Unwanted Automatic Clipping Mask in Adjustment Layers, CS5 & 10.7.2

Having just upgraded to 10.7.2 and running CS5, I now find for the first time that in the (for instance, Curves) new adjustment layer dialogue box, the box for creating a clipping mask based on the previous layer is by default selected. Is there any way to disable this unwanted "feature" that seems to have arisen with 10.7.2 (that is can I permanantly have the above box unchecked)? Thanks for your help.

  • Turned off automatic layer masks with adjustment layers - want them back

I somehow turned off the option that creates a layer mask automatically when creating a new adjustment layer.  I need that feature back, but I cannot locate it anywhere in photoshop or on google.  Does anyone know how to reset that option?  I am using CS5.  Thanks!

Thanks. That is what I have been tying to find, but I am afraid I need a little more guidance.  I am in the layers panel and clicked on the arrow to the right and I have no options to select this.  Here is what I am looking at:
Then when I select panel options I get this - not what I am looking to fix:

  • Why use layer masks and adjustment layers?

I've been using PSE and CS successfully for years.
One thing I have never understood is: why use layer masks and adjustment layers, instead of simply creating a copy of the subject layer (the one I want to make changes to) and experimenting with that?  It's quick (Ctrl-J), I can do it as many times as I want, I'm not affecting my Background layer.  If I like the changes, I can keep them.  I can switch the copy on and off to compare with the Background layer.  I can do any type of blend or combination I desire.  I can insert Gradient layer(s), select any part of the copy and (Ctrl-J) create a new layer containing only the selected part.  I can adjust size, rotate, do anything.
It almost seems that "layer mask" and "adjustment layer" are mainly another layer of terminology; can anyone explain (preferably in 50 words or less) how they are intrinsically different from or superior to working with copies of the Background layer?  What can be done with them that can't be done simply using copies of the Background layer?

Here's a very basic example of the advantage of using a layer mask.
I have this picture of a sunflower and I want to convert the background to black & white, leaving just the flower in color.  I duplicated the Background layer, converted it to B&W and proceeded to use the Eraser to uncover the flower color. But I made a mistake and erased outside the flower.  There is no way to correct this other than deleting the layer and starting again.
Now let's use a layer mask on the B&W layer. Set the Foreground/Background colors to the defaults black/white. Using the Brush tool paint on the mask with black to reveal the color.  Here I painted too far, revealing a green leaf in the background.  No need to start over.  Simply switch to white and paint the excess to convert back to the B&W.
Tip: while painting you can type "X" to toggle between black and white.
You could also select the flower using the various selection tools and then fill the selection with black. If it turns out the selection was not 100% accurate you can then fine-tune the result by painting on the mask with black or white as necessary.

  • Clipping Mask over Multiple Layers

    Hi,
I have a multiple layer file and I want to apply a clipping mask over the entire design as my last step to block out all of the excess around the edges of the clipboard. Every time I try this the layers are merged into one but I want to maintain the layers.
Is it possible to have a mask and keep the layers?

Make a new layer and drag all the existing layers into in, making them sublayers. Draw your mask in this master layer, select it, and go to Make Clipping Mask in the Layers panelette.

  • Default mask in adjustment layers

I don't want Photoshop to automatically create a mask when I invoke an adjustment layer.
How do I disable this function?  It must be buried under some non-obvious menu.  I had managed to disable it in CS4, but can't remember how.
    Thanks!

  • Adobe Photoshop CC dual screen clipping mask bug?

Hi, it's a little hard to explain the situation, but I'll try my best.
So here's my scenerio, I have 2 monitors. I’m currently working on the file on monitor 2.  Having the layer panel on monitor 1, I'm tryiing to create a clipping mask by holding down the option button on monitor 1's layer panel.
It will jump to the file on monitor 1 and stays on that monitor unless I move the layer panel to monitor 2.  Every other function seems to work fine so far, but this one really bothers me a lot.
    Thanks for your help.

I have problems with the alt/option key as well. I have two monitors and also use the left one as my dominant scree. I'm running Photoshop CC on Mavericks OS. I think this only happens when I have more than one document open in Photoshop.
Whenever I try to alt+click to create clipping masks in the layers panel, or alt+drag to quickly duplicate layers/layer-effects/masks/etc, instead of executing the task, Photoshop jumps focus to another open document, pulling it up on the right (i.e., secondary) monitor. I have to click back to my original document and do manually do everything with right clicks and menus. A relatively small glitch but huge annoyance.

  • Illustrator Clipping Mask

When I use the clipping mask, I later cannot recognise that there is one, as there is no 2nd box that appears like it did in previous Illustrator programs.
Is there a way to make it visible?

CS 4? I can still see the clipping mask in the Layers Panel list and edit it as usual.
    >Is there a way to make it visible?
    Work in Outline mode.
Edit: You aren't thinking of "Transparency Masks" are you? You can view a transparency mask by option-clicking the mask icon in the Transparency Panel.

  • Alt key switching documents instead of Creating Clipping Mask - New Mac Pro 2014 - Please help

I just got a new Mac Pro, and when I use the alt/option key as a shortcut in the layers palette (to create clipping masks and duplicate layers) instead it switches to other documents that I have open.  It's only after this happened that I realized how often I use the option key in my work flow and it's frustrating.
    Please help,
    Thanks,
    Lonno

Just solved it.  It had to do with my secondary monitor, which is where my layers palette was.  I used this link:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5476222?tstart=0
and turned off all the mission control settings I don't use.  Apparently it was switching monitors whenever I used the alt key.

  • Unable to create a mask on Adjustment layer

    hi.
I want to apply motion tracking data to a mask, therefore i'm trying to utilize an adjustment layer to control the mask position. So i tracked motion on a video footage, applied tracking data to Adjustment layer, then marked the Adjustment layer and drew a closed mask on it. However, when i finish the mask, it does not "cut the hole" on the video footage (which is right below the Adjustment layer). Tried all the available modes (Add, Subtract, Intersect, etc.) but only the outlines of the mask's shape are visible on the video footage.
How can i apply a mask to an adjustment layer? Or maybe there are other methods to apply motion tracking data to a mask?
    thank you

I think that you're misunderstanding how masks on adjustment layers are supposed to work. If you draw a mask on an adjustment layer, you are restricting the area within which the effects on the adjustment layer apply; it does not, as you say "cut a hole in the video footage". If you want to "cut a hole in the video footage", then you make the mask on the footage layer, not the adjustment layer.

  • Why won't this create a clipping mask?

Trying to take an AI file that I purchased and mask it into a shape. Either it comes back that it cannot mask, or I get a white screen. If I then select the shape, I can see it selected but it has no fill. The AI file was a complex design, but I've tried using the Make Clipping Mask from the Layers panel as well as the Object panel. Neither works. What am I missing?
here is a link to the file...

The problems (there are several) reside with the bird drawing that you are trying to use as a masking object. Select the bird and Choose Object>Clipping mask>Release Clipping Mask. Delete the white box that shows up. Reselct the bird and Choose Object>Compound Path>Release Compound Path.Go back to Object>Compound Path and Make Compound path> Then select all and choose Object>Clipping Mask>Make Clipping mask.
    That should do it.

  • ArcGIS 10.0 to Illustrator (CS5).... Edit, Save, Reopen, Clipping masks are all gone....

I am working from ArcGIS 10.0 to Illustrator CS5.
I make my map in ArcGIS. The layers are in four groups (VECTORS: top, middle, bottom + RASTER). I export the map from layout view to an .ai file. I open the .ai file in illustrator. Edit a couple things. Save the document. Seems simple enough... when I open it it should look just like it did when I just saved it two seconds ago, right?
    Nope.
After saving, closing, and reopening all my clipping masks are gone. They have disappeared/ automatically released. I have tried this same process on my personal computer (this issue is happening on a work computer) and I am not having an issue (GIS layers are in groups, I export, open, edit, save, close, reopen... still all clipped and the way I want it). I'm not sure if it is the settings on the work computer that are causing the clipping masks to automatically release on their own or what. When I look through the layers in my .ai file (post save, reopened file) the former clipping masks are now just 'paths.' but if I reclip them they mess up my layers and it seems like a tedious and unnecessary process (especially if the whole thing is working out correctly on my personal computer).
Does anyone have any idea why illustrator is automatically releasing my clipping masks upon saving?
Is it a GIS issue? Or an Illustrator issue? Are my settings wrong? Help!

The first thing you must do when opening an Arc AI file is to do a Save As and overwrite the original file with a new copy of the file in whatever the version of AI you have. If you just do a Save of the Arc file, it will revert to an AI3 file. Everything will be placed on a single layer.

  • Plea from technical artist: CS5 clipping mask content selection as a preference...

I just have to weigh in on this.
I've been trying to adjust to CS5, from CS3, since November. It's now March.
My job involves taking apart and editing complex art created by other people... who have all different ways of working.  The inability to see what a clipping mask contains when I click on it, AND the inability to edit the contents unless I first locate the perimeter of the mask and/or switch tools, has me working "blind". It's become a real battle to figure out how the previous artist set things up.
I've found workaround methods, but they're just that. I seem to be doing a lot more clicking, double clicking and tool switching, all of which are that much harder on hands that do this for 10 hours a day.
I need to be able to click on an element and know if it is part of a mask, what other additional elements that mask contains, whether the perimeter of the mask is aligned correctly, etc.
PLEASE make it a preference setting to handle masks and mask content selection the old way.  When I'm building new art, I'll be happy to work the CS5 way.  When I'm trying to figure out what someone else has done... please don't make me work harder than I already do...
    Thanks.

    Larry (et al),
[Please be assured...I've invested HOURS trying to get this clipping mask to work before requesting help on this forum.]
The exact same image as per my prior post appears when the file is saved:
Illustrator --> Save As --> PDF
Illustrator --> Export --> JPEG (with and without Artboards)
Illustrator --> Export --> PNG(with and without Artboards)EXCEPT: One PNG trial with "Transparency" selected (turned ON) did not have a white background but did have the unwanted 90-degree corners.
Illustrator --> Save for Web --> PNG
Illustrator --> Save for Web --> JPEG
And a few other trials whose details I omitted to record.
After ~dozen trials...with many permutations & combinations of Adobe Illustrator's parameters...all I can generate is the image in my prior post--with the unwanted 90-degree corners.
Let me fully acknowledge, no doubt I'm doing something wrong...yet I just can't figure out what.
@Larry: Would you please clarify the reference to the Avery labels? Regrets, I looked at the site you provided...yet don't understand how it relates to clipping masks.
    Here's hoping someone can throw a life-line.
    Many thanks to everyone,
    Plane Wryter

  • How to use a clipping mask layer to a multiple base layers?

Is it possible to use one layer as a clipping mask to a 5 different bottom layers.
What I'm trying to do is apply an adjustment layer to certain layers only. Is that possible?

not that I would know, but what you can do instead is group those 5 layers (CTRL+G), add the adjustment layer as the topmost layer in the group and set the group's blending mode to "normal". The adustment layer is then only applied to the layers within the same group.

  • Adjustment layers not opening mask anymore

On my laptop I choose an adjustment option and it creates a new layer and layer mask.  On the imac it only creates the layer with the adjustment.   I have to manually add the mask.
I can't find a preference or setting or anything to get the two to behave the same way.
    Regards,
    Kelly

Inconsistent from Photoshop UI as well as from Actions.  And becase I know what will cause them to fail. I can create actions and scripts that I know will work no matter how they are set. The step will work the same way no matter which way the options are set.
For example disable add layer mask you wrote you have no problem doing that.  Do a Ctrl+A (select all) then add an levels adjustment layer to the current layer. You will find that the levels adjustment layer is added with a layer mask.  Photoshop will work that way in actions and from its UI.   So I can record and add adjustment layer and know for sure  a layer mask will be added no matter how a user set the fly-out option.     I can also use Photoshop menu Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Type.  And in its dialog I can Check  use previous layer to create clipping mask.  The Adjustment layer will be clipped no matter which way the fly-out option is set.
These options breakes  Photoshop original design they are bad options and their implementation is poor. Actions and scripts can not set these options. Scripts can not find out how they are set either. You write Plug-ins do you add adjustment layers in any of them?
Without using these bugs automating adjustment layers is hit and miss. You would not know the state of the adjustment layer you would not know if you had to add a layer mask or modify or replace the existing mask.  You would not know if the adjustment layer applied to all lower layer or just the previous layer.
Its a good thing you don't use such action for they could  have problems....
