Unstable XP 2600+ with MSI KT4V

Hi
I've just slapped together a new setup with a XP 2600+ Thoroughbred with a KT4V.  It as a working stick of 512 PC2100, an new 450w psu and a couple of  old hard drives.  It becomes very unstable when I run it at 166 but okay at 100, but this reports an unknown athlon running at 1.25.  Any help appreciated.

Here is something that works and that I push on to people in your situation:
Reseating time
You need:
a star shaped, Philips screwdriver, and an ordinary flat one
strong, preferably chemical alcohole and/or Acetonic
a tuss of cotton
clean, preferably dust free cloths
thermal grease, preferably Arctic Silver
good light and a large kitchen table
some patience
a vacuum cleaner, preferably reversible, of a can of compressed air is not bad.
Pull the power cable out, and disconnect mouse, keyboard and such cables from the rear.
Put the case with the open side up on the kitchen table or similar. Have a newspaper under to prevent scratches.
Disconnect all cabling and possible AGP- and PCI-cards from the motherboard. It isn't absolutely necessary, but you might as well take the memory out too, as it will give you more freedom later.
With a philips screwdriver /star shaped/ unfasten the motherboard. When lifting it out I normally use the heat sink. Lift slowly.
Put the motherboard beside the case on something a bit soft, a cloth or a thick newspaper. Use an ordinary, flat, screwdriver to unfasten the heat sink. You push a clip down, and when that is loose it's easy to lift the heat sink off.
Clean both the bottom of the heat sink and the processor chip from old thermal grease. This is important! Strong alcohole and oil free Acetonic and a tuss(?) of cotton are good for this. After the cleaning, dry with a clean cloth.
If it is possible, use high-pressure air to blow the heat sink fins free of dust.
Make a note of the model no. on the processor.
Put the processor back on. Add a small drop of new thermal grease on the very chip of the processor. The drop might be half the size of a corn of rice. Spread it out with a plastic card: American Express Gold.
Make a virtual seating of the heat sink, so you are sure where to finally fasten the clip.
This might sound like a major task, but when prepared you'll do it in about fifteen minutes.
Before putting the motherboard back, you might have a look to see if the case needs some dry cleaning. Also have a look at the PSU and the cards. Don't use anything than air.
Here is some additional, illustrated, guidance:

  • AMD-XP 2600+ and MSI KT4V MS-6712 MB

Can somebody help me pls? I do have a MSI KT4V MS-6712 Motherboard and an AMD Athlon XP 2600 processor. According the CPU RATIO settings table I should put the ratio 16 and the FSB on 133, but I don't have a 16. I only have a 15 and if I use the 15 instead of the 16 I do get a performance of 733 Mhz. When I use the 12.5/13 the system says it's a XP-2000+, but I'm still missing some Mhz. I did already upgrade the BIOS to version 1.8 but no results.
Pls help me, I'm getting crazy! ;(

I changed it into 166 Mhz and now it's acting as a XP 2600+.
Rob, thanks for your suggestion and help in this matter.

  • MSI KT4V-L & Athlon XP 2600+ Barton

    Hi all,
I just upgraded my Athlon XP 2000+ to a Athlon XP 2600+ Barton and i have noticed a problem.
After putting the new CPU on the mobo and a new HS&Fan *Volcano 7+* then flashign the bios, i have had 2 weird reboots.
I had a error once when playing the UT2004 Demo on the 2000+ but i also get errors every now and again witht he 2600+ but thats no big problem its a beta demo so you might expect it but the last error i got said some info as the others did then when i hit ok the pc rebooted.
Also earlyer i went away from the pc then came back and it had rebooted itself again im not sure if this was a power cut or somethin so i am just checking if there any any known problems with the MSI KT4V-L and the AMD Athlon XP 2600+ Barton.
    System specs are as follows:
    Windows XP /SP1
    Latest Drivers
    AMD Athlon XP 2600+
    MSI KT4V-L
NVIDIA Geforce FX 5900 Ultra 265MB
    1GB DDR 400Mhz
    550W PSU

    AMD Athlon XP 2600+
    MSI KT4V-L
NVIDIA Geforce FX 5900 Ultra 265MB
    1GB DDR 400Mhz
    550W PSU
This is what you list for your system. You also admitted the PSU is a Q-Tec, and have been shown the warning about Q-Tec being very low quality.
    1. The 2600 is going to use more power than the 2000.
    2. The GeForce FX 5900 uses a lot of power.
    3. 1GD Ram uses a lot of power.
You have not listed how many drives you have in your system, but there must be at least 2 (1 HDD & 1 CD) those also use power.
The error message is pointing to a video driver as the culprit, but I am willing to bet it is actually caused from the video card's inability to operate due to low power.
I would try borrowing a better quality PSU, and testing with that, and chances are the problem will disappear.

  • MSI KT4V with usb+bios problem!

hi i have an msi kt4v motherboard: http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/m...ODEL=MS-6712...
and it wont startup my keyboard until windows loads.
i even updated my bios to the vary latest one....in the bios list there is a bios with this details:
BIOS Type AMI® BIOS File Size 514KB
    Version 1.7 Update date 2002-12-26
Update Description -Support AMD Barton XP2800+ (FSB333) CPU
-Fixed system sometimes will have IDE CRC error
-Fixed D-bracket2+USB keyboard, cannot use keyboard on DOS mode.
    Special note ,
    Download 6712v17.exe
that suppose to fix my prob. its not the latest though, the latest is 1.8. i updated to 1.8 directly, i didnt upgrade from 1.7 though, but from an earlier version. is anyone else experiencing this problem? whats strange is that it will work if i clear the cmos and reboot. but then if i restart it wont work. do i have to upgrade to 1.7 then to 1.8?

I have the same problem too.  My keyboard\'s cable failed and I replaced it but made it USB only, after the later bios releases it stopped working until windows loaded.
Legacy support is turned on to no avail.  I've been keeping a ps/2 keyboard handy for when I have to get into bios or some other command level operation.

  • MSI KT4V problem with DDR400

I have a look about product description of MSI KT4V, that I own
and there is a limititation of some DDR400 modules. I wish to upgrade my APACER 512MB 266MHZ CL2 to higher frequency, but I have still doubt if I should buy only 333Mhz. - because in my PC store they are selling only APACER and AM1 memory modules.

I don't think you read my post properly.
The SBLive works fine when I have my old HDD in the computer with all the old settings, but when I removed the old HDD and put in the new one with a completely brand new installation of everything (I even had to partition & format the drive), the damn thing stops working.
As for 4.48v being the problem, it is unlikely, because that was the drivers I had installed on the old HDD and they worked A-Ok.
    Please re-read my post.

  • MSI KT4V and Barton 3000+ crash problem

    Hi all!
I recently upgraded my PC (MSI KT4V) with an AMD Barton 3000+ CPU. Before I had a 2600+ Throughbred.
With my old 2600+ I could run my system stable with a FSB set at 166. It couldn't go much higher that 175 before the system became unstable.
With my new Barton I have a problem :
With my FSB set at 166 games like Far Cry and COD crashes. Explorer crashed at sites with Flash content (flash.ocx error report) otherwise no problems. My Pinnacle studio 7 program couldn't render playable movies.
After I underclocked my CPU, setting the FSB at 154 giving me a total speed of 2GHz, all problems are gone now
My system reports a CPU temp at 48 degrees celsius at a 166 FSB setting but could it be a cooling problem anyway?
I have used Artic Silver as thermal paste on the CPU die.
I have reset my memory timings to CAS 2,5 even though the Corsair RAM supports CAS 2 to get the most stable system.
Is the KT 400 chipset up for the job with the increased speed?
I would like to get the most performance out of my new Barton so I hope that some of you guys can help me out here.
    My system spec is :
    Win XP SP1 and SP2
CPU : AMD Barton XP 3000+
    Motherboard : MSI KT4V (Bios 1C0)
    Soundcard : SB Audigy 2
    Graphics card : Radeon 9800pro 256
    Memory : 1GB Corsair XMS (CAS 2)
    Power suply : Antec 480W
    All latest drivers installed
    Best Regards
    Basse

    Hi Osnavi!
48 degrees is an idle temp and about 51 stressed.
The processor is an Athlon 3000+ 333MHz
The cooler is a Thermaltake Silent Boost
    I have 2 modules 512 MB Corsair XMS PC 2700 333MHz placed in slot 1 and 3
I forgot to tell that I ran memtest386 with the fsb set at 166 and I had error reports on the 128Kb L1 cache right away. Lowering the fsb to 154, the memtest came out alright.
Should I remove the heatsink and reaply cooling paste - silver-free maybe?
    Strange
    Any ideas are welcome
    Best regards

  • MSI Ti4800SE and MSI KT4V motherboard incompatible?

Yesterday I bought an MSI Ti4800SE to replace a GeForce2. It booted up fine and Windows detected it and installed the drivers. However, on rebooting, the monitor went blank and there was a series of beeps.
The computer would not start. I tried taking out all the other cards and tried the video card in 2 other computers but all I got was the beeps. I took the card back and got a refund as they had no more in stock.
Is the video card incompatible with the motherboard for some reason? Did I somehow cause the card to die? Should I buy another or will the same thing happen again?
Any help would be much appreciated.
    My system is
    MSI KT4V motherboard
    Athlon 2500
    512Mb Kingston RAM
    SB Live
    Network card
    56k Modem
    2 hard drives
    DVD ROM
    Mitsumi CD writer
    350W PSU
    Windows 98SE
    Thanks in advance

Thanks very much for your advice - looks like I need to spend yet more money then!
But do you think I damaged the card by not supplying enough current, bearing in mind that it booted OK the first time? Or was it not damaged at all?

  • MSI KT4V Motherboard not recognizing my FX5200

I just started building an old computer for a friend. Im taking parts from two older computers and putting them into one. Im taking my friends processor, hard drive, dvd drive, floppy, and ram. Im putting that into my old PC case with my old geforce fx 5200, my old MSI KT4v Ms-6712 ver:1 AGP 8x motherboard. I used to use that old case with that motherboard and video card and it worked fine. Now all the sudden, possible from moving the motherboard from different PCs and such, when i put everything into the case it all seemed to work fine. Except that I'm not even getting a signal from my video card. I have a 350watt power supply that i know is sufficient enough, but my monitor isn't getting a signal from the video card. I tried using an old geforce 2 from a friends PC to test it and it doesn't work in that PC either, so i've ruled out it being a problem with the video card, because my fx5200 works fine in my other friends PC.  ??? I'm wondering if their is a problem with my motherboards AGP slot not being able to detect my FX 5200. I know that moving a different processor to a new motherboard requires the reinstallation of windows, but i should be getting something on the monitor.  Any suggestions or helpful information would be nice. I've searched the internet and google for quite some time and i havn't found any helpful information about possible broken AGP slots or the motherboard not even getting a signal through the AGP card. Help would be nice-  If i left out any important information please let me know, thanks

Well, heres what i tried to do. I tried clearing the cmos. Going by these instructions
    1-touch PSU to clear static
    2-remove the motherboard battery
    3-switch Jbat1 jumper from 1-2 to 2-3
    4- wait atleast 10 minutes
    5-switch jumper back
    6-reinsert the battery
    7-boot up etc.
I did all that but still no luck. The screen was still blank when i booted it up. I didn't unplug everything before resetting CMOS(by that i mean the harddrive, floppy, and DVD, but i did unplug it from wall and everything), because it didn't say to in a MSI support page. I did try to boot up with the barebones setup though after resetting cmos but still no luck. Just the CPU/heatsink, motherboard, one stick of ram, and video card. Still nothing happening on the screen. I do have an extra power supply and im going to try putting that in next. The one that is currently in there was used in my friends PC and was working fine. Ill give my larger power supply a try though. Ill post back later about if the power supply did anythiing or not. Thanks
p.s.-Before you mentioned the standoffs and im going to look under the motherboard as well to see if their are too many or too little. The testing continues....

  • MSI KT4V and radeon card compatibility.

hi guys...first of all, sorry about bad english, i'm from germany.
well, the point is, i actually have a MSI KT4V mother board installed in mi pc, and i planed to buy a Radeon 9800 pro graphic card, i have 2 options...buy the BBA (build by ati)..or the sapphire one, i want to know if i will have any trouble of compatibility with both of this cards. Just that, please i'm waiting for your's answers guys

Codegen don't perform as well as you might think. The info I ask for should be on a sticker on the PSU, inside the case. But I'll help you, since I've been there before.
As you see below, there is not much room for a Radeon9800:
"Codegen 400W Pentium 4 ATX Switching Dual Fan Power Supply, Retail Package
    Output:400W
    +3.3V -> 14A Orange
    +5.0V -> 30A Red
    +12V -> 12A Yellow
    +5VSB -> 2A Purple
    -5V -> 0.5A White
    -12V -> 0.8A Blue "

Just finished a lot of research into the same problem. This is what's up with this. The MB BIOS polls the HDD firmware to make ID and the post continues, but with this MSI MB it wont recognize the HDD, thats because in this case the HDD sucks. I have two IBM DTLA-307045 40GB drives and the firmware for all these drives(and lots of other IBM's) are bad. These links will let you ID and Flash new firmware for the drives.
    http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=0&uid=psg1MIGR-44195&loc=en_US
    http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=psg1MIGR-39082#IDUtility
BUT your problems will not be completely over. The BIOS for the MB still has trouble recognizing the HDD firmware, remember the firmware for the drive didn't even exist when the BIOs was created. I flashed the BIOS on the MB to the latest revision level and it still don't like those IBM drives, even though the drives with their new firmware are now AOK. I don't think it ever will unless MSI includes the new IBM firmware ID in the BIOS.  An older product like this its not likely. If we want any kind of reliability we are going to have to get new drives/MB or both.
