Unsuccessful install - HD Disk Repair - what's the safe/smart way?

Thank you in advance.
I'm trying to update my OS from Leopard to Snow Leopard, but the install is unsuccessful. I have an intel based iMac on which I initially used Tiger and then upgraded to Leopard without any trouble. In the Snow Leopard installation instructions, I read that I should try a few hard drive maintenance measures, but none of those have led to a successful update. Upon trying to verify the disk, Disk Utility reports that the disk does need repair, which is the next troubleshooting step according to the Snow Leopard install guide. Apparently, I can only do so by booting up the computer off an OS installation disc. Naturally, this is a bit disconcerting because I am under the impression that when I repair the disk, it will wipe my hard drive clean; thus, I will have to restore all of my hard drive from a backup or some sort of copy of my iMac hard drive. Unfortunately, I do not fully understand what actually occurs in a hard disk repair and what the potential ramifications are nor do I fully understand what a hard drive restore or re-copying it back to my computer does.
My goal is to update the OS to Snow Leopard so that CS4 is compatible with my computer. Also, I have had trouble using Canon codecs in Final Cut Pro; in fact, I can't even transcode them using the log and transfer option, and I read that an OS update to Snow Leopard may fix the issue. Of course, my ideal scenario is to update the OS while maintaining or easily restoring/copying my iMac Hard Drive volume back to my computer with the updated OS, without having to reinstall apps/software or even redoing all of my preferences or the setup, settings and shortcuts on my desktop and dock. Is this possible? Do you have any suggestions for a better way to go about all of this?
Here are some of my concerns more specifically:
Ordinarily, I try to backup my iMac Hard Drive with QRecall to an external hard drive regularly, but I have never actually had to restore any of the content, thankfully. For the purposes of what I am trying to do, would it be more sensible to just do a drag and drop copy of the iMac Hard Drive volume to an external and then back to the iMac after repairing the iMac hard drive disk and updating the OS or is it smarter to restore from the QRecall archive?
Assuming the hard drive disk repair solves the problem, when should I update the OS, before or after restoring my iMac hard drive? Or is the OS update something that I will do during the iMac hard drive disk repair?
Maybe this is a stupid question, but when I restore or copy (not sure of proper terminology) my current iMac Hard Drive Volume back to my computer, is the old OS not a part of that? Is it possible that I'd update the OS, then restore or copy the hard drive volume back to the computer, and then it would revert back to the older OS Leopard?
Again, thank you very much.

I am under the impression that when I repair the disk, it will wipe my hard drive clean;
That is an incorrect assumption. A disk repair will not erase the hard drive. See:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1782
It may, however, be the case that Disk Utility cannot repair the drive catalog. If that occurs, you can try a third-party disk repair tool - Alsoft's Disk Warrior is the one most often recommended - and if that fails then you will have to erase or, if erasing fails, replace the hard drive.
My goal is to update the OS to Snow Leopard so that CS4 is compatible with my computer.
Snow Leopard is not necessary for CS4 compatibility. CS4 predates Snow Leopard by quite a while and is and always has been compatible with 10.5 Leopard. CS5 is necessary for full Snow Leopard support.
would it be more sensible to just do a drag and drop copy of the iMac Hard Drive volume to an external
You cannot do a drag-and-drop backup of your hard drive. There are many hidden files and linkages that would not be copied.
when I restore or copy (not sure of proper terminology) my current iMac Hard Drive Volume back to my computer, is the old OS not a part of that?
Your backup has whatever OS version was on your computer when you made the backup. So if you restore that backup (assuming you backed up the entire drive and restore that same entire drive), you'll be going back to that version of Mac OS X.
I'm complete unclear on when you've made a backup and what got backed up, so without more information I can't say the steps I would take in your situation. Post back with details on your backup and we'll go from there.
Regards.

    It is true that the only way to sync your Mac with iCloud is to upgrad.  You need to be running OS X Lion 10.7.2 or higher in order to sync your Mac with iCloud.  At this point, you can upgrade directly to OS X Mountain Lion from the version of OS X you are now running (10.6.8).   You can purchase and download the Mountain Lion upgrade from the Mac App Store for $19.99.  After upgrading you will see iCloud in System Preferences.  This guide explains how to sync your Mac with iCloud after upgrading: http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/mac.html.
    Once all your devices are signed into the same iCloud account and you have turned on your iCloud data syncing, you will be able to keep them all in sync using iCloud.  You will still have to sync with iTunes to manage your iTunes media such as music, movies, podcasts, etc.  You will have the option to either continue backing up automatically with your computer when you sync with iTunes, or to back up your iOS devices automatically to iCloud every 24 hours (as long as they are connected to wifi and your chargers).

    The first time I attempted to install ML was on a late 2011 MBP.  It ran for three minutes then gave me the error message: Could not install OSX due to an unexpected error.  I was using the original ML install app, not a USB or other drive.
    After a couple of restarts wiht the same result I saw a message to the effect that the install was trying to close open apps.  I closed apps  manually a few times to no avail.  I shut down instead of restarting then booted into Safe mode (hold down the shift key when starting) and that did it.  The install went smoothly after that.
    I since installed ML in two iMacs using a cloned copy of the install app on a USB drive.  This time I shut down the computers and booted into Safe Mode first and there were no problems.
    I don't know if this issue is the one causing you these problems but it is a simple enough solution to try.

  • What's the most efficient way to serve a file from a servlet?

    I have a servlet that does various different things depending on the needs. Sometimes it dynamically generates content, and sometimes all it does is send a file out, with no alteration.
    What is the most efficient way to just send a file?
    One option:
    OutputStream os = response.getOutputStream();
    InputStream is = new FileInputStream(...)
    (send all the bytes from is to os, the regular way using a buffer)Another option is to say:
    RequestDispatcher rd = response.getRequestDispatcher(fileName);
    rd.forward();Any other options? What's the prefered way of doing this?
    I know the rule of "don't optimize too early" but this is a situation where we need to get the maximum amount of files served with the hardware we have, and it's going to be a lot of static files, so efficiency is important.
    Thanks

    Ok, that's what I thought. It would be nice if there were a "response.sendStream(InputStream input)" method in the ServletResponse class. Even nicer would be a sendFile or sendChannel or something. This is probably a common usage and it's a place where the container has many opportunities for optimization. For example, it could call the operating systems send_file kernel call so the entire transfer would be done directly from the disk controller to the ether card (on systems that support that).
    For now I'll just do my own buffered copy.

  • What is the most effective way to get my imac 2 ghz intel core duo 2 10.4.11 to be able to run 10.5 and sync with my iphone 4s?

    What is the most effective way to get my imac 2 ghz intel core duo 2 10.4.11 to be able to run 10.5 and sync with my iphone 4s?

    As your Mac should run Snow Leopard provided it has at least 1GB memory, that would be a good deal easier and very much cheaper than trying to find a 10.5 install disc.
    Snow Leopard costs $30 approx from the online Apple store (£26 if you're in UK)
    You'll need to update Tiger to 10.4.11 with the combo installer first (unless you're just erasing the disc and starting fresh) You can then update SL from 10.6.3 to 10.6.8 with its combo installer.
    For comparison, 10.5 Leopard is currently running about $130 from Apple (if still available) and more on Amazon etc.

    Leopard is no longer available at the Apple Store but may be available by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753).
    If you can't obtain a retail install DVD from Apple, look on eBay or Google the installer part numbers to possibly find at an on-line store. Here's what to look for:
    MB427Z/A  Leopard 10.5.1 install DVD
    MB576Z/A  Leopard 10.5.4 install DVD
    MB021Z/A  Leopard 10.5.6 install DVD (single user)

    Use the Organizer backup & restore method, starting the restore from the TLY file. Probably best to use a custom location as the XP file structure will be different. See this link for further help:

    (I don't want to delete anything)

    To recover the photos from an iPod Classic you'll need to use third-party software and the photos gained will be quite low resolution.

    Plug it in anytime you desire.
    Charge it until you are ready to unplug it, then do so.
    The only no-no is allowing the device to completely discharge.

  • What is the most effective way to write Statement to catch and reverse errors during query excution?

    Hello my friends:
    I am wondering what is the most effective way to deal with errors, specifically in a
    Stored Procedure.
    I wrote something like this:
    BEGIN TRY
    BEGIN TRANSACTION
    /*My statements goes in here*/
    IF ERROR_NUMBER() = 0 -- Do I need this line?
    COMMIT TRANSACTION;
    END TRY
    BEGIN CATCH
    IF ERROR_NUMBER() > 0 --Do I need this line?
    ROLLBACK TRANSACTION;
    END CATCH;
    It would make sense using the if Statement when attempting to log errors.
    Just too many variations.
    Thanks

  • What is the most efficent way to create both a standard and HD DVD

    Hi,
    I'm just getting into HD video editing, and I have relatives who will be several years behind me. I will be making HD DVD's for myself to use, but I will also need to make standard DVD's to send to my relatives.I am assuming that the HD DVD's I create will not play in a standard DVD player. I may be wrong. However, If this is correct, is there a particular point in the process of working with Encore where I can make that choice, create the DVD, and then go back and alter it in order to create the other type without destroying and having to redo everything that was done up to that point?

    Thank you Hunt. Being ahead of most of the rest of the world and getting the best technology out there can be a pain sometimes. Reading through Jon Geddes' article left me scratching my head several times, and some of it went way over my head, but I'll keep at it, until it sinks in. Some language, terms, and shorthand, I'm sure are simple to understand to a lot of people, but I'm not in that catagory. I'll just keep working at it.

    I would edit the Project in HD in PrPro. The BD authoring part will be straight workflow.
    For the SD DVD-Video, you have a few choices. You can Export to DV-AVI Type II for Import into a new Encore Project for the DVD. Some feel that PrPro does not do a good job at down-rezing from HD to SD. For a workflow that will likely yield better quality, see this http://www.precomposed.com/blog/2009/07/hd-to-sd-dvd-best-methods/. If you have PrPro/Encore CS4, then Jeff Bellune's /thread/487134?tstart=0 might be useful to you. Just follow the links to the tutorial.
    Good luck,
