Unwanted add-on installed without authorization.

An add-on was installed to my Firefox browser without my authorization. I could not remove the add-on with Firefox or Widows programs removal, had to use Advance Installer Pro to remove it from my computer. However the search engine "Snap.do" kept on running every time I open a new tab even after removing and reinstalling Firefox and selecting the option of a blank page when I open a new tab.
The add-on name is "Snap.do"

In your "More system details", it indicates that snap.do is your address bar search provider. An easy way to fix that (and any other search oddities) is this add-on: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/searchreset/
Regarding a new tab, you get a snap.do page if you press Ctrl+t? If the add-on is gone, you can update this setting as follows:
(1) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
(2) In the filter box, type or paste '''newtab''' and pause while the list is filtered
(3) Double-click the '''browser.newtab.url''' preference and enter the desired value:
''(i) Page thumbnails (default)''
about:newtab
''(ii) Blank tab''
about:blank
''(iii) Built-in Firefox home page''
about:home
''(iv) Any other page''
full URL to the page
Press Ctrl+t to open a new tab and verify that it worked. Fixed?

  • Flash update installing unwanted add ons

This is a note of protest. The most recent Flash update began downloading and installing Google Toolbar and Chrome, without my permission or allowing an option to deselect it. I am a loyal Adobe fan, and owner of Acrobat and this crosses a line and is making me think twice about continuing with Adobe products if such incidents continue to occur. I understand that with free products, like Flash, there are compensations in partnering and advertising, but it is never ok to install, without user choice, any unwanted software without permission. Adobe, you wouldn't want to offer me a ride in your car and then I invite 5 of my friends to jump in without your permission, would you? Please respect your users rights and privacy and stop this practice.
I am only asking for being given the choice, as it is with most every other respectable software developers. I have no problem with add on offers, just please do it respectfully.
    Thank you,
    MichaelB

    Thanks Chris for your comments.
I agree that the upgrade process should give us the opportunity to opt out of third party software.  What MichaelB and I both wanted to bring to your attention is that for the mowt recent update the process that should work did not.  I installed the update on two computers, and on both did not get an opt-out option.
I do not know why it did not give us the opt out option, just that it did not.  Perhaps you could check with the update install developers and let us know what went wrong?

  • Updating ipod on fresh Windows install without losing data?

    Hey guys.
I have an 80gb iPod Classic, and my iTunes had about 72gb worth of data in the playlist. Recently I had to reformat my system drive and do a fresh Windows install, and as such my iTunes playlist obviously got wiped. If I readd everything that was on my iPod into the playlist, will iTunes try to wipe my iPod and transfer everything over again, or will it recognize that the files are exactly the same and only copy the new files over that weren't originally on it?

If your iPod is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Once the iPod is in manual mode you can add to it without losing any content but you will have to drag it from the library yourself: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
However once you are safely connected you can copy content from the iPod to iTunes. There are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:
Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

TuneJack Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
SharePod Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)

iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content only from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.
I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

  • Unwanted add on in adobe download?

I recently installed flash player and reader programs and also got an unwanted add on (Savingsbull) and am having difficulty removing it completely. I removed the two programs yesterday and went to reinstall them (with better oversight of the process) and your system confused me. (I am slowed by a neurological disorder.) Needless to say, I am not well versed in computerspeak. Please advise.

Adobe ans "Savingsbull" are not related in any way, and not partnered in any way.
Whatever you downloaded, didn't come from here, and it was probably not Flash Player.
I recommend using TDSSKiller from Kaspersky to remove the offending "Savingsbull" if it remains on your system.
Download the Adobe Flash Player installer directly by clicking one of the following links.
Flash Player for ActiveX (Internet Explorer)
Flash Player Plug-in (All other browsers)
There's no "added software" with those downloads.

  • [Solved] pacman see's a tarball that I installed without pacman??

Okay, before the "you need to use pacman for that" comments begin, I've aparently been doing things the hard way.  I finally read up on the ABS.  Been putting it off because I thought it was only for making new packages to add to the database.  If it isn't in pacman, then I went straight to the AUR.  Couldn't find it there, I haven't installed it yet, until yesterday, when I took a tarball that I had for TeamViewer7, unpacked it, and ran it outside of pacman.
Well, I've got a better grasp on ABS now, so I've already taken the liberty of clubbing myself on the head.  But, funny thing.  I typed pacman -Qm and to my surprise, there sits TeamViewer7.  So.... pacman saw my install without running pacman??  I suppose it's possible that I tried to install through pacman with an AUR package but it was giving me problems so I scrapped it and installed my tar file.  Just curious why it's showing up on pacman.

Found it, thanks everyone.  I didn't think to use the query tool, still kind of new to pacman.  I dug through the man page real quick to find the info that I needed:

So,  I must've installed it when I installed arch, but for some reason it was not on my menus in XFCE.  Then yesterday I installed it again from my tarball and it showed up in the menus... soo, in a few days when I get home maybe I'll kill it and try again from the AUR so I can give the report back to the owners of that package build.  I'm new, lol.

What OS will your Garmin work with? Funny there was someone else that did that and upgraded to Yosemite and regretted it.
I'd say Lion if your Garmin is compatible.

  • How to do a clean install without loosing anything

    Hi all,
I (foolishly) installed Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard as an update to my existing 10.5.8 Leopard install last year. Ever since I've had a host of small but annoying problems, that no one else seems to be complaining about. (For example in the finder half the time when I right click on a file the pop-up menu disappears after half a second and I have to click and hold to keep it open so I can make a selection.)
I'm starting to wonder if some of the problems I'm having are caused by the upgrade install, instead of a fresh install.
So I'd like to do a clean install of the OS, but it's been so long since I've done that I've forgotten how that works. How can I do a clean install without loosing all my data? Do I have to pull all my data off the hard drive, wipe it clean and start from scratch like you do on a PC, or is there an easier way? (I hope there is an easier way.) If someone could point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it.

I'm starting to wonder if some of the problems I'm having are caused by the upgrade install, instead of a fresh install.
I did an upgrade install on my old MacBook Pro, and it worked just fine. The key is that the system has to be in good working order when the update is applied... if there are minor problems, those problems can be magnified by an upgrade.
Of course, this may not be your problem... have you checked all your software and hardware for compatibility with Snow Leopard? One site that you can use, though it's by no means comprehensive, is:
    http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/
So I'd like to do a clean install of the OS, but it's been so long since I've done that I've forgotten how that works. How can I do a clean install without loosing all my data?
Unfortunately, there's no easy way to do a true clean reinstall. In a nutshell, here's what you need to do:
    1) Back up all your data. Make sure you've got application serial numbers stored somewhere!
    2) Now back up all your data in another place. If you don't have two copies, you won't have any backups after the next step... the backup from step 1 becomes the original, and a poorly-timed drive failure would ruin you.
    3) Reboot from the Mac OS X install disk (SL disk in this case)
    4) Erase the hard drive with Disk Utility
    5) Install the system
    6) Update everything to the current version via Software Update
    7) Install any apps you need
    8) Update those apps if necessary
    9) Reconfigure anything that needs it (network settings, appearance preferences, etc)
    10) Copy +only documents+, no settings files, from your backup, preferably manually rather than with Migration Assistant (which can sometimes copy more than you might want it to).
That's about it! For assistance with any of those items, just say the word.

Do you have access to another Mac with a disk drive?  If so you can do it in one of two ways:
1 - on the Mac with the optical drive launch Disk Utility and make a disk image of the iLife 11 disk. Connect the two Macs together and transfer the disk image to your MacBook Air.  Mount the disk image and install from it.  I have my iLife disks saved that way for quick and easy reinstall when necessary.
2 - connect the two Mac together so you can access the MBA from the Mac with the disk drive. Insert the iLife disk, and install from the second Mac to the MBA.

Looking to run windows on my MBPro through Bootcamp or Parallels, but would like to use a downloaded Windows 7, is it possible to install without the Windows Disc?
Need to set up a workstation on my MBPro that will only run on Windows. Im willing to use Bootcamp or Parallels to see what works best. Need to get this set up this week to enable working from home on my MB - rural and hoping to buy Windows 7 online - am I able to get windows working through either bootcamp or Parallels without the actual Windows disc? Bootcamp set up guide calls for a disc.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
First, the answer to your question is yes, it IS possible to install Windows in Parallels without a disc, using an .iso image file.
Boot Camp since OS X 10.8 also installs Windows without a disc: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4889551?tstart=0
Parallels has complete documentation, series of forums, and a knowledgebase. You can also download the current release of Parallels 9 and try it for free for a few weeks before you decide to purchase it.
The Parallels Desktop for Mac product page: http://www.parallels.com/products/desktop/
The Desktop for Mac forums: http://forum.parallels.com/forumdisplay.php?58-Parallels-Desktop-for-Mac
    Documentation: http://www.parallels.com/support/desktop-virtualization/desktop/#c12970
The Knowledgebase for Desktop for Mac: http://kb.parallels.com
The primary difference between a Boot Camp installation and a Parallels installation is that in the Boot Camp installation, you're installing Windows into a separate partition on your internal mass storage device (hard drive or SSD) and then rebooting your Mac directly into Windows.
In Parallels, you're always running OS X on the Mac and Parallels is running a Windows virtual machine.
Not to get too technical here, but it is also possible for Parallels to run an installed Windows Boot Camp partition as a virtual machine. If you're evaluating system performance with a trial copy, that might be the way to go, because you only have to install Windows once on Boot Camp as a dual-boot system, then install Parallels Desktop and run the Boot Camp partition as the virtual machine.
There is a performance difference between the two, with the Boot Camp Windows installation being faster, but without the convenience of running both Mac and Windows applications simultaneously offered by Parallels. Sometimes that convenience outweighs a performance hit.
I can't give you more Mavericks and Parallels 9 specifics, because I'm currently running Windows 7 with Parallels 7 on OS X 10.8.5. Parallels 7 will not run on OS X 10.9 Mavericks.
I've been using Parallels (to run a few old rarely-used WIndows applications with features that would require a steep learning curve and major expense to purchase and learn a similar Mac app) occasionally since Parallels 3 and Windows XP. With each new release of OS X, each new release of Parallels, and each new Windows release, there are ALWAYS 'early adopter' bugs that get worked out over time.

  • How do I add a contact without syncing?

I have many more contacts on my Mac than I would like on my phone. I just got a new friend's phone number, and I would like to add the information without having to call or text the number first.

Since you can sync contacts by groups, my suggestion would be to create a group specifically for the iPhone, and move the appropriate contacts to that group.  Then you can set up syncing for that group only in iTunes.
When you add new contacts on the Mac, add them to the appropriate group to be synced or not.
