Unsupported File Problem

I've been browsing through some old JPG files that are in my aperture library. The library is managed on the internal HD and has has backups (time machine and a seperate vault backup).
With some of these files when the preview finishes loading I get the "Unsupported Image Format" in a triangle on a black rectangle.
I've tried repairing permissions and restoring the whole library - this didn't fix it.
Strangely when I export the file I get a JPG that preview can't read either but it is readable by Photoshop.
I'm currently converting all the JPGs from the affected time (those that don't work and those that do) through a convertor program to change them to TIFFs.
Anyone know why this has happened?
The HDD is relatively new, I replaced it last summer and hasn't had any other problems. I get the feeling that this is an aperture and preview problem - paticularly as Photoshop seems to handle the file fine.

library is managed on the internal HD and has backups
Do the corresponding files in your TM-backup show the same problem, when you go back in time?
Try to locate the original jpegs in the "Masters" folder inside the Aperture library (ctrl-click the Aperture library and select "Show package contents"). The "Masters" folder is organized by the date of the "Import session". Look into the subfolder of "Masters" for the year, month, and day you imported the images in question.  Then, with this folder open, dive into the time tunnel of Time Machine and go back in time. Restore some of your original files to the Desktop and check, if they are o.k.

  • CFZIP problems - Unsupported File Format

[I tried researching this via Google, but the terms are so generic I didn't find any relevant hits]
I am working with files that originate via incoming emails as attachments.  In CF I detach them from the emails and hand them off to other jobs for processing. Sometimes they are zipped files, and I have been using CFZIP to extract the actual data file and process it.
I started getting new files from a client and they are zipped (.ZIP file type), and if I open them from Outlook WinZip opens them just fine.  If I open them in Notepad, they all start with "PK" which I have always believed to mean that they were zip (PKZIP) format, as opposed to other flavors such as GZip.  But when the CF script tries to open that same file with CFZIP, it throws an Unsupported File Format error.
Any thoughts of diagnosing this error, to determine if it really is a valid ZIP format file?  Are there any utilities out there that would give me info on exactly what program/algorithm was used for the compression process?
In the past when I've had these problems it was because the file was .GZ (Gzip format) and not .ZIP, and in those cases even Winzip indicated as much when it opened the file.  But this is perplexing because Winzip seems to think the file is just fine, and CF doesn't.
    Thanks for any ideas!
    -reed

Winzip supports some functionality that doesn't work with other zip programs, if I recall correctly. Perhaps these zip files use that functionality.

  • Fed up with "Unsupported File format" crashes!

I really like Aperture - but, I am totally fed up with only being able to edit a few photos before I get the dreaded red/brown screen and the message of 'Unsupported file format' This cannot be the case as they are all .tifs and I have just edited several OK. My whole day is now one of 'stop/start' and either quit or sometimes 'Force quit'. Then Aperture works fine for another short series of edits - before the same problem recurs. It wastes a lot of valuable editing time - and completely spoils the otherwise pleasurable experience of using Aperture!
I have made a lot of scans from original slides via a Nikon Coolscan 5000 - using Silverfast I have converted these from 48 bit to 24 bit. However, the file size is still large at 100MB - to get the best from the slides. I then import these .tifs into Aperture 2.1. I am using a MacBook Pro, 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 MB RAM. I have an external 24 inch monitor. The .tif files are on an external firewire hard drive - 500 GB LaCie. My Aperture library is in my pictures folder on my MacBook Pro.
Can someone PLEASE explain how and why I can make a series of edits fine in Aperture and then suddenly I get the red/brown screen and this unsupported file format message?
Is it a memory problem? Given that I need to edit such large files is it a problem for my (powerful) MacBook Pro? Or, is it a more general problem with Aperure 2.1?
Any advice - or solutions - PLEASE

It's a bug in Aperture 2.x with large files and/or large pixel dimensions on images (not clear which). I have submitted a bug report, as should anyone who is seeing this. You'll find quite a few threads on this if you search back. The error message is frustratingly incorrect: there is nothing whatsoever unsupported or wrong with the file format, it just leads you down some dead ends in trying to find a solution while you figure that out.
I could sometimes not even work on one image before it would do this. I went from 6GB to 10GB in my Mac Pro, and now I can pretty reliably work on two images before having to restart. So that to me smells like a memory leak or memory mismanagement of some sort is at the root of this, but who knows. We're all just waiting for each next release, hoping Apple has finally found and fixed this, because as you know they don't spend a lot of time discussing what bugs they're addressing; they just show up fixed eventually (one hopes!)
If anyone chimes in here to tell you it's your fault for working with such large images, just ignore them. There were releases of 1.5 that handled these images just fine, as Aperture should. It broke with 2.x.

  • Red Box - Unsupported File Type - Large Tiff - Large Scans - 10,000 pixels

    Hello All,
I am a user of Aperture 2.1, and I have grown to love the program except for one major issue. Large files that are imported into the program are simply unsupported.
I scan 6x7 medium format negatives (8649x10712 @ 530.2 megs) and 4x5 negatives (very large drum scans) into my system (new 8 core, 12 gig ram, 512 meg vidcard, 10.5.2) and the issues begin. A thumbnail is properly built. Once the thumbnail is selected, and a preview is built, the image appears briefly and is replaced by a red box soon with the text "Unsupported File Type". If I change views to full screen all I see is a red box with the same text. Ie. I can't work the image.
The files are perfectly fine. I work them in photoshop cs3 no problem, and I can view them with quick look preview no problem.
This is highly frustrating as I work primarily in larger formats and create large prints!
It seems like the bug occurs in files that have a side larger than 10,000 pixels. This is a massive issue to large format/panoramic workflow!
I have called Apple tech support and the techs claim ignorance. That could mean they do not know of the issue which does not bode well for a solution. I'm in the dark. Please shed some light!
    Three questions:
Is anyone else experiencing these issues?
Is there a workaround that doesn't involve cutting file size?
Has there been any acknowledgment from Apple support regarding this issue?
I am most frustrated as Aperture is billed as a professional product, but it is unable to keep up with the demands of a working fine art photographer.
Awesome product but needs some adjustments!
    photofl0w

William, thanks for your input, but I feel that your position avoids the primary issue. Aperture is a Digital Asset Manager, and as such, should be able to manage digital image assets.
From Aperture's Webpage: "See how Aperture lets you import, manage, and enhance your photos in one simple, integrated workflow." It says photos, not Raw photos. In fact, I'll take it one step further, in the tutorial CD that came with 1.5, the narrator mentions the 16-bit workflow in Aperture with Tiffs, more than once.
I purchased Aperture for management and integrated workflow. Apple states: "Now it’s even easier to cull through shoots, enhance images, manage massive libraries, and deliver stunning photos." No where does it say that the functionality of the program is limited to RAW files. Ie. Apple never mentions that Large .tif files are not supported.
I have 6x7 and 4x5 Scans, Masters, Working Images, Print files and Web images that I would like to organize, stack, label, rate, view versions simultaneously on my second screen, sort, arrange, and keyword. The program's basic functionality is thwarted by an issue that Apple has not owned up to.
If Apple had mentioned in its literature that large .tif's weren't supported I would not be posting this, as I would not have purchased the software. But nowhere, not in phone conversations with Apple Techs (3), not on their own Forums where other end users have hit a massive workflow brick wall, and not even after I mentioned to a One on One guru, has Apple said, oh, yeah, we are aware of it and working on it. There is no transparency here.
Now, I have purchased Aperture, learned it, and imported thousands of files into it. I like the program as I have seen it function with smaller files perfectly, but this large file issue needs to be overcome.
Regarding editing images, yes I use photoshop for the majority of my post-production. I then use a finely tuned Colorburst Rip on a nice Epson for my Fine Prints. Those are the functions of the respective programs. Aperture is a DAM, a program that among other things allows the end use to manage their files effectively and maintain a strong workflow.
Regarding space - esata is a beautiful thing.

  • In aperture 3.4.5, I get unsupported file error when exporting version of photo I've edited using plugins?

In aperture 3.4.5, I get unsupported file error when exporting version of photo I've edited using plugins. I have try reinstalling aperture three times, deleting plists a few times, reinstalling plugins, restarting my MacBook Pro many times. Everything I've tried may fix the problem for a very short while and I can export a few photos before it returns. The problem happens with topaz and photomatrix pro plugins after I edited and try to export version.

I had the same problem with the Photomatix plug-in and this solved it for me. I realised it only happened with Photomatix and not other plug-ins so I checked where the plug-ins were installed. The Photomatix plug-in was installed in
    ~/Library/Application Support/Aperture/Plug-Ins/
where ~ is the home location for the current user account. All the other plug-ins however were installed in
    Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Aperture/Plug-Ins/
which is the location that makes them available to all user accounts on your Mac. Moving the Photomatix plug-in to this location solved the problem for me.
Note that the Library directory under the first location is normally hidden, to get to it hold down the Option (Alt) key and select it from the Finder Go menu.

  • Unsupported File Format (nokia lumia 520)

My Nokia Lumia 520 will not post pictures to social networks, transfer them to my computer, set them as my lock screen or even edit them. I purchased the phone only a couple of months ago and it was working perfectly, but then it would just come up with 'Unsupported File Format' when i tried to do anything with them. I did a full system reset, but the problem remained and I don't know what to do. I still have warranty on it and don't know wether swapping it would do any good. Please help!

    Hi cjford,
    Welcome to Nokia Support Discussions!
Are you still having the same issue? If so, have you tried the suggestion given by nj15? Did you reset it by going to Settings > About > Reset your phone? Are all the pictures taken from your phone's camera or came from other sources?
    Keep us posted.

  • .jpg/.tiff/.png unsupported file types in iDVD 7.1.1 ?

Updated to iDVD 7.1.1 and am now unable to correctly open an old .dvdproj created in iDVD '06.
Worse still, iDVD tells me that there are themes missing (They are all there, including my own 'favorite' themes, in the user/library/application support/iDVD and ./library/application support/iDVD.)
So, I try to recreate my 'favorite' theme from an existing bundled theme 'Sliding Panes' (as I did in the iDVD '06) and I get:
    "Unsupported File Type: Unknown format
    /Library/Application Support/iDVD/Themes/iDVD 5/0002SlidingPanes.theme/Contents/Resources/dropzonedefcontent.tif
In fact it's the same problem for any theme i try to use, including if I try to drop a .jpg image as a background...Always the same "Unsupported File Type" message...
So, I've reinstalled the iDVD updater to 7.1.1; dumped the com.apple.iDVD.plist; repaired permissions and still the same...
    Where's the problem ?

I suggest you use this app / utility from apple's web site prior to reinstalling iDvd:

  • File open error: unsupported file type Mpeg Streamclip

having a problem... I am using mpeg streamclip to convert vob files from a dvd. the problem is that the program says that the first vob file is an unsupported file type. I know that this is not true. The DVD plays, and the remaining vob files are opened and processed by the program correctly. Any advice or suggestions?

I am having the same problem. The first VOB file in the sequence will not open in either Streamclip or Quicktime. This is not the menu display image, but the first chunk of the video (the menu image actually will open). All the ones after it can be opened either individually or joined as a group.
The DVD plays fine on the mac and also in the regular DVD player. Any idea if this is perhaps some equipment fault when the DVD burner "finalizes" the disk? Am using a combo VHS/DVD-R unit. It is not super high-end, but then neither are these old home videos I'm converting.

  • Unsupported file type

I have a Droid Razr but I need some assistance. The phone has the Kindle App which I have no problem with so long as the book was directly from Amazon. The problem I have is that I get most of my books from other book sites and would love to be able to read read them on my phone. When I email the book to myself to download it to the phone, the attached book has the message "Unsupported file type" and I am not able to download the book at all.
Does anyone have any information about this and how I can get MOBI books loaded onto the phone? I have convertrd the format to PDF in Calibre and can download those and then I put them into the Kindle folder. I can then open them using the Kindle App. But in the Kindle app you don't have any of the options you would have if the book were bought from Amazon.
Does anyone else have this problem or know of a way around this?  Thanks much for any advice

I just think it's odd that if I get an email with a book attached, the
attachment shows Unsupported file type. And then you can't do a thing with it.
You don't even get an option of any kind. I think at this point I am going
to  forget even trying to use Kindle on the phone. I don't want to have to
go to all  the hassle of connecting it to the PC. The only time I would want
to use it on  the phone would be if I was traveling and received a book, it
would be great to  just be able to download it to the phone.

  • Unsupported file type: unknown | File type: Video_ts.bup

I have a home made DVD made on a Windows machine. I made a copy of the DVD with Toast 6 without a problem. However, when I try to import the same file into iDVD it gives me the notice stated in the caption -- unsupported file type: unknown. Does anyone know a way to convert Video_ts.bup into a supported file type?
    Thanks,
    Jim

I don't really know but feel doubtful as
DVD is as standard - interlaced SD-video with a frame rate of 25 fps (PAL) or 29.97 fps (NTSC)
the feeding it progressive material in HD and in some cases as 24 fps  - must be problematic.
    I would
    a. Import my movie into iMovie
    b. Share to Media Browser and as Large (not HD or other res. as result will suffer)
    c. In iDVD import from Media button and Movie and here find Your movie and drop it into iDVD menu window

  • Unsupported File Type: Invalid Video

I'm creating a video project using iMovie. I'm now working on the DVD in iDVD and customizing my menus. I'm trying to drag pictures into the drop zone but I keep getting the message "Unsupported File Type: Invalid Video". Well first of all, its not even a video I'm trying to drag in, just regular JPEG photos. Second, I can usually drag pictures onto the main menu screen but when I get to the scene selections, that's when I start running into my problem. Has this happened to anyone else?
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

No, I've tried that. See, I can import like, the first 6 photos, after that I start getting the message. I even try importing the photos that I've already imported again and those won't even import.
Awhile ago while I had those six pictures imported, I saved the project, closed it and reopened it. The pictures werent there.
I've been trying any photo now that I have on my computer and nothing will import.

  • Unsupported File Type: Broken Reference

I am trying to add a movie to iDVD and it tells me "Unsupported File Type: Broken Reverence". I have recopied the movie to my files, but still receive this message. All the other clips that I made with iMovie HD have loaded fine. It is just this one. It is only 51 seconds long.

You can create two kinds of Quicktime movies: self-contained movies and reference movies.
Reference movies are very small files and are basically just a set of instructions with path references to the elements used in the movie. If you move, delete or rename ANY of the elements used in the reference movie, the file can not be opened and you will get a 'Broken Reference' error message.
Self-contained movies are an actual, rendered final movie.
It sounds like your problem movie is a reference movie and you have moved or deleted one or more of the elements used in making the movie.
