Unsure with airport and network

Hi all,
Basically my powerbook never came with an airport card (i'm sure it wasn't supposed to?), and when I go home I want to connect to my parents wireless network.
I'm unsure of what I need to buy, for instance would an airport extreme card work with my mac:
Machine Name: PowerBook G4 12"
Machine Model: PowerBook6,1
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (3.3)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 867 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
Memory: 256 MB
Bus Speed: 133 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.5.5f4
And as such I can try it out in my student union but won't be able to set it up at home until I get back to spain. So at the moment, it is really just knowing what to buy?
Thanks!
Miss T

Hi there.
ALL 12-inch PowerBooks were Airport Extreme (802.11g) ready. Airport Cards (802.11b) don't work with our machines. In fact, the last models to roll-off the line came with Airport Extreme already installed. The 867 MHz models had it as a build-to-order option.
Here are your options.
1) Get the darn card already!! =) It's only $29.99 at the Apple Store for a refurbished product.
Refurbished Airport Extreme Card: $29.99-- Apple Store
2) You can go third party, but at this point, you'll spend MORE money that that $29.99 refurb card from Apple. $35 on eBay if you don't get one from Apple in time. The only ones that I know work with computers that don't have a card slot are from:
Hawking Wireless, known for their under-publicized Mac compatibility (though not every product they make is compatible, just a select few)
The best of the best is MacSense, who make various Mac products not usually found at the big places like Apple, Best Buy, or CompUSA. They are found at Fry's Electronics and online resellers (sometimes, "mom and pop" Mac shops).
You'll want either of the AeroPad lines, which have USB 2.0 connectivity. (Unless you have a 15-inch PowerBook and posted on the 12-inch forum by mistake. Then you have some other choices out there, but you'll have to do some research as to which cards work, such as Belkin, Buffalo, etc.).
**Again, Apple themselves has it refurbished for only $29.99 Go for it already!
P.S. If you need help once you get home to your parents and try to connect there, let me know. I can try and help you with that too.

  • Trying to connect iBook with iMac with Airport and Ethernet

I have just purchased a wireless router, and all works fine connecting to the internet from the iBook (with Airport) and via an ethernet cable on the iMac.
To share files from the iMac on the iBook I have no problems when the two computers are connected with the Ethernet cable either directly or through the router. However, when I try to connect to the iMac from the iBook using Airport (iMac still connected with cable to router), although the iMac icon shows, when I press 'connect' I get the message "no response from the server. Please try again".
What else do I need to do / what settings on which computer do I need to alter? All advice gratefully received! iMac 9.2.2 / iBook G4 OS 10.3.9 Mac OS 9.2.x

Jaelke, Welcome to the discussion area!
More than likely your wireless router isn't bridging AppleTalk from the wireless network to the wireless network.
From your iBook, try typing in the IP address of the iMac when attempting to connect to the iMac.

  • Wireless networking with Airport and Windows

I have a MacBook Pro that is linked to my cable modem and Airport for wireless internet. I bought an old Dell desktop setup to integrate into the network.
When I install the pci card for wifi it says authorization has to come from the router of the network first. Can someone tell me how to do this?
The Dell has Windows XP and plenty of memory, etc.

no longer a concern; Dell computer and network were sold as I moved.

  • Unexpected restart link with airport and keychain

    HI,
I experience some unexpected restart of my Mac book pro when it's inactive (and only when it's inactive). There is not a single line in the system.log or console.log that match the time of reboot. I didn't find a reproducible way of making it happening. Nevertheless, when airport cannot connect to a gateway because the signal is marginal and make an error seems to increase the probability to experience such a feature. I'm of course not talking about a kernel panic. There is not a single clue before the restart! The hardware testing provided by apple on Mac OS X DVD and with the apple care plan does not detect any issue.
On top of that it seems that when it starts to happen, it will happen any time you will reach the screensaver or lock the computer, if the screensaver is password protected. Switching of this option is usually not enought and according an other article of this forum, I added in ~?Library/preferences a com.apple.screensaver.plist with 0 value to askForPassword
Repairing the permission seems to help sometimes as well. But there is no key way of getting rid of it.
Moreover, from time to time the additionnal plist file I said is removed by another process (I'm the only user of my laptop and it happens several time). But still nothing reproducible.
I tried to mesure the temperature and log it, and it's not increasing at the time of the crash, on the contrary.
so any idea to fix, or at least to force a higher level of logging is welcome

OK, I came up with at least a "hack" to get me back up and running for the moment. I have another user account "test" on my powerbook that is pretty much a vanilla new account. Whilst reviewing what files had been changed during the upgrade I became fairly convinced some form of bad XML configuration parameter(s) in file(s) contained in ~user/Library/Preferences were behind the loss of network connectivity. I logged out, then logged back in as my "test" user and networking worked flawlessly which seems to confirm that indeed the problem lies not in shared system directories but in user configuration data. Anyhow I logged into my normal account (top right screen corner) whilst still logged into my test account and now networking remained enabled and operational.
I'll report back if I work out how to clean up this mess properly.

  • Problems with AirPort and WPA access point

Okay, I have done quite a bit of research and I still cannot resolve my problem because of this, I am turning to this user community.
Here is what I know as of right now:
I am running Windows OS X 10.4.4 with AirPort Update 2005-001. My Access Point is a 3COM 8250.
The AP is setup not to broadcast its SSID, to use WPA-TKIP (or in Apple terminology, WPA Personal) and the password is set to use alphanumeric.
When I try to connect my PowerBook with the SSID name, WPA Personal and the correct password, I get the following error:
The password you entered is not correct for the Airport network *******.
To troubleshoot here are the test I have run and their outcomes:
    Test
    - Result
Set the AP to completely open
    - Connected
Set the AP to open, didn't broadcast the SSID
    - Connected
Set the AP to WEP, broadcast the SSID
    - Connected
Set the AP to WEP, didn't broadcast the SSID
    - Connected
Set the AP to WPA & WEP, broadcast the SSID
    - WEP : Connected
    - WPA : Not Connected
Set the AP to WPA & WEP, didn't broadcast SSID
    - WEP:Connected
    - WPA:Not Connected
Set the AP to WPA only
    - Not Connected.
Now, I should mention that when I was running 10.3.3 I could not connect either. The AP is running the newest firmware and I have three Windows XP SP2 laptops / workstations that can connect with no problems.
I have tried to find a compatibility matrix on both 3COM's and Apple's websites to see if it might be a compatibility issue but I have not been able to find one on either site.
Any help that anyone could provide would be greatly appreciate.
    Thanks in advance.

Hello MisssAsh. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
It's always a good idea to do a complete power recycle when changing network configurations.
Try the following, in order, checking for Internet access after each step, until resolved:
    1. If the modem has a reset switch, use it to reset the modem. Wait at least 5-10 minutes for the modem to initialize.
    2. Remove power from the modem. If it has a backup battery, remove this as well. Wait 5-10 minutes. Replace the battery, and add power back to the modem.
    3. Perform a complete power recycle of your network components as follows:
    Modem/Router Power Recycling - Quick
o Power-off the modem, AirPort Express Base Station (AX), & computer(s); Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the AX; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
If this fails to get the modem to "recognize" the Internet router, then try the "Full" version.
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling - Full
o Power-off the modem, AX, & computer(s). (Wait at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 15 minutes.
o Power-on the AX; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
    4. Contact your ISP to have them perform a "modem reset."

  • Printing with airport and iPad

I have not been successful using my airport and iPad to print. Any ideas?

Printing from an iPad or iPhone
To print directly from an iPad you need an AirPrint - enabled printer on the same wireless network as the iPad. All AirPrint printers are wireless but not all wireless printers are AirPrint-enabled.
If you do not have an AirPrint printer, a number of workarounds exist that enable the use of any printer you normally use, even older ones that may predate AirPrint by decades. Search for the following products:
    handyPrint (Mac only, donation-supported)
Printopia (Mac only, $19.95 with free trial)
These are utilities you install on the Mac you normally use for printing, enabling it to act as an AirPrint print server. The Mac must be "on" but may be asleep for them to work. The iPad needs nothing else, no iOS apps need to be installed and no configuration is necessary. If your computer can print, so can the iPad, using one of these utilities on your Mac.
Equivalent utilities may exist for PCs but you'll have to perform your own research.
There are also iOS apps available from printer manufacturers that enable printing directly from your iPad to selected printers. Search for them in the App Store.
You can also buy this standalone hardware print server, bypassing the need for a computer altogether:
    http://www.lantronix.com/it-management/xprintserver/xprintserver.html
Otherwise you will need to buy an AirPrint printer or multifunction device. I recommend AirPrint compatible Brother printers and multifunction devices over those of other manufacturers.
Read user reviews and choose wisely.

  • Extreme problems with airport and harddrive no pun intended. please help.

okay experts, please help. i have a lacie brick 500gb external drive that i got yesterday. i attatched it to the airport and the drive showed up on the desktop fine and dandy. the problem was that no backup software would recognize that a hard drive was attatched. i was given some advice to format the hard disk for apple using disk utility. i did that and it finished formatting this morning. (i had to do all this by plugging the hard drive in directly to the computer's usb port, it wouldn't let me do it attatched to the airport) now the dilemma is that when i attatch it to the airport, the disk no longer even shows up on the desktop, or anywhere else. wen i go to airport utility, manual setup and disks, it shows the hard drive there, but nowhere else. i know it isn't a problem with the hard drive because when plugged in directly to the computer, everything works fine. can someone please give me a run through of the settings i need to have set? i'm quite sure it is correct. i am just frustrated beyond belief getting this hard drive to work via the airport. thank you very much guys and gals.
    wait....update
okay. finally, it is on the desktop, but not how it should be. superduper or the lacie backup system still doesn't recognize it as a disk. when i plug in the h.d. to the computer usb port it shows up as an orange icon on the desktop and is recognized by the software. but when i plug it in via the airport it shows up on the desktop as a different icon, like a box and isn't recognized by the software. what on earth is going on?
    this is driving me mad.

You need to make sure that your backup software supports Bonjour(network attached) devices. I use the mac backup program and it recognizes AEBSn disk devices.
Can you copy a file manually from finder to the drive?

  • Problem with Airport wireless network utilising a Time Capsule. No internet connection?

Right, I have an Apple Mac and I am creating a Wireless network with an Apple Time Machine. I have had both devices for approx 2 years, they have be fine to date - until I now have the following issue: The Wirless network has been created and can be connected to but that network isn't then connected to the internet. IN have checked with the Cable network provider Virgin and there is a network without proplem provided to the Modem - I have also connected an ethernet cable to direct to the Mac and connected to the www, no probs. I have also asttempted to reset and set up my time capsule / airport again howver the same problem arises. When I go to network Diagnostics I Have a green light for the following; Airport, Airport Settigns, Network Settings,Network Settings, ISP then an amberlight for Internet and server.....Please assist!!!! Is this an ISP address issue. Welcome any help, Thanks in advance. Jimbob

    Sounds like chaos..
How many outlets are we talking about and what specific equipment?
Do you really need routers on every one? How many clients do you use?
Basically there are three non-overlapping channels on 2.4ghz.. using more than three routers in the house is pointless as they will just interfere with each other.. range on 2.4ghz should be sufficient to reach at least half a normal house from one AP. If not there are better high power routers available.
And there should be just one device that is the main router.. all the other routers should be bridged/ wan bypassed so they are merely AP and switch. Otherwise NAT will cause issues to devices stuck behind a secondary router.

  • Problems with Airport and Ethernet cable

    Hi
I wonder if anyone can help please, i have a really annoying little problem with my Airport Extreme. I use the internet either at my friends through his wireless internet or at an internet cafe via their ethernet cable.
Recently I keep getting an error message up every 20 seconds or so that says 'Could not find a PPPoE server' and i have to click connect in my built in ethernet settings before the cable or even the wireless internet connection works again and this is getting really frustrating. Is there any way to restore my internet connect settings so that using airport and plugging an ethernet cable in will be a bit more straight forward.
Any help that you can give me would be very much appreciated.
    Many Thanks

Is it possible that you have PPPoE enabled in either or both your AirPort and Built-in Ethernet settings on your Mac? If so, you should only need to disable them to remove this warning.
o AirPort: System Preferences > Network > Show > AirPort > PPPoE > Connect using PPPoE (disabled)
    o Built-in Ethernet: System Preferences > Network > Show > Built-in Ethernet > PPPoE > Connect using PPPoE (disabled)

  • Loss in communication with Airport and iTUNES stopping!

I have had a problem with iTUNES and my Airport Express since I first got them and it has been getting worst. There are two different, but perhaps related symptoms. The first is that everything is working fine and then the song stops playing. Sometimes only for a few seconds or sometimes indefinitely. The second problem is iTUNES can't connect with the Airport or losses the connection. This is especially confusing because the Airport is located only 4 feet away form the computer in a cabinet with my amplifier and home stereo.
My remedies vary form simply restarting iTUNES, running One Button Checkup on Norton Systemworks, rebooting Windows and/or turning power of at Airport.
iTUNES version 6.0.4.2, is running on an HP Pavilion ze5375, pentium 4 @ 2.4ghz with Windows XP Home edition. Airport Utility is version 4.2 and is connected by cable to a Sony stereo amplifier.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    hiya!
hmmmmm. is the Airport connection dropping at the same time as you get the songs stop playing on the PC?
if so, perhaps let's try attacking that issue first.
have you worked through the possibilities from this document?

  • Homehub 3 problems with wifi and network - please ...

I am hoping someone can help me, as I am struggling to work out why I am getting so many problems with my network at home.
I have BT Infinity, and a Homehub 3A. I have had BT broadband for years. Infinity was added in Feb 2013. The HH3A is the original one supplied to me years ago.
When Infinity was installed I also added a pair of TP Link powerline adapters, to provide a connection to an unmanaged network switch in the lounge.
A rough outline of what I have connected to the router is:
    Wired
    - Synology NAS Diskstation
    - Win7 laptop
    - powerline adapter
    Wifi
    - 3 iphones
    - 2 ipads
    - Win7 laptop
    - 2 Win Vista laptops
    Powerline / network switch
    - Sonos bridge
    - TV
    - BluRay
    - Vodafone booster
    - SkyHD
Recently I am getting a number of different problems:
    1) wifi drops to everything connected to the router, at the same time, all blue lights are on the router
I lose wifi connection to the internet, from all devices, at the same time, but also the connection from my laptop to the NAS drops.
    2) Anything connected to the Powerline adapter is rarely available
I try and connect to Sonos, or my sky box or the TV, but they aren't connected to the router. The lights on the powerline adapters indicate everything is fine, and the HH3 has all blue lights. But my iphone and laptop cannot find my Sonos. My iphone app cannot find my sky box. And on the TV it says it is not connected to the internet. To solve this problem I have to power cycle the pair of Powerline adapters.
    Some observations:
    1) these problems are all since Infinity was installed. I have no idea if that is relevant.
    2) My NAS Diskstation has a powersave mode. I noticed last night that when I woke it up, the powerline adapters disconnected briefly, before reconnecting. But when they did reconnect I could not access anything connected to them. It was as if the NAS had booted them off the network, and then they couldn't get back on.
    3) I run a 10m brand new Cat5e cable from the infinity modem to my router, because the modem is in the garage.
Can anyone help? I am tearing my hair out with this.
    Thanks for any help.

If you set the devices on the home hub to always use the same IP address, then that can help.
The problem is that when the DHCP lease expires, the home hub often gives the device a different IP address, and this breaks the port forwarding rules.
Some routers allow you to specify which IP addresses are to be reserved, but the home hub does not.

  • AOL causing problems with Airport and Mail

It's another reason to get rid of AOL, but my wife is still hooked... when her AOL is running on the iMac G5 connected to the DSL modem, other computers can't access the Internet over the Airport from this G5 (and for some reason, Mac Mail won't send e-mail). When AOL isn't running, the Airport and Mail problems are gone. (It took a while to figure out this was the problem!)
Does this problem have its root in the arcane world of sockets and ports? Or is there some AOL preference I can change to make it play nice with others?

I think it is simply how AOL works. If you log into AOL it only wants that one connection working.
The only router I know of that works with AOL is the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS). I suggest that you get an AEBS and use that to share the connection instead of your iMac G5.

  • AirPort Basis Staion with BroadBand and Network with 2  Airport Express

    Strange Phenomena
We can log into Internet through the Base Station without any problem and connect to more than one Mac. But the moment we set up a bridge between the BS and the AP Expr. we can only either connect to the InterNet or use it as a network but not both. It worked for months fine but now neither of the AP Expr will do both. We have tried another BS to no avail. Does anybody no this problem is it maybe after a System Update? Our customer is getting mad as he cannot get it to work He had the BS steup and both Express's setup to be Bridges (WDS) and all worked then suddenly from one day to the next no more.It doesn't matter how you configure the Express it will tell you that it cannot start a remote connection to the BS. All very Strange

Hello macfar14. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
For just streaming iTunes and/or for sharing a USB printer, the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) just needs to be configured as a wireless client ... which you already attempted to do.
Just to be sure nothing was missed, here are the basic steps to do this:
Either connect to the AX's wireless network or connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then using the AirPort Utility in "Manual Setup" mode, make the following changes:
    AirPort > Wireless
o Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
o Network Name: <existing wireless network's Network Name or SSID>
o Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
o Wireless Password: <enter the existing wireless network password>
o Verify Password: <re-enter the existing wireless network password>
    Music
    o Enable AirTunes (checked)
o iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
    o iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
    o Verify Password: (optional)
o Click Update to write the new settings to the AX
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

  • Airport and network problems after recent update

I want to know if someone is aware of what went wrong with the latest OS updates, all my computers forget my local wireless connection and sometimes I'm connected to my co-workers unprotected red. Airport just won't do its job.
This issue is really frustrating since several applications like Flash for example give you and error when saving a file after reconnecting to your network after a network loss.
If someone knows how to work this around to stop this annoying behavior please advise, I'm sure I am not the only one experiencing this.

    Dear Eyewake,
I have had the same problem recently, after QuickTime 7.1.1 upgrade. The only way I can now get wireless access is to leave the network unprotected at factory settings. At least one other person posting to this discussion list has this problem in the last week, but no replies.
Do you know where else we can try to get help?
