Unusual heat and whirring noise

Starting this summer, every so often, my computer will start making a strange sort of whirring noise. It sounds kind of like the noise the hard drive makes when it's spinning, except it's continuous and it doesn't stop or change until I close my computer. Whenever this happens, the computer also gets unusually hot - particularly in the back left corner, around where the AirPort and RAM slots are. I can smell a sort of hot-metal smell if I get close to the computer.
I usually resolve the problem by closing the computer and letting it sit for a while. Generally it cools down in a few minutes and is fine again when I open it.
Thus far, the problem has happened several times while I was playing Snood (a version that's not optimized for Mac and uses a lot of memory), and once while I was watching a video on the New York Times website. I've wondered if the problem was caused by me using too much memory - but the computer doesn't seem to have a problem when I'm using Adobe InDesign, NeoOffice, Microsoft Word, and Mail all at the same time, which I would think would take up much more memory than one video playing on Safari.
Is this just my computer overheating (and if so, how can I fix it/prevent it from happening)? Is something wrong with my hard drive? Or is it something else altogether? Should I be worried?
Note: I bought my computer in the summer of 2004, but the hard drive died in the summer of 2005 and had to be replaced. So my hard drive is a year younger than the rest of my computer.

Welcome to  Discussions,
They can get hot in Summer, but if it ever gets to the point of overheating it will go into a coma until it cools down again.
Having multiple applications open is no great stress, more having one processor intensive game can really heat things up. I remember playing SimCity over a few hot days and my little iBook was the hottest it has ever been. But it still kept running.
The whirring sounds like your fan spinning into high speed. They can be quite noisy compared to normal fan speed.
One tip, if you don't already know it, is to operate the iBook on a flat surface for heat dispersal, and not cradle it in your lap. On a table or a hard floor or surface will absorb some of that heat.
On really hot days, which to me means over 40 degrees C in Australia, I have a fan blowing over the computer. Not practical for a laptop outdoors, but I don't try and push them too hard on those really hot days.

  • TiBook battery got unusual heat and melted it's casing..should i call support?

    Hi Everyone,
I am new to this community and I need some opinions.
I have Ti Powerbook G4 (550Mhz) I bought brand new 10 or 11 years ago.
I still in love with this Titanium beauty and still use this for browsing internet.
(Amazingly, it still works just fine to do)
I bought macbook air few month ago but there is "something" about this
    Titanium baby.
Anyway, I was using my Tibook few days ago on my lap and I felt
unusual heat (it was very very hot) on my lap. I flipped it and check out
the buttom of my Tibook and WOW, the battery casing was started to melting,
so I just took the battery out of my Tibook.
The battery casing melted a bit (looks like cigarette burn from inside) so I am keeping this
battery in safe place just incase it caught fire.
This battery is not aftermarket, this is original battery came with my Tibook when I bought it
    brand new.
I googled this problem and I didnt find any battery problem with Tibook 550mhz model.
Should I report this problem to customer support? Does Apple still sell genuine battery for this Tibook?
This is my first battery problem and after this happening, I am very scared to buy thirdparty's

I wouldn't bother customer support.  The fact that you got a decade or more out of the battery makes it an outlier in longevity.  Not a lot of those batteries make it that far, though some seem to be remarkably blessed.  One of mine tanked in three and a half years (without melting, at least), one is remarkably robust and one is still quite serviceable at eight years, and the two aftermarket batteries are still holding up (though one is only a year old or so).
I got the 75 Watt-Hour model for the TiBooks at OWC last year and it is quite durable.  Apple hasn't sourced Titanium PowerBook batteries for years, I suspect they were "off the shelves" by 2006, as that was when I bought my first aftermarket unit.  I have seen good comments on the OWC batteries on these discussions, though you might want to wait for others to chime in.

  • Any problems with heat and fan noise on Guild Wars 2 Macbook Pro retina?

I am thinking to start Guild Wars 2 Mac beta on my Macbook pro retina, but i have been reading in different forums that it heats up the system and that the fan kicks off really loud when playing the game. Anyone has any experience on this? Any guild wars 2 gamers please give me some feedback.

I have been playing GW2 for a while now on Beta. The game runs choppier than windows but I think that's because it's a Beta version. I bet after they finish optimizing it things should change, even heat.
As for the heat, it gets super hot. So hot the keyboard gets hot, and when I push in the keys, I feel heat. It's warm enough to cause concern. I don't know if it's bad or not, but the dude at the Apple Genius/Store said, the MBPR knows when it gets too hot and it'll let you know. He said if it plays and nothing is warning me then it's fine. The MBPR won't allow itself to go to catastrophic failure due to heat.
So I took his advice and have played. Just Monday (October 1st 2012) I played for a good 5 hours non-stop and nothing came up so if the Apple Genius guy is correct then I wouldn't worry about it. I do have AppleCare so if something does fail then I will blame the apple genius guy.
It's a fun game, my first MMO, but it's too hard for me sometimes. I don't like that

  • [HELP] HP Pavilion DV6-6b50sa fan - abnormal whirring and grinding noises even after replacement

    Product:     HP Pavilion DV6-6b50sa
    Operating system:    Windows 7 64bit
    BIOS version:   F.1 C  (current)   01-2013
My laptop fan started making a very loud grinding and whirring noise constantly (very loud, easily heard in other rooms from the laptop) and after cleaning out with compressed air with no improvement I decided to get the fan replaced as it was clearly worn out in some way. (This laptop fan has always been loud, but never making this sort of grinding sound).
Replacement fan was ordered directly from HP and installed. However, while the noise is much quieter, the fan is still making a constant sort of whirring/very low grinding noise which gets louder and changes pitch whenever the fan kicks up to a higher speed.  While the laptop is now at least useable, this noise is still annoying after being on for a long time and I did not expect it to still have the same problem after fully replacing the fan.
Since then I have looked online for solutions and similar problems, having since flashed the BIOS to the latest version, checked both the hard drive and memory in the BIOS (both proved fine)  and tried switching between having the fan mode set to always on or not always on in the BIOS and messing around with HP coolsense. None of these have helped remove this constant whirring sound.
Now this laptop fan has always been loud. That I am ok with, I know the sound of a loud, yet working fan drawing air, but this is not the same sound. The fan is still drawing air sufficiently and keeping the system temperature down to an acceptable level, but this constant whirring noise is annoying when having to work on the laptop.
    [In Summary]
-HP Pavilion DV6-6b50sa  Laptop fan had loud whirring/grinding noise
    -Fan was replaced
-Noise reduced and grinding somewhat gone, but whirring and some grinding remains even with the new fan from HP
Any help would be great, I have tried to include as much information regarding the problem as I can but if there is anything else needed dont hesitate to ask and I can try to provide such information as required.
    Michal.

Also, when the fan is running at higher speeds the whirring/grinding noise is quieter and less noticable than when it is running at very low speeds... When running at very very high speeds (while playing games)  the fan sounds almost the same as my old one when it was still working, and at high speeds its more a whirring humm... Then at lower speeds it goes back to a more low whirring/grinding.
Not sure if this helps but its just something I've noticed...  Any help with this problem?

  • Syncing hangs and disk makes clicking/whirring noises

I recently got a 80GB Ipod from a friend. This had previously been used with a Mac and I had to reimage it when I first connected it to a Windows machine. I had no problems intially until it started skipping some songs at random - it would play the first few seconds of a song and then skip to the next. The same song would play perfectly well if I went back to it or played the album once again. This was an annoyance but my Ipod was still usable. After I had loaded about 10-15 GB of music, loading further music into the Ipod became impossible - it would hang during syncing while the disk made some strange clicking and whirring noises. After a few more attempts at loading music, my computer stopped recognizing my Ipod and reported that an unknown USB device had been connected. I then restored my Ipod, after which it functioned mostly okay (except for an occasional skipped song). Today, when loading some music, syncing become progressively slower until it almost came to a crawl. I could hear the clicking and whirring noises from the disk again, so I canceled the sync operation and managed to eject my Ipod. Does anyone have an idea of what the problem could be? I initially thought it could be due to disk fragmenatation but am a little skeptical since I have more than 50 GB of free space. Would reformatting the drive help?

It is very likely caused by the bad sectors on the Hard drive of your iPod, you have to do a format (not a quick format) to solve. Doing a Restore = a quick format + installation of iPod software ...

  • I have Heat and high Fans Voice if i play games

    macbook pro i7 2.2 2011
i have Heat and Voice of the fan is too high  if i play games on mac os x lion or bootcamp windows 7
Is this problem is not good for macbook pro ?

If you are askiing whether heat and fan noise affect the machine, the answer is no, as long as the internal temperature remains within the machine's safe operating range. Keeping it within that range is what the fans are doing and why they are making noise. If the temperature exceeds that safe range, the machine will shut itself down.
If you are asking whether the heat and noise affect the user, of course the answer is yes, the user will notice them.

My 4th gen classic makes a continuous whirring and clicking noise and is not recognised on iTunes.  Any ideas?

That could be a clear sign of a damaged hard disk.  Can you try and force the iPod into Disk Mode and then connect it to iTunes so you can attempt a restore or even a low level reformat of the iPod's HD/file system.

    Dear best Users,
What shall I do? My Mac Pro 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo/OS X 10.8 13-inch 2009= Is heating and producing a lot of noise with the internal Fan.

If you can, open Activity Monitor and see what's using up all the %CPU.
If its kernel_task, shutdown immediately and do a PRAM reset, like this:
    1. Power down the machine.
    2. Locate the following keys on your keyboard in preparation for Step 4:
    ‘command’ – ‘option’ – ‘P’ – ‘R’
    3. Press the ‘power on’ button.
    4. Immediately – and before the grey screen appears – hold down ‘command-option-P-R’ all together.
    5. Keep them held down until you’ve heard the start-up chime twice. After you release them you should hear it again, and hopefully your Mac will boot up as it should and with the kernel_task process back to normal.
If that's not it, try quitting whatever the process is by selecting it in the Activity monitor window, then 'Quit' in the task bar. If the process refuses to quit, post back with the name of the process.

  • Help!! iBOOK makes whirring and flickering noises and wont boot up

I had noticed that my iBOOK G4 had been getting louder recently, making an increasingly aggressive whirring noise. Then one day it went crazy, it sounded like it was 'thinking' very hard and it froze and wouldn't even shut down. I got it to shut down eventually but now it wont start up. It rarely gets beyond the apple logo and just sits there making very loud whirring noises and it sounds like the hard drive is continually 'thinking'. It did manage to boot up fully once but soon froze again, the whirring noise getting even louder.
Is this a hard drive failure? Is there any hope for it to come back on long enough to recover some files or will I just have to give up and replace it?

  • Heat and noise?

About a year ago, I had a MacBook (which I didn't keep for a reason I won't go into) and it was very hot and the fan was always on. Are this year's MacBooks any better in those respects? Last year's was so hot I couldn't use it on my lap. I'd like to replace my second Mac, an iBook G4, but I'm hesitant about buying a MacBook because of the heat and noise issues.
    Thanks for any comments,
    Kirk

Because of the MB's compact nature (and this is true of all Mac notebooks to my knowledge), they do tend to get pretty hot when you start running more processor-heavy apps - this is the sacrifice for all the added bulk of exhaust fans on a lot of PC notebooks.
My MacBook is about 1.5 years old (1st-gen), and I never had a problem with the fans being ALWAYS on. I would assume that that was an isolated issue with that computer...it definitely shouldn't be that way.
As for using it on the lap, this isn't a good idea anyway. As the MacBook User's Guide will tell you, the computer is meant to be used on a flat surface. The thin rubber pads on each corner of the machine are designed to elevate the computer enough to allow air flow underneath adequate for cooling the machine no matter what - when you use it on your lap (or on a pillow or bed), the bottom case is insulated and air flow is minimal. Not only can this be uncomfortable on your lap, but it's also bad for the internal components.

  • Whirring noise coming from HP Touchsmart 520

    Hi there,
There is a whirring noise coming from the back of my PC. It gets slightly louder if performing a task, ie web browsing! Could you possibly let me know what the problem may be?
    Many thanks

    Hello soozii,
Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience! To help you get the most out of the HP Forums I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More.
I have read your post on how there is an unusual noise coming from your computer, and I would be happy to assist you in this matter!
Since the noise is coming from the back of the computer, I recommend following this document on Reducing Heat Inside the PC to Prevent Overheating. This should help prevent the fan in the back from overworking.
Please re-post with the results of your troubleshooting, and I look forward to your reply!

  • Too Hot, Going Blank, and Click Noises

I've read some of the previous posts on whining noises and noises in general, as well as those topics on heat.
I've had my MacBookPro since Mid-April and everything was going fine until Mid-August. At some point, the computer started making whirring noises. At first the whirring noises only happened when I had a lot of applications running and I was using up a lot of CPU. Now, even if all I have on is iChat, the whirring noises are consistently in the background. Turning on my Photobooth does nothing. Those whirring noises recently became clicking noises (like a game of Wheel of Fortune).
Especially when I run Photoshop 7.0, the whirring/clicking just gets really bad. Or if I'm watching a DVD. Can anyone explain to me what I should do to stop the noises and what I can do to save my mac? When I prop it up a bit so it's at a small 10 degree incline, the fans stop working as hard and I get a little less noise.
Next question. My mac is getting to be unbearably hot. I got my replacement battery for the recall, but that still hasn't changed anything. It gets so hot that I can't have it on my lap without feeling extremeley uncomfortable.
Every once in a while when I move my screens- specifically ichat screens, a little piece of my screen will turn into just a box of white pixels. It won't "fix" itself until I reboot. Anyone know what that is?
I'm planning on taking it into the MacStore soon to see if they can help me, but in the meantime is there anything I can do?
And I've never had AppleCare before... is it worth it?
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

i think your whirring noise come from the fans. they may be defective. i had the same noise, they replaced my fans. So go for repair.

  • Worrying whirring noise

I have been hearing new whirring noise from my laptop recently and am rather worried about it.
Can anyone shed some light on the causes/ possible effects?

Cooling Fan: video, games, display too bright, summer heat, flash sites.
Hard Drive: bearings, going bad, back-up soon.
Optical Drive: DV or CD inserted, eject.

  • New Intel Mini makes a slight whirring noise

    Hi
I have just replaced my old G4 Mac Mini with a entry level Intel Mini.
I noticed the new one maked a slight whirring noise constantly.
Its only minor but noticable in the background
The old Mini just used to have a slight fan noise which was more tolerable.
Do all new Mini's make this noise?
    Tc

Is the fan suppost to run at all times when the
    machine is on?
The fan on all minis runs constantly - in normal operating conditions it turns at relatively low speed and thus creates little noise. Initially because the mini ran so quietly, many owners concluded that the fan wasn't running until the system required it, but that isn't and wasn't the case. It was only after a MacOS update had altered the fan behaviour and made it spin up earlier as temperature rose or CPU increased that many users became aware that there even was a fan inside!
Since the fan is controlled by the system in response to temperature and load, it's apparent behaviour isn't always consistent between systems since it'll depend a lot on which version of MacOS, what ambient air temperatures and what services are running. Thus a mini that appears to run louder than usual may actually be nothing more than the user's perception, or higher ambient air temperature, or heavier load caused by additional services run at startup, or a version of MacOS that was more prone to ramp the fan up earlier in the temperature cycle - or of course a fault!
But indeed, where they are audible at all, the fans in the PPC models make a sound of different character completely from those in Intel models.
