Untangling Mavericks from iCloud

I recently updated our Macs from Snow Leopard (10.6.8) to Mavericks (10.9.x). We had skipped Lion and Mountain Lion due to their heavy iCloud entanglement. iCloud syncing is a handy tool for on-the-go metropolitans with high bandwidth, symmetrical internet access and/or abundant free WiFi locations. But for those of us who live in the country, with our only choice being low bandwidth asymmetrical (often capped) internet access, iCloud syncing of photo streams and data is a cruel, have-vs-have-not, joke. Besides, I’ve never thought it was all that clever to share/sync files, calendars, contacts, notes between two Macs attached to the same private WiFi network by pushing the data to/from the cloud.
So as soon as I did the clean install of Mavericks, I began looking for how to untangle Mavericks (and iOS 7) from iCloud. The following tables summarize what I did. If anyone is interested in the details, just ask.
Minimize iCloud Entanglement in OS X
iMac & MacBook Pro
Internet Accounts
Turn off iCloud sharing (except Mail)
  Sync Mail
Use IMAP Mail servers (iCloud & gmail)
Sharing/Syncing (local network only)
Install OS X server and set up...
  Files
File Sharing
  Calendar
CalDav
  Contacts
CardDav
  Notes
Mail server (used only for Notes)
Sharing/Syncing (via iCloud)
  Photos
Limited use of small Shared Photo Streams*
Apple’s “iCloud” Applications:
(e.g. TextEdit, Preview,…)
  Open/save dialogs
Turn off iCloud saving in iCloud sys pref
Missing menu item for “Save As…”
Add keyboard shortcut (shift-command-s)
Minimize iCloud Entanglement in iOS
iPad Mini & iPhone 5s
Sync Mail
Use IMAP Mail servers (as above)
Sharing/Syncing (local network only)
  Calendars, Contacts, Notes
Use local OSX server (as above)
Sharing/Syncing (via iCloud)
  Photos
Limited use of small Shared Photo Streams*
Backups
Manually backup to Macs
*Apple’s existing iOS tools (Photos and iPhoto) for organizing photos into albums and then syncing them with Macs are pitifully inadequate. For us, the simplest method is to build an album on a Mac in iPhoto and share it with our other Mac and iOS devices via a Shared Photo Stream. Even this limited use of the iCloud has drawbacks. Like when we brought the new iPhone 5s home and it brought our internet connection to it’s knees for several hours while downloading the Shared Photo Streams in the background.

The reasons to untangle Mavericks from the clouds fall into two main categories:
Practical - reduced use of iCloud services which can use considerable bandwidth (e.g. Photo Streams) and/or use bandwidth at inconvenient  times (e.g. App Store update downloads in the background).
Several items are quick and easy settings within Mavericks/iOS 7 which address the more “practical” aspects.
Photo Streams - If you take a lot of photos and have several iOS and OS X devices, My Photo Streams can be a serious bandwidth hog. You can turn them off in OSX - iPhoto>Preferences>iCloud and iOS Settings>iCloud.>Photos
App store background updates - You can’t reduce the bandwidth required to download the updates. But you can control WHEN that bandwidth is used by setting the App Store preferences which are found in….  System Preferences.
iOS Backups - You can reduce the bandwidth required to backup your iOS devices to the iCloud by adjusting which items are backed up to iCloud - Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage>[pick your iOS device]. Then periodically backup your iOS devices manually in iTunes.
Apple’s “iCloud Apps” (e.g. Textedit, Preview, iMovie, iWorks apps etc) - in OSX you can turn off storing/syncing via iCloud by adjusting the settings in…. System Preferences>iCloud>Documents & Data. In iOS you adjust these in Settings>[scroll to the application name]>Use iCloud
Philosophical - replacing iCloud services (e.g. syncing/sharing of Contacts, Calendars, Notes, etc.) with local services to enhance privacy and possibly improve performance, depending on internet bandwidth / caps.
Here are some things to consider before replacing iCloud services with local ones provided by OSXServer.
Setting up an OSXserver to share/sync Calendars, Contacts, Notes, etc. will not dramatically reduce your internet bandwidth.
The key component OSXserver costs $20 and requires a Mac that is running 24/7/365 (e.g. a headless Mac Mini). OSxserver does NOT require a dedicated Mac. It can run on a “users” Mac (e.g. an iMac). But that user has to be mindful to not disrupt services with frequent/unannounced Restarts (e.g. as required by some software updates).
The local shared services (syncing contacts/calendar, file sharing, etc.) only work when you are connected to your local WiFi network. For example, if you add a Contact, make a Note or add a Calendar item on your iPhone while at the dentist, they will not get synced to your Mac/iPad until you get back home.
Setting up an OSXServer for syncing sharing, Contacts, Calendars, Notes, and Files is not difficult. But it requires a bit of planning to configure user accounts etc., so that it is easy to configure/administer the iOS and OSX devices. And of course you become the systems administrator for the OSXserver. Sharing/syncing Contacts, Calendars, Notes via OSXserver rather than iCloud will not reduce significant internet traffic/bandwidth. The main reason to switch to OSXserver is philosophical.
Apple’s iWork apps (Pages, Numbers, Keynote) are difficult to untangle from iCloud. OSX server does support Webdav for “sharing” iWork app files between users/devices. But this is not the same a live syncing via iCloud.
Finally, the actual untangling takes some planning to extract the contacts and calendar info from iCloud and transfer it to calDAV and cardDAV on OSXserver.
Are you after the “practical” or “philosophical” or both?

  • Mavericks (10.9.2) notes unable to update notes from iCloud

    Hi There!
I am using mavericks, I found out that my notes in mavericks is unable to update any notes from iCloud since I upgrade to 10.9.2.  Here I have tried out some of the method which I search from forum and Google.
    1. I have tried to sign out then sign in again from iCloud account in mavericks but won't resolve my problem.
    2. I have also tried to remove iCloud account then add them back but also won't work.
    3. Created new user account the login my iCloud account but with same result come up.
There is something strange that I realized when I am trying out the above mentioned methods, which is to create new note from mavericks notes app and it will update to my iCloud panel and it is updating to my iPad or iPhone. the only problem is all my notes in iCloud are unable to update to my mavericks notes app.  Calendar, Mail, Contacts, Reminder and others services are working fine but Notes.
    Is there any suggestion?
    Many thanks!
    KT

I'm having the same issue with the 10.9.2 update. Tried signing out of the account, removing the account, repairding disk permissions, etc, and still can't get my iCloud notes to sync to the Notes application. The notes are on the iCloud website and sync correctly to my iPhone.

  • Pages will not open from iCloud since Maverick update

Pages will not open from iCloud since Maverick update

I have a similar problem.  I upgrated to Maverick a couple weeks ago and at that time I saw a very different appearance to my Pages documents, especially my book lists.  Numbers appeared at the left side of the pages.  All seemed well.  Now the last few times I've tried to open those documents, I get the message that "YOU NEED A NEWER VERSION OF PAGES TO OPEN THIS DOCUMENT.  YOU CAN DOWNLOAD THE LATEST VERSION OF PAGES FROM THE MAC APP STORE".  I can't figure out how or why the version reverted back to the way it was.  That message doesn't always come though.  Some documents I can open but some I can't open at all.  If I click LEARN MORE, I am directed to the APP STORE where I can buy Pages 5.0.1 for $19.99!!!!!  What the heck is going on?????  Am I going to have to pay for pages where Maverick was FREE.

I had this problem after updating too. On my Mac, I went into System Preferences>ICloud> and unchecked Notes. Then I restarted my computer and went back to System Preferences and checked Notes. The sync worked fine after that (at least for now!). Must be a bug in the update. Hope this works for you too.

  • I can't get pages 5.01 to open pages files from iCloud, although they open in iCloud Pages without difficulty.

I can't get Pages 5.01 to open Pages files from iCloud, although they open in iCloud Pages without difficulty.
I am using the most up to date version of Mavericks and Pages and can log into iCloud without any problems.  Is this just a glitch?  The files all behaved properly under previous versions and the initial release of the new version of Pages.

Pages for iCloud beta is a weird beast and as it says "beta".
I think it is the least compatible of all the many different .pages files floating around out there.

  • Upgraded to Mavericks - and iCloud.   Calendar will not stop 'updating' - and has not synced all entries across all devices/calendars.

    Hello Apple Support Community;
I am looking for some help on several matters related to my upgrade to OS X Mavericks this week.   THIS issue is one related to CALENDAR.
I believe that I have done everything (as instructed) to install, activate, and sync contacts and calendars via iCloud - immediately following my upgrade to Mavericks earlier this week.   When I opened CALENDAR for the first time - from the Dock on my computer (not the iCloud calendar) - after upgrading to Mavericks and setting up iCloud - CALENDAR provided a pop-up notification stating "Moving calendars to server account..." with a moving "candy cane" progress bar.
This has been "updating" for about 12 hours, now.   And while open and "updating" - it will not allow ANY other commands, scrolling, or menu options.   Additionally, I am unable to close this calendar of the Mac, unless I 'Force Quit'.   I have, in fact, executed Force Quit, and restarted the Mac.   No change... it still "updates".
When I open the iCloud calendar - it opens and works (mostly).   There are events on my iPhone 5 that are not on the iCloud calendar.   And there are events on the iCloud calendar that are not on my iPhone.   I have created new calendar events on each calendar account (iCloud on my Mac and iPhone 5) - and they seem to automatically update each device.   There does not seem to be any obviously rationale for the inconsistency of the calendar (iCloud and iPhone).
Can you offer ideas for possible solutions to:
    1)  the "permanently updating" calendar from the Dock on my Mac?
    2)  ensure that all events are properly synced across all calendar accounts (and devices)?
    THANK YOU!!

Hello Phil... I got nothing from the Apple Communities.   May have been very hard to diagnose via my description - or hard to resolve given many possible solutions.
The perpetually updating scroll-bar-of-death continued for about a week.
I DID (finally) get resolution from the Genius Bar in my local Apple Store.   They deleted all prior "local" calendar back-ups and content - as I had my Calendar up on iCloud - which essentially "reset" the calendar function... and then reloaded the calendar, and then pulled in my calendar data from iCloud.
They twisted and tweaked a few more things that I was not able to follow (sorry I cannot offer more assistance on these other things).
    They also reloaded Mavericks.
Everything seems to be working well now.
Apple Community... any more guidance for Phil - and others???
    Good luck, Phil.

  • ITunes Match unable to download songs from iCloud issue

I have a MacBook Pro running Mavericks 10.9.4 and iTunes 11.3.1. I am having repeated issues with downloading songs from iCloud to my MBP. I have reset Match numerous times using the steps located here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4054.
Then it works for a short time and I am able to download some songs and then suddenly I will get the pinwheel, the songs in iCloud will all show greyed out and then I am no longer able to download anymore. Repeat process.
I am about to try a test tethering to my iPhone's internet service to see if that improves things. So far, the only threads I have found on this topic have been related to Mountain Lion. So I'm not sure if this is a different issue I am seeing.
I also tried resetting the System Configuration to see if it would fix, but no luck: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4160355?start=90&tstart=0
Is anyone else experiencing this and what is the issue? Can it be fixed?

    Hi,
I don't think that you have a similar issue to OP.
    Mettelin wrote:
That means that iTunes Match is stripping out the Sample Rate when it uploads some tracks (even variable within albums) and then it gets stuck when you try to play the track.
    Apple needs to fix this.
Match does not strip out the Sample Rate. If tracks are matched, it shows the standard sample rate of 44,100 but unknown when tracks are uploaded (probably because Apple does not capture this on such tracks). If you have an iCloud status of "Waiting" and a blank sample rate, this suggests that the match / upload process was not completed.
If you have not already solved your problem, I suggest that you delete those tracks and then read them to your iTunes library. Once you have matched or uploaded them, you can delete from your hard drive but not the cloud.

  • I want to send PDF files to icloud from my PC , from  icloud to my iPad , then deleate file in icloud

I have a PC Windows 7 which I want to share files,PDF, with on my iPad Air WiFi New sept 2014,using iCloud, After sharing I want to erase the files from iCloud.  Later I want to share some files, PDF, from my iPad air back to my windows 7 PC.  Then again erase from icloud or iTunes, which ever is used.

That type of sharing between your PC and iOS devices using iCloud isn't possible until iCloud Drive is introduced later this year.  (It may be available for your iPad next week with the introduction of iOS 8, but the ability to access is on your PC may not be possible until OS X Mavericks is introduced later this year.)

  • Problem with transfer photos from iCloud to Aperture

Hi, I have a problem with APERTURE. I Can't transfer a photos from iCloud to project of Aperture. I have Macboook Pro 15, model 8,2 with MAC OS X Maverick and Aperture 3.5.1. Who can help me ? Many thanx.

If I want to work them I have to transport these photos to some folder or project in aperture but unurtenetly It doesn't work.
Now I see. You should be able to drag any image from your photo stream to a project (not to a folder).
    For example:
Or set your Aperture preferences to import automatically:
That will create monthly projects -
    Does that not work?

  • Can't open document in Numbers from iCloud

I can not open a numbers document from Icloud.  When I try to open the document, which is listed with other documents I get a message saying I must have the newest version of numbers.  I have already updated to Mavericks and the upgraded Numbers.  What can I do to access my document?

Finally found the problem.  I was opening the old version and found the newer version on launchpad.

  • TS4002 Can't sent email from iCloud mail iMac, due to exceeding daily limits. Haven't sent an email today. Works on iPhone, though.

Unable to send email message from iMac (os x Mavericks 10.9.4) from iCloud mail due to "exceeding daily sending limits". Have not sent any emails today. As a test, I emailed a message to myself using iCloud mail from iPhone. Able to open email on iMac, respond to that email and sent it without an error message.  But keep getting exceeding limits message with new email.

  • I cannot get my photos from iCloud to illustrator

they have been saved in an album which does not show up when i select photos and they did not upload to iCloud when i synced my photos i had to import manually. How would i go about saving the photos from iCloud to my documents or finding the file under the photos option?

For Mavericks you need to upgrade to iPhoto 9.5.1.
You cannot buy this version from the AppStore, since the current version is iPhoto 9.6, and that requires Yosemite. The easiest route for you would be to upgrade to Yosemite. Then you can simply buy the newest version of iPhoto from the App Store and can use iCloud Photo Library (iCloud Photo Library beta FAQ), once it has been release for the Mac as well early next year.
If you want to stick with Mavericks, you'll have limited iCloud features, only the Photo Streams  (iCloud: iCloud Photo Sharing FAQ), but no iCloud Drive (iCloud Drive FAQ) and iCloud Photo Library.  And to upgrade iPhoto you need to buy an iPhoto '11 installer. It comes as part of iLife '11. You can try to buy a boxed version from Amazon or try to find it at eBay.  Once installed on Mavericks, download the iPhoto '11 updaters from the apple Support Downloads page.

  • Deleting songs from iCloud seems to not be working for me?

    Hello,
I'm having a huge problem currently. I have read the faqs on "How to delete songs from iCloud?" and understand it perfectly. But tonight I'm trying to delete this album out off my computer and it was deleted because I seen the album go straight to the trash. I emptied the trash can and for some reason when I go to click "Update iTunes Match". The album I deleted pops back up via iCloud. Now I then deleted that hoping the songs would delete from the iCloud also. Well loe and behold the songs came back again via iCloud. These aren't purchases made via iTunes. These are songs I've uploaded using a purchased music CD from Best Buy. And they seem to not be able to leave iCloud for some reason. No matter how many times I have to delete them.
Is there any way around this?
I have iTunes Match and I'm using a MacBook Pro (OS Mavericks).

    Hello Kitkat1017,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
From your post it appears that you are both logged in to the same Apple ID in your Messages settings, which would cause you to get the same messages on both devices.  If you select "Send & Recieve" in your Messages settings, you will likely see the same Apple ID logged in on both devices.

  • Impossible to delete POP accounts from iCloud keychain and SMTP not working

    Hello,
After an aborted Mavericks clean install, I reverted to Mountain Lion via Time Machine and started experimenting with iCloud Keychain on Mavericks using trashable Virtual Machines.
I am hitting two serious problems with email accounts :
    1. I turned on iCloud keychain ONLY on my Mavericks test installs (not on my iOS device)
    2. First time I turned it on and used my usual AppleID, the test install retrieved all my email accounts (I have many of all types)
    3. I could not make password SMTPS work on any IMAP accounts, so I decided to delete ALL email accounts from my iCloud Keychain
    4. When you ask to delete an email account, it asks if you want to delete it from ALL your accounts, whoch is what I did (make a clean slate)
    5. Of all the accounts I have, I have two old disabled POP3 accounts. I deleted them as every other one (including FB, Twitter, LinkedIN, Exchange, ...)
Every time I set up a new test install with iCloud keychain enabled, these two POP accounts continue to show up on the list.
Every time I delete them again from ALL keychains they disappear, but anytime I launch Mail they come back, and if I delete them again, and then I add a new email account they come back.
No way to delete them from ALL keychains
And BTW user/password SMTP on SSL for IMAP accounts does not work for me. It fails all the times on my postfix server.
    So, my issues are :
    - iCloud keychains seems unstable with email accounts (probably with POP accounts only)
    - SMTP over SSL with user/password doesn't seem to work
Anybody hit the issue ? For me is a severe showstopper for Mavericks and iCloud keychains
    Best
    Luca

Restore it as new.  Why wouldn't you do that when purchasing a used device from another individual?

  • Can't access documents on iCloud /message from iCloud Drive

Does anyone have the same problem, I have not updated to iCloud Drive when asked, since Yosemite it is not available yet for everyone, and since we will not being able to open documents from prior systems (iOS7 or Mavericks). My iPhone has iOS 8, and my Mac Mavericks, if I use Numbers or Pages from the computer then it works, but if I try to open it from iCloud Apps instead, it shows me a message warning about this condition of iCloud Drive, so I chose NO, but instead of open the files, it goes to the home manu on iCloud, so no access allowed to the files stored on the iCloud apps from there. Any suggestion on this, I need to open a file from my other account not set up on this computer, before I used to use iCloud over the web, to access them....

iCloud does'nt store ALL of your photos, only 1000 max and it only has those that have been taken by a mobile device that's signed into your iCloud account and has Photo Stream activated or the those in your library if you have Photo Stream activated and set to automatically upload all new photos imported into your library (3rd checkbox).
However, there is a 1000 photo limit and they will be purged every 30 days.
I suggest you go into iPhoto's Accounts section and delete your iCloud account and log out of iCloud in the System/iCloud preference pane.  Then log back in and go back to iPhoto and add the iCloud account back.
    OT
