"..unsupported or damaged"

I have exported a jpeg from LR 2.5 (from raw file).  The jpg looks fine in Windows viewer and Photoshop, but when I import the jpeg back into LR, (on 2 different computers) the file is listed as unsupported or damaged. I repeated this with a new export and import--same thing.  The jpeg is small and seems to be fine in all other respects.  The raw file was processed as grayscale, but I can't see how that would make a difference.  Any thoughts? Thanks
Michael

Any guesses as to why?
Looks like a bug in the mogrify code to me. It probably somehow sees your image is greyscale and tries to help you by converting it to a single channel image but in the process forgets to get rid of the sRGB profile. You can try if a newer version works, but it is probably unavoidable until it gets fixed (try warning the LR/mogrify author, he might have some insight - he is very good at this stuff). If you have Photoshop, I would set up a droplet to do the image borders instead of mogrify. This works perfect for me and won't corrupt the file.
Also, if I email these exports could they appear damaged to recipients who view them in other programs.
It very definitely could. You have seen two examples already - Photoshop and Lightroom. However, I guess that most email programs will just ignore the issue as on Windows they are all not color managed (they ignore profiles) and the Mac OS X image Library just ignores the incorrect profile and shows the image anyway. So it is probably not much of an issue.

I have just returned from a trip where i was on the road for 7 weeks and out of 5000 shots have 30 corrupted DNG files, one of which i would love to save please can you help? My work flow:
Shoot DNG files using Leica M9
Take SD card out sporadically and using SD card reader mount on Macbook air (very old) v1
Open Lightroom 4 on macbook air import to HD
Drag and drop in Lightroom on to external HD
Realised pretty soon some thing was not right with images but continued work flow with out problems with any other import
On returning home i imported project into a new LR5 project on my 15'' Macbook pro running OsX10.8.5, processor 2Ghz intel i7 with 8gb ram
IN LR 5.5(just updated) on my Macbook pro & Macbook air LR4 I can see the preview of the corrupted images in library mode but when go to Develop i get the "The files appears to be unsupported or damaged". In Photoshop CS5 i get "Could not complete your request because Photoshop does not recognise this type of file"
The corrupt files are the same size 36.4MB as the non corrupt images suggesting the info is there. Is there software anyone can suggest that will open the file with the corruption so i can some how fix in photoshop? The SD card was one of many used and was over written many times after so i can not retrieve the images that way i'm afraid.
Any help would be greatly appreciated and i can forward you a copy of the file if you have the time.

Realised pretty soon some thing was not right with images but continued work flow with out problems with any other import
    Exactly what was not right?
Most likely a hardware problem causing corruption in the transfer of files from SD card to your computer. It could be the SD card itself, card reader, hard disk or memory.
    Side issue:
Open Lightroom 4 on macbook air import to HD
Drag and drop in Lightroom on to external HD
why don't you save yourself a step and import directly to the external HD (and thus also produce one less place where file corruption can happen)?

when trying to import my photos in lightroom 2 I keep getting this message.  Some import opperations were not performed.  Files appear to be unsupported or damaged.  Items 1 -100 Item 101-176.  Please help!!!!
Raw files shot with a  canon T1i.

Is the latest update Lightroom version 2 supposed to be able to support a Canon T1i?
If so, have you installed the latest update (2.7)?

  • AVI file won`t open - unsupported or damaged

I am using Premiere CS5, and did an edit about 5 days ago with .avi files recorded with FRAPS - screen recorder, everything was fine...
When I open that project now, it asks me to find the file because I changed my HDD letter, and when I find it, it says "Unsupported or damaged file"
    I don`t know why?
How it worked few days ago?
The same is happening when I try to import that in new project...
The files has just been on hard drive, and I haven˙t touched them...
I can play them only with VLC...
I tried Digital Video Repair, and show like it fixed the file, but I still can`t open it up..
How can it be that the file damages itself?

    Yep... seen it before
Download VLC Media Player and install it.
In the folder containing your AVI files, create a new text document called "avi2mp4.bat" (without the quote marks). Be sure it has the .BAT extension.
Paste the following into the batch file:
    @ECHO OFF
    for %%a in (*.avi) do "C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc" -I dummy "%%a" --sout=#:file{dst="%%~na".mp4} vlc://quit
If VLC is installed in the Program Files folder and not the Program Files (x86) folder, remove the " (x86)" from this line, and save the file.
To run the batch, simply double-click it, or you can drag and drop AVI files onto it, and they will be rewrapped as MP4s with the same filename as the original. If you use the drag and drop approach, you can save this file anywhere on your hard drive, and any files dropped onto it will be converted and placed in the same folder as the original.
That's it; the MP4s will (should, anyway) import into Premiere without any further workarounds.

  • The file appears to unsupported or damaged - not opening in LR5, Photoshop CS5 or any other software

I've just returned from traveling round asia and found a fair few images show 'The file appears to unsupported or damaged' error message, I can see the preview but can not develop, this is in LR5
After shooting on the road I took the SD card and imported the images straight from the SD card to the HD on my macbook air ver1 through LR4. I then moved the files to an external drive through LR4.
Now I've returned I'm now using my Macbook pro 15'' and LR5 and these files aren't opening, they didnt open on the Macbook air either.
There are possibly 30 files and they all come from one import so i'm guessing they all corrupted on import.
Is there any software i can use that will open these files and allow me to rescue them?
Your help would be greatly appreciated as one of the files looks like one of the best i took during the entire 6 week trip.

Where are the photos located? Can you physically locate them and see that they are full sized?

  • LR claims that one ORF-file (RAW) is damaged or missing (unsupported or damaged).

    Hi all,
I have recently purchased LR5 to change my workflow of creating my webpage from my photos. Instead of using ACDSee and WS_FTP next to Adobe products, I can do all within LR5 and PS.
After setting the catalog up as I wanted, creating a template for my webpage (with the Juicebox plugin) and putting several pictures inside, I have successfully uploaded the webpage to my website.
The idea was that after this, I can just add pictures to the webpage and all will be done automatically (well almost), the renewed webpage will be created after I upload again.
This was working for the first say 47 pictures. Today I added another 11 and all of a sudden the export or upload function are claiming a missing ORF file.
The file seem unchanged since it was shot, what can be the cause of this ?
Will be happy for anyone having an idea.
    Best regards,
    Ruud Westerhout

    Hi,
According to Windows and Acronis (True-Image) there is no previous version of this file.
If I want to open it with Adobe Photoshop, which opens Camera Raw 8.7.1 Olympus E-M1 I get the explanation mark and an error : "Unable to read the full size image. There was an error parsing the file".
This file has been in this very Website Publishing collection for two weeks now and has been exported and uploaded without problems. It shows to have been edited within LR6, which is correct, I did so.
Until today the file was showing nothing in LR, but now I get the additional text as overlay "The file appears to be unsupported or damaged."
The website was exported to my HDD and my website and looks to be OK, the "missing picture" is available and can be seen.
    I find this very strange.
    Regards,
    Ruud

  • JPG´s will not import into lightroom 1.4.1 ("the file appears to be unsupported or damaged")

I have converted a collection of raw files with Autopano pro to jpgs.
When importing them into lightroom 1.4.1, part of the collection is not displayed in lightroom and the software gives me the msg "the file appears to be unsupported or damaged".
The same files open up with any other jpg supporting software.
Can anybody help me with this

I was not aware of this pano program but have downloaded a trial copy and will give it a go. I just did a set of images that PTGUI could not deal with and it looks like this program did it perfectly even without muddling with the control points. Its also dealing with 1 image where I cropped out a conflicting angle of view area.
I just imported the jpeg out of this package into LR with no problems. I edited it after import to LR with Photoshop CS3 to do a cleanup crop of the pan.
I'm very impressed with PanoPro right now. Will have to purchase. PLUS...it runs either Mac or PC!!! Solves yet another problem I've had with my conversion to Apple.

  • File appears to be unsupported or damaged after exporting an image.

After exporting an Image I wanted to go back into the development module and make another tonal correction. After clicking on develop I received this error "File appears to be unsupported or damaged". What happened? I had just toned and exported it. The file is on an external hard drive and is a Canon MKII CR2. I'm using Lightroom 4 on a Mac Book Pro. Thanks.

Did you tell LR to add the exported photo to the library upon export and are now by mistake trying to work on the "re-imported export"?

  • Unsupported or Damaged SWF

    Hi,
The other topics about this seemed to be different to my own problem, so I think I need to start a new topic.
For my After Effects project (CS4) I use SWF files instead of image sequences or MOV files etc. Leading up until now, I've had few problems with them, but as the project has built, I've encountered a problem, where every time I open the project, I'm met with around 20 error messages regarding a section of my SWF files, saying that they are unsupported or damaged. I see them in my SWF folder in the AE project, and they are disconnected, and typically all it takes is for me to replace the file and it reconnects them. I'm also required to purge the video and image files before I can access certain things.
Just looking to see what it could be related to and possible ways around it.
    Thanks

Depends on what the SWFs contain, I guess. These issues have been known to happen, as the continuous rasterization of vector elemnts is quite memory intense. Additionally, conforming different frame rates and bypassing scripts may have ill effects. Hard to say but if there is no specific reason to use SWFs, you simply might rtry to replace some of them with image files. I can't imagine perfectly sharp vector rendering to be required on all elements nad well, SWF being a delivery and distribution format, it is probably not that sensible to misuse it as a video container, too, when otehr formats can do that a lot better...

  • "Unsupported or damaged" but can view in Picasa

I just came back from a long trip out west and almost all (a very few do open) .nef images in Lightroom 5 64bit give me the "unsupported or damaged" message.
I imported the files using Picasa and can view them just fine on there and can see the EXIF data.
A lot of serching online led me to try converting the files to .DNG using the DNG converter 8.1 but I get the same "unsupported or damaged" message.
Here is an example file to inspect.
    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2454109/DSC_0035.NEF
    Thanks for the help.

Although the file appears to import into LR5.2RC, Lightroom then reports a problem with the file which basically means it is corrupted somehow. The preview is shown, but it cannot be edited. Trying to open directly into Photoshop also fails.
Worst case scenario is that it was caused by the camera. Best case scenario it was caused by the card reader (I assumed you were importing via card reader, not direct from camera). What CStaack was likely saying is that you need to checkout the hardware chain involved with this issue.....it could be camera, card reader, cable connecting camera or card reader, hard drive were the images were copied to, or even faulty RAM.
Hopefully it'll just be a card reader or cable issue.....

  • Lightroom 1.4.1, Files appear to be unsupported or damaged

    Hello Everyone.
    Here are my specs:
    Lightroom 1.4.1
    Mac OS X 10.6.1
    Canon T1i   Raw Files  .CR2
Whenever I try to import files into Lightroom 1.4.1, I get the following error:
"The files appear to be unsupported or damaged."
This happens on every single image.  I can open them fine with Aperture, and Photoshop CS3.  The files are being imported to my computer, and are straight from the camera.
There are no updates available for Lightroom 1.4.1 when I check.   Anyone else have this problem?  Is there a fix?
    Thanks,
    Justin

That means the camera is probably not supported on LR 1.4. You either upgrade to LR 2 (costs money), or you use the most recent (free) dng converter to convert your CR2 files to dng files. LR 1.4 will read those fine.

  • Getting "file appears to be unsupported or damaged" with 2.3

    All,
I recently switched my main photo machine from windows to mac. My main catalog is on an external USB hard drive. Now, when I open the catalog, most of the photos in the library view have the small "hazard" indicator that says that the file appears to be unsupported or damaged. All the photos in my catalog are either .dng or .jpg.
Is there any good reason why this would be the case?
    Thanks,
    -MrB

I have just had the same problem with version 2.5. The issue relates to permissions in the mac os. On my main mac the permissions were set so that only the administrator on that machine could read/write file. When image files were transferred to my macbook pro I could no longer edit the files hence the error message of the op. I changed the permissions on the main mac so that anyone could read/write the files and then moved them again with no further problem.

  • "File appears to be unsupported or damaged" - possible to resync backups to catalogue treatments?

Been using Lightroom no problems for a year or so now, but today after importing about 1000 new pix I started getting this error on many, many of the new ones "File appears to be unsupported or damaged"... Started checking back on good files that I'd worked with yesterday and they started showing thie same error... I went back through the 20,000 in the catalogue and most of my pic are showing the error, tho there are random ones that appear ok.
I started a new catalogue and tried to import some of those file that were showing the problem, but no go... I think the drive may be dying or some kind of mass corruption as occured, tho I'm no techie. If I'm wrong and there a way to restore order please tell me.
Luckly I'd recently backed-up most of my pix t another drive, tho last month will be lost, and I'm wondering if theres a way to sync up the back-up pix so that all the treatments, etc., done on the originals can be reapplied or do I just have to start from scratch?

Here's an experiment to try. Do this with ONE photograph.
Identify a "corrupted" photo, where LR gives you the error message. Find its backup on the other drive, and replace the original with the backup. (This should be a copy of the backup, not a move of the backup).
Then, go into LR and see if the error has gone away for this photo.
I agree, it sounds like your original drive is having a problem, if necessary, we can provide instructions on how to fix the entire mess, or to temporarily use the backup drive.

  • Roundtripping to PSE: "the file appears to be unsupported or damaged"

    Hi all,
After using Aperture for four years, I thought I would give Lightroom another try.  With Lightroom 5 and Photoshop Elements 11, when I roundtrip an image to PSE, it comes back to Lightroom, but I get a warning that says "the file appears to be unsupported or damaged."   I'm on a MacBook Pro (2010) with Mavericks and all the updates.
Somewhere in setting up Lightroom, it suggested working in 16-bits, but my PSE says it can only deal with images in 8-bits.  Is that part of the problem?
Many thanks for any help, experience, or advice.

    OSX 10.8.5   Lr5.3
I had this same problem with TIFF's in LR5.3  using Elements 11 and I didn't in the past.  I did some messing around and when I changed the tiff compression in the Lr export from ZIP to NONE the problem went completely away.  I didn't want ZIP anyway and I think it got automatically changed in an upgrade of Lr or Elements.  I did notice that SOMETIMES if I clicked away from the file with the error and then back a few times the file will load.
You are correct that only a subset of Elements functions work using 16bit  tiffs.

  • PLEASE HELP me-  LR3 such as:  The file appears to be unsupported or damaged.  What do I need to do?

Someone PLEASE HELP me…. I just copied many folders of files from one external hard drive to another, now I'm receiving messages (LR3)  such as:  The file appears to be unsupported or damaged.  What do I need to do to fix this?
Is there a PHONE number I can call to TALK to someone live??

You can upgrade to LR 3.6 at Product updates
My advice is to stop listening to Matt Kloskowski ... but nevertheless ... what he explained, dragging and dropping a folder to another hard disk, works as long as you are meticulous and never forget to do so. And if you're not meticulous about it (and most people probably aren't), then you don't have backups. The best way (and in my opinion ONLY way that works) is to use third-party software that will perform the backups of your photos and your catalog file automatically and regularly (every day or every week). The built-in catalog backup in Lightroom is an excellent way to back-up your catalog file, but it will not make backups of your photos.
