Unwanted automatic cropping when viewing in Photos

In IOS 7, the Photos app crops my images when viewed on my Ipad 2. It takes a sliver off the top and bottom. When displayed on AppleTV exclusively, I see the whole image. In IOS 6, too, I see the whole image, on either screen. How can I get IOS 7 to display the whole image? (These are .jpg's, interestingly enough, the thumbnails in Photos that I see are uncropped).

It seems to happen when the aspect ratio is close to the aspect ratio of the screen only. VERY annoying!

  • HT201406 I purchased a new iPad 3. When viewing Facebook photos a white ring in the center of the photo appears randomly. I can move photo around with finger and one ring stays in center of screen even on blank part of screen. Help.

Has anyone experienced a white ring ( like a Cheerios or life saver candy shape)  frozen in center of screen when viewing Facebook photos? You ca move the picture around with your finger, even minimize it and the ring is in the center of the screen. It is random not on all photos as you swipe through them. Could be on any profile photos. When you click done and go back into photos it disappears on the photo or photos that had it previous , but may sow up again on other photos . Again it's a perfect shaped white ring in center of screen. Only on Facebook.

Not familiar with that but it is worth trying a Reset [Hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons down together for 10 seconds or so (until the Apple logo appears) and then release. The screen will go blank and then power ON again in the normal way.] It is app and data safe!

  • How to prevent iPhoto to make an automatic event when importing from Photo stream

    Hi everyone,
My question is related to the Photo stream functionality in iPhoto.
Is possible to prevent iPhoto from making an automatic event when I import a photo from Photo stream. It is really annoying because of the fact that I use "events" for keeping my important photo's together (as many of you do I asume). Ofcourse after importing I can just delete it from my event section but is there a way to prevent it?
    Thanks.

No. Photostream creates an Event for each month.
iPhoto has many other tools for managing and categorising your Photos.
I use Events simply as big buckets of Photos: Spring 08, July - Nov 06 are typical Events in my Library. I use keywords and Smart Albums extensively. I title the pics broadly.
    I keyword on a
    Who
    What
Where basis (The When is in the photos's Exif metadata). I also rate the pics on a 1 - 5 star basis.
Using this system I can find pretty much find any pic in my 40k library in a couple of seconds.
So, for example, I have a batch of pics titled 'Seattle 08' and a  typical keywording might include: John, Anne, Landscape, mountain, trees, snow. With a rating included it's so very easy to find the best pics we took at Mount Rainier.
    File -> New Smart Album
    set it to 'All"
    title contains Seattle
    keyword is mountain
    keyword is snow
    rating is 5 stars
Or, want a chronological album of John from birth to today?
    New Smart Album
    Keyword is John
Set the View options to Sort By Date Ascending
    Want only the best pics?
add Rating is greater than 4 stars
The best thing about this system is that it's dynamic. If I add 50 more pics of John  to the Library tomorrow, as I keyword and rate them they are added to the Smart Album.
In the end, organisation is about finding the pics. The point is to make locating that pic or batch of pics findable fast. This system works for me.

  • 4:3 footage being automatically cropped when played on 4:3 TV's.  Converting to 16:9 no help either.

Hi! I recorded some footage on my DV Camera in 4.3 aspect ratio.  I uploaded into a Premiere Pro CS4 project set up for 4.3, not 16.9.  Everything that's in the frame on the camera's display is there on the screen in Premiere.  The problem arises when I come to encode.  In Export Settings, you can chose to crop the image to 4:3 or 16:9. Either doesn't include the whole picture.  If you choose to no cropping you can set the boundaries around the image yourself, cutting out surrounding black, so that just the image is framed. This is what I did.  You then chose to export either in 4:3 or 16:9.  Choosing 4:3 and encoding in Adobe Encoder, I then set up a project in Encore, to burn to DVD in 4:3.  Playing the DVD on a 16:9 TV or Computer gives you all the image, but playing on a 4:3 TV crops off the sides and tops.  This I could understand if I was trying to play a 16:9 image on a 4:3 screen, but not 4:3 on a 4:3 screen.
Just for experimentation I went back, and pasted the 4:3 footage into a Premiere project set up as 16:9.  I then exported as 16:9, and burnt to DVD as 16:9.  Plays fine on a 16:9 screen.  But on a 4:3 screen, while the whole image is present with nothing cut off, it's streched, so my subject's head and body are the wrong proportions.                                                       The only way that works is to paste the footage into a 16:9 project and apply black borders in Export Settings.  This does at least present all the image in proportion on a 4:3 screen, but the problem is its plays as a small screen in the middle of the TV surrounded by loads of black border.     I've tried the DVD on a couple of 4:3 TV's and had the same effect on each.
I'd be grateful if anyone knows what I can do to get all the image to play on a 4:3 screen, without it being streched, small, or cropped.
    Thanks!
    John
N.B.  I tried using the 4:3 and 16:9 cropping templates in Export Settings and as I saw there, they cut off bits of the image.
Just for completeness; thinking if it's my Matrox RT X2 interfering, I pasted the footage into a non-Matrox Premiere project and burnt in a non-Matrox Encore project. It made no difference.

I agree with Harm on both points. You should turn off cropping completely if you're going from a DV source (which you are) to an MPEG-2 DVD output (which you are). Just click the Crop button "off" on the Source tab.
If you're seeing weird distortions on some television/DVD players, you may have the aspect ratio settings set improperly in the DVD players themselves. Typically, these settings need to be changed when you're viewing anamorphic (16:9 widescreen) DVDs; you change the setting to match your display preference to your television. Sometimes, the settings are not correct, and will result in unwanted stretching. This isn't necessarily the problem you're up against, but it might be something to check if things don't look right. Other than that, everything looks more or less correct in the export settings.

  • Image Still Cropped When Viewed Full Screen

Hi everyone.  I am trying to figue out if there is any way in iBooks Author to have an image cropped(masked) in layout view, but then enable it to show the full unmasked and uncropeed image when tapped to be viewed full screen on the iPad.
I have a client that wants some image to only take up half a page vertically and have a widescreen type crop with text on the lower half of the page, but would like to see the full image when tapped on instead of the widescreen crop.  Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
    Griffin

Are you meaning to put a 100 pt+ line border on the image
    Yes. Like this:
    (1)
    (2) Then do this:
    (3)
Which should then result in that image being zoomed too large and just enough so that the original black border is clipped and you are able to see the image in all it's fullness.

  • Text below photo album too far down when viewing individual photos

In iweb, I've made pages of photos. I have text below the photo album. On this page: http://axleart.com/index/Thelma_Mathias.html#1 the text pops up right below the photo when I shift from thumbnail to individual photos. I like this. On other pages, such as: http://axleart.com/index/Matthew_Chase-Daniel.html the text remains way down at the bottom of a long blank page. I want to make it pop up like on the other. How to do this? I notice that on the good page, the text box is below a little line at the bottom of the album (so would be the "made on a mac" button. On the bad page, the text box is above this line. I suspect this might be the key, but I can't get it below. Any ideas?

"To purchase, click here" text box of the problem page is in the page body_layer, you need to move it into footer_layer below the little line at the bottom of the album.
to do that select the text box, drag it down while hold down *command key* ; footer_layer will lite up when the text box is inside footer_layer .

  • Up Next automatically changes when viewing by Songs

If you view by Song your Up Next will get completely screwed up.
Enable Column Browser then, Select Music, Songs, then choose an album and start playing a song in that ablum.  The Next up will correctly list all the songs to play.  However if you then start browsing other albums, songs or anything the Next Up will change automatically listing all the songes from the album you just clicked on forgetting what it was currently playing.
Worse is if you elect to play an album this way and go to manage a device the Up Next will change to include all songs.  This doesn't seem to do this using Albums, Artist or Genres views.
    This was broken in 11.0.2.25

Hmm, did it behave any differently in the previous two builds? As far as I can tell what you are describing is typical of the way iTunes has behaved in the past in the "list" style views. Once a track has started playing whatever you do to filter or sort the display will, as long as the original track is still displayed, cause the track shown next to it to be played next.
If you select all of the tracks of the album, rather than just the first one, and then right-click and select Play Next then just those tracks will be added to the Up Next list and the list won't change as you change what is viewed.

can anyone tell me how to print the whole picture in iphoto without cropping. For example printing a sqaure picture on 6x4 media, iphoto crops the picture to fit the paper. I would like the whole photo even with blank areas.
    Thanks

select the photo and click print, select the printer, print size (use a custom size of 4x4 if you want a 4x4 photo), paper size etc and print
Or select the photo etc and click customize and right click (control click) on the photo in the preview window and select fit to frame

  • How to stop iphoto from automatically starting when it detects photos?

I keep photos on my flash drive but don't want iphoto to start up and want to import them everytime I plug in the flash drive. I can't find the setting anywhere...did I just miss it?

It would be best to ask in the iPhoto 6 forum - http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1116 - it is very confusing to have questions (and answers) about different versions in the iPhoto '08 forum

  • Photo quality worse when viewed on a PC -- why?

I'm experiencing a strange issue with some photos that I've touched up in iPhoto. When viewing the photos in iPhoto, they look fine. When exported into a different folder and viewed in Preview, they look fine. But later on I tried opening up the same exported files (jpeg's) on a PC, and some of them looked horrible. Some were horrendously noisy. Some had colors that seemed off. Some were far too sharp (I was playing around with the sharpness adjuster in iPhoto).
Has anyone experienced this issue before, and does anyone know why this happened? I plan on simply going back and toning down some of my edits/adjustments, but I'd like to know if there's an explanation for this.
One odd thing I noticed just now is that when opening some of these "bad" jpegs in Preview, for a split second, the photos look like they did on my PC. For example, I could see the pixel noise in one of them for a split second... similar to the way iPhoto first displays a blurry enlargement when double clicking on a photo. It almost seems like Preview and iPhoto are self-correcting bad images for display. Thoughts?

The primary cause of the misalignment is the fact the text is using a "Web Safe" font. A "web safe" font is not a single font. Rather it's a list/stack of fonts for the site visitor's browser to try until it finds one that's available the visitor's computer. That means on one computer the text is in one font (i.e. Arial) and on another computer it's another (i.e. Helvetica) with the subsequent fallout caused by the varying character widths between the two fonts. The best way to reduce this variation between site viewers is to use a Web Font (either an Edge Web Font or a Self-Hosted Web Font).
The alignment still won't be entirely consistent across browsers (or even versions of browsers), because each browser has it's own text layout engine and the engines do sometime change, but the variation will be radically reduced.

  • Partial cropping left and right when viewing on TV ?

hi, i've just finished a project which was anamorphic. it looks great on CPUs, which was it's intent, but it is slightly cropped when viewed on a TV with a DVD player here in the US. here are the details: i produced 2 final "prints". the first was a 4x3 sequence with a nested anamorphic sequence embedded within it. this was rendered using compressor > ntsc > 4x3. the second "print" was anamorphic and rendered using compressor but this time it was ntsc > 16x9 etc. etc. both versions were then burned to DVD using Studio Pro 4. both versions look great when viewed on computer which was the goal all along. My question is: what am i missing so that they can also be viewed on both computers and TVs without any cropping? the amount of cropping is just a little on left and right so i'm not sure if it's simply a video safe question. it seems to be more than just an overlookable amount though. thanks !

thanks a lot for the help! ... looks like i'll need to author 2 versions ... one more for viewing on TV in addition to the one i made for viewing from a computer ... thanks again for the feedback!

  • 5th gen reboots when viewing photos

Brand new iPod video running software version 1.2.1 will reboot if I press the center button when viewing a photo.
    Is this a known bug?

Also reboots when pushing the ">" play button when viewing the photos page or on the "Photo Library" menu.

  • Color is Wrong in Preview / Quick Look when viewing photographs

    Hi All,
I have a problem in that all my photos and image files look a lot more saturated in Leopard Preview / Quick Look, with much warmer hue, tint and color temp, then they do in either iPhoto, Aperture, Photoshop Elements, Safari (or Firefox) when uploaded to the Web and even in my Windows XP VM using the normal Explorer application. The difference is very visibly and is unacceptable when viewing / editing photos.
To summarize, it seems the only place images look different, much more saturated with more warmer tint and hue, is in OS X Leopard Preview and Quick Look.
    - I have tried viewing and comparing on another Macbook Laptop and do not notice this problem, which leads me to believe that there is a problem with my system.
    - I have also tried creating another user account on my Mac and logging in to preview the images, but it makes no difference.
Can someone please advise as to what I can do to fix the problem?
    Thanks,
    P

I have noticed the same. Seems like a genuine bug in preview.
Try this for laughs: Open up a picture in Preview and note its too warm colors. Make a screenshot, and view in preview next to the original image. The now magically warmer colors prove this is indeed a bug in preview.
Lightroom, PS, Safari, Opera all show the images in question (JPG, embedded profile: sRGB IEC61966-2.1) consistently correctly, with preview being the only exception a lazy comparison could find.
EDIT: This happens only on my external TFT. If I move both the Photoshop and the preview windows to the built-in screen, the Photoshop colors "snap" to look the same on both screens (and the same as preview on the built-in TFT).
There seems to be a problem with preview always applying (correct) color correction for the built-in TFT regardless of whether the image is actually displayed there or on another display. This is probably also only noticeable if built-in TFT and external display have noticeably different color responses (and thus corrections), and only when their colors are corrected.
This really is an annoying bug for photographers or other creative people (which Apple prides itself to cater to).

  • When editing a photo in iphoto09 can you save original ?

when editing a photo in iphoto09 how can you save original too?

iPhoto always saves the original. You decisions are recorded in a database and applied live to the image when yuo view it. Your master file is intouched.
Want to see it? Hold the shift key when viewing a photo.
Note the Photos -> Revert to original command.
Want to access it? File -> Export and set the Kind to Original
