Unusual network issues.. some programs work fine... others not.
I'm staying at a small hotel and was pleased to discover they had wireless Internet access so I won't have to go to the local Internet cafe to do my work. Or so I thought. I connected easily to their network and immediately went to Speedtest.net to test out the connection. 150ms ping time, 263kbps down, 213kbps up. Believe me, that's the best you're gonna get here in Tobago. Fast enough for me to do my work (which requires multiple Remote Desktop Connection sessions). Here's were it gets weird. First thing I noticed is that Adium quickly connects to MSN and AIM but cannot connect to Yahoo. Countless reboots and reopening of Adium do nothing. I find Mail sluggish at times. Frequently my mailboxes show the connection error symbol however hitting the "Get Mail" button will rectify this. Browsing works fine. Relatively speedy and no issues with any specific kinds of content. Skype seems to be working fine. Remote Desktop Connection can't connect to anything.
I'm more an Applications Programmer type so I'm not too knowledgeable about the intricacies of network protocols. Anyone have any insight what would cause behavior like this? I seriously doubt they are blocking certain protocols. They seem the types that have just enough knowledge to plug in their wireless router and give it password.
Well.. I'm off to the Internet cafe. If you have any suggestions... feel free to pass them along. I'd rather do my work from the hotel.
Only thing I can think of tht you might have control over, might be to change the MTU, some Routers don't work right with the default 1500.
You can test it with a temporary change by using Terminal, with...
sudo ifconfig en1 mtu 1460
or...
sudo ifconfig en1 mtu 1400

Since you have already done some sort of reset on your Airport Express, you might as well make sure it was a "hard reset" - follow the instructions for a hard reset found at:

Since your Mac is running Leopard, you need to configure the Airport Express using the Airport Utility found in the Applictions->Utilities folder. You cannot install the old software that was supplied on the CD you got with the Airport Express.
In future - if you do something bad with network settings on your Mac, do NOT try to fix it with the Airport Utility. The Airport Utility is only used to configure the Airport Express - and since the problem you have created is on the Mac and not the Airport Express, there is no need to be using the Airport Utility and especially there is no need to be resetting the Airport Express. -
Time Capsul "Guest Network" has gone down and cannot resuscitat. Main Network and back up working fine. Suggestions?
Cisco DPQ 2925 is according to Cisco.....a modem/router or gateway type of device that combines the functions of a modem and router in one package. See info below:

Unfortunately, the guest network feature will not work correctly when the AirPort is connected to the type of "modem" that you have. If that feature is important to you, please check with your Internet service provider and ask them if they can provide a simple modem.....not a modem/router or gateway.
Ironically, we have seen a few posts from users who claim to be able to get the guest network to work with the type of "modem" that you have, but to do so will result in what is known as a Double NAT error on the network......basically two devices both trying to act as the router for the network.
That can result in IP address conflicts and other issues created by the Double NAT such as slow browsing, no browsing, poor communications between devices on the network\, and other unpredictable things.
Sometimes, you can get away with a Double NAT issue on a simple home network, but I would not recommend this type of setup. -
I just updated itunes and started to update my phone to iSo5 when wireless connection was lost on my laptop, I can't get it back and it says there are no networks available-router is working fine, am using it on my iPhone now. Help!
Reboot your router. You by chance dont have a netgear N300 WNR2000 router do you? I had one of those and would lose wifi on it constantly, Switched to a Cisco wifi router and it works much better.

time capsule first said the back up was delayed, now it won't connect to my home network. my internet is working fine and so is everything else but when i try to connect to the time capsule it says to check my server and ip address and if it continues to contact system administrator.. i didnt change anything, please help!
Lion networking.. just need to reboot everything.. modem TC and the clients.. then it will work.. Sometimes just the TC is enough.. sometimes just the computer. .. Vista golden networking award.. did you turn it off and on again??

i have an ipad 2 the itunes program worked fine at first but now it will not connect to the store. it says 'secure link to itune store failed' i have uninstalled it and reinstalled it. what do i do?
Doublechecking before proceeding. Is iTunes endlessly saying "Accessing iTunes Store"? Or is something a bit different going on?

My iphone 5 seems to be stuck in the horizontal view when I'm in the message mode. In all other views I can turn the phone 90 degrees and horizontal to vertical works fine. Not sure what the problem is.
I found a solution!
Perhaps this is just temporary, but I have my display up and working again.
Although the symptoms are different were a bit different, the solution here worked:

As I was able to connect to my HD via an external monitor, in the finder, I went to:
1. Macintosh HD --> System --> Library --> Extensions
2. From there I moved all of the files that started with ADM and ATI (19 in total for me) to a folder on my desktop. (You will need to enter your admin password for this)
3. Next was a restart.
4. Then my display started working again.
5. After that, I transferred the files back into my Extensions folder.
6. I then did another restart with my fingers crossed and breath held. It worked.
Also... During the last few days of trying to find a fix, I restored a Mavericks backup to my computer away from Yosemite.
I'm very sure this problem occurred when I put my MBP to sleep, disconnected the power in its sleep, while something was connected to a USB port and unplugging the USB device (for me an iPhone charger) while the MBP was closed.

Hi, when I download wmv files on my MacBook Air I cannot get any sound on the videos. Youtube videos work fine but not wmv files. Can anybody help please?
Install Flip4Mac which allows you to play wmv files.

My Macbook (2009 White) Has had water spilled onto it, it all works apart from the screen. When connected to an external display it works fine, just not on the Macbook itself. Does anyone know how to fix this?
Take it to Apple and ask them to fix the physical damage the water caused.

Flash Player 10 not working in some sites, working fine in others
Lately I've been having problems viewing videos with Flash Player on many sites in which they viewed fine previously. What I see is a solid black rectangle the size of the video screen. No Player controls. Nothing. I have looked at the page code, but found nothing out of the ordinary. The system on this machine is XP Pro with SPII, and the problem occurs whether using IE 8 or Firefox 3.6.3. The "about" display showed that I had Falsh Player 10.0.32.18 installed on my system, so I downloaded 10.0.45.2 and installed it, hoping that would resolve the problem. Nope.
Presently, going to http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ via either IE of Firefox shows that I have version 10.0.45.2 properly installed. The animation plays fine in both browsers.
Today a friend of mine graduated from Temple University in Japan, The graduation cerimony was streamed live (3:30 in the morning my time). I could not watch it. That site was http://www.tuj.ac.jp/graduation2010/video.html The hosting site is UStream, specifically http://www.ustream.tv/channel/tuj-2010-graduation I cannot get any videos on UStream to open. All I see is a black rectangle. My friend's mother had no problem wathing the cerimony with Firefox on her laptop.
Other sites that worked fine recently but no longer ply videos at all on this system are Fox News and NBC News. I have no problem watching Al Jazeera news videos, but their videos post on UTube. I have no problem watching videos on UTube. BBC news videos also run fine, as do videos from many other sites. It makes no difference if I accept or block cookies on the sites that cnnot play the videos. What is different about these sites than the others?

http://espn.go.com/video/category?id=3461971 as an example. but I have no problem watching videos on that site or any other videos on ESPN. Instructions given in the first thread said to delete several files from the C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash folder, but I had none of the files lilsted.
Is there somthing in my Registry that needs to be tweaked? Is there someting that my antivirus program (Bitstream) may have whacked? I really would like to fix this problem.

I gave you my BitDefender work-around to help you in dealing with others who have a conflict with Flash Player and BitDefender, not because I was trying to make Flash Player conform to BitDefender. When I first wrote in yesterday I did not know BitDefender was the problem. You've indicated that may well be the case. I'm trying to work with BitDefender to fix their program before their next release, and they are trying to work with me. If BitDefender breaks Flash Player, than it should be in Adobe's interest to get BitDefender to stop breaking Flash Player, as well as Microsoft's and Mozilla's if BitDefender breaks their browsers. I'm just caught in the middle.
The last thing you asked was for me to go to the Flash test sight. You said, "If you don't have the SWF plug-in, this test should tell you." I replied that all I could assertain from the site was that I had version 10.0.45.2 installed — no mention of the SWF plug-in. Did that mean I had the SWF plug-in installed? I don't know.

I found Ad-Aware to be an excellent spy-ware blocker. That's what I bought it for back before they added in there own antivirus program. Upgrading to the latest version of Ad-Aware included the antivirus program, whether I wanted it or not. I didn't, so I ticked the check-box to disable it. It seems what were once good programs by themselves now try to be all-encompassing, jack-of-all-trades suites.
I liked Norton antivirus when Peter Norton was the creative force behind the program, but later iterations created havoc with my systems, so I looked for a replacement antivirus program. BitDefender had a far superior antivirus program to most others on the market when I first bought it. All I wanted in upgrading to its latest version was an improved antivirus engine, but like Ad-Aware, it has now tried to add in too many features, such as the browser toolbars. I have uninstalled BitDefender several times. The problems it created remained, leaving holes in my Registry where there once were entries, blocking Photoshop's licensing files. You indicated you had worked with other's who had conflicts with Flash Player and BitDefender.

Computer is a desktop running Windows Vista. IE will not open either saying "there is a problem and shutting down". My laptop with Firefox 3.6 works fine.

I am using a MacBook Pro. Bought in April 2011. Upgraded to Lion, OSX 10.7.3
I have an Apple mail account that synced with a gmail account in my Mail Program.
I then chose the CLOUD activation. I can find my mail if I go to cloud.com but I no longer get any Apple mail delivered to my Mail program on my computer. My gmail account syncs just fine. In fact, the Mail program doesn't even open any longer when I double click. I have to go to the Mail menu, select Message Viewer to even view my mail program now. The Internet connection is testing fine using the Connection Doctor. But when the Connection Doctor program just whirs for eternity and never finishes checking the accounts.
Is this a bug? Do you have to set up your mailbox again for Apple mail to get it to sync after having mail hosted on the Cloud? Or does hosting on the Cloud mean I now always have to go the hassle of logging in at the cloud site to even access my Apple mail?
Any ideas out there? I am sure there are Mac geniuses, the real ones, floating around in cyber space and would love to get some intelligent directions to solve this new issue.

AnneI would like to add that Comcast is my internet provider. Perhaps that is part of the issue although the Connection Doctor confirms the mail box is connecting to the internet. No other function processes when Connection Doctor program is used to find the source of the issue. I have read forum posts but am unable to find a way to get my Apple mail to be delivered to my computer. It worked fine up until I chose to transfer mail to the Cloud. My mail account is a .mac account.
Still hoping someone out there can help me.
