filled my hard drive, half with music, half with photos. I want to take my music off, and put it onto an external hard drive. However, I would still like to have access to favourite songs and playlists when the external hard drive isn't plugged in. I would also like to access this music to use with iMovie. Is there a way to do this?

You will have to engage a split library which means you will have to start answering questions on this forum because you will need to learn a lot about how iTunes works in order not that have a big mess at the end of it all.  It also won't be easy when the time comes to relocate it all to different drives.
You can go to advanced preferences and turn off organize media and copy to items to media folder when adding items to library.  Next read about how to selectively consolidate items to the external drive.

"...selected the new tracks directly in iTunes, Control-clicked on the selection, and saw that now you can consolidate selected items." - http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20090919000326840
Remember that when you start iTunes without the external drive turned on iTunes will present you with a bunch of broken links.  If you have automatic downloads enabled with iCloud you may have to turn that off to prevent iTunes from repopulating your drive trying to deal with those "missing" tracks.
If you add tracks in bunches to iTunes and want them to go to different media folders you will need to either add them by holding down the option key while dragging if the desired media folder is not the one set in preferences, or by changing the media folder in preferences.  Changing media folder preferences only applies to new files added, not old ones.
Okay, I am going to stop typing because you might just reply to me, "Oh, okay, forget it," and I don't need the exercise.

  • No longer able to access data on external hard drive via smb or cifs

    Hi there,
I connected my external hard drive (Maxtor One-TouchII-01) via USB to my router (It's a German Fritz!Box).
Before the update to Mavericks I established the conncetion using the command "smb://...". The HD is formatted as FAT32, because I need to connect to the HD from my workplace, where there are only Windows PCs.
After updating to Mavericks I can't read the data stored on the external HD any more. I still can connect to the HD with the same smb-command line, however, read-access to the folders on the HD is denied, because I don't have sufficient rights to view the content. So far I haven't been able to change this. The  folder "properties" are set to "you have restricted access" (I don't know the exact words of the message in English as I translated it from German).
The strange thing is, my synch-tool can sitll read and write data on the external HD as soon as I have established the connection.
I already tried to connect to the HD using the root user, but it didn't work either. There still is this small red "no entry" sign on the folder icon.
Trying to connect via the protocol "cifs" causes the same problem.
Another thing I don't understand is that since the update I can't use the former name of my HD with the smb-command  which was "smb://fritz!nas". Now it only works with "smb://fritz.box". Maybe this has something do with the problem?
I'd appreciate any kind of help, because after searching the internet for months I still haven't found a solution.
    Thank you very much
    canella

Excellent, well done. I have to say that talktalk were useless, they repeatedly sent me instructions for setting up an emil account and did not seem able to understand that it was the login that would not work. Thank you.

  • I can not access everything on External Hard drive

I switched from PC to MAC and am using an external hard drive to do Time Machine back ups.  I used the hard drive to store pics and other files before on PC, and now that I have used to to store backups can no longer access my other files.
Question: How can I access the other files?
    OR
How can I turn off the time machine backups on this disc (or tell the external drive it is not the back up anymore) so I can get to my pictures?  I think once I do this, I could partitian the drive and use for both... No?

In Disk Utility, you should see an icon in the drive list representing the external drive. Below that is an icon for each volume on the drive. One of those is the Time Machine backup volume. If there are no others, then there is no other data on the drive, at least none that you can get to.

  • Access denied to external Hard Drive on Windows 7?

    Hey,
Thanks in Advance for your help. Yesterday I downloaded and installed Windows 7 (which looks like its going to be a massive improvement on Vista!!). Though I had a problem when I tried to open my external Hard drive (which is an Internal hard drive in an enclosure ":H"). An error message pops up every time I double click it saying that access to this drive is denied.
This used to happen when I would change from PC to PC but was able to fix it using instructions from this Link http://www.le.ac.uk/cc/dsss/docs/acls2.shtml
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Regards

    Folks,
I faced a similar problem when trying to move a NTFS formatted disk from XP to windows 7. I tried suggestions on various forums but nothing worked. Finally though, i was able to identify the root cause empirically and fix it.
    1. In my understanding, Windows 7 interprets the permissions on a NTFS drive very strictly. Hence while a NTFS HDD with tweaked security settings - say with only administrator access/ownership under security tab may work perfectly in XP, OS X, Ubuntu etc
, Win 7 will show you access denied unless permissions for ALL of the following: AuthenticatedUsers, SYSTEM, Administrator & Users is set correctly (which is default for a newly formatted drive in windows)
    2. You can do this either manually by adding these one by one or by simply formatting the drive (this however is destructive for data).
    3. I therefore simply set the permissions correctly AFTER taking ownership of the drive and I was able to access the drive just fine.
    4. To prove that its merely a permission issue where Windows 7 is arguabily behaving correctly, before making any permission changes, try booting your computer in Safe Mode and you should be able to access your data just fine while you are in the Safe Mode.
    5. Lesson for me was to be very careful with NTFS permissions, especially while removing those present by default.
    6. I managed to solve the issue before seeing this thread. Hence i do not know if "foreign drive" solution below would have worked in my case.
To Microsoft: This solution should be WAY more easier to find on the net. Hell, its shouldn't even be a be a problem! Windows should be able to reset the permissions to default with a single click on a non encrypted NTFS drive if the person trying to do this
    has the administrator access.
Hope this allows people to save time and data.
    Cheers!

You've posted in the Airport forum, so is it connected to An Apple Airport Extreme?  If so, directly or via a USB hub?  If so, is it powered? Does the drive have it's own power supply?
Or is it connected to an Apple Time Capsule? Or directly to your Mac?  Or something else (ie, what)?
    How is it formatted?
and i try to turn on time maching it turns it self off. I try to back up it says disk cannot be found or somthing like that.
What does it actually say?  If you're not sure, post a screenshot.
I tried selecting the disk but that doesnt work either.

This happened soon after the 10.7.2 update. I have a lot of files on this drive. Could it be the number of files that is causing the problem? Is there a Limit onnumber of folders on the surface of a drive? Please help if you can, I am desperate to preserve my software. But I need to do something soon, Or else I will have to just reformat the drive so I can use it again. I don't really want to do that.

I had the same problem but only after I upgraded to Lion. I could see the files on my external drive on other Macs using older software. It seems that Lion wasn't seeing old files on the external drive. So we accessed the files on a Mac using Snow Leopard, copied all the files into one new folder on the same external hard drive and now they're there on Lion. Problem solved! I hope this helps
