Unusual dashed box has replaced missing pictures in Iphoto after transfer...

Hello Mac community! I recently purchased a new macbook pro OS X (Mavericks version 10.9.2) and had the mac store transfer all of my iphotos etc. from my previous macbook pro to this new one. When opening iphoto on my new mac, the majority of my pictures in my iphoto library are missing, and a strange box of dashed lines has replaced them. What does this mean? Heres whats strange..Many of my pictures did indeed transfer properly to my new iphoto library but there are random events that are completly missing pictures ( being replaced by the dashed box) Why did these pictures not transfer properly to my new laptop? How can i recover these pictures? Thanks to anyone who is willing to help me! Im lost without my pictures!

really hard to say what was done wrong since we have no idea what was done
Do you still have the old computer? If so transfer the iPhoto library again properly - Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc)  or use an external hard drive formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.
That probably will fix things

  • Missing pictures in iPhoto after 10.6 to 10.7.5 upgrade

    Hello Everyone,
I was running 10.6 on my iMac 27" 3.06 GHz with iPhoto ('09 I guess ?) Backed up continuously with time machine.
The HD broke so the local store replaced the drive but pre-loaded 10.7.5 on it so when I backed up the whole uMac I ended up with 10.7.5 [side issue - I have no copy of 10.7.5 !].
Then I realised that for a few (apparently random) recent sets of images in iPhoto 8.1.2 the thumbnails were visible but the full size images were not. I tried a couple of the iPhoto "rebuild" options but now I cannot see these same sets of thumbnails at all. iPhoto cannot export them in any format
Its only a few sets so one option is to find the originals and re-import them - but I don't know where to find them in 10.7.5. (obviously search doesn't help !).
I still have a second copy of my entire iMac on a separate (also time machined) backup drive from when it was 10.6 - does that help me in some way ?
I hope that I've provided enough info for some constructive help.
    Thanks
    Steve

Connect the two Macs together and copy the library from your backup iMac backup and replace the existing library.  Then launch iPhoto with the Option key held down, select the newly copied library.
You should contact the store that installed 10.7.5 and ask for a Lion install disk.
If the orignals are still in the library but unavailable to iPhoto give this a go:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • I lost hundreds of pictures from iPhoto after upgrading to Mavericks

I lost hundreds of pictures from iphoto after upgrading to mavericks. does anyone know why or how to retrieve them. i cannot find them on time machine either.

    and
Why do you think you have lost "hundreds" of pictures?
    What exactly are you seeing
You can try Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library database

  • Error trying to send pictures in iPhoto after 10.5.6 update

After applying the 10.5.6 update (which did hang during it, forcing me to cycle power).
Any attempt to e-mail pictures from iPhoto gets this error:
"Mail got an error: AppleEvent handler failed". Only a cancel button to click.
    Anybody seen this?
    Thanks in advance.

    Richard,
In another topic, the poster had the same trouble with removing the flawed version of Mail. So as was required in that case, try deleting the Mail application from the Application folder -- this does not impact your Mail folder where the messages are stored. Of course you will have quit Mail before deleting the application.
Next, put in your Leopard installation disk (a DVD), and when it opens look for the folder with the name Optional Installs. Open that folder and scroll through the available applications for individual installation -- Mail will be one of them. Install Mail, but immediately install the Combo Update again before trying to launch Mail.

  • I uploaded a lot of important pictures to iPhoto, after downloading them I deleted them off my memory card. Now, iPhoto will not let me look at the pictures and the album in which I put them is empty. Where did they go? What should I do? Help please!

I uploaded a lot of important pictures to iPhoto, and then deleted them off my memory card. I tried looking at the pictures and they are no wheere to be found, the album in which they were is empty, and I looked everywhere for them. Where did they go? What should I do?

Check to make sure the iPhoto Advanced preferences are set to copy photos into the library when importing, i.e. a "managed" library:
If it is and you don't see any thumbnail in the Event they should be in apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with
Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
If you are unable to get iPhoto to recover the photos MediaRECOVER can be used on the memory card to recover the photos as long a they haven't been overwritten.  It will run in demo mode so you can see if it will recover the photo before you have to purchase it.

  • Missing iTunes 9 songs after transfer with SL Migration Assistant

I have a backup drive where I stored 82+ gigs of music, all imported from cd. They were saved using various versions of iTunes as AAC's. I transferred the Music folder from the external drive to a new iMac via OS 10.6.2 Migration Assistant.
I noticed this morning that some music was missing from the iTunes library that were still contained in my iPod... which I didn't sync! Whole artist folders are missing, some songs of other artists are gone. I lost 3+ gigs of music. I checked the new iTunes music folders, these artists and songs are not present.
Unfortunately, I didn't notice the difference in total storage when I opened iTunes after transfer, 8000+ songs, over 6 years of saving. And wiped the external drive and set it up as a clone backup for the new iMac.
The only factor I'm seeing is that every artist I've identified as being gone was a fairly recent save under iTunes 9. I've been doing a lot of saving over the last 3 months.
Anyone else losing MA transferred music with iTunes 9 and/or Snow Leopard?

    Hello there ronadrew,
It sounds like you 2 libraries of content you want to move over to your new computer. As far as your iTunes library is concerned, you can certainly use File Sharing as an option if you like but you have to modify folder permissions and access to do that. This article should help you do that, named:
OS X Yosemite: Share your files with other Mac users
If these computers are both connected to the network via Wi-Fi, it may be faster to copy the iTunes library to an external drive, then copy the library over to another computer using this article:
How to move your iTunes library to a new computer
As far as your Calibre library you may be able to use one of the above methods to copy your library over, but I would check with the support and/or documentation available from the developer for the best way to go about that.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Missing pictures in iPhoto

Today when I opened iPhoto it said it could not find the Library. When I searched for the Library I found that all the pictures in it were grayed out and cannot be accessed. What happened and how can I fix it, Thanks.

When I searched for the Library I found
that all the pictures in it were grayed out and
    cannot be accessed.
A big jump here... I assume you "searched" using the "Find Library" dialog, navigated in the dialog to the folder named "iPhoto Library" (unless you've moved and/or renamed it) in your Pictures folder, selected it, then iPhoto opened without any warning dialogs, all before you saw that all pictures were "grayed out".
Do any thumbnails appear? Does the albums pane show the albums you had previously assembled? Has anything "unusual" happened with your system between when iPhoto last functioned normally, and now?

  • Missing pictures in iPhoto feed

I went away on vacation and posted photos on a feed. When I came home and opened my iPhoto, the pictures in the feed are not there. I posted a photo as a test today and it went through to the feed ok. I tried restarting my computer, checking my settings, and connecting my phone. Still the group of photos while I was away are missing. Can anyone help with this issue. I am stumped!
    Thanks!

all pics from the same 'source' ... ?

  • Missing pictures from PhotoBooth after insatlling Leopard

I made a full backup to my Tiger system on my iMac, installed Leopard on a clean partition, copied back the pictures to the PhotoBooth library, but I can not view them, only new pictures taken after the Leopard.
    Any ideas?

    Thanks o8ber0n!
In 10.5 (and later) I see that the Recents.plist is now in ~/Library/Application Support/Photo Booth
So... for those of you having the same issue, to fix this first make a copy of your Recents.plist by doing the following (from Terminal):
    # cd /Users/username/Library/Application Support/Photo Booth/
    # cp Recents.plist Recents.plist_backup
Next, you'll want to generate a list of all of the photos/movies you have in your Photo Booth directory:
    # cd /Users/username/Pictures/Photo Booth
    # for file in *; do echo " <string>$file</string>"; done
Take the output from line above, copy it and paste it into the Recents.plist you made a backup of earlier. (replacing the existing <string> entries) I used nano from the command line, but you could use your favorite text editor to do the same. Save Recents.plist, fire up Photo Booth, and get back to the fun.
I love this Mac... and the collaborative effort here.

  • I cannot find my pictures in iphoto after downloading and delating from memory card....

I downloaded my pictures from memory card, and once it was done, iphoto asked me if I wanted to keep the pictures into the memory cart, I pressed no, and now I cannot find my pictures anywhere... Is there a way to find them back ?

    Hard to say
    Are they in last import?
do not use your memory card until you resolve this - you may want to use software like Media Recover to recover the images on the card
You can try Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library database
For the future a best practice to is to never have any computer program (including iPhoto) delete the photos from the card but to import the photos and keep them and then after at least one successful backup cycle has completed and then reformat the card --  I use three very large (32 GB) cards in rotation so I do not reformat for typically a year or more giving me one more long term backup of my photos

  • Missing movies in iPhoto after termination of the software during watching a movie

    Details:
OS X Version 10.8.5, Processor 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7, memory 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, storage capacity 250 GB
    iPhoto 11 Version 9.4.3 (720.91)
    Following has happened today:
After recording and transferring movies from the camera to iPhoto I have watched every transferred movie.
During watching the last movie (about 3 - 5 minutes) iPhoto has closed. I have rebooted the notebook about 3 times. The only thing still there are the 2 folders - but the imported movies are still missing. The program showes "0" entries.
I would be very grateful if the movies could be retrieved and perhaps the cause could be found.
    Thanks for helping in advance
    Angela

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Missing develop/history settings after transfer

I got a new computer, had to download another copy of lightroom 3.4 to it. Then started gradually moving images from my old computer (with lr 3.4) , to my new one, via an external hard drive. I have the images, but not the edited versions. All adjustments made in the develop module on the old computer are missing (b&w conversion, cropping, etc.) These are DNG images! I thought when you convert to DNG all the info stays with the file?

    Richard,
Assuming you still have access to your old computer, on your old computer:
    Open LR
Make sure your folder panel shows the folders in a hierarchical order and you have only one (or only a few) top-level folders shown (use "Add Parent Folder" if they are not shown)
    as in this example:
Edit -> Catalog Settings -> General Tab -> Location -> Show
This will point you to the folder your catalog resides in, the catalog name is shown in the General Tab under "File Name"
Copy the file [catalogname].lrcat (and the folder "[catalogname] Previews.lrdata" if you have time) to your new computer. If you do not copy the Previews, you can rebuild them on the new computer later, if you copy them as well, you save that work
Copy your originals from the old to the new computer, retaining the folder structure the same as on the old computer (copy the one or few top-level folders)
Double click the copied [catalogname].lrcat file on the new computer to start LR
If your original images on the new computer reside in the same folder structure as on the old computer, and the drive they reside on has the same drive letter assigned, you're all set
If the drive the originals reside on has a different drive letter assigned than on the old system, all the folders will show a "?" indicating missing
right click on a top-level folder showing the "?"
    do "Find missing Folder"
point to the folder on the new HDD the folder resides on
this will reconnect all sub-folders as well
If you did not copy the previews folder, select all images in the catalog and do "Render Standard Size Previews" from the Library Menu
Come back here if anything is not clear or you have other questions.

Best if you try and explain what you are trying to acheive.
Iphoto is a different paradigm than you're used to. I don't understand why you are trying to transfer your edited photos back to an external disk.

  • Duplicated pictures in iPhoto after syncing

    Hello all,
Problem:  After syncing a folder of photos from my iMac to iPhone I end up with x2 folders on my iPhone.  One is the album I am syncing and the other is named Photo Library. These folders are duplicates of each other and as a result iPhoto shows duplicates of every photo under the Photo section of the app.
This doesn't happen on my iPad and I can't delete any of them from my iPhone.
Is this a design flaw or am I doing something wrong?
    Many Thanks
    James
iPhone 4S and software is fully up to date

I have the same problem x 2   with 2 folders with the same pictures.
I went to Apple store and they said to connect to Itunes and then I could delete unwanted folders but I cannot.
I cannot connect to Itunes and delete these unwanted photo albums.
I see posts here with people saying the photo libraries only point to the pictures already stored on my computer backup but why do they stay on my IPhone 5 when I detatch the phone from my computer (not Mac).
I believe it is chewing up phone memory (16G) so I do not have enough for my podcasts and music..  Or is it that I have to buy another Iphone?????

Once my computer was repaired, I brought it home and did a restore from the TM backup, but my iPhoto pictures didn't come with it. I have lost some photos because of this, but I hope to be able to get them back with your help! I have TM backups from around, before, and after the time of the hard drive crash. Any help is appreciated! Thank you!

Please description how you retrieve your backup from TM. I have done quite a few of these and may be able to share some experience with you.
