Unsupported Printer (Samsung ML-1710, ML-1430)

How do I get my printers to work on my MacBook? I have a Samsung ML-1710 and Samsung ML-1430. Samsung doesn't have drivers for the intel macs.
Would gimp-print or guten-print do the job? I'm not sure if they're universal binary yet.

You can find an open source printer driver for both by going here and looking up each printer Printer Database, then read the notes and download the driver and install it.
It looks like you also need to download the Samsung Drivers package(which doesn't include the drivers for your printer), because it has other things in it which the drivers depend on to work properly.
Do that, follow the directions and with any luck you should be able to use those two printers. Printer drivers are not executable code, they're just ASCII text commands, so they aren't PPC or Intel-specific.
Hope this helps,
Mulder

  • Can no longer print to Samsung ML-1710 (since 10.4.6)

Simply put, my Samsung ML-1710 no longer appears as an available USB printer in the list. It's essentially as though it does not exist.
The issue has come up since I updated my machine to 10.4.6
    (2006-05-16 19:38:20 -0400: Installed "Security Update 2006-003 (PowerPC)" (1.0))
I've tried reinstalling the "Samsung SPL2" pack, with nothing to show for it.
    Any thoughts?
    Dan

Well, just fixed my own problem. In despair, I tried a few hints found in other threads.
I ran the trial version of Printer Setup Repair 5.0.5 (Tiger Edition) downloaded from http://fixamacsoftware.com/software/psr5/ (thanks PAHU!), then turned my printer off and back on, and there you go. The printer once again showed up in the printer list and all is well.
So, not sure if it was the permissions issue or the on/off that fixed the problem, but thought I'd share it back with you.
    Cheers,
    Dan

  • Printing not working - 10.4.10 to Samsung ML-1710 (USB)

Sometime around my upgrade to OS 10.4.10, printing broke to my normally reliable Samsung ML-1710, connected via USB to my Mac Pro.
What happens now is that if I go into Printer Setup Utility, the ML-1710 shows up in the list, but when I click Add, I get a strange error: "An error occurred while trying to add the selected printer. service-error-service unavailable."
I've tried all the usual troubleshooting things: repairing permissions, running OnyX to flush all caches, reinstalling Samsung's drivers, rebooting, powering the printer up and down, etc. The printer is seen normally by System Profiler, but Printer Setup Utility refuses to add it.
I should admit that I've installed several aftermarket printer-related utilities in an effort to get this to work: Gimp-Print, CUPS, GutenPrint, ESP, etc. Latest version of each of these. None of them help. But I also don't know how to uninstall each of them. I have no idea if this might be confusing the Mac, and no idea how to get the Mac back to its default state so I can simply print via USB again.
    Any tips? (Desperate!)
P.S. One other related (?) thing I should mention that in System Prefs > Sharing, Printer Sharing is switched on. But when I click it, nothing happens -- I can't switch it off. I don't know how to force it off, and don't know if it might have anything to do with the failure to be able to add the Samsung as a valid printer.

If you updated CUPS to one of the publicly released new versions then you may very well find printing no longer works. I had the same problem when I did a CUPS update. Unfortunately, simply reinstalling the version provided with OS X wasn't possible because that version wasn't available for downloading.
So, the 'bad' news is you should reinstall OS X. You can avoid erasing the drive by doing an Archive and Install:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • My printer (Samsung 1740).

I recently decommissioned an Airport extreme. My printer (Samsung 1740) now does not work. it was going via the airport extreme in the past.
Now I can not seem be able to load a driver for it. From memory I used a 1750 driver as this was the closest available and it worked fine, but now it does not. Any ideas?

just a few thoughts: This is a straight 1740, right?. I'm guessing you used the usb port on the airport extreme. So... under Preferences, Printing and Fax, get to the Printer part then option click on the plus and reset printer system. You can try downloading a driver here:
    http://www.samsung.com/au/support/detail/supportPrdDetail.do?menu=SP01&prd_ia_cd =&prd_mdl_cd=&prd_mdl_name=ML-1740
Download the link near the bottom of the driver tab that has the file WebLBP_SPL2.zip (Version 0.97, 04 Dec 2008). That will work for the 1710, 1740, and 1750 in 10.6 and 10.7. :-)
as far as I know, get the driver or try gutenprint, and reinstall from scratch, then go to print and fax prefs and add a printer there.  If you ran the Samsung uninstaller, then that's it. also, try rebooting, turning off your printer, then after you computer has rebooted, turn your printer on again, and see if that helps
you may also have to change the location you print from, if that makes any sense. Your mac is looking for your printer  at "airport extreme" , and as it is not longer there.......

  • How To Set Up Your Unsupported Printer

I managed to get my unsupported printer working, and I'd thought I'd share my experience.
This guide will help you achieve:
    Installation of unsupported printers.
Setup of "print services" on network.
A litte background: I have an Okidata C3200n, it's a GDI printer, and relies heavily on the manufacturer dirvers to function correctly on any operating system. Unfortunately for me (and many others) it seems that Okidata has been dragging their feet when it came to publishing drivers in preparation for Lion. They sent out an official announcement (OKI Printer Driver Compatibility with Mac OS X Lion - Revision 1.6) which details expected release dates for various printers. Mine won't be until mid-December, or so. Major bummer there. I use this printer for my daily business in my company, and can't go without it for more than a few days, so waiting until December is clearly not an option.
Having experienced Okidata tech support in the past, and having worked with them to get my printer running on Linux before there was a Linux driver available, I decided to give them a call to see if they would have a work-around, perhaps with some opensource drivers, to tide users over until then. Their response was that I need to down-grade to Snow Leopard, or get a new printer. Some customer support that is. They drag their feet in developing drivers, then ask us to inconvenience ourselves until they get their act together -- not acceptable.
So, having been through this before in Ubuntu, I remember Foomatic CUPS print drivers. This is where the almost pain-less solution comes in. This process does involve some command-line work, but I'll try to spell everything out as clearly as possible here.
Log on to your LION server (or desktop, but in my situation I am setting up a network printer) using your admin account (I use Local Admin, but your setup may vary).
Download Foomatic-RIP and Ghostscript for Mac and install them: http://www.linuxfoundation.org/collaborate/workgroups/openprinting/macosx/foomat ic
    Locate your printer: http://www.openprinting.org/printers
If you printer page lists a driver for download, go ahead and install it. You should be good to go and the driver should be available to use on LION. If your printer lists a Filter (in my case foo2hiperc), continue reading.
Download WGET to your Downloads folder from here: http://www.techtach.org/wget-prebuilt-binary-for-mac-osx-lion.
Download and install Mac Ports from here: Mac Ports for Lion.
Download and install XCode from the AppStore: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/xcode/id448457090?mt=12
Open Terminal and enter the following:
    sudo port install gsed
    cd ~/Downloads
    wget -O foo2zjs.tar.gz http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/foo2zjs.tar.gz   sdff
    tar zxf foo2zjs.tar.gz
    cd foo2zjs
    make
sudo make install (you may need to enter your admin password at this time, it will prompt you if you do)
    sudo make cups
Now, if everything went well (if you didn't see any error messages), we're all done with command-line. Let's get your printer up and running. Open Safari and browse to http://localhost:631. This is your CUPS printer admin area (why Apple didn't make a full-fledged server admin GUI I have no idea). You may need to authenticate, again with your local admin user.
Click on the Administration tab, then click the Add Printer button.
Choose your printer. If it is not listed, select the appropriate protocol. (I like using IPP.)
If you selected a protocol, enter the destination details here. For example you may need to enter your printer's IP address. Then click Continue.
Now you can name your printer to something readable and friendly, as well as give it a location, if you have multiple printers in different rooms or buildings. Be sure to check "Share this printer." to make it available to all your networked LION client machines. Again, press Continue when ready.
On this screen you will be selecting the driver for your printer. Click the Select Other Manufacturer button, and select the manufacturer of your printer and hit Continue. You will now see a list of updated drivers. One of these should be the foomatic or foo2hiperc driver we just installed. Highlight the corresponding driver for your printer, and click the Add Printer button.
Lo and behold, you now have a networked printer set up on your server. I know what you're thinking now ... you're dreading having to do this on all of the client machines as well, right? Luckily, this is where I think the hidden genius of Apple lies. They know why they dropped support for custom drivers. By using CUPS server on the LION clients as well, they can speak to the server directly in CUPS native language, leaving the server to interpret how it needs to be sent to the printer. GENIUS!
You should now be able to scurry on over to your LION client machine and see the shared printer available to install. It will automatically install itself and the driver it needs without hastle.
I would like to give credit to my brother Sebastian Bronner, who helped me find the right resources. I put these steps together based on the instructions at http://www.linuxfoundation.org/collaborate/workgroups/openprinting/macosx/foomat ic and http://foo2hiperc.rkkda.com/, made available by the OpenSource community.
Please let me know if you have any issues or questions, and if this solution helped you.
    Best of luck,
    ~Mike

Thanks for this - I also have an OKI (a C5500) and this is a Godsend as I would struggle to replace it.
    A couple of comments:
Points 6 and 7 should be switched - MacPorts wouldn't install until XCode was installed. You my also want to expand the XCode instructions to say that the App Store link downloads the installer and that you need to go into Launchpad and run it to fully install XCode.
The gsed installation also popped up and asked me to install Java (through Software Update). I did this and the installation of gsed continued and completed succesfully.
If wget is in the Downloads folder, the command you have to use it in point 8 should be prefaced with ./ as it's the local folder it will run from.
You have an extraneous line right below the wget command (sdff).
Otherwise, this is a really excellent procedure.
    Many thanks,
    Des

  • Airport express  and printer samsung ml 1670 connection problem

    Hallo.
I'm trying to set up my printer Samsung ML-1670 on my network linking it directly on my Airport Express Base Station.
I've already tried the printer connecting it directly to my pc via usb port and it works. The Bonjour software recognize it correctly and install it on my pc. When I print the error message is: "The Port is not connected. Check it."
I've already tried to check the windows firewall settings to be sure the port is open. I switched it off to be sure but no changes.
I've tried the configuration via "add printer" feature directly, via Bonjour: no result.
Furthermore my iPhone doesn't see the printer as well, even if connected to the base and switched on.
    Any help?
    Thanks in advance.
    Claudio

Bonjour is the new name for Rendezvous.
    10.3 still refers to Rendezvous.

  • 7.3.1 killed wireless printing (Samsung ML-2510)

OK. It looks like 7.3.1 has killed my wireless printing.
If I attempt to print anything it takes several min for anything to print. When it finally does i get this page that says "Internal error - False"
I have A Mac Pro, A Mac Book Air, and a mac mini. The printer works fine when connected directly to any of these three systems. When it's connected either of my Airport Base Station Extreme(n) routers (Original and Gigabit versions) I get the problem above.
I don't think this is a Drive issue or a Samsung issue. This printer worked just fine before the 7.3.1 update. All my systems are running OS X 10.5.2 with all updates. The printer was working before the 7.3.1 update.
Is this a know issue? any plans to fix this? where can iI report this directly to apple?

    Hi,
no solution but same issue to report.
I migrated our imac G5 from Panther (yes, you read it correctly) to Leopard (with all updates) and boom no more wireless printing. Same Printer, same error message : ML-2510, "Internal error...". It works fine if plugged directly via USB but the airport express device is useless for now
Come on Apple, fix it. We have a bug here, right ?

  • Samsung ML-1710 and 10.4.8

I installed the driver from Samsung Australia, but when the printer doesn't show up in Printer Setup. In fact, the alleged USB menu (according to Samsung Australia's website) doesn't show up. My Epson printer connects fine to the USB port. Any clues?

Well, just fixed my own problem. In despair, I tried a few hints found in other threads.
I ran the trial version of Printer Setup Repair 5.0.5 (Tiger Edition) downloaded from http://fixamacsoftware.com/software/psr5/ (thanks PAHU!), then turned my printer off and back on, and there you go. The printer once again showed up in the printer list and all is well.
So, not sure if it was the permissions issue or the on/off that fixed the problem, but thought I'd share it back with you.

  • Error Adding Printer Samsung CLX-3180 Series OSX 10.9

MacBook Pro Retinta Display OS X 10.9.4 8 G RAM; 2 GHz Intel Core
I am having troubling adding a printer to my recently purchased Macbook
I downloaded the drivers from the Samsung website for the CLX-3180 Series, the software installs (at least it says it did).
I then go to add printer under printers/scanners and select Samsung CLX-3180 Series from the window. Messages indicate that the software was downloaded and updated and then I get the message "An error occurred while trying to add the selected device; Unable to find an appropriate software on your system after running software update."
I then reset the printer system, update the system software, restarted the laptop and tried again; still get the same error message.
No clue what to do next.

  • Airport Extreme: Printer (Samsung CLP-500) Problem

Sometimes my Airport Extreme doesn't find my USB-printer (a samsung clp500 laserprinter) anymore. The only way to solve this problem is to restart the airport. I have already installed the latest firmware of the airport but this didn't help. This happens at random.
Are there people who have had the same problem? And does anyone know a solution for this problem?

Yes, it turns to sleep. But thats not the cause, already tried it.
Could it be that when you connect the printer you cannot turn it off? Because the problem only occurs when i have turned off the printer and turn it back on. In 2/10 cases this will hapen.
So when I let my printer on and let him sleep the problem doesn't happen.

  • [printer] Samsung ML-2010 [RESOLVED]

    Good morning!
I was tryng to use my b/w laser printer on my Mac Mini with OSX 10.5.8
Driver are nor available on Leopard and I've had to download them from Samsung site. The printer model is ML-2010.
Driver installation is simple and clear but no response from the printer. Only daemon CUPS said "/Library/Printers/Samsung/ML-2010/rastertosec failed".
Thanks to this link of Gary Park:

    Hi
Thank you for your response I have sorted out the problem.
I noticed it just after I posted and so I must apologise for wasting your time. It was indeed a the, er, hardware connection from the printer to the computer…
    I hadn't plugged it in!
I'd thought I had but there's a bunch of USB cables at the back of the iMac and I'd plugged in the wrong one

  • HT2693 My iPhone & iPad can't recognize my airprint compatible printer. My printer: Samsung SCX-3405 HW. Any one help me??

My printer is Samsung SCX-3405 HW that is airprint compatible.
But my iPhone & iPad can not recognize it.!
    Help me please. What's wrong?!
    Thank you

I've just installed this printer and enabled - everything is working on airprint with my iPad2, iPad Air, Macbook and Mac Mini.
The trick was to connect to the printer's wireless network directly (the direct connect box must be clicked when you're setting up with a USB connection) first.  The next time I tried to find the airprint printer, it was there.
There is a password associated to the printer's direct connect network as well (setup utility gives you this).  I'm guessing that once it's in the keychain for the device, it can find it and connect to it.
Anyway - this should solve the mystery.  It's all installed and working.  I didn't have to do a firmware upgrade (not available except as a windows.exe file), but I did install the latest driver off of the support community.  I couldn't get the scanner to work until the driver was up to date.
I'm running OSX 10.9, printer is Samsung SCX-3405FW, iPad software is latest on both iPads.
