Unusual disk writing in Parallels

Just upgraded to ML from Lion. Now every time I do something in a Windows 7 programme in Parallels 7 (latest version), something gets written to my hard drive (according to Activity Monitor, Parallels Desktop is the process responsible for the writing). I went back to Lion from a clone backup, re-updated Parallels. Everything OK. Updated Windows. Everything OK. Re-installed ML. The problem returned. This version of Parallels is supposed to be compatible with ML, but I'm stumped. Any suggestions?

The unusual part is something being written to disk every few seconds. I don't know what is being written or to where. It's the why I'm concerned about. Problems related to this issue have been reported on the Parallels forum and seem to be associated with coherence. A workaround is to exit coherence or to use programmes in Desktop 1. So I can now at least work without so much disk activity, but a fix would be better than a workaround. The problem seems to be with Parallels rather than with ML, so hopefully a fix will be forthcoming.

  • XQuery is causing lots of disk writing

    Hi,
In our system, we found that XQuery is causing lots of disk writing. I guess it is due to cache.
    In dbxml document, it says:
All Berkeley DB XML applications are capable of writing temporary files to disk. This happens when the disk cache fills up and so BDB XML is forced to write overflow pages. For the most part, these temporary files can be safely ignored.
I don't understand what it says above.
My question is: Why Xquery operations will cause lots of disk write? (No other proocesses are writing bdb. )
    Thanks.
    -Yuan

    Hi Yuan,
DB XML uses temporary Berkeley DB databases for a number of things during query evaluation, including re-sorting index entries and storing the parsed documents from a WholedocContainer format container. Berkeley DB will write this information out to disk if the cache becomes full. I would suggest that the behaviour you're seeing indicates that you need to allocate more cache for DB XML to work with.

  • Is VISA Write VI / Out Port (need AccessHW) better for writing to parallel port?

We have experimented with 2 methods for writing to parallel port:
    1. Using NI VISA directly by calling VISA Write vi.
    2. Using the Out Port vi, for which we had to install AccessHW.
Does the first method have any disadvantages. It seems to be a simpler solution.
    Operating system: Windows 2000
    Labview 8.2
    NI VISA 4.0

    Hey rashadi,
There is nothing wrong with using the VISA write.vi to write to a parallel port.  Here is a great example program of how to use the VISA vi's to write to a parallel  port.
    I hope this helps!

  • I am trying to resize disk space on parallels 6 for windows XP under configure Hardrive and I get the error resizing failed unable to resize last volume the file system of this volume might be damaged or not supported?  I am on a Mac using Parallels 6

I have been trying to increase my disk space for windows xp on my Imac and I am running parallels 6.  before opening windows I go into configure in parallels and open the hard drive and try to move the allotted disk space from 32 gig to 64 or any other increased gig and then apply and I get the error message: resizing failed unable to resize last volume.  The file system of this volume might be damaged or not supported.  How do I increase the size??  I just also did a disk repair utility with Apple on the Apple side of my IMAC.  Please Help!!   I had uninstalled SQL server on the windows side and needed to uncompress files to install this and then I ran short on disk space.

This sounds to me that your Parallels XP file system is corrupted and not the OSX file system.
Have you checked the XP file system while running the Parallels XP yet ?
However, it would be better to ask such question in the Parallels Forum http://forum.parallels.com/

  • Increasing disk size in Parallels?

I just migrated my old iMac to a new 27" quad core i5. I moved over my old Parallels configuration - parallels 5 with Win XP and am trying to do an upgrade to Parallels 6 and Win 7. Parallels 6 installs fine but when I try to add win 7 it tells me I don't have enough disk space allocated. I have a 1 terabyte drive but can't figure out how to allocate more to Parallels. Currently I have only a 7 gig allocation for my virtual machine. I have tried to use the Acronis disk program Parallels suggested but just don't have a clue on what to do.
    suggestions?

By default, the Automatically option is selected. In this case, the total amount of RAM to be allocated to all running virtual machines is automatically calculated by the system based on the following main factors:
the total amount of memory installed on your Macintosh computer and
the amount of memory required by Mac OS X for its operation.
The allocated amount of memory is shared among all running virtual machines.
*You can configure the amount of physical memory for a particular virtual machine on the General tab of Virtual Machine Configuration.*
You can redefine the default behaviour and manually set the amount of memory to be reserved for all active virtual machines. To this effect, select the Manually option and specify the needed value by:
    dragging the slider, or
using the spin box arrows, or
typing the value directly into the field

  • Writing to parallel port

i need to be able to write to the parallel port on a desktop computer
to control a stepper motor.  I need to be able to write logic high and
    low
at certain pins that go to a stepper motor driver.  The writing to the
port needs to be done so many times, or so many steps that are entered
into the interface. Pins7 is the clock that that starts the stepper
motor control in the stepper motor driver.  Also, pins 9 and 10 need
to be driven low or high to tell driver wether half or full step and counter clockwise or clockwise.
Basically i need to know how to set up my parallel port on my labtop in labView 7.1?
I want to be able to use the write to digital I/O.vi to send the proper
binary or hex value of an index array  to the parallel port
    to drive the motor driver.

  • Can't identify cause of non-stop disk writing.

Since Saturday when the server starts up some process begins continuously writing to the disk. It continues forever, degrading performance as other processes wait to access the disk, and also slowly eats space (about 500 MB per hour).
I have identified the process as being something run by sh under the root account. It comes up again as soon as the server is rebooted. I haven't yet found out what or where it is writing to on the disk. I'll try FSLogger tomorrow.
There have been no configuration changes, but this coincides with other issues that have cropped up in the past few days. Can anyone help in identifying what is running (besides just sh) and how to stop it, other than Force Quitting/killing it manually.
    Thank you,
    AJ Zmudosky

FSLogger showed that most of the activity was the script writing to error logs about MySQL crashing and being restarted.
I tried launching mysqld_safe manually from the command line and got the same errors, but there have been no changes to cause it. This happens with both the Apple MySQL, and a fresh copy of 5.0.16 installed in /usr/local.
I stopped both from starting up temporarily.

  • Unusual disk read write and system lockup - Gen 1 MacPro dual Intel

I have had this issue for a while - but I think it is getting worse (or I'm just more tired of it). The disks start reading/writing ( I can see it in Activity Monitor) and continue for several minutes. Meanwhile, the system is fully occupied and cant be used.
In the Activity Monitor window, I notice that ICalExternalSync is using up nearly a gig or memory and 2 gigs virtual memory - is this normal?
Also, the kernal_task item is using up 58 threads, another gig of virtual memory but just 80mb of real memory. Just seems odd.
    Any suggestions?

  • Windows 7 Disk Space on Parallels 10

I have recently installed windows 7 on parallels 10. It has allocated 64gb of hard disk space to the virtual machine. After I installed windows 7 and some other software programs (Revit 2013, AutoCAD 2015 & Microsoft Office 2013) I was left with only 19gb left. Windows prompted me to install a whole list of updates for Windows 7 (2gb worth). However, once I downloaded these and had them installed I was left with only 9gb of disk space! Does this sound right?
I am only running a few programs on my windows virtual machine. I understand some of the programs I am running can be a bit demanding on disk space however, when I look at the requirements for these programs the amount of disk space being used does not add up (Revit approx.5gb, AutoCAD 2015 approx. 6gb, Microsoft Office Professional 2013 approx. 3gb). I read somewhere that Windows 7 64-bit should take up approx.20gb. Given this, and the requirements of the other programs I have mentioned, It should leave me with approx.29gb of disk space available. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

In Windows, there is a program called Disk Cleanup. If you run that and delete all but the most recent restore points, you may be surprised at how much space is recovered. I use VMware Fusion rather than Parallels but Fusion supports the ability to "reclaim" space on the VM drive. I suspect Parallels offers something similar.

  • Reading/writing to parallel port LabVIEW 7.0 Win2000

I'm using LabVIEW 7.0 on a Windows 2000 machine which also has the CVI runtime engine version 6.0.4.105.
I wish to write to the parallel port, simply on/off signal to eight lines. I have previously done this with LabVIEW 5+Win98. I have downloaded the accessHW libraries and installed them but have discovered that I also need the CVI rte version 5.0 . When IT personnel try to install this run time engine "A newer version of this run time engine is currently installed"
appears and won't install version 5 over version 6. Has anyone else come up against this and is there a way around this (without having to install an older version of LabVIEW)?

You could also use the PortIO library from the OpenG project
    http://www.openg.org.
It is currently only in the CVS source code
repository on that site and not yet part of the OpenG Toolkit. Because
it is not everybodys thing to use CVS I include that library as
    attachement here.
I tested it myself on Win95, NT4, 2000 and XP and had no problems at all
with it. But please consider it beta software and if you have problems
let me know with as much details as possible.

  • Disk writing failure

Since updating to iTunes 7, I have been getting this message:
What can I do? I have already restored everything once...
I got a black and white clickwheel iPod recently traded in through Applecare...
    Thx

i had the exact problem as you. have you tried using a different usb port? these were the steps i took:
    1) reset iPod.
    2) restore iPod on my laptop iTunes (because it wasn't working on my g5).
    3) then i kept trying to sync the iPod with iTunes on my g5 (because that was where my main music library was), but i kept getting the message: "The disk could not be read from or written to." i was using the usb port at the front of the g5.
    4) then i tried a different usb port. the first one i tried was on a usb hub. i manually added a few songs to the iPod. IT WORKED! then i switched to another usb port on the back of the g5. IT WORKED there, too!
    5) so i sync'ed the iPod to iTunes on the g5. a few times during the sync, i would receive that same message: "The disk could not be read from or written to."
    6) so i would safely eject the iPod, then reconnect, and re-sync all over again until the iPod was completely updated. a little bit of a pain, but at least my iPod is functioning again (after being dead for a couple of weeks.)
    hope this helps.

  • How do I get optical drive to read Windows 7 disk?

The drive has been troublesome almost from the start (including a trip to the shop where it was replaced while still under warranty)...it'll recognize movie DVDs most times, the Snow Leopard install disk sometimes, the Parallels Desktop 6 for Mac all the time...and the Windows 7 64bit Home Premium OEM DVD disk, never.
It's an early 2008 MacBook Pro (4,1), with an LG (I'm pretty sure) HL-DT-ST- DVDRW GSA-S10N with revision AP12.
I put the disk in both a Windows laptop and our other MacBook Pro, and it's not the disk.  (Wish I knew enough to successfully use MBP 2's superdrive to install using Parallels on MBP 1's hard drive.)
I've got to be missing something...

Thanks so far for the 2.5 replies, but...I restarted computer and walked away to let it do its thing, came back and it looked like it was asleep.  Now, it won't start...period.  Push and hold power button, LED at front goes dark.  Push power button, small superdrive spin up, LED in lid release button goes bright, then dim, same black screen like computer is dead.
I instinctively tried taking off power supply and removing battery...same results.  Came across instructions for a SMC re-set, did those...same results.
Edit:  I even instinctively then tried removing one RAM module, to see if that would make it snap out of its funk.  Next I'll try unplug, removing battery and walking away...
Ouch, perfect timing, as MBP1 just came off warranty a couple months ago.  Now I'm wondering if I even spend the $50 at Tech Advanced (no apple store nearby) to get the stupid thing evaluated (now it doesn't look like a superdrive problem, now it looks like some motherboard prob).
sig, as far as bringing drive back...I'm sure that it (the replacement drive) is also out of warranty.  johnl927, I have no idea of what you speak.

This is the low level device driver used by all NI hardware device
drivers. PAL stands most probably for Platform Abstraction Layer and
what that means it is providing an uniform device driver API for
managing memory, IO addresses, DMA channels and Interrupts. Most
probably this NIPAL device driver API is almost the same on all
platforms NI develops modern hardware drivers for. This allows easier
porting of device drivers to new hardware as the big work for porting a
hardware driver is about porting this NIPAL device driver.
    I
would not think that disk writing is the real culprit here, but it may
trigger a problem occuring earlier during VXI access.

  • My parallel port cannot work on win2000 and new pc

I was troubled by the reading/writing from parallel port on win2000 for a long time. I had made my programs work on win2000/OLD PC, but i failed with the same programs on win2000/new PC. I tried with the method from the forum, that is, install accessHW and other method from my colleagues. Allways failed. I have to return to an old pc, it work! I think not only win2000/winxp will influence parallel port work, but also pc hardware. My new PC is Dell's GX260SMT with p4 2.4G. Dell's FAE told me that i can not install win98 on the pc due to some limitation of mainboard. Who met the smae issue as mine? How to fix it? Thanks for any help.

I typically stay away from Dell PC's. I always have problems with them..
I'm surprised to read that a new PC doesn't support Win-98. Have you / can you try Win-NT 4?
I can't understand why Win2K would be different with a newer PC. The OS assigns the base address of the parallel port to a typical value of 0378h. This is for LPT1.
My question would be: Are you having problems with LPT1 or do you have a PCI-based Parallel Port (to add ports)? If so, you cannot change the base address with Win-2K or Win-XP which assigns a PCI base address to the port.
Can you provide more details as what exactly changes between the 2 PC's. Other than the motherboard and typical hardware (of course).
How is the parallel port configured?
    What are you doing
    with it, etc?
Any information that can help figure out a solution.

    JLV
