Unusual DNS/DHCP requirement for 2012 Essentials at home.

I have a Windows 2012 Essentials server acting as DNS and DHCP server with a domain providing backups etc. for my home network. This is all working fine, no errors, no problems. Works well in fact, telling me when the kids haven't installed updates
or rebooted.
I have two groups of users. My step sons, 10 and 12, who I want to use OpenDNS as an external DNS provider with a very, very restricted policy, and my wife and I who want to use either root hints or Google DNS or any other DNS provider. Other, non-user
specific devices (xBox, WII, Satellite box, TV, CCTV etc.) can use either.
Prior to having the 2012 server, I had a 2k3 server running in a VM for DHCP, only and put my wife and my devices onto static reservations with the external DNS provider and just used OpenDNS as the default scope DNS. Unfortunately various bits
of the 2012 domain services don't appear to work unless the 2012 server is the first DNS server listed on the client devices (Backups fail. Can't find other local computers). This means currently we are all using OpenDNS.
What I would like is some way to tell 2012 to send DNS requests from the grown-ups group to a different DNS provider and leave the rest to default to OpenDNS whilst still having them register themselves in the home DNS domain. Any suggestions?

Hi,
According to your description, my understanding is that you want to specify DNS server to different user groups and devices. And all of the home devices registry their DNS record on your internal DNS server.
I am not sure about the IP address configuration of your home network. Windows Server 2012 is the only device directly connect to Internet, and all of the devices on home network are on a private network?
If it is the case, WS 2012 also works as the gateway of your home network, all of the network traffic(external) should go throw the WS 2012. Windows DNS Server can’t specify different external DNS server based on users/groups. In order to implement the function
you required, it is necessary to add another DNS server(which connects to the Internet). One of the DNS servers is configured to use root hints or forwarders(Google or any other DNS provider). Other DNS server is configured to use forwarder(OpenDNS). Then
using DHCP server to specify DNS servers to different devices.

  • Hardware required for RAC setup at home

    Hi All,
Could you please suggest the Hardware required for practicing RAC at home.
    Regards,
    VN

    Hi, "user7202581",
For practicing purposes, you could consider a VBox / OVM based setup at home. We have used those for Hands On Labs in the course of Oracle Open World more than once. I recommend you use a machine with at least 8GB memory and dual core (HT enabled) processors. Some configuration examples: Lenovo Laptop, ThinkPad, 8GB, 320GB HDD, i5 dual core, 2.5 GHz, Win 7 or a Mac Mini, latest version, i5 dual core, 2.3GHz and 8GB memory would do the trick for a two node cluster. Note that I mention the hosting OS in case you use VBox. For OVM based setups you either have to use a dual boot system or use a dedicated machine. You will be somewhat restricted with respect to the hardware failures you can impose on this system obviously (due to the VM setup), but for practicing purposes, you should find those environments sufficient, I think. Also see: RAC on OVM templates: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/vm/rac-template-11grel2-166623.html
    Hope that helps. Thanks,

You misunderstand. Even in Creative Cloud the programs install locally. It's merely a different licensing and distribution model. For the requirements, refer to the producrt pages of the individual products like here:

  • DNS server required for default route

I'm trying to find out if Apple is aware of this requirement, as it is problematic for network engineers.
The summary of the problem is that without a DNS server configured, mavericks will not activate the default route. So if you configure a DHCP scope without a DNS server, your Mac will not be able to have IP connectivity outside it's local subnet.
    I blogged the details of this bug/feature: http://transmitfailure.blogspot.com/2014/02/mac-os-x-mavericks-dns-server-requir ed.html
I'd really like to hear from Apple, just to say if this is intended or not.  The commenter said this is happening on 10.9.2 as well as the 10.9.1 I tested.

You're very unlikely to receive a direct response on that from Apple through these discussions.

  • Academic licensing for 2012 Essentials

Hi, I have seen an academic license option advertised by resellers for Windows Server2012 Essentials. Are there any functional differences between this academic license version and the regular version?

    Hi,
Thanks for posting in the forum.
Regarding Academic Volume Licensing, it can provide simple, flexible, volume-based pricing. I suggest you could refer to the following article for details.

  • Dns setting require for mail server 2013

    Hello Support,
I have install exchange server 2013 and working fine but right now i have some change in DNS server record and my mail services stop. what record add to start my mail services ( sent and received). till now exchange server mail box give the error mail not
connected with server. Please revered ASAP.

couple of things to notice. if you saying your exchange services stopped... this wont happen because of DNS or are you saying you exchange is not working/mail flow.
now i would suggest to quickly check the mail services. run a test for inbound and outbound at exrca.com there you will have the proper answer that what you have missed.
and at last.. for DNS.. you need MX and A record for your email server for basic functioning .. and for autodiscover couple of more. lets verify the MX and A record first and then verify the send and receive connector. to verify MX do a Nslookup as below
    >cmd
    >nsloookup   {This should resolve to your local DNS if you running this from exchange server, which is recommended and should not time out}
    >set type=mx
    > your-domain.com {This should result "A" record / FQDN of your mail server}
    > set type=A {To verify the above FQDN should point to right IP}
    > mail.your-domain.com [assuming that in MX output you got mail-your-domain.com]
    > 1.1.1.1  [IP of your email server]
if you are able to verify above then your chances are you dont have issue with DNS.
Make sure from oursite you are able to telnet t tour exchange server on port 25 and from inside you are able to resolve names from your exchange server and also have internet access.if you able to verify till this point then its the turn now to verify send
and receive connector. one easy way is exrca.com and then share the results.

  • Windows 2008 DNS & DHCP configuration steps for 11gR2 GI install with GNS

    Hi,
I have windows 2008 R2 server with DNS & DHCP services installed. I am planning to install 2 node RAC with GNS option.
The problem is i could not find any document to setup the windows 2008 DNS server for the below steps.
    a. Configure GNS VIP : add a name resolution entry in a DNS for the GNS virtual IP address in the forward Lookup file.
    gns-server IN A <virtual_IP>
where gns-server is the GNS virtual IP address given during grid installation.
    b. Configure the GNS sub-domain delegation: add an entry in the DNS to establish DNS Lookup that directs the DNS resolution of a GNS subdomain to the cluster.
    clusterdomain.example.com. NS gns-server.example.com.
where clusterdomain.example.com is the GNS subdomain (provided during grid installation) that you
delegate and gns-server.clustername.com resolves to GNS virtual IP address.
I am aware that this configuration steps has to be taken care by the System administrator. Here is what he tried and the results.
My SA was able to Configure GNS VIP in the DNS and the Nslookup works fine for this.
When he Configures the GNS sub-domain delegation the nslookup fails when trying to resolve the SCAN name.
Any step by step tutorial for this windows 2008 DNS & DHCP configuration for Oracle GNS setup would be highly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Ashok Kumar.G

    Hi Guys,
Any help on this request will be very helpful.

  • Domain Controller, DHCP, DNS Migration from 2008 r2 to 2012 Essentials

I would like to migrate Domain Controller, DHCP, and DNS functions to a new 2012 Essentials server in a 2008 r2 domain.  I would like  the 2008 r2 server to remain as applications server.  Is it possible to do this?  I've seen in TechNet
a reference to this type of migration, but am concerned about the reference that after 21 days the 2008 will shut down.  Is it that the server will shut down or the Domain Controller function on the 2008 will shut down? I will need the 2008 setup as is
for our application server, so I want to be sure that the migration will not interfer with that.

As long as your existing server is not also an SBS or other Essentials server, it'll be fine. The shutdown after 21 days occurs when multiple SBS or Essentials servers are on the same domain.

  • Single server as Soft AP, DC, DNS, DHCP for a small office

The server is running 2012 R2 Foundation with a wired network for internet (Comcast). It has a WiFi adapter so it can host a wireless network (as a Soft AP). The WiFi host has a static IP 1.1.1.1.
On the server I have setup AD, DNS, and DHCP services (all bind to that static IP).
All clients need to connect server and internet via WiFi, and join the domain for work.
But it looks like the DHCP/DNS services don't like the virtual adapter - although all clients can connect, they cannot get their IP.
Without AD/DNS/DHCP I can share internet connection with ICS perfectly, so I think the hosted WiFi network is setup correctly.
I tried to remove the DHCP service, and use ICS to assign IP - it works, but clients cannot see the DNS server and thus cannot join AD.
What am I missing? Thanks for your help!

It is never a good idea to run a DC with two NICS. It causes all sorts of problems. (The only exception was SBS server which was designed as a one-box solution). Also, a domain will not run behind ICS. If you are running a domain, the domain clients
must use the local DNS (on the DC) for DNS, not the DNS relay system of ICS. RRAS/NAT will work because you can configure it so that it does not run its own DHCP function. ICS is not configurable.
Even if you overcome that problem, you still have the multihomed DC problem. It really isn't worth the effort to save a few bucks.

  • Windows Server 2012 Essentials not listed in EasyStartup 3.8.1d for TS140

Recently purchased a TS140 (70A4 001RUS). Came factory installed RAID 1 with Windows Server 2012 Essentials pre-installed. Needed to reinstall, however:
    - Windows Server 2012 Essentials does not show up in EasyStartup 3.8.1c DVD that came with server
    - Downloaded latest EasyStartup 3.8.1d and created bootable DVD and ran with same result
    - "Windows Server 2012" is listed (but not Essentials). Running this installation, it does not recognize the Windows Server 2012 Essentials External Recovery DVD that came with server. Continually asks to insert "Windows Server 2012" disk.
    - "Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials" is listed (but not 2012 Essentials). Running this installation, it does not recognize the Windows Server 2012 Essentials External Recovery DVD that came with server. Continually asks to insert "Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials" disk.
    - Have booted using UEFI, Legacy and Auto with no difference
    - Ran lastest Firmware Updater v1.8.1013 - no updates listed as required
    - Have updated BIOS to latest 70A
    - Server will also not boot directly from Windows Server 2012 Essentials External Recovery DVD (dvd is set 1st in boot order in bios)
    - Windows Server 2012 Essentials External Recovery DVD is readable on other machines - can copy to bootable USB key and run regular Windows installation on server (this is current workaround)
    - using the above workaround, drivers must be installed manually.
    - EasyStartup 3.8.1d Readme specificly lists Windows Server 2012 Essentials as supported on the TS140 in UEFI and Legacy mode here
As mentioned, the above workaround can work. However, this server may not always be maintained by myself and I would prefer the supplied software to acutally work properly for ease of use by others in the future.

I have several TS140s running WSE 2012 R2.  Like you said, the easystart does not recognize properly the WSE R2 os, so I just did the basic from disc or USB install after I configured the boot drives or RAID1 array.
The main reason to load the easy start is for drivers, however WSE found and recognized all the hardware in the unit.

  • ISSUE: "This domain controller must register a DNS SRV resource record, which is required for replication to function correctly"

so we currently have three domain controllers set up, two of them on 2012r2 and one of them on 2008r2. prior to any of these domain controllers being added to the domain there was only one, running on 2003r2. the 2003r2 server was up and running when the
first 2012r2 was added and that's when running 'dcdiag /e /c /v' would yield an issue with "_ldap._tcp.9a5f3c17-e7ac-48f7-ab42-bf1ea621a6f5.domains._msdcs.cmedia.local" in the DNS portion of the diagnostics, specifically:
    TEST: Records registration (RReg)
Network Adapter [00000010] Microsoft Hyper-V Network Adapter:
    Error:
Missing SRV record at DNS server 192.168.22.4:
    _ldap._tcp.9a5f3c17-e7ac-48f7-ab42-bf1ea621a6f5.domains._msdcs.cmedia.local
after adding the second 2012r2 to the domain, this issue is still there... adding the 2008r2 server to the domain and running BPA it gives the following:
    Title:
This domain controller must register a DNS SRV resource record, which is required for replication to function correctly
    Severity:
    Error
    Date:
    7/3/2014 11:24:48 AM
    Category:
    Configuration
    Issue:
The "DcByGuid" DNS service (SRV) resource record that advertises this server as an available domain controller in the domain and ensures correct replication is not registered. All domain controllers (but not RODCs) in the domain must register this record.
    Impact:
Other member computers and domain controllers in the domain or forest will not be able to locate this domain controller. This domain controller will not be able to provide a full suite of services.
    Resolution:
Ensure that "DcByGuid" is not configured in the "DnsAvoidRegisteredRecords" list, either through Group Policy or through the registry. Restart the Netlogon service. Verify that the DNS service (SRV) resource record "_ldap._tcp.9a5f3c17-e7ac-48f7-ab42-bf1ea621a6f5.domains._msdcs.cmedia.local", pointing to the local domain controller "CM-DC4-NY01.cmedia.local", is registered in DNS.
More information about this best practice and detailed resolution procedures: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=126968
I've tried scanning and then re-scanning every single entry in DNS Manager and do not see any reference to this specific GUID mentioned, nor do I see any other domain controllers referenced that should not be in there. The two 2012r2 and the 2008r2 domain
controllers are the only ones listed in DNS Manager... the 2003r2 mentioned earlier failed and was removed.

Just to chime in, I noticed that you said you have one 2008 R2 DC, and two 2012 DCs.
I also noticed in the ipconfig /all that all DCs are pointint to themselves for DNS. We usually like to see them point to a partner, then itslelf as the second entry, w hether loopback or by its own IP.
Based on that, what I suggest to level the playing field by choosing the WIndows 2008 R2 DC as the first DNS on all DCs and only administer DNS using that DC. The reason I chose that is because of the least common denominator is what we rather use so we
don't invoke any new features in the newer 2012 DNS console that 2008 R2 may not understand.  After that's done, on each DC run (and you can use a PowerShell window to run this):
Rename the system32\config\netlogon.dns and netlogon.dnb files by suffixing ".old" to the file.
    ipconfig /registerdns
    net stop netlogon
    net start netlogon
    Then re-run the dcdiag /e /c /v.
    Post your results, please.

I thought the DNS entries were supposed to be the other way around? point to themselves first and a partner as secondary? regardless, as requested, I've changed it to what you've prescribed where they point to the 2008r2 server as the primary with themselves
as the secondary. I've also followed the steps to what seems like refreshing the DNS? on each of the DCs. Here's the output from dcdiag /e /c /v

  • DPM 2012 R2 UR4 and BMR backup from physical 2008 R2 (DC, DNS, DHCP,WSUS, WDS)

    Hi,
    I'm completely lost.
    We updated from DPM2010 (2008 R2) to DPM 2012 R2 RU4 (2012 R2).
Clean install. Same hardware. Everything went quite smoothly.
Our new (and also old did the same thing) DMP protects some Hyper-V guest on our 2008 R2 Hyper-V cluster, one Exchange (2010) DB's and SQL 2008 R2 DB's and one physical server - 2008 R2 (DC, DNS, DHCP,WSUS, WDS ~160GB of data).
Currently we are using some Buffalo Terastation's III (TS-RIXL) iSCSI SAN storage to hold our DPM protected data.
    Configured as RAID 5.
Our new DPM server is connected to those iSCSI devices using built in MS iSCSI initiator via secondary NIC on this server using dedicated iSCSI subnet.
Everything seems to be fine unitil System State and BMR (I'v checked both) runs.
Basically my iSCSI NIC shows Write about ~170Mbit/s and Read about 520Mbit/s when backing up virtual machines, Exchange or SQL.
When it comes to System State and BMR backup the trouhgput is MUCH slower (about 65Mbit/s) and I can not figure out why. I understand that the BMR backup initiates direct writing to the DPM created and shared replica volume on my iSCSI NAS (my wording
might be not correct but basically  I understand how this works). But I don't understand why the speed is so much slower. I'v tried everything, googeled around, changed NIC drivers, firmware etc. No luck.
If I just copy some big ISO file from/to server to DPM or vice versa the speed is arount 100MB/s (as reported by windows itself). So it seems to able to utilize full network speed. But why this backup is so slow? I'm excpecting to see speed about ~170Mbit/s
because it corresponds my iSCSI Write speed as seen when backing up hyper-v guests and DB's..
    What I'm doing wrong?
    Any help is appreciated :)
    rgds Sven

    Hi Sven,
Sometimes BMR is slower than backing up virtual machines (VHDs). If there is a free local disk, please test to do a backup locally to see the speed. From your description a common backup works much faster so let's see if it is the backup speed which causes
    the issue or not.

  • PowerEdge 1850 and PowerEdge 2550 Can either be used for Server 2012 R2 or Server 2012 Essentials?

I know these are NOT supported for S2012 by Dell,
    However,
has anyone ever loaded either operating system on them, even just to test?

    Hi,
I agree with Tim’s viewpoint. Meanwhile, please note the related installation requirements for Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows Server 2012 Essentials. There are
two articles that you can refer to.
System Requirements and Installation Information for Windows Server 2012 R2

System Requirements for Windows Server 2012 Essentials
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj200132.aspx
In addition, follow Tim’s thought. There is also a guide that will help you to install Windows Server 2012 in a Hyper-V.
How to install Windows Server 2012 in a Hyper-V VM
    https://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/os-applications/w/wiki/666.how-to-install-windows-server-2012-in-a-hyper-v-vm.aspx

  • DNS record ownership for DHCP clients

    my configuration:
dhcp/dns/dc installed on same system - Windows 2008 R2 SP1 in domain environment.
all zones configured to secure updates only with aging and scavenging enabled
dhcp servers are member of DNSupdateproxy group.
dhcp are configured with standard domain user account (this user was made a member of dnsupdateproxy as well, DOES THAT MATTER?)
dhcp scopes are configured with default DNS setup (force DNS update by DHCP)
    now...
all DNS records for endpoint devices on dhcp lease (windows7, mac os X, ubuntu) are owned by SYSTEM
in security tab for some DNS records i can see service account with write permission to record ( i believe this is desired state)
in other records service account has no permission but timestamps are still updated by computer account (hostname$ has write permission). these records have pencil icon on computers in dhcp lease table.
Problem with this (hostname$ has write permissions) is when user connect to network via VPN (obtains dhcp lease) it get's two records registered in DNS -> 1 record for ip distributed by dhcp server and 2nd record for his home private network.
    Have anyone seen this before?
i've tried deleting DNS records / releasing ip on endpoint device (example win7). It would not register to DNS by DHCP. However if i do ipconfig /registerdns it will do it, but dhcp service account won't have permission no this record.

Apparently it appears that DHCP may not be configured with credentials, DHCP DNS settings are not configured to force DHCP to register ALL requests, nor has the DHCP server itself have been added to the DnsUpdateProxy group. These are all prerequisites
for DHCP to own all records, otherwise you will see default behavior, which is:
By default, a Windows 2000 and newer statically configured machines will
register their A record (hostname) and PTR (reverse entry) into DNS.
If set to DHCP, a Windows 2000 or newer machine will request DHCP to allow
the machine itself to register its own A record, but DHCP will register its PTR
    (reverse entry) record.
The entity that registers the record in DNS, owns the record.
    In summary:
Configure DHCP Credentials. The credentials only need to be a plain-Jane, non-administrator, user account. Give it a really strong password.
Set DHCP properties, DNS tab, to update everything, whether the clients can or cannot.
Add the DHCP server(s) to the Active Directory, Built-In DnsUpdateProxy security group.
Make sure ALL other non-DHCP servers are NOT in the DnsUpdateProxy group. For example, some believe that the DNS servers or other DCs not running DHCP should be in it. They must be removed or it won't work.
On Windows 2008 R2 or newer, DISABLE Name Protection.
If DHCP is co-located on a Windows 2008 R2 or Windows 2012 DC, you can and must secure the DnsUpdateProxy group by running the following:
    dnscmd /config /OpenAclOnProxyUpdates 0
Configure Scavenging one one DNS server. Set the NOREFRESH and REFRESH values combined to be equal or greater than the DHCP Lease length. What it scavenges will replicate to others anyway.
