Unwanted black or white background when replacing icons

I like to replace the icons of my hard drives according to the purpose for which they are used. (At http://www.iconarchive.com many icons are available.) This works fine when I'm running OS 10.5. I find an icon I want to use, copy the image, use the finder to Get Info of the drive whose icon I want to replace, and then paste into the icon in the Get Info window. However, when I do that in OS 10.4, everything works except that the icon appears with either a black or white background.
How can I replace my icons in OS 10.4 and not have a black or white background?
Thanks,
John Link

Great workaround...
Yup! It's a few extra steps, not too many and nothing tricky, and the result is perfect.
none of those icons work here at all for me!?
In what operating system(s) do they not work for you? And what do you mean by "do not work"?

  • Why does my photoshop keep giving black and white lines when I use my lasso tool?

why does my photoshop keep giving black and white lines when I use my lasso tool? It has never done this before last night. It filles the Whole lasso seleted box with (what it almost looks like) black and white caution lines. then when I go to zoom out, my zoom option starts to mess up where you cant click and move your mouse to zoom in/out with ease but where you have to click to zoom out (many times).
    Can ANYONE help me?

I am using CS5, WIndows 7, I am not sure how to tell if my drivers are up to, and I am more than happy to screen shot it.

  • White text on a white background when adding glossary definitions

I inherited an existing IBA file so I'm not sure how the styles were defined (and I've never really played around with custom styles or layouts) but I was hoping it wouldn't matter.  The main color scheme is a dark background and light (white) text.  Similar to the built in template 'contemporary'.
When I add a glossary term, i have my definitions in a separate (word) document.  I copy/paste from the document into the glossary term area.  When I paste, it's pasting white text.  Background color of the glossary definition window is also white (not sure I can control that).  My definition document is black text.
When I test the book, the little glossary dialog pops up when I touch/click on a word but again, it's white text on a white background.
Can I change the background color of the glossary dialog?
Is there a way to change all my glossary definitions from white text to black text?
When I create a test book using 'contemporary', which is also white text on a dark background, it does not have this problem.

As I mentioned, when I used a built in template, like contemporary, it worked too.  The problem only happened with the IBA that I was given.  Perhaps the previous owner of the file had accidentally chosen Format/Advanced/Define Default Glossary Style when they had some white on white displayed and caused all the formatting for the glossary to be the same.  I was able to fix it using that menu path.
I'm not sure what fixing it in the "source file" means.  I was trying to fix it in the IBA file.  Not sure where else I would have fixed it.

  • Remove white background when using Frames

I am trying to use a simple black frame around an image.  Unfortunately a white frame is created also, from the "background."  How do I remove this large white surrounding frame? Is there a way to create a framed image with no background?  Why is a background considered to be necessary behind a framed image? If I try to copy only the image and its frame, so that I can paste only them into a new document, "copy" is greyed out in the menu.  Why can one not copy an image that has a Photoshop frame on it? I can copy and past images with no frames.
    Thanks

How are you applying the frame to your image?
Simply open your image through File->Open.
When your image has been opened, go to content pane and double click the frame that you want to apply.
The frame would be applied and there wont be any white background.
You can also adjust the image inside the frame. Just double click the image inside the frame and you you would get the option to drag the image to adjust or to zoom in or zoom out.
Please describe if you are using any other workflow.

  • Macbook display shows black and white lines when fullscreen

If i leave my Macbook on for a while without shutting down and then I view a photo or movie (in player or safari) fullscreen the screen shows just black and white lines. Sort of like bad tv reception. It has happened a few times and a reboot has fixed it but it comes back. Any ideas anyone?
    Thanks

I have a similar problem. Not sure you're on here (since the post is really old) but did you manage to work it out? How?
    My thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/19007548#19007548
My Imac froze earlier today as I was dragging an image from safari into indesig and when it froze the weirdest pattern overlaid the screen. It looked just like the opacity pattern from photoshop with grey and white squares. I turned the computer off using the power button and unplugged everything.
Now when I try to start it these weird lines appear on my start up screen (see link)...
    http://meijerladdaruppgrejer.wordpress.com/2012/07/24/oops/
as you can see the apple and the wheel appears as normal...
... then it moves to a normal looking white screen (perhaps a bit greener than usual) and around 30 seconds later freezes at the blue screen.
    I've tried the cmd + alt + p + r several times but it won't help.
If i press alt during start up I can see and choose my hard drive but just end up at the blue screen again.
Can I try starting it up in safe mode or something?

  • Why do I get a white background when pasting into Word

I am brand new to Photoshop and can't find an answer for this anywhere. Please help: When I open my company's logo (an EPS file) in Photoshop, it has a transparent background (the "checkered" one), which I DO want.  But then when I Select All/Copy/Paste Special into my Word documents, it comes over with a white background.  I do not want this, especially because the Word document has a gray background. So what happens is, the logo looks like it has a white box around it.  HOW do I copy and paste this EPS file into Word so that the background stays transparent??  Thank you!

Have you tried "Inserting" it rather than copy/paste?
The Insert Picture dialog does list EPS as an option.
Hey, you realise we might get banned for talking about a Microsoft program in an Adobe forum!

  • While editing saved PSD files, png elements have a white background when resized

    Hi,
I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.  When I open a psd file that I previously worked on and saved, when I try to resize or in some way change the different elements(layers) of the layout, they get a white background inside the bounding box for that layer.  The different elements(layers) where pulled in from png files that had transparent backgrounds.  When I initially resize or change those layers the white background doesn't appear.  It only happens when I reopen the saved psd file to make some changes to it.  What do I need to do to stop that from happening?
Thanks in advance for you help!
    Katheryn

You can't drag from the project bin in PSE 6 and 7. Items you move this way become a kind of semi-smart object on a special passthrough layer. Use copy/paste or drag from the layers palette of the png file into the main image window of the psd file.

  • Black and white printing when no colour

Is there a way of overcoming this on this machine - never had this problem before although judging by this thread it is not uncommon. I am printing text documents - why on earth would it need magenta to work? So far it has been allowing me to print in black and white but now it says magenta depleted - even though I haven't printed anythig in colour!

    Hi @JoannaJ,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I appreciate your frustration. However, this particular printer uses some color inks even when printing in black only. If you did run out of color and kept printing black only, you will cause problems with the printhead. FYI,HERE is the user guide to your printer, see page 98. I've also linked page yield information HERE.
    Best regards!

  • Black or white backgrounds for books

I am making my first book. For those who have seen the printed versions, any thoughts on the choice of balck or white backgrounds on pages - or a mix of both? Thanks Ladymavis

Yes. If you're anywhere near serious about music and/or planning to put a decent amount of video on it, get the 60. It's $100 extra for twice the memory and better battery life. The only reason I can see getting the 30 is if the difference in thickness is more important than the above to you, or if you don't care about having your whole library on your iPod at the same time and want to deal with playlist or manual synching.
The black looks amazing, and it's distinctive from all the whites out there, although I'm sure that will be changing into a healthy mix soon. But the black looks better. If you're planning on taking care of your iPod, keeping it in it's case and not tossing it around, get the black. But it does show scratches easier than the white, so if you're a nature freak looking to listen to some music to get you amped for that next mountain bike sesh, (or if you're racist to an insane degree) might want to consider the white.

  • Black or white background

Hi, I see a lot of animal pictures, dogs and horses with solid black backgrounds and I don't know how it's done in photoshop, but I've been told it can be done. Does anyone know how to do it? Thanks

    Well, there’re many ways....
Depending on the source-image... make a selection of the background...
Use Convert to Black and White / or use an Adjustment Layer with Levels /
or use a Fill Layer with Solid Colour / or...

  • How do you get rid of the white background when importing.mov into SWF ?

i'm working with a .mov file importing it into SWF
example here of the object:    http://www.highlandmeditation.com/?page_id=2288
is there a way in Flash CS4 where i can remove the white background that surrounds the movie?
its not on the .mov file originally only when i port into SWF
    thanks for your help

Well when you are finished drawing a picture when you select it you are able to make the drawings background transparent so when you put it on top of something else the background doesnt show up or you can have the background visible.

  • Isolating a coloured object against Black and White background

I would like to spice up some wedding videos that I am editing. I would like to be able to convert a clip to black and white and then colour in 1 single item. For example, make a red rose against the black and white. Is this a case of like painting the rose or using a matte to isolate the already coloured rose (ie. its natural colour)?? Pretty new to AE (version 6.5, btw).

I think Mylenium meant 'Pleasantville', not 'Smallville'.
