Unwanted Bevel Effect?

When adding a grain pattern effect to an object in Illustrator CS6 I get an odd bevel that surrounds the object. There is nothing in the Appearance window to suggest that there should be a bevel and I didn't add it myself.
Is there some setting I am missing or an easy way to remove the effect? For now I am masking the object with a slightly smaller object but it's starting to drastically increase the size of my file.

Nope, I'm still getting the bevel effect in there somehow.
It just seems odd that Illiustrator would add that in for apparently no reason.
And here's a shot of the Effect window:
Also, it only seems to happen to the Horizontal and Vertical Grain effects.

  • Can Adobe Illustrator match inner bevel effects of inDesign and Photoshop?

Can Adobe Illustrator match or simulate inner bevel effects of inDesign and Photoshop? If it is possible, please explain how to get a soft inner bevel on type or vector shape in Adobe Illustrator CS4 that can be set up to be identical (or, at least, very close) to the layer styles of PS and the type/fill/stroke/object effects of ID. So far, I have not been able to achieve the same look with 3D extrude and bevel in AI. I want a solid red object with a soft 16 point white-tint highlight and a soft 16 point black tint shadow. If it is not something that is possible with 3D extrude and bevel settings, this something that must or could be done manually with the gradient mesh tool?

I’ve vectorized everything except the 3D red portion.

  • Unwanted shadow effect?

    Hello Acrobat Forum:
I've had an annoying problem with PDF created from InDesign CC for months now, and I can't figure out what's wrong because it seems intermittent, and I can't narrow the variables to figure out when it's happening or why.
Sometimes, a PDF I create from InDesign has an unwanted shadow effect under much of the text, and the colors come out dull and darker. Here is a screenshot of the same PDF file exhibiting the problem and one that does not exhibit it.
Oftentimes, I will export a PDF and it's fine, but then I'll edit something and re-export it, and from that point on, any number of exports to PDF will result in a drop-shadowed file. The drop shadow effect is present at all view magnifications except extremely zoomed in (~1600%)....then it goes away, but the colors are still too dark.
When I export PDF, I am using the same preset I've created each time (including the same ICC profiles), but the results can vary for some reason....
    NO PROBLEM:
    PROBLEM:
I did manage to find a small discussion about a similar problem, and the suggested solution was to use "Gracol" as the ICC profile the PDF is forced to use during export. That is not a good solution since many times, people I send files to for review will preview PDF attachments in web-based email browsers whose PDF plugins don't support anything but sRGB....
Any ideas what is causing this problem? Or, when it occurs and when it won't? Or, what solutions there might be?
    Thanks for reading!

  • Bevel effect bug.

To some you, this is going to look like a trivial matter. For those of us designing detailed multi-buttoned GUI's, it isn't. Yes, there are time consuming work-arounds. But why?...when it could be fixed by Adobe?
This first pic shows the starting point. It is a two layer image, the blue rectangles being uppermost.
This second pic shows the default settings used to add an emboss effect to the rectangles and the result.
It takes a sharp eye to see what's wrong. This third pic zooms in to show the problem.
If you apply a outer or embossed bevel effect to a number of objects on a single layer, the topmost and leftmost edges will be missing a pixels worth of feathering. This error popped up in PS CS2. It almost seems like there is this mystery 1 pixel offset error worming it way around various parts of the program. I'd really LOVE to hear Chris Cox's take on this one, too.

    it's not a bug
    I would beg to differ.

  • Unwanted special effects in iMovie 6

Macbook pro OSX 10.6.8  iMovie 6
I know i should upgrade but the newer iMovies are not intuitive and v6 does everything i need it to.
Some unwanted special effects are suddenly appearing in my iMovie 6, flying saucers, fireworks, balloons floating thru, flipping, waving screens.  I think it must be coming from some shareware installation i looked at for some special purpose, maybe masking or subtitles, but i cannot find any on my computer, (except MeditEdit).
Importing directly from my camera, which i frequently do, is totally messed up.
I have thrown away all the preferences i can find but they keep coming back everytime i open the application iMovie.
    Where are they?
    What software installed this?
How do i shut it off or kill it?
    Help.

    Hi
    First
    • trash iMovie pref files - in User library/preferences - You've said You've done that
    • repair permissions - Disk Util tool
Then You can now look into User library/iMovie and here Plug-ins
    • I moved all of them out onto DeskTop/Finder - when iMovie IS NOT running.
    • Now test iMovie
Alt: Start a new User Account
    • Log into this
    • Re-try iMovie
Does it run OK now ?

  • Bevel effect with artifact

I have created a nice typographic logo encapsulated in two underlaying outline shapes, one of them has a bevel effect applied to it. It looks terribly nice, except for one spot on the entire length of the path. The path has no compound in it, and there only good curved anchor point around that area. So I do not understand why Illustrator creates a bugger right there.
Created from ground up in Illustrator CS4, no autotrace used.
Can anyone point me in the direction of a solution to this issue?
    Thanks for any feed back

Hi John and DrStrik9 – thanks for your suggestions
Examining the path does not reveal any oddities – none that catches my eye at least. I have tried expanding the effect, and it clearly shows that AI has chosen to make some sort of transition on that precise spot.
The peculiar thing is, that when I rotate the whole thing (non expanded effect), the artifact moves along the path, still keeping its position in the upper right corner. This implies to me, that this issue has nothing to do with a defective path.
I have attached a screen shot og the expanded effect.
    What do you think?

  • Bevel effect moves Featured News buttons down and right after update

After I applied the update today, all of the Featured News buttons with the Bevel Effect have been moved down and right about 1/4" and I cannot seem to fix.  I used the Bevel feature for all buttons in the Rollover, Mouse Down, and Active states.  Before I applied the update, the bevel feature worked great, but now, as you can see from the image, the buttons have now moved down and to the right.  I've even tried deleting the entire widget and starting over, but no fix.
The attached image shows the Featured News buttons.  The top button is in ACTIVE state with the Bevel effect activated.  The "Step 3" button shows the Rollover state with the Bevel effect activated.  All other buttons show the NORMAL state - NO BEVEL.  Before the update was applied, the buttons would appear in the same location as the NORMAL state, but now the buttons appear lower and to the right as you can see.

I'm having similar problems - and now I cannot remove the bevel from my buttons and they are shifting all over the place!

  • Converting a word document to pdf loses bevel effect

Does anyone know why when converting a word document to pdf the bevel effect is completely lost?

Following up with AA XI and WORD 2010 on Win7. It worked find. Apparently WORD 2007 did not see the bevels and the do appear in WORD 2010. I also got the bevels using the Std job settings with both the Print and the PDF Maker. I am using 11.0.07, so if you are using an earlier version, you might consider updating to the most current version. Then again, you may not be using XI. I did note that the Print version used my default page size of letter rather than the A4 that PDF Maker picked up from the original document. That is easy to correct by paper selection in the printer properties. However, in both versions I saw issues that appear to be due to the printer metrics changes based on the Adobe PDF printer not being selected as the printer during editing. Two factors show up and make editing a bit harder -- no hard page breaks (ctrl-Enter) and the use of floating figures. The latter is something I have lots of problems with, but you may be good with them. However, when the document reflows that can still be a problem. I did see some reflow problems in both files, so it is something you need to go back and review.
    The bevels:
The Reflow Problem (from PDF Maker on A4 paper):
Maybe that helps some. So info on your versions of WORD, Acrobat, and OS would help isolate issues. As I mentioned, this Acrobat is 11.0.07. Don't know why WORD 2007 did not see your bevels.

  • Can I swap the power supply on my iMac G5 without any unwanted side effects?

    Hi All,
I'm new and have searched related posts, but have not found an answer to this exact question.
I have a first generation US version iMac G5. The label says that the power supply is 100-120V. Can I swap the power supply using an internationally rated power supply (100-240V) from a later version iMac G5 without any unwanted side effects? Such as the iMac G5 ALS power supply?
I live China and would prefer not to rely on an external power suppressor or convertor. I would prefer to plug and go.
    Thanks,

  • Bevel effect stopping publishing correctly in Muse

Please help, I have tried dozens of fixes for days that I will list below.
The effect previously worked, but when I made recent changes to other items on the website, the effect no longer publishes correctly. It is for 3 rectangles in the heading and footer on the Master page. It works correctly on just one page, the "about" page, but not on all on the other pages, even though they all share the same master page.
It works correctly when I "Preview Page In Browser" and preview each page one at a time, it works on all pages.
When I "Preview Site In Browser" it only works on one page, the "about" page.
When I save to HTML it only works on the one page, the "about" page. Same when I publish online.
I have the most recent Muse updates, and the most recent OS X Yosemite updates, on a MacBook Pro Retina 2012. The site is www.vanriley.com, and the page that the master header and footer work correctly on is the "about" page.
Among the fixes I have tried:
rebuild the objects as new and republish; publish with the effect off and then on again; using Firefox instead of Safari; clearing all history and cookies rebuild and republish; download Java 8, stop the Creative Cloud on the monitor then re-sign in; create a new Sub-master-page without the objects and then assign the Sub page to all pages and publish then re-assign all pages back to the Master page and republish; re-start all programs and computer; I have confirmed on the master page that the heading items are all on same layer and the footer items are marked as footers (the objects appear on each page, just not the effect, the effect only appears on the one page).
    Thank You

Please provide the site link along with screenshots of design view and Muse preview where bevel effect is not rendering in live site.
    Thanks,
    Sanjit

  • Maintaining extrude and bevel effect

I am currently designing a logo with the extrude and bevel effect. It is fine at full size, but when I copy and paste it and scale it down for another file--a.e. a business card--the effect is lost.
Why is this happening? Do you have to apply the effect seperately when the object is rescaled?

This is another option of scaling effects but it slows down the computer when it comes to more than one applied effects. That's why I told him to expand the effect.  Of course when expanding he can't edit effect's properties.

  • 3d/Bevel effect in Scheduling gantt task bars

    Hi,
We are using Jdeveloper 11.1.2.0.0 and WLS 10.3.5
We need to improve on the look and feel of our scheduling gantt application in adf.
Right now the taskbars do not have a 3d/bevel effect to them.
Could anyone suggest any docs/Links for this requirement.
    Regards,
    Nikhil

    Hi,
[This question was already answered on the internal forum, reposting the answer here for other customers]
The following link shows a Project Gantt with icons (as well as labels). You can select one of inner icon alignments (innerLeft, innerCenter, or innerRight) to place the icon inside the task bar. The Scheduling Gantt works exactly the same way, so you can look at this Project Gantt sample as an example.
    http://jdevadf.oracle.com/adf-richclient-demo/faces/feature/gantt/projectGanttLabelIconPlacement.jspx
If you always want the icon to be placed innerLeft, for example, you can set the attribute to "innerLeft" instead of pointing it to a backing bean method:
    iconPlacement="innerLeft"

  • Merging Layers Discards Bevel Effect

Been dealing with this for a while, and it appears others have also, according to research. Layers with a layer style applied, mostly of the bevel or emboss variety, lose the effect when the layers are merged or the image flattened. Doesn't seem to happen with any other styles, like drop shadows or glows: those will stay, but the bevel will not. These are all Normal layers, nothing tricky going on. It's a program fault and I need to know if there's a workaround. I'm having to resort to saving the whole unflattened image as a jpeg so the client can proof the work, but sooner or later I'm going to need to flatten the image.
Using Mac PS CS5 Extended, abundance of RAM & Disk space.
    Thanks for any help.
    Cayce

It does happen with other effects too.
As far as making it more perfect, there is a configuration change you can make that will make Photoshop calculate everything at 100% size under the covers, then downsize for display, but it comes with some possible nasty side effects.  For one, since it's doing everything at full size it may slow WAYYY down, and for another not all GPUs can handle it.  But if you want to try, the configuration change is this:  In the Performance Prefs, change Cache Levels to 1, then close and restart Photoshop.
Please be aware that this may destabilize your system, and if you find yourself thinking "wow, this is sluggish!" you'll know why.
I actually use this setting for my 32 bit Photoshop only (I'm on Windows), because it also causes layer compositing to be done in full 16 bit precision (which I find useful for astroimage processing).  The nice thing is that the two versions (32 and 64 bit) keep their configurations separately, so all I need to do to get high quality compositing is just run the 32 bit version.
More than you wanted to know, probably.

  • Unwanted swatch effect

Sometimes, when I attempt to change the color of a text by clicking on a color in the Swatches list, rather than change the color in the text, it keeps the original text color and adds the newly selected color in the area immediately around the text (in the shape of each of the text characters so that each character is thicker than the original). When this happens, how can I re-set the settings of the Swatch list to return it to its regular functions so I don't get the unwanted effect? Thanks.

Okay, I was able switch what the swatch panel was doing by hitting the x key (I had thought perhaps you meant a "key" icon on the screen), which is good, thanks. The only other thing is whether or not it is possible to change the text that had been changed previously to the undesired font appearance back to the regular appearance. Even after I switch the way the swatch panel works (via your directions), the already-changed text won't change back. Any thoughts?

  • 3D Box (bevel) effect in InDesign CS4

I am trying to make a 3D effect drop shadow look for the images at the request of a client. Attached PDF is a sample. I do not want to do this for each image that I have on file for a job. Is there a script, plug-in or object style that I can use to set this up faster?
    Thank you for your help.

For those interested, answered in the general forum: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/464086?tstart=0
The first script modifies the actual path of the frame holding the image, which is my preferred way, as it keeps the image + fill as a single object. But it doesn't work with cropped images, so I wrote another one that duplicates, modifies, then groups the image.
As a side note for scripters that want to experiment: the check for a "Rectangle" is essential since it expects exactly 4 path points, and this is entirely different for other polygons such as ellipses, stars, triangles, and text converted to outlines. You're on your own if you'd like to run the script on one of these.
