Unstable WPA connection with WRT54G 2.2 (firmware 4.30.5)

Hello everybody,
I'm experiencing some unstability in my wireless connection with my WRT54G router.
By the past, the router was working perfectly. Last week I've upgraded the firmware to the version 4.30.5. Since then I have to power off the router every morning to connect my Centrino laptop to it.
FYI, my router is a WRT54G model 2.2. I'm using Mixed Mode (B+G) + WPA2 Personal (TKIP+AES) with a Group Key Renewal = 3600 seconds. My router is using the wifi channel 4 and there is no other access point on this channel. On my laptop, I'm running a Windows XP SP2 with the latest system patches.
Please also note that my router is now identifying itself as a WRT54GL (in its web pages) and not just WRT54G. Not sure if it's an issue or not.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance,

You mean that on the setup page of the router its says WRT54GL instead of the actual model?
When you try to turn off your router are you still wilrelessly connected?

  • DNS lost connection with WRT54G

I have the following problem with my WRT54G v.8 router. Sometimes when I turn on on the computer I can not access the internet.  I am using a wireless connection using Vista. Running the diagnose and repair option in Vista it says there is not connection with DNS.  I make a ping to the router and it is ok, ping to the cable modem and it is ok, and obviously ping to DNS and they don´t answer.  After powering off and powering on the router I have again the internet connection.  After some days or sessions the problem repeats.  Maybe somebody have a solution for this kind of problem.

hi... try upgrading/reflashing firmware on the router, go to www.linksys.com/download and download the latest firmware for the router, after reflashing firmware on the router, reset the router back to factory default settings and logon to router's setup page, reconfigure it according to ISP settings, reduce MTU to 1458, go to wireless settings try changing wireless channel to 11, go to advanced wireless settings and reduce beacon interval to 50, fragmentation and RTS threshold to 2304...check whether it works or not...

  • Dropping Connection with WRT54GS v4

I have had a problem for the last week where my router drops connection intermittently about every 20-30 minutes.  Once it drops, I have to unplug the router and modem and start over.  It happens over and over again.  Hooking up directly to the modem results in a normal, trouble-free connection.  I have tried changing the channel, the SSID name and restarting everything sequentially without success.  Any ideas on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

i started getting this problem, or at least a similar one, lately. i have a WRT54GS v6 with the latest firmware (1.50.9) that randomly decides to stop allowing wireless connections. devices that are already connected will stay connected and be able to access the internet through it, but if you restart a computer or try to connect with other devices, it doesn't find the router.
i have changed the SSID and set it so it does not broadcast the SSID, but that shouldn't cause it to stop accepting connections. i usually only have my laptop and a couple wii's connected to the router (my own and 2 of my roommates).
the only way to fix it when this happens is to unplug the router and plug it back in.

  • Lost internet connection with WRT54G

Have had WRT54G router for a few years now and worked perfectly with a cable modem. Went on holiday for 2 weeks and switched the router and cable modem off. When I came back this week and turned them back on I can no longer connect to the internet from either of my laptops via wireless router. Can get local access from laptop to router but not to internet. Can connect OK from laptop to internet via cable modem direct. Have tried lots of things, including upgrading firmware, resetting automatic setup etc, but can't work out why it suddenly stopped working.
Any ideas or suggestions would be welcome.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Do not use easy setup.  You need a wired connection between your router and computer.  Log on to router using 192.168.1.1 in Internet Explorer.  Leave username blank and use admin for password.  You may have to clone your mac address.
Setup your wireless connection.  Change the network name from Linksys to something else.  Go to wireless security and setup wpa encryption. Write down the settings.  You will have to input these settings into your wireless connection.

  • Remote Desktop Connection with WRT54G from Novice

Well, I’m usually pretty good at using Google and forums to eventually figure out how to fix my problem but this one absolutely has me stumped and I’m hoping someone out there has an answer for me. For the record, I have probably a beginner/intermediate knowledge of computers so if you know the answer to my problem, try to explain it simply! ****TO ANYONE WHO TAKES THE TIME TO READ THIS THING AND CAN OFFER SOME ADVICE-THANK YOU!!!!***
    THE PROBLEM
I would like to be able to use Remote Desktop to log into either of my home computers from basically any computer on the internet.
    THE SETUP
I have two computers, whose names are LAPTOP and DESKTOP that are both running Windows Vista Ultimate. Both of the computers are connected to a Linksys WRt54G Router ; one wired, the other wirelessly. The Linksys router is then connected to a Westell DSL Modem that connects to AT&T’s internet service.
    SETTINGS
My DSL service only provides me with a dynamic IP address so I signed up with no-ip.com. Through that site, I bought a domain name and downloaded their small program that runs in the background of my desktop computer. The program checks what my IP address is every couple of seconds and if it changes, it notifies their server so that anyone who types in my domain name is directed to the new IP address.
    ROUTER (Firmware 4.20.6)
Basic Setup Page: The Router Name is just the model number, the Server Name is my DSL provider and the Domain Name is the name I chose and registered with No-IP.com. (www.mydomainname.com, for example.) DHCP Server is ENABLED. DDNS Service is DISABLED. Under Advanced  Routing, it is set in GATEWAY mode.
Security Page: Firewall Protection is ENABLED. Block Anonymous Internet Requests is NOT checked. Filter Multicast, Filter Internet NAT Redirection and Filter IDENT ARE checked.
Applications and Gaming Page: I chose two port numbers, one for each computer that I want to connect to. On the first line, I have Application: RDP, Port Range: 49200 to 49200, Protocol: Both, IP Address (The IP address of the computer I want to connect to) and the Enable box IS checked. [I did the same thing with the second line for the other computer, but with a different port number and that computer’s IP address)
Administration Page: Access Server is HTTP, Wireless Access Web is ENABLED, Remote Management is ENABLED through Port 8080, and UPnP is ENABLED.
    WINDOWS VISTA SETTINGS
First, I went to the Remote Desktop Settings of the target computer and ENABLED Remote Desktop Connection and allowed computers running any version of Windows. I also confirmed that the box labeled “Allow This Computer To Be Controlled Remotely” WAS checked. I then made sure that I had a user name, it had a password associated and that it had Administrator priveledges. I went back to the Remote Connections screen and added the user name as being allowed to connect. (I think this is redundant since it’s both the owner of the computer and has Administrator Status.)
Next, per Randomly Googled Internet Advice, I went into the registry and changed the port number that Remote Desktop listens for incoming connections to Port 49200 to match the router settings. [Registry Entry that I modified was: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\WinStations\RDP-Tcp]
Finally, I went to the Windows Firewall and Added (opened) port 49200 for use as a Remote Connection. I kept the protocol as TCP and confirmed the scope was set for Any Computer.
    CURRENT STATUS
If I go to Explorer and enter my IP address with a colon and the specify port 8080, I can get the login screen for the router. Same thing happens if I just enter my domain name and port 8080. However, if I switch the 8080 port and use one of the ports I chose (49200), it cannot connect, either using the Public IP address or the domain name. (I’m trying to connect using a wireless card and not connected to my local network so I know it’s the same as if I was anywhere else.)
I’m not sure why it won’t let me connect; it feels like the router will not allow the connection to pass through it to the port I’m asking it to forward to. I’m guessing someone out there who took the time to read it is shaking their head at all the information I provided and knows the one dumb thing I missed!
    Thanks again!

I'm attempting to do the same thing with my home network. the only differences are that i have cable internet from comcast and i'm running vista business. my router is the wrt54gs. i'm assuming that the web page is similar for adjustmants. To be honest i cannot figure out how to do a remote destop too. so i went to www.logmein.com and installed the program. once installed to to every computer you want to have access too and log into the website. then click on the add computer icom. full control app sharing etc... even better when you connect you have the option to deactivate the local host mouse and screen to prevent anyone seeing what your doing.
If you resolve the router issue would you let me know. plz thanks

Hi… You need to forward the port 1024 on this router and then try to access it again.

  • Very slow connection with WRT54GS.

It appeared out of nowhere 2 days ago... slow connection for websites, very high latency for online games to a point where it's unplayable... i tried to reset my router, change channel(i'm usually at channel 6), moving the antennas... nothing. when i reset, the speed is fine for a few minutes, but after a while it's back to slow connection. My router isn't even 1 year old yet and it's already broken? I can't believe that, there must be some solution. Anyone can help please?

The latest firmware is 1.02.0 if you have wrt54gs v6 & V5 if yout got v7 the latest firmware is 7.50.0
First step you need to check is your direct connection from the modem.
    1. hardwire your computer straight to the modem using a cat 5 ethernet cable, if your download speed and your internet connection is slow, the problem is with the modem or with your ISP so you need to call your ISP and double check your connection.
If your speed if fine straight to the modem then its with the router.
2.Hardwire your computer straight to the router if your speed is fine when its hardwired through the router, then the problem is with your wireless card or the wireless settings of the router.
In US the standard channel is 11,6 and 1. So play around with the channel. If its still doesnt work then access the setup page of your router click on the WIRELESS tab click on ADVANCE WIRELESS SETTINGS sub tab. set beacon interval to 50, RTS and Fragmentation Threshold to 2304.
After that turn off the modem the router and your computer for 1min. After a minute turn on the modem first after lights of your modem are steady, turn on the router and lastly turn on your computer, check your connection if its fine then its fixed if not call linksys tech support.
I hope this would help. Good Luck!

  • Slow wired connection with WRT54G

    My ISP is Comcast.
I'm using their modem which includes my digital voice connection. From there I'm wired straight to the WRT54G and from there I'm wired to my PC. However, when I connect from the Comcast modem to my PC I get download speeds of 12mbps and when I connect from the WRT54G (wired) it drops to 1mbps or even 786kbps.
I've tried resetting the modem and the router. I've tried changing the MTU. I have the latest firmware version (v8.0.2). The last resort is getting a new cable modem (suggested in the forums) but I think that's out of the question since my digital voice is connected to the Comcast modem.
Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Please state the make and exact model number of your modem (not the WRT54G).
Using an ethernet cable, wire your computer directly to the modem (not the WRT54G).  Verify that you have a properly working Internet connection.  Then do the following:
Go to "Start" > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
A black DOS box will appear. Type in "ipconfig /all" (with no quotes), then hit the Enter key.  Copy all the results to your next post, except that if your "IP address" does not start with 192, then post only the first 3 digits of your "IP address" along with the rest of the info.

  • Intermittent Connection with WRT54G

Hi, I'm new here, so my apologies for any redundancy / lack of techno-savvy.
I have had my two home computers hooked up to the internet (ethernet) via a WRT54G v.8 router for a couple of months now. It worked well for about a week before the wireless signal started disappearing and I'd have to re-set the whole network: at first every few days, and then a couple of times a day. I tried all the troubleshooting tips on this website: upgraded firmware, MAC address cloning, changing the channel, you name it. Finally the only thing that worked was disconnecting the wired connection from my desktop and making that computer wireless too, so I figured it must be some sort of problem caused by the computer's internet settings.
That worked for a month or so, but now I'm having the same problem again. The wireless signal will just quit for no apparent reason. Sometimes if I wait (anywhere from 15 minutes to 2 hours) the signal will come back again with all the network settings intact. Another thing that *sometimes* works is resetting the router manually.
Anybody have any ideas about what's going on?
Oh, and the computers are a Toshiba satellite and an HP Pavilion.

    hi!
well, if you said that you have done everything that you need to do on the router like upgrade, reconfigure, change channels and everything.how bout the laptop?are they using the wireless utility for their built-in wireless adapter or the windows xp configuration.they sometimes will have conflict and if you use these laptops in connecting to other wifi area then when you get home, try removing the preferred networks and reconnect to your network.hope that will help you a bit.goodluck!

  • Can't Connect with WRT54G v 8.0 on Windows 7

    Hello -
Very frustrated user here, having multiple problems with this router. The SSID/name comes up in the list of available networks, all the settings are correct, and still it doesn't connect. Windows 7 troubleshooter is unable to identify the problem.
This also happened on my other XP laptop when I first connected it. I vaguely remember trying multiple things to no avail, but I think I was able to get it to connect after plugging it via ethernet into the router and running the setup program. However I do not still have the CD and the software is not available for download on the site anymore.
Also, I don't know if this helps, but my XP laptop, which still connects fine, will lose a connection when I leave it alone for too long. I will log back in from standby or hibernate and will have to reboot for it to reconnect - release/renew for example doesn't work, nor does anything else I try.
Are there known issues with this router? Or am I missing something? Help!

I would suggest you to upgrade/re-flash the firmware on your linksys router.
Go to website linksysbycisco.com/downloads.........insert model no of your router in search tab......select proper version of your router........download the firmware file......save that file on desktop
    Firmware Upgrade/Reflash
Follow these steps to upgrade the firmware on the device : -
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on a computer hard wired to the router...
In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1...Leave the Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
Click on the 'Administration' tab- Then click on the 'Firmware Upgrade' sub tab- Here click on 'Browse' and browse the .bin firmware file and click on "Upgrade"...
Wait for few seconds until it shows that "Upgrade is successful"  After the firmware upgrade, click on "Reboot" and you will be returned back to the same page OR it will say "Page cannot be displayed".
Then observe the connection and also you can try to connect to the wireless network on Win 7.

  • Wired PC loses connection with WRT54GS but wireless stays on.

Occasionally my wired PC connection through the WRT54GS stops. I power down the router and everything comes back OK after powering backup. The wireless signal continues to work even though the wired signal fails. Is there something I need to change to eliminate this problem? My firmware on the WRT54GS is 1.50.6.
    Thanks

I have the same problem only the wireless unit loses connectivity. Each by itself through the router works fine. Have narrowed it down to the fact that the two computers have different operating systems which causes trouble for the router. Have not found a fix yet though.

  • Loosing connection with WRT54G

I set up my router to the cable modem in Dec.  So far all has been well. In the past month, I kept getting a pop up to dial a modem. I set the connection to "never dial" and it stopped. Now everytime I turn on the pc's (I have 3 connected to the router) I have to unplug the power to the router to get it to reset. I loose the VPN connection on one and the other two have no internet connection until I reset the modem. After resetting, it works okay for a few hours sometimes, then I have to reset it again. The cable co. has been out several times and cloned the MAC address, reset a new MAC address, tested the cable signal strength and a bunch of other things but still no luck. I don't get why this started all of a sudden. The cable guy told me that possibly someone cloned my signal from my router to get on and when they're on it bumps me off. But after he reset the MAC address, it still does it. What gives?
On edit: I have the router hard wired with LAN cables instead of wireless if this helps.
Message Edited by rh455 on 03-29-200707:20 AM

    1. Connect your PC directly to the router via LAN cable port.
    DON'T try this via wireless...
    2. Unzip and place the .bin file on your desktop.
    3. Log on to your router's settings page and go to the Administration tab. Then select update firmware.
    3. Use the browse button and navigate to the .bin file on your desktop.
    4. Click update and then wait. DO NOT INTERUPT THE PROCESS. This can ruin the router.
I hope this helps, although, all of this information is in the Linksys faq.
    Good luck.
And yes, our provider was doing a lot of updating and causing us some outages. But the older firmware does not work properly if you are surrounded by lots of other networks. The new firmware fixes these issues.
PS check to see that the time is correct on your router in the status page. If it is not, your DST and TZ settings can mess up your router's WAN connectivity.Message Edited by ajtcl on 03-29-200708:20 PM

  • Problems getting a connection with WRT54G Ver. 8

Okay.. This may be a little long.
I had my router set up for about 2 years now. It worked fine up until 2 days ago. I have a WRT54G V8 router, with a Belkin wireless receiver for another desktop computer. I have tried using the 192.168.1.1 website to set up on my wireless computer to try and set up the IP address, but it does not seem to be working at all. The IP remains to be 0.0.0.0 and would not change after changing the MAC address, and using Release/Renew option. The desktop computer that the router is hooked up to doesn't even recognize 192.168.1.1 website into the browser. I have tried reconnecting the router, as well as the Broadband modem that we have and nothing seems to get the connection to my other desktop. Can anyone help me get my connection running again?  It would be greatly appreciate.

Your Modem should be connected to the Linksys Router on the Internet Port and then you need to connect your Computer to the Linksys Router on the LAN Port 1.... Then Connect the Power to the Router.... Check the Light Status (Power, WLAN, Port no.1 and Internet) all this lights should be Lid...

  • Cannot establish wireless connection with WRT54G after power-off

My WRT54G (firmware v7.00.0) is connected to cable TV modem and
usually the wireless connection works fine, but after swiching off and later
on the power to WRT54G a laptop cannot establish WiFi connection to internet.
I can see in Odyssey software (for wireless communication) that my laptop
found the right network (SSID) but in status it says 'waiting for keys'.
I use WPA2 (TKIP). The laptop does not connect to internet.
When I connect it by cable (ethernet) the internet works fine, I have noticed
that by accessing the web-page utility of the router and simply clicking
save changes on wireless-settings page (without making any changes in
the settings) my laptop instantly establishes wireles connection and
everything works fine till next power swich-off.

Thanks for reply! I have my network in preffered, and the software/laptop locks on
the network (see it, says it have excellent signal strenght) and gives note
'waiting for keys' (the WPA2 encription key is in the settings - both of router and laptop client - Odyssey).
I've got firmware ver.7 so it is probably the latest.

  • Very Low Connection with WRT54GS / WMP54GS

I have a WRT54GS Router in one brick building and a WMP54GS adapter about 60 ft. away in another brick building. What is the effective range in this situation. I'm getting a "very Low" signal.  Also, I had problems setting this network up. In order to get the adapter to work I had to change the channel on the router from (default 6) to channel 2. Does this have something to do with my low signal? Any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks

the 3 channels that do not interfere with each other are 1,6 and 11. 6 is the cleanest channel being in the middle of the band, but is the most popular. have you tried using only the windows utility to manage your wireless connection? this has been known to rectify poor wireless performance.
