Unusual red vertical lines on screen

My screen is showing vertical redlines but only on certian parts of the screen as can be seen in this screenshot
https://public.me.com/ix/daniel_pierce/screenshot1.png
Is this a hardware issue or something that can be fixed in software?
My computer is an 24" white Intel iMac(late 2006) bought March 2007.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks Dan

So here's my followup on this issue:
After some research, I decided that it was worth the effort to bring it to an Apple Genius at an Apple store last Thursday. The Genius spent a few minutes looking at and felt that it was one of three things: the display, the graphics board or the cable between the display and the graphics board. The cable cost $13, the board $180 and the display was $500. Needless to say, I was hoping it was the cable. I left the iMac with them so they could work on it.
The following Saturday, I got a call from the same Apple Genius that I had talked to and he said it wasn't the cable. He mentioned that the other parts were on order and that it would be a few more days before they could fix the computer.
Yesterday, i got the call that it was fixed and ready for me to pick up. As it turned out, it was the board. So the with the cost of the board plus the flat $49 repair fee, it cost me $230 to have it repaired. Since this was the only time I had ever had an issue over the last 4 years, I felt it was a fair price to pay for keeping it working.
Funny aside: I mentioned to the Apple Genius that while they had the iMac open, could they look at the optical slot drive. It was no longer accepting discs. When I got the iMac back, taped to the front was a transflash-to-sd-flash card adapter. Obviously, either my 3 year old or 5 year old tried to load it thru the slot drive. "Fixing" the drive was covered under the flat $49 fee.

  • Re: Red vertical lines on screen???

i just had a hinge replaced on first generation 15" unibody(2008) model. get home and i have red vertical blotches on screen. the red blotches are worse when there is black. i don't have applecare so i'm going to a local guy. the screen had stopped working because of hinge. i bought the hinge on ebay and didn't end up needing it BUT now my display is screwed. should i replace inverter cable? where can i buy one? thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You might check ifixit for inverter cables:
    http://www.ifixit.com/search?x=0&y=0&text=inverter+cable#20
PowerBook Medic is another possible source.
Not sure just which cable you might need--probably see what went through the broken hinge and what is damaged. I believe there is also a LVDS cable as well as an inverter cable. The LVDS cable carries video data, and the inverter cable controls the backlight and brightness.
Check also with whoever repaired the hinge. There may be a warranty on the repair which might cover the cable.
    Good luck!

  • Why are there 2 thin red vertical lines on the screen of my MBP 15" retina which is only 2 months old!

I would just like to understand why there a two thin red vertical lines on the screen
I suspect I need to bring into an apple store for diagnostics but is anyone aware of the likely cause?
    thanks v much!

It could be a GPU issue, a display issue or a display connection issue.  The genius bar technician will offer you a definitive answer and should fix it under the warranty provisions.

  • I have a red vertical line on the right side of my screen and it will not go away tried restarting my computer and that didn't help at all, please help me with this problem it is kind of annoying

I have a red vertical line on the right side of my screen and it will not go away tried restarting my computer and that didn't help at all, please help me with this problem it is kind of annoying

If it's a thin 1 pixel wide vertical line it's highly likely it could be caused by a defective LCD.
One quick basic way to check is to note the position of the line. Then go to System Preferences, Displays, and lower the resolution. If ther line moves it's on the video and the logic board or video card if fitted is likely to be defective. If the line stays in the same position it's likely to be an LCD fault. Either way to have it repaired you'll need to visit an Apple store or AASP.
The worst offender for this problem is the Late 2006 17" iMac. FOC replacement of the LCD used to be covered by a quality program, but it's now ended.

  • Red vertical line on left side of iPhone4 screen.

I have a thin, red vertical line on the left side of my iPhone screen that appears on a black or dark background.  Anyone know what causes this and should I send my phone in for repair?  I've had this phone for about 3 months.  Thanks!

    Hi Brent,
I took it to apple service center. They did some checks and found out that the display has gone bad and they replced it with new one.
Did you try connecting other display (may be Apple Display or Dell monitor) using an adapter?  In my case the Apple service center people tried doing it and the display was appearing just fine without any green line. So the fault was in my MBP display.

  • What is the white horizontal line and red vertical line on my brand new ipad mini?

Bought a brand new ipad mini 2 for my sons Christmas, took it out the box and it was during the set up process, ie entering his iTunes and icloud account, a white horizontal line and a red vertical line appeared on the screen and is there all the time now.  Have tried switching off and on and resetting, but it is still there.  Any ideas??

    Hi Tolmivooz,
So the lines didn't appear until you were into the setup?
Does the orientation of the lines change when you rotate the screen?
Thanks for trying the restart and reset. Please see if a restore helps.

  • Red vertical lines in monitor

Hello, for the past year I red vertical lines have been appearing in my screen, sometimes they dissapear if I move the monitor, but now they appear more frequently.
    What should I do?
    This question was solved.

    Hi there:
Looks like an issue with connection to display cable or display hardwares.
Do a hard reset and check again: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01684768
Is the vertical line present while you enter BIOS - tap away ESC or f10 as soon as you power on and check.
What about when connected to external display?

  • Green vertical lines on screen

dvd player sony model dvp ns57p has green vertical lines on screen.  any suggestions.  get a new playler blueray?

    Please try the steps below:
Adjust the color settings on your TV to make sure the issue is not a simple screen adjustment.
Make sure the disc player is properly connected. The disc player should be connected directly to a TV or Audio/Video (A/V) receiver. It should not be connected to a VCR. This issue can occur if a video signal encrypted with copyright protection passes through a VCR.
NOTE: When the disc player is connected through an A/V receiver, you should also check the connections between the A/V receiver and the TV.
If using A/V cables, check that the red, white, and yellow plugs are securely connected to the same colored jacks on both the disc player and TV (or A/V receiver).
If using component cables, check that the red, green, and blue plugs are securely connected to the same colored Y/P B /P R jacks on both the disc player and TV (or A/V receiver).
If using an S-Video cable, check that it is securely connected to both the disc player and TV (or A/V receiver).
Try playing a different disc to see if the issue only occurs with the one disc.
If the issue is occurring with more than one disc, replace the cables connecting the disc player to the TV (or A/V receiver).
NOTE: When the disc player is connected through an A/V receiver, you should also try changing or replacing the cable between the A/V receiver and TV.
Try connecting the disc player to different input jacks on the TV (or A/V receiver) and change the input mode accordingly to determine if the issue is with a particular input jack.
Try playing another video source (such as a VCR) to determine whether or not the issue only occurs with the disc player.
If the issue occurs with other video sources, then the problem is with the TV (or A/V receiver).
If the issue only occurs when using the disc player, then the disc player may require service.

  • RED VERTICAL LINE IN MIDDLE OF PLAYER

I  just downloaded "adobe flash player 10.1" It plays my clips but there is  a
Red vertical line running down the middle of the player. My system is
    Windows 7 Home Premium
    x64-based PC
I use Explorer 8 as my browser, i have tried Firefox and Wyco and those don't even play.
    Please help
    thanks.

Hi, In addition to using the 32bit browser, did you run the Adobe Installer prior to Installing? This is needed to Uninstall all old versions from all browsers first.
If you have done that, did you Install the Flash Player for IE and then also for FF(Firefox & other browsers) I am not familiar with Wyco.

  • Fix for vertical lines and screen freeze on 2008 iMac after Yosemite upgrade?

Mavericks was running slow with iPhoto.  Did the Yosemite upgrade.  Vertical lines on screen before everything freezes except mouse.  Mouse continues to respond but nothing else, so forced to power off.  Tried a revert to Mavericks but that seemed to tick it off (made things worse).  Read 3 year old threads that graphics drivers may be at fault, but not sure how to remedy that.  Any ideas?

    Hi wokingmac,
If you are having an issue with your iMac display not responding appropriately, I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -

  • Red vertical lines at timeline while rendering+saving

Sometimes I get red vertical lines at timeline while rendering+saving my projects. What do they mean?

System ==> Mac mini (late 2009), CPU: 2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, RAM: 2GB 1066MHz DDR3, OS: Mac OS X Version 10.6.5. Adobe products ==> Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 & Adobe Premiere Elements 9 (including Adobe Elements 9 Organizer)
Please notice that the the red vertical lines appear only in the TIMELINE and not to the video (rendered and/or exported) itself! I would guess that it has to do with the quality of the video, or with the fact that it is not rendered and these are the "difficult" pieces of the video, but I don't know so ... it would only be a guess.

  • 22" ACD DVI showing red vertical lines

I have recently obtained a used ACD from a design office's back room. Aside from a cracked easel that was easliy replaced the unit appeared to be fine. However, when I powered it on, I get maybe 6-7 thin, red vertical lines down one side of the display. The whole group of lines is maybe 1-2 inches wide and each line is only a pixel or two wide. When I get a chance, I will post pictures of what I am seeing. If there is an internal part I can replace I'll do so.
Has anyone else run across this? My search for 'vertical line' did not turn up any results in here.

I'm surprised your search for "vertical line" didn't turn anything up. There is a thread like five down from yours with vertical lines in its subject line.

  • HT3964 vertical lines on screen

Monitor has developed vertical lines down screen. Was told by Apple Store that it would cost $85 to look at it and being so old parts would most likely be available. Are parts still available?

In all fairness, I think you may agree that a 6 year life for a computer and monitor is generally considered reasonable, even in the PC world.  And I seriously doubt, if the monitor itself is failing, you'd be able to find the parts to fix a 6 year old LCD PC monitor.  Best wishes.
    Hope this helps
