Unwanted Dock items opening onto Desktop?/yellow pop-up labels

Is there any way I can STOP a file stored in the Dock automatically opening up onto the Desktop when I bring its (open) application to the foreground?
For example: I may have several web pages stored in the Dock. If I click to use Safari, the last stored document leaps out - unwanted - into my desktop.
Same thing happens with my work applications - and it is an irritation.
On a different - but similar note: How do I turn off those small yellow 'labels' which pop-up when my mouse is placed over a button/link/icn etc. Again irritating... they most often state the obvious information (for an experienced user), and sometimes are an obstacle.

If I understand your problem correctly, this has nothing to do with the Dock other than the possibility that you have these files configured in the Dock to automatically open. Regardless of how the files are opened—by Dock or otherwise—the fact that the windows become unhidden when the application is brought to the foreground is a function of the application. Your solution, therefore, is specific to the applications in question.

  • Does anyone know how to turn off those yellow pop-up labels...

i know this is a small thing, but does anyone know how to turn off those yellow pop-up labels that appear when your mouse lingers over an icon or some other item for a bit ? you know the ones that give you a short description of whatever your mouse is pointing at.--thanks !

If an application has 'Tooltips' it sometimes gives you the option to turn them off somewhere in the Preferences.

  • Cannot create new folders on desktop. Cannot drag new items onto desktop. Desktop in Finder opens with Terminal. Not sure if this has anything to do with upgrading to Mavericks but I need help if anyone has ideas. Thank you.

I can no longer create new folders on my desktop. The option to do that is now light gray on the drop down menu and can't be selected.
I cannot drag new items onto desktop any longer either.
The Desktop in Finder opens with Terminal.
Folders and items on Desktop open and work normally.
Not sure if this has anything to do with upgrading to Mavericks but I need help if anyone has ideas.
    Thank you.

Take these steps if the cursor changes from an arrow to a white "prohibited" symbol when you try to move an icon on the Desktop.
Sometimes the problem may be solved just by logging out or rebooting. Try that first, if you haven't already done it. Otherwise, continue.
Select the icon of your home folder (a house) in the sidebar of a Finder window and open it. The Desktop folder is one of the subfolders. Select it and open the Info window. In the General section of the window, the Kind will be either Folder  or something else, such as Anything.
If the Kind is Folder, uncheck the box marked Locked. Close the Info window and test.
If the Kind is not Folder, make sure the Locked box is not checked and that you have Read & Write privileges in the  Sharing & Permissions section. Then close the Info window and do as follows.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    xattr -d com.apple.FinderInfo Desktop
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You should get a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”). Quit Terminal.
    Relaunch the Finder.
If the problem is now resolved, and if you use iPhoto, continue.
Quit iPhoto if it's running. Launch it while holding down the option key. It will prompt you to select a library. Choose the one you want to use (not the Desktop folder.)

  • Dock Won't Open and Desktop Flashes

When I log in the dock never opens and the desktop continuously flashes. I know exactly what is causing this but have no idea how to fix it.
Basically, there is a corrupt file in my downloads folder so the dock keeps restarting as soon as it opens causing my desktop to flash every time. This loop can be seen happening in the activity monitor.
The catch is that I can't access my downloads folder to delete the corrupt file as whenever I try to open my downloads folder in Finder, Finder will also restart and the window disappears.I have also tried accessing the downloads folder in safe mode but the same thing happens.
I need to find out how I can either delete the downloads folder altogether, or at least delete all files in it without using Finder. I am confident this will fix the problem but I have no idea how to do this.
This is only specefic to my login as I have created another user which works fine. However, I would prefer not to have to start using a whole new login if I can avoid it.
    Any assistance would be appreciated.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
In the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports (not "Diagnostic and Usage Messages") for crash reports related to the crashed process. The report name starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Open items move on desktop

When I have several items open on the desktop the one I'm working on is suddenly covered by others from 'behind'. It is particularly hard to use the scroll bar because putting the cursor near the 'edge' of an item seems to activate this effect. How can I turn it off?

Hi jacbouvier, Welcome to Apple Discussions.
It sounds like what is hapening may be that when you go to the scroll bar you are going a bit too far to the right and activating a window behind the one you are working one. If this is the case, just drag your active window further right to cover other windows or expand it cover them.
If this happens independently of your mouse actions let us know and we can troubleshoot it further.

  • For FF19 with PDFs, can the yellow "Open With Different Viewer" pop-up bar be disabled?

Hi all, I really like the built in PDF viewer because search as a I type works with, thanks FF devs!
But ... I get this yellow pop-up with many PDFs I view:
This PDF document might not be displayed correctly and a button for Open With Different Viewer
The thing is these PDFs seem fine and I have to close the warning every time.
Is there anyway this pop-up can be disabled or I can set an about:config setting to skip it? I can manually save a PDF or disable FF19's viewer if there's a noticeable problem with the FF19 viewer.

Ok, since the pop up bar can't be disabled I'll disable the built in PDF viewer. Too bad, I like the search as you type feature with PDFs but this un-disable-able pop-up bar is not user friendly.

  • Launched apps stay minimized on dock and won't open to desktop

I find that sometimes when I launch an app or minimize a running app it shows on the dock and will not "re-maximize" to the desktop when selected from the dock. The only way I can get the app to run on the desktop is to close the app and relaunch it. Does anyone know how to get a app minimized on the dock to open on the desktop when double-clicking the apps dock icon will not bring it up?

  • Internet Explorer immediately launches when try to open the desktop from the Start screen

When I log onto my computer, instead of the Start screen opening, the Desktop opens, AND when the Desktop opens, Internet Explorer immediately launches there.
Other times, when I log-on, my computer will open on the Start screen, but then immediately launches Internet Explorer on the Start screen.  I didn't click any Internet Explorer icons."
Also, when I am doing something on the Start screen and decide I want to go to the Desktop and I click the "Desktop tile" it switches me to the Desktop and launches Internet Explorer.  Again, I didn't click the Internet Explorer tile.
(I just wanted to go to the blank Desktop.)
There is something telling my computer to always open Internet Explorer first.  When I tried a warm boot, the problem went away momentarily, but returned after a few days"

    Hi,
    What is your current situation?
Have you checked the suggestions by Robert?
When opening PC the start menu will automatically start Internet Explorer in APP mode, and if we set Internet Explorer to open in desktop mode, then it will automatically open under desktop when start?
As we have no Internet Explorer in startup configured, so it won't start by itself. We may try to replace Internet Explorer item's position on the start menu with a different APP, then check what happens(drag and drop the desktop icon on the place of the
    Internet Explorer);
Is the MSN webpage your home page here? If not, then there might be some application on the startup automatically launches this page, we may take a try to disable one at a time to check; and if this is your default home page, try to replace it with another
    one, then change it back.
    From the last response of
this thread , it seems this is more related with the webpage than the browser?
    Best regards

  • Drag 'n drop dock items?

    Is there a way?
    Thanks in advance!

Hello and welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Maybe this will shed some light on using the Dock.
You can add icons to the Dock for applications, files, folders, servers, websites, QuickTime TV channels, and more. Some application icons in the Dock indicate the status of the application. You can view a pop-up menu with commands for the Dock icon by placing the pointer over the icon, and pressing the mouse button until the pop-up menu appears.
To add an item, drag its icon from a Finder window to the Dock. Put application icons to the left of (or above) the line in the Dock, and all other icons to the right of (or below) the line.
To arrange items in the Dock, drag them into the order you prefer.
To remove an icon from the Dock, drag it out of the Dock.
You can also add an application icon to the Dock by opening the application, then placing the pointer over its icon in the Dock, pressing the mouse button until a pop-up menu appears, and choosing Keep in Dock.
If you need further assistance, just post back.

When I open Firefox, a window pops up saying I have either opened or closed another window in Firefox even tho I haven't and nothing else is opened. I have to close that window to continue. How canI get it to stop?

Are you using the Default Theme? ''If not, switch to the Default Theme.''
If it isn't a problem with a 3rd party Theme, try the Firefox SafeMode. <br />
''A troubleshooting mode, which disables most other Add-ons.''
    # You can open the Firefox 4.0 SafeMode by holding the '''Shft''' key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    # Or use the Help menu item, click on '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' while Firefox is running. <br />
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut (without the Shft key) to open it again.''
If it is good in the Firefox SafeMode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. <br />

  • Macbook shutdown hanging - dock stays open

Hey, my first post (excuse the username, I made this account years ago...).
I've had a problem shutting down my new MBP Retina 13'' recently. Often (not every time however), when I go to shutdown the computer (Apple > Shut down > shut down), the computer appears to be shutting down normally (the menu bar and desktop icons disappear), but then the dock stays open, and does not shut down. I've waited and waited but it doesn't shut down. To get it to finally shut down, each time this happens, I have to hold the shutdown button and select shutdown again, and then after a few seconds shutdown occurs normally.
I spoke to Applecare on the phone, they told me to perform a safe boot and then it should be okay, and it was for a while until it started again. I went into an Apple Store today, and they said it's 99% likely that it's just something like an app or process causing it to hang. The guy suggested to toggle my login items on and off and see if that fixes it, which it didn't (I only have 2, Dropbox and Caffeine).
Can anyone relate or have any ways to fix this? It's not that bad, but just annoying enough to bother me. Thanks!

  • Double click on Dock to open an app?  Seems a change from 10.6.8.

Is it now necessary to double click on an icon in the Dock to open an app?  When did this change get made?  I find it more inconvenient compared to the single click on 10.6.8.  But then again I found 10.6.8 more convenient in general.  Hated losing virtual desktop grid and Back to My Mac.

Thanks for poking me to look at the console logs! That led me to find the error message:
    App Store[762] <Error>: CGBitmapContextGetBitsPerComponent: invalid context 0x112f90060
Which in turn pointed me to https://discussions.apple.com/message/15431640#15431640
Renabling Spotlight (see http://osxdaily.com/2011/12/10/disable-or-enable-spotlight-in-mac-os-x-lion/ ) allowed the App Store to work again!
Just why the App Store requires Spotlight to work is beyond me.
