Unusual high bandwith usage

I have an IMAP account with apple mail as the client. I get maybe 10 or 20 messages a day with few attachments. Yet my bandwith usage gets very high and sometimes goes over the limit. I also was getting blank messages in my mailbox as well as double messages. Sometimes I could see activity in the mail activity box but no messages were downloaded. Following advice from several people, I replaced the com.apple.mail.plist as well as the envelope index. It helped in that I have fewer blank messages and fewer double messages However my bandwith usuage is still going over the limit which is set at the max. I can't figure what to do other than replace Apple mail with Thunderbird. Is it possible there is some virus on my computer or someone is hijacking my email account? I don't have any problem if I use the IMAP account from the web.
Help!!

O.K. this is odd. I noticed that on the machine with the problems, the iMac, there were 2 envelope indexes: the envelope index and the envelope index-1. I shut down mail, then removed both and started mail and once again there were the same two indexes. I again shut down mail and this time removed the one called envelope index-1 and restarted mail. This time as I checked there was the envelope index and now something new called the envelope index-journal which kept on disappearing and reappearing every several seconds. I even restarted the computer and it still happens. Note this is in contract with the Macbook which has only one envelope index. If I shut down mail the second one the envelope index-journal disappears only to reappear when I open mail.

• Unusually high broadband usage over March and Apri...

Have others noticed that they appear to have used far more of their monthly broadband allowance in the last two months? My 'alleged' usage was quadruple my usual but on Friday when I called the billing team they didn't want to know and weren't particularly helpful. However I persistedwith the BT technical team on Sunday and they admitted that they had been receiving an unusually high level of calls from customers complaining about seemingly high usage. They were informing the billing team of the problem so I will continue to chase them this week. Apparently there was some issue with the usage monitor giving out incorrect information so it might be worth people challenging the billing team if they think the same thing has happened to them.

*** please ignore this as I am still having the same issue even without Skype
I've been checking my usage monitor since I installed it this morning and couldn't undestand what these huge red spikes in download activity were every few seconds and my usage was going up and up.
Looking on the internet for solutions I saw lots of mentions about Skype, which I have but have only used once or twice a couple of months ago. Oh, but wait a minute, that was when my usage skyrocketed. And guess what.. I just uninstalled it and now the huge red spikes are no more on my monitor!
I have no idea of the why and how but even though my Skype was not open it was doing something over the internet and something very big.
So if you have the same issue and you have some kind of video calling software installed it may be worth uninstalling it just to check.

• Unusually High CPU usage by almost all programs

I have a BIG problem with my computer. It start over a week ago and ever since, I've been trying to fix it. The problem is that almost all programs I use takes up 100% of my CPU usage. The only thing that doesn't are window's program but they also take up a lot of CPU usage. It is not the usual 1-3 sec of high CPU usage that all programs use. It is high CPU usage for a long period of time. A Youtube video causes my CPU to go to 100% just by playing it. Also, scans, surfing the web and other things cause it to go up. My computer runs really slow because of this. It is about 2-3 times slower. This is strange because my computer would rarely ever go over 60% for longer than 5 seconds. The memory amount taken up from my programs are not unusual. Its just that CPU part is way to high. I am un-able to play a game and open a web browser without massive lag on both programs. I have done everything I can. I did a restore for a day before this happened and it didn't work. I scanned for viruses with McAfee Microsoft essentials and Ad-ware antivirus and removed all threats. I have clean my computer with CCleaner and Advanced system care. I have scanned for spyware with spybot S&D, Superantispyware. I have checked for malware with Malewarebytes. But the problem is not solved. I really need the help. If you want me to download something to scan my computer I'm up for it because currently, I'm desperate.
Another thing. I have an Intel Core 2 Quad CPU. But, in msconfig, I cannot select 4 processors in advance options in the boot section. I only shows 1 for some reason. I could really use the help.

Hi,
In the Advanced Boot Option of the System Configuration window, if there is a tick in the box next to 'Number of Processors', click the box to remove it, click OK, click Apply and then OK in the previous window and then restart the PC for the change to take effect.

• Unusually high cpu usage with iMovie 6.0.3

I'm having trouble with very high cpu-usage. Just the open imovie app is taking up about 50%, during playback it sometimes peaks over 100%! The project file is pretty big (about 30 gig), but that is mainly because of the amount of footage imported into it. The movie itself is about 25 minutes in length. There is some audio editing going on: some soundeffects, musicfiles (no drm-protection), audio commentary that i recorded within imovie. I know that imovie has trouble when there is a lot of audio/audio editing involved and this project is probably a little more complex than other stuff i did in imovie, but i never had such problems. i can hardly use playback anymore. I recently updated Quicktime to 7.6.4 and Perian to version 1.2.1. Any ideas what's going on or how to work around the problems? Since the movie is about 80% finished i don't really want to start all over again. Thanks in advance for your input!

Hi Klaus1
I have several plug-ins by cfx and the slick volumes 4, 6 8 and 10. I can post a list of all of them if you like. Up to now they never made any trouble, but you'll never know...
The edit in the timeline is about 25 minutes long. But the project file contains captured dv-footage of about 2 hours, so that alone adds up to something like 26 GB. Then there are a few rendered effect-clips done with some of the plug-ins like stabilizing or color correction which also add to the 30 GB, as well as some audio-files (some music, my voice-over commentary). I emptied the trash several times while working on the movie. At this moment there are only a few MB of erased audio in it.
It all sounds a bit like this is an insanely huge and complex project, but as i said, i have done projects like this in imovie without the massive cpu-usage. I'd like to continue to use imovie, but if this problem keeps coming up with future projects, i might as well take the step and switch to Final Cut Express.
For now I will try your idea of exporting the movie as it is now and open it in a new project file.
Thanks for your help and input so far!

• Unusually high CPU usage

Looking at Activity Monitor it says % User 50-55, but adding up the cpu usage for the individual processes only totals 10-15%. It's running hot and the fans are fast and loud.
Any idea why this is happening? This just started recently, I thought it was due to 10.5.6 so I restored a back up I had of 10.5.5 which seemed to do the trick at first, but a few hours later the high cpu thing started again.

just went through the same process after weeks of frustration - bought a new battery but got only 80 to 100 minutes from it. After calibrating and zapping PRAM I got 4-5 hours on minimal power use, but soon the problem came back. I did not manage to find any help googling and searching support.apple,com. Now I looked at activity manager, and there at all processes, and ... bingo! PrintJobMgr was draining all the power... It's only then, when googling PrintJobMgr that I found this thread ... maybe this could be made more visible to other desperate users ...

• Ichatagent unusually high memory usage?

a few times in the last week or so, I have come home to find my MacBook's memory all but gobbled up by the ichatagent process.
Using activity monitor, it shows that ichatagent is using close to and sometimes OVER 1GB of memory (I have 4 GB installed). Typically it's using like 5MB, so I don't know what's up or if anyone else is seeing this. I mean, that's a 200% increase in usage, you know? Something's up.
It doesn't show up as not responding, and I can quit the process and all is well, but this is a Mac right, things are supposed to just work? why the heck is this process growing so much? Thank goodness I have lots of RAM and an idea of what I'm doing. What of the people that have the factory 1GB installed and can't figure out why their computer is so sluggish?

well I have one AIM account (that's actually an old .mac screen name), and bojour running. It didn't just happen once, I have observed the phenomenon on at least 3 different occasions. Quitting iChat isn't enough, either, the actual ichatAgent has to be force-quitted from the Activity Monitor in order to relinquish the RAM back to the rest of the system.
So, just those two instances are running at any one time, and it has happened multiple times. The only thing that has been common is that I have come home from work to notice this each time it has happened, after a long absence from the computer (when I get back the memory usage is 1GB). force-quitting the offending PID releases the memory. I have restarted it as well, and obviously that works, though it hasn't stopped it from happening again (the first time I saw the issue I did a restart).

• Unusual High Data Usage

During the last billing cycle I have been keeping close watch over my data usage when I noticed a 32.99 MB data usage appear. Today I go back to check my account because I see that my data usage has increased by a substantial amount again. I look back through my data usage and now see all of the data from before has 'magically' changed. The 32.99 MB usage has vanished and all new numbers have appeared. Along with one usage that is marked as 402.41 MB! This is an absurd amount of usage! Can someone explain what is going on with my data usage?
Just to cover some bases: I turn off my Mobile Data when I'm not using it. I use my wireless internet for most of my activity. I do not watch movies or play data dependent games on my phone. I check facebook periodically throughout the day, but almost always while I'm connected to the Wi-Fi.
My biggest concern is that the data usage on my 'My Verizon' page is changing. Not changing with new entries, but changing PREVIOUS entries that I've already viewed and talked to customer support about. My data is building up quickly and it's only the fourth day into my billing cycle. I'm already very concerned. I don't want to have to pay extra by the time the month is up.

We want you to have the best data plan to meet your needs meakerism! What plan do you have currently? What make and model device? How many users on your account? Fluctuation in data usage can occur often. Please be assured we bill accurately. My Verizon usage estimates can delay up to 48 hours. Have you brought these concerns to our attention previously?

• Unusually high memory usage?

After upgrading to Mavericks i took a gander at my activity monitor and realized that my computer consistently uses more than 7GB of memory regardless of the intensity with which i use it. Having iTunes and iMail open have my computer using 7.5 of my 8GB of RAM. What is going on/ what can i do to free up some memory?

Some people have reported Mavericks is faster and some slower. It certainly won't hurt to run large applications.
Before proceeding make sure you have a current backup. (This should be the case at all times and I mention it now just because you should run a backup before any system maintenance and especially when installing operating systems.)
Run Disk Utility and Verify Disk on your system volume, usually called Macintosh HD. If it shows errors then boot the recovery parttion (Boot Command-R) and run Disk Utiity from there, this time using Repair Disk. If it fails to repair the first time, run it again. If it fails to repair the second time then post back.
If there were disk errors in the first pass then you probably installed Mavericks over a filesystem that was not feeling well. This is a common source of slowness from any operating system installation. The remedy is to make sure it passes the Repair Disk test (which you just did) and then reinstall Mavericks over itself. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5477875?tstart=30 However, do not do this if it did not repair correctly.
While you are there run Repair Disk Permissions twice. It is likely to still report errors, even after the second pass. That is normal.
You can try running in the guest account or any other account. If it runs faster there then it is probably some third-party software in your account.
Good luck. May your Mac run faster soon.

• Unusually high CPU usage in Snow Leopard (10.6.1)

I upgraded from Leopard to 10.6.1 and the fans started to run a lot more often then they did in Leopard.
I checked 'Activity Monitor' and the processes that usually were consuming 99-100% CPU and heating up the notebook were Dashboard Client or SystemUIServer.
I uninstalled every third-party widget that I had and it still used to happen, on occasion.
After that, I decided to wipe out my hard disk and did a fresh install of Snow Leopard. Updated it to 10.6.1 and still have the same issue from time to time.
This is very annoying and eats up my battery when I'm away from the desk or on the go.
Any ideas on that? Thanks a lot.

You might want to check in on the MB forums for suggestions on how to best configure that computer under SL.

• Unusually high broadband usage

We have been having problems with our broadband usuage since March of this year, when we nearly went over the 40Gb. Then in April it suddenly shot up and went over our 40Gb allowance, up to 64GB. We have not changed the way we use the internet and we have never gone over our 40 Gb allowance in the past. According to BT you should be able to browse the internet for 120hrs with 40Gb!! I have now been in touch with BT on three occasions and it has not yet been resolved. We were advised to stop using the internet which we did only using it to check e-mails or the My BT usuage page and on using the internet for a total time of 30 mins in that one week, the BT usuage monitor said we had used 11GB!! I have now starting checking our home hub and looking to see what devices are connected to our Wi Fi and I have deleted any devices not recognised. However I noticed tonight that there are two devices back on which I don't recognise and have tried to delete but can't. I would really appreciate some help with this matter as I am reluctant to use the interent at present as it seems to use a lot more GB than it should.

Hi, welcome to the forum.
There have been a few similar posts to this recently. There are far more experienced posters who may be able to assist you further but I would be interested to know if you are using broadband TV - Netflix or similar? also I'm wondering about this cloud storage thing & if this uses monthly allowances?
You mention 2 devices that are not recognised. I do not use a home hub router but a netgear device - where I can secure wireless connections down to a mac address in a trusted device list. Not sure if this can be done with the HH.
Hope that you soon get this resolved.

• Firefox becomes really slow then eventually unresponsive when loading a page with many hires images. Unsual high memory usage up to 2gigs just for firefox. Was never a problem with v3.6.

When loading a page with many hires images, Firefox becomes really slow and scrolling becomes jumpy then eventually becomes completely unresponsive. Unusual high memory usage of up to 2gigs just for firefox when loading these pages. This was never a problem with v3.6.

I encountered the same type of problem. Firefox running terribly slowly and slowing down my entire machine (Core i5 with 256GB SSD). Searching the forums, I found a couple of things about troubleshooting performance issues, one of which was to use '''hardware acceleration''', that is on by default. It was turned on on my PC, '''so I tried deactivating it, and it worked!'''
So doing the exact opposite as Mozilla support said solved the problem. It is really a pain now to work with Firefox. I'm using it because I have no choice, but I'd recommend IE and Chrome over Firefox... Whatever, the market will decide once Firefox has become to crappy...

• ATSServer and MDWorker High CPU Usage

Lately, Activity Monitor shows 'ATSServer' and 'MDWorker' as using an unusually high cpu usage. I tried to google the issue and all that I found out is that ATSServer and MDWorker deal with Spotlight indexing.
Currently, Spotlight isn't indexing my drive. I've tried to force quit both processes. They relaunch and take up the CPU again. I've restarted the machine to no avail.
Help?

Thanks for posting! I've been in the same boat for the last few days, with my MacBook's fan howling at me as it indexed a giant zip file. *shakes fist at MacBook designers* It needs TWO fans, you lugnuts!
Never once did I consider simply adding my downloads drive to the "ignore" list. You've saved my sanity!

• Bandwith usage when Tethering

I am getting crazy high amounts of bandwith usage when tethering from my Moto X 2013 to my surface Pro 3. I have researched the topic, but have not found such high usage figures.
I have made an 18 minute video call from my Surface tethered to the Moto X (with high quality video), and it has used up 1.5 GB (gigabytes!) of data.
I do not remember getting anything like that when video calling over 4G with my Note 3.
Any ideas are greatly appreciated !
Thanks

Also tethering does use a unusually high rate of data you have to bear in mind packets of data don't always get there when sharing a connection bit devices are going to be using the same conection

• High CPU Usage in Word 2013

Hi everyone,
I'm having an issue with Word 2013 and I'm hoping someone can help. Seen as I got fleeced for my TechNet subscription this year (the price given on the invoice doubled when I called up to pay!) I’d very much like to see a speedy fix from the Microsofties
please! :D
Recently, I've found that Word will consistently exhibit high CPU utilisation, ~50% on a dual core second generation Core i5.
This continues, even when I’m not providing any input to or interacting with the Word window and even when the Word window is covered by other windows. Minimising Word causes its CPU usage to drop back down to zero.
The strange thing is that, so far, I’ve only observed this with a single document. I started writing this document at the start of this week and it’s been authored exclusively on Word 2013. In fact I’m the only one who’s editing it and I’ve only used a single
computer (and this one single install of Word 2013) to do so…
There’s nothing particularly unusual about this document, and a different but similar document which uses the same themes and features (in fact the theme for the second document was created from the first one) doesn’t appear to cause the same issues. Both
these documents are stored on SkyDrive, and are being edited directly from there.
Initially I tried the much recommended tweaks of disabling hardware graphics acceleration and sub-pixel positioning, however neither of these has had any effect.
I investigated a bit further using Sysinternals Process Monitor, and found that while Word is using a lot of CPU it’s actually looping very, very quickly polling for the existence of the registry key “HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Avalon.Graphics”.
This key doesn’t exist on my system, and a quick test I conducted where I created it just lead to Word looping polling for more non-existent registry keys.
My system is a HP Folio 13 running Windows 8 Pro x64 with Office 2013 (RTM, not Beta) 32 bit. Both Windows and Office are fully patched, as is everything else on the system.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.
Chris

Hello again,
After working on my problematic document some more, I believe I’ve found the cause of the issue.
@Microsofties – I think this one is either a bug or a dodgy OOTB template…
I noticed that the high CPU usage only seemed to occur when the document’s footer was displayed. Experimenting with some careful scrolling and zooming to hide footer (without actually using the “hide white-space” option) seemed to confirm this so I investigated
the footer a bit more.
My document was using the standard Word “Facet (Odd Page)” footer template with a couple of fields added to suit my needs, namely “Publish Date” and a page number.
The template seems to be structured such that the content of the footer is inside two nested text boxes (one inside the other). I also noticed previously that this footer template also appears to “jump” up each page and back down again as I scrolled.
So I deleted the footer and its text boxes, and recreated the same content, in the same position (using the standard paragraph alignment tools) by hand without the nested text boxes. This has, so far, fixed the issue!
I also noticed that the CPU usage dropped right down to idle the moment I deleted the nested text boxes.
Altogether, this leads me to conclude that the “Facet (Odd Page)” footer template in Word 2013 is the source of my issue. Specifically, I believe that the use of nested text boxes in this template causes Word’s interactions with the .Net 4.5 WPF to go a
bit nuts, as evidenced by the infinite loop of request for the non-existent “Avalon.Graphics” WPF registry key I mentioned previously.
It would be nice to see some feedback on this one, Microsoft people, if only to know if this is actually a general issue or is specific to my document!
Thanks, Chris

• Alerts from Norton re high memory usage by plugin-container.exe

Running Firefox 3.6.13 on Windows XP Pro Service Pack 3. The details from Norton are as follows:
1. Program Path C:\program files\Mozilla firefox\plugin-container.exe
2. Program Description - Plugin Container for Firefox
3. Memory - 1,676 MB used
4. Disk Write Activity - 10 MB (total for this process)
5. File Origin - Source File = updater.exe, File Created: firefox.exe,updater.exe,plugin-container.exe

Probably the alerts are nothing to worry about, and you may wish to suppress that particular alert.
On a couple of old spec legacy machines I recently switched.
Partly because of economics, and partly because , of the two,
Norton can perform better (in my opinion) on legacy machines.
The first thing I did notice was that Norton does pulse updates and background tasks very frequently (configurations can be changed) by default, and flags up quite a number of alerts.
The Norton (NIS) 'Insight' facility will be flagging up firefox plugin container.exe. It can be configured to suppress the alerts from firefox plugin container, but unless disabled will probably just flag up another busy process or application. It is not flagging it up because it is a known security problem, merely because of the amount of activity.
I imagine the alerts are when you are playing videos, probably with FlashPlayer, and may well depend on the resolution/quality of the videos.
If you think the results are unusual or unexpected see:
*[[High memory usage]]
*[[Firefox consumes a lot of CPU resources]]
PS not sure what is happening with this post are some phrases unacceptable eg alternative expressions about economics; one paragraph was behaving oddly in preview resorted to manually adding break tags to keep it within the container.
