  • Weird keyboard behavior in MacBook Pro 13'

Hi guys, I have a MacBook Pro that's starting to show a strange keyboard behavior.
The problem is that the keys: e r t y u i o (curiously all belong to the same row) sometimes get unresponsive.
It's very annoying of course and it happened about 4 months after upgraded to Lion.
The geneal perfomance of the laptop was deteriorated and I've read that a clean install of Lion might help so I've did it thinking that it will also fix any OS weirdness about the keys too.
The machine works way better after the clean Lion install but the problem of those same keys persist.
What I did next was to reset the PRAM thinking it might be interference from some weird state there. But after the reset the problem persisted.
Curiously, I've figured out that when, for example the i key gets unresponsive, if I press AND hold the e key then the i key works totally fine (think of typing an "I" but using e instead of shift).
If, when pressing the unresponsive keys, I use different angles or quantity of force in the pressure of the keys or cornes of the key the behavior stays the same. The only thing that seems to affect is holding the e key down before pressing it. Every time it gets weird I do it and it kind of get normal for a while.
Also, sometimes, keeping some seconds the unresponsive key ends up getting responsive again (but not always).
This mac has about two years now and it's very well preserved.
Do this happen to anyone? ideas?
Is there some other thing than PRAM I could reset to see if it gets normal again?

You are making me dig into nightmare-ish memories here.
    Ok, I'll share.
    This is how turned out:
Needed to send my MBP to another town with an Apple authorized service provider and asked to change the keyboard for a new one.
It was ~20 days waiting until they got the new keyboard part from Apple and about ~3 more to get it fixed and ~2 more to get it again in town.
I received it very well packaged and all was fine after that but the whole thing was very expensive, ~40% of the price I paid for the whole MPB in the first place plus all that time without being able to use it.

  • Random freezing and odd keyboard behaviors on 10.5.8

My random freezing started on 10.5.6. Updated to 10.5.7 and the problem persist. I have decided to upgrade to 10.5.8. Everything seemed fine for a day and a half. Then all of a sudden random freezing when starting, login, wake from sleep, etc.. and now odd keyboard behaviors. function keys randomly work when computer is not frozen.
I have tried every option listed in the discussions here and elsewhere. Does anyone have the same problems?

    I have tried so far:
disk permissions repaired from dvd and startup,
disk first aid, cleaned caches, virus checked, zapped the pram, reset power management, ran apple hardware check, ran disk warrior, trashed network prefs, deleted sleep image, replaced directory with techtool pro, tried new user account, re-updated, removed 3rd party software, and nothing works?????

  • Strange keyboard behavior - odd characters

My friend's Macbook is acting weird. All the keys on the keyboard type correctly except the "H" and "V" keys. When typing a lower case "h", a superscript dot appears. Shift-"H" gives you a capital "O" with an accent mark over it. The "V" key doesn't do anything but give you a sound like you're running up against the end of something and can't input a character.
I've monkeyed around with the input menu to make sure US Qwerty was the only keyboard layout selected. Tried switching to something else and back to US Qwerty. Still nothing.
Any ideas what's going on here?

I am also having strange laptop keyboard behavior, but a little different than inserting odd characters.
While I'm inputting text, the cursor may jump back to the beginning of a text field or to the middle of a sentence and resume, resulting in a jumble of letters. Sometimes the cursor jumps multiple lines or letters ahead. When I try entering three of the same letters, it will only enter two, unless I insert the cursor manually. And all of this is intermittent.
Has my keyboard gone wacko? I've tried looking for possible keyboard viruses in Google, but nothing seems to match the symptoms. Also, the space bar under the track pad seems a little tight—doesn't always fell like it clicks when I press it.
    Any ideas?

  • Need Help with Unusual Table Behavior

I've been asked to create a table with unusual behaviors, and I'm a little stuck on how to implement it. The table has cells with dates and blanks in it. The following rules need to work:
    1. If the cell has a date in it, then:
    a. If the user single-clicks on the cell, the cell should be selected. At most, the date could be highlighted and copied, but not changed
    b. If the user double-clicks on the cell, a popup window should appear that allows entry of detailed data about the date. This overrides the default behaviors of entering edit mode on double-click.
    c. If the user presses F2, the cell should enter edit mode and allow the user to edit or remove the date. This prevents the user from accidently changing an existing date, which is supposed to be a rare occurance anyway.
    2. If the cell has no date, then:
    a. If the user single-clicks a cell, double-clicks a cell, or uses the keyboard to navigate to a cell and then begins typing, the cell should enter edit mode and allow the user to enter a date. Once a valid date has been entered, the rules for #1 apply.
    Optional:
The user can remove a date by clearing the date, but it would be nice if they could select multiple dates for deletion.
Any ideas would be appreciated. Right now, I'm stuck on how to make the cell editable with a single click depending on whether there is a date already in it.

Fair enough, but in all the topics I've seen on this site, I almost never see someone respond once they've been given an answer to their question. Now, you may not like this, but the fact remains that this is how this particular forum works, and if you want help from the regulars here it's in your best interest to stick to the forum rules. Arguing about it almost never helps your case. (Personally I don't care much either way, but that's just me and as you can see from my posting history I'm not here very often so my opinion doesn't matter much.)
Finally, if you want help on JTables in particular, camickr is your man, so you might want to stay on his good side :-)In that thread you cited, it's fair to point out that the person never responded, but calling him a louse, etc. was uncalled for and unprofessional. If someone had politely said that I should reply to my other threads, I would have apologized and moved on. However, that's not what happened. I was called out in a way intended to humiliate me for 2 instances, not for my failure to reply, but for failing to reply quickly enough. That's what I found to be so ridiculous, and hence, my sarcasm. In the third instance, perhaps I should have responded with a "thank you" to the second response that I received. I'll take my lumps for that one. I also took offense to the suggestion that I only replied to my previous thread because I wanted help on this one. That was just a baseless accusation.
And for the record, the reason that I'm responding to this topic so quickly is that my email notifications are working this time. I do check my watchlist when I have a question that needs answering, but if I get pulled off onto another task, I may not check it for a while. I can't help that.

  • IPhone 6 - keyboard freezes in landscape

I searched and found lots of old keyboard talk, but nothing answering this.
Upgraded to iPhone 6. The keyboard works perfectly when holding the phone in normal use position (portrait).  But when I rotate the phone to lanscape position, it usually just freezes. Keyboard appears but nothing happens when you press keys. Rotate back to portrait, works fine.  Every once in a while, but rarely, the keyboard will work in landscape.  I've tried installing two third party keyboards, same issue with them.  I've tried hard reset, no fix. It did this with original software and continues after 8.0.2 install.
I haven't seen anyone else talk about this problem. Is it just me?  Anyone have ideas on a fix?
    RIck

Do you have a specific app that might cause it to go funny, try un-syncing apps then see if it sires it, if it does bring them back one by one. i had a similar issue with an app that caused screen to lock out.

  • [solved] xorg 1.8 strange keyboard behavior

I've updated to xorg 1.8 on my MSI VR630 laptop.
But now some keys trigger two keypress events.
    Examples:
    * [Del] triggers [Del] and [Print]
    * [Down] triggers [Down] and [Enter]
    * [Ins] triggers [Ins] and [/]
    and so on.
    EDIT:
I overlooked that kbd setings had been overwritten by /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-evdev.conf.
Had to disable evdev keyboard section.

    Nothing ?
Switchng off hal deamon and cleaning ~/.kde* has no effect...
So, after searching on google again an again, still nothing found.... even among the Ubuntu specific issue where post are terminated
with "wait next version of the package", the windows-style answer.
I will continue my attempts to fix this... but my conclusion about this is that hal was more precise in his behavior than udev...

  • Weird keyboard behavior PS CS3

    Hi all,
Every now and then it seems like my keyboard has gone nuts.
This always happens inside PS CS3. After doing some actions, especially when doing a 'Shift-Alt-Arrow key' action (duplicating a layer or group and moving), it looks as if the keyboard goes in some sort of 'Alt-Always-On' modus.
The annoying thing about this is, that regular keyboard-shortcuts for selecting a tool don't work (pressing 't' for the type tool does nothing) but far worse is the fact when you want to move a layer or group of layers they get unwantedly duplicated.
Sometimes this behavior seems to disappear, when I click around my desktop (outside of Photoshop), but sometimes it doesn't disappear. The only thing left to get rid of it is to quit and relaunch PS.
Does anyone else have this problem, and how can it be solved.
This weird keyboard thing does only appear in PS, every other application is not affected by it.
I'm running PS CS3 on Windows XP SP3
I have all updates of PS CS3 installed

    Zeno,
I feel so stupid, but that also crossed my mind.
And to be honest, I think that is really the reason.
Why didn't I think of that before...

  • Strange keyboard behavior - multiple repetition of a character

I have a wireless Apple keyboard. From time to time keyboard locks into repeating multiple instances of a character, i.e. pppppppppppp and is doing that until I switch off the keyboard and reinstall bluetooth connection through the passkey.
How I can cure this strange behavior? Is anyone else experiencing the same problem?
    Thanks

Yes! I'm gettttttttttting the same issue! It happens randommmmmmmly with my apple bluetooth keyboard and drives me insane. (I didn't edit my typing.)
Also, sommetimes the the characters are slow to react after I have typed them and other times it's fine. The keyboard is always the same distance away from my powerbook.
What is the problem? Can Apple support answer one of these tttttthreads please?!

  • Strange keyboard behavior after OS 4.2.1 upgrade

When typing (at least, so far, in Safari) the keyboard will randomly (or so it seems) retract after typing a letter, instead of that letter being registered in the text box. It's necessary to re-locate the insertion point back in the text box to bring the keyboard back. And when I do, then the caps lock is on even though it wasn't before. This happens every few characters, but unpredictably.

I'm getting this too. Been looking all over the Internet to find other people with the same problem.
Its very annoying, and I'm not touching any other part of the screen - it does exactly what the OP describes, and it seems to do it all the time, when I'm typing. Only noticed it in safari because that is all I type in, and strangely enough it is not happening as I type this, and when it does happen i make sure the webpages are fully loaded. Very strange and very frustrating
I'm also finding that rss feeds aren't updating, but thats a different problem.

  • Strange keyboard behavior

I am filling out a form, but mistyped a character. When I any button in the keyboard, including the backspace key, the keyboard goes away. I doesn't do this everywhere, just on the ATT my account page.
    Any suggestions?

Can you provide a bit more info?
I do understand this occurs on the at&t account page. Is this at&t wireless website? or another at&t website?
And is it occurring during Login of the account or another area?
Thanks for any extra info. It helps us all better understand how to better assist.

  • Please Help - Highly Unusual AddressBook Behavior

I'm having a really strange problem with Apple's address book that I was hoping somebody could give me a hand with.
For some reason, every time I open the address book app, no application window opens, though I do see the 'address book' app menu appear in the finder's menu bar. The only way I can get the address book application to appear is by going to the 'Window' menu and choosing the menu option 'Address Book'.
Doing so does cause the app's main window to appear, however the problem that occurs at this point is that it doesn't allow me to click anything on the window (meaning I cannot select any of my contacts because clicking doesn't highlight them or do anything).
In tinkering with it a bit, I've discovered that the only way I can actually select anything (and thereby even use the address book) is do the following:
    -- Choose 'address book' from the 'window' menu, wait for the un-clickable window to appear, then drag the lower right-hand corner of the window to resize the apps main window... Doing so causes the address book window to appear all white (as if it has frozen and is about to force quit itself ~ +though it's not frozen+);
    -- Then I press Cmd+W to close the white window;
-- Finally, I then if I go to the 'window' menu one more time and choose 'address book', it hides the white address book window from view, and selecting it a second time immediately afterwards, brings the address book window to the front again and I can now click on it and use it normally...
As I stated in my post I realize that this is a highly unusual phenomenon and I really don't expect anyone here have an answer for what the heck is going on!
I have done the following troubleshooting steps to try to fix the issue myself, and nothing has worked:
-- I've trashed the address book preference file
-- I've temporarily disabled MobileMe & Google Contacts Syncing (which are both normally enabled)
-- I've used Disk Utility repair permissions
-- I've used Cocktail to run a battery of maintanence techniques (such as emptying caches, running daily weekly and monthly cron scripts, cycling logs, etc...)
-- I have of course restarted several times,
-- And I've tried restoring an old exported 'Address Book Archive' file
Needless to say, nothing has fixed my problem!!
I would be beyond grateful if anyone could help me out with this issue, as I've run out of options here...
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated... thanks for your help!

Create a new account, name it "test" and see how your AddressBook works in that User acct? (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.) This account is just for test, do nothing further with it.
Open System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" make it an admin account.
If the problem is present in the test account also, then it is systemwide. In this case try repairing this with the 10.5.5 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.
If the problem does not appear in the test account try starting in "Safe Mode" (It will take a bit more time to startup because it runs a directory check first).
If that works go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login Items and remove them. Boot normally and test. If there are still problems, go to ~(yourHome)/Library/Contextual Menu Items and move whatever is there to the desktop. Then do the same with /Library/Contextual Menu Items. Lastly, try moving /Users/Home)/Library/Fonts to your desktop and restarting.
Log out/in or restart, if that sorts it start putting items back one at a time until you find the culprit.
    Let us know.

  • Performa 6360 flaky keyboard behavior

I've been helping my church sort out some donated computers for our yard sale, and have come across the following problem...
I plug a known good keyboard & mouse (work fine on a PowerPC 6400) into a Performa 6360...
The performa powers up using the keyboard, will also do a force quit and regular power down.....but the mouse does not work, and none of the typical keyboard shortcuts either (tab through icons, etc.)...
I was able to boot to the restore CD, but unable to move the highlight to it and use it....
Weird.....only thing I can think of is that someone mapped some off the wall new shortcuts, since the power & a few other keys work, and the keyboard & mouse check out fine on another machine....any suggestions?

I don't know whether or not your background is more PC-oriented, but I should have mentioned that ADB devices shouldn't be connected/disconnected while the Mac is ON. Though I've never done so to confirm it, hot-plugging can damage the device and/or bus.
If the mouse problem were caused by badly-corrupted PRAM, pulling the battery likely cleared it. It's possible that the first keyboard may not be damaged, however if it causes the same quirk again on the 6360 or a different Mac, I'd discard it. As for the system battery, it's drained each time the unit is disconnected from A/C power. If the computer were sitting in storage for a while, the battery may have little reserve power left in it. Does the computer retain the correct date/time after being shut down and unplugged? If not, check the battery with a voltmeter. A new/good one should measure 4.5 volts. If it's significantly less (3.5 volts), it ought to be replaced. Those Rayovac 870/871 alkaline batteries can be found online for about $7. Because they're alkaline-based, they'll eventually leak and damage the motherboard, if left in the computer after being fully-discharged.
