Unwanted effects in Garageband

Everything was going fine in old Garageband. Then I updated to Lion and GB 6.0.4, and now everything I record in "real instrument" or "acoustic guitar" packs on all kinds of unwanted effects: something like a combination of compression and phaser; everything I record with "no effects" sounds like it's being played on a 1930's radio. I don't see anyone else complaining about this. Have I hit some sinister "save settings" that has screwed everything up? Am I going mad? Help!
sean

The effects are well hidden.
Show the "Smart Controls".
Then enlarge the Smart Controls" panel by dragging the upper border upwards.
Then open the info panel and you will see the Audio Units.
Now you can add Audio Unit filters.
There is no longer a panel like the former "edit" panel, where you can add arbitrary effects.

  • In need of more vocal effects for garageband

I'm pretty new to garageband and love the software and the community of folks helping one another.. Thanks to all ahead of time for your assistance.
I was just wondering if there are any programs or locations online to download voice effects for garageband? I've looked and have found a few spam sites and a few sites with software but no faq's or any real explanantion of their product. So i'm asking you folks for direction with this one since one of you might've gone through this before.
    Thanks again for your help.

    look at these web sites.
    http://www.mda-vst.com/
mda-vst has a series of AU you can use on your voice.
Detune is nice. Detune - Simple up/down pitch shifting thickener
Leslie is nice. Leslie - Rotary speaker simulator
I use them alone or in combination. Try their different presets or make your own extremes.
Forget about the Talkbox AU. It doesnt seem to work in GB but might in logic.
KTGranulator is a free delay line granulator.
    http://www.koen.smartelectronix.com/KTGranulator/
It has many presets. Use your mic and talk or sing into each preset to see what you like. It comes with 40 presets.
Presets 6&7 will give you a metallic sound called metallic 01 & 02.
Preset 16 is called "Android". Try them all you never know. Try combining them with "Detune" or "Leslie"!
Monstachorus is fun. Try the presets or experiment with new ones.
    http://www.macmusic.org/software/view.php/lang/en/id/3098/
These are just a few examples. Best thing to do if your looking for unusual ways to change your voice is to try them in every AU you can get a hold of. You just never know what you'll come up with.
also try the tremolo and phaser that come with GB, or even the drum and guitar effects. I like to use guitar effects for distorted voice effects.

  • Error when importing songs/effects into GarageBand

Whenever I try to import a song or iLife sound effect into garageband, it comes up with an error reading.
    Any ideas?

this may sound silly, since you've done these things, but in order try this
close the GB project first, then quit GB
    log out of your account
log back in, and repair permissions again
launch GB, and create another new project
after that, i'm not sure what else to suggest at the moment. i can't quite figure out what directory GB can't find if it's not the project itself, or a general permissions problem.

  • What happened to the sound effects in Garageband after in app purchase of $4.99 expansion pack?

I purchased a brand new MacBook Pro OS Mavericks and promptly began using Garageband 10.0.2.  There were many sound effects provided in the program (thunder, galloping horses, etc.), and I decided to complete the in app purchase.  Once I completed the download and install, I realized that I no longer had those sound effects.  Does any one know what happened to them?

Galloping Horses and thunder are not part of the GarageBand sound effects. You have probably other loop packages installed, for example the Final Cut Pro Sound Effects or the iLife Sound Effects.
Check, how your Loop Browser is set. The pop-up menu at the top of the Loop Browser should be set to "Loops" to have all loops available. Set the "Scale" to any, clear the search field. In the GarageBand Preferences, "Loops" pane disable "Keyword Browsing", filter for more relevant results.
Now you should be able to see all installed loops. If not, use the command "Reindex all Loops" from the "Loops" pop-up menu.

  • How can I activate the option amp design and effect in Garageband 10.0.1?

Please!!, My Garageband 10.0.1 has not activate the amp design and effect:
I press the option but in not activate.
    Help me please!!!
    Thanks

Just a hunch, but have you an electrick guitar track selected? The amp designer will not work for other audio tracks, it has to be an electric guitar track:

  • Vocal Effects in Garageband 2

I am looking specifically for an effect similar to that created by running a vocal through a Leslie speaker.
Yes, I am trying to record a vocal for Tomorrow Never Knows and I haven't found anything close to the Leslie, yet. I am running Garageband 2

The plug-ins in Logic provide a greater control than those of Garageband, and they come with a price: you need to have some working knowledge of how things work in Logic. Several factors can affect your sound, ranging from where you plugged things in (routing) to what you have plugged in. The problem here is that you're simply plugging in something with a blind assumption that because Logic is a better piece of software than Garageband, your sound will automagically be better. There is no magic plug-in.

  • Photo effects in Garageband

Is there a way to dissolve between photos in a Garageband podcast? Or is a cut between photos the only way to show the photos? I'm matching photos to a pre-recorded narration and can't create a slideshow first.

Is there a way to dissolve between photos in a Garageband podcast?
no, GB is not a video editor

  • I have a 1-hour movie that is edited video with scored music, narration, sound effects on GarageBand. I'd like to upload it onto Vimeo or another server.  Is there a way to do it?  It doesn't seem possible.

I used to sell this movie in iDVD format, but feel it's somewhat dated information (on boating) and would like to just offer it to viewers for free.  The imovie program allows for exports/shares to Vimeo, but Garage Band does not.  It offers iWeb, but when I tried that, I wasn't sure what to do with the movie preview when it was completed with the compression.

Of course, now the file's too large to upload into Vimeo to keep it in the free status so I need to break it up.
If dont need any major edits of the movie and you just want to break the movie in parts, and to upload it in three separate parts, you could use GarageBand's cycle region to mark the parts that you want to export. GarageBand will only export the part of a project that is highlighted by the yellow cycle region bar.
Click the Cycle button (with two curved arrows) in the control bar to turn on the cycle region.
Drag the ends of the cycle region to the position in the timeline where you want your exported movie part  to begin and end.
Then export to disk and repeat for the next parts of your movie.

  • How can i get more sounds and effects in garageband?

if you can help me please be specific im not very computer oriented.thx

An easy way to extend GarageBand with man more loops and instruments would be to buy Mainstage 2 as well. This will install all GarageBand JamPacks in a way that they are available in GarageBand and Logic as well, see: http://www.apple.com/de/logicpro/mainstage/
The price at the AppStore  is really a bargain, only 23,99€ (about 30$ US), much less than a single of the JamPacks used to cost.
Or see this post by HangTime for a link to free sound files:

  • HELP WITH EFFECTS IN GARAGEBAND!

    Hi,
I'm trying to find an effect that would kind of studder part of a sentence. So instead of it just saying countdown, it would say c-c-c-countdown.
    Thanks for the help.

    Hi,
The effect you want has to be applied via timing and redundancy otherwise in effect what you would have is an echo.
I was able to g g g g g g get the studder you here applied at the beginning and end of this song here.
    http://www.icompositions.com/music/song.php?sid=85493
Instead of dragging regions what I did was zoom in to isolate part of a vocal then use the playhead to split that portion away. Then highlight>copy>paste at appropriate intervals.
If you have more questions let me know.
    Good luck!

  • Unwanted swatch effect

Sometimes, when I attempt to change the color of a text by clicking on a color in the Swatches list, rather than change the color in the text, it keeps the original text color and adds the newly selected color in the area immediately around the text (in the shape of each of the text characters so that each character is thicker than the original). When this happens, how can I re-set the settings of the Swatch list to return it to its regular functions so I don't get the unwanted effect? Thanks.

Okay, I was able switch what the swatch panel was doing by hitting the x key (I had thought perhaps you meant a "key" icon on the screen), which is good, thanks. The only other thing is whether or not it is possible to change the text that had been changed previously to the undesired font appearance back to the regular appearance. Even after I switch the way the swatch panel works (via your directions), the already-changed text won't change back. Any thoughts?

  • Why don't the garageband audio effects show up in keynote?

I'm trying to embed a sound effect in a Keynote presentation, but there are no garageband sound effect files in the media tab. How can I import the sound effects into Keynote? I'm trying to do this with 56 third-graders. Please help!

The sound effects are stored in the System library:
              /Library/Audio/Apple Loops/Apple/iLife Sound Effects
You can drag them directly from this folder into your Keynote presentation, but I would not trust third graders with access to this library. Perhaps you could create a copy odf this folder in a shared folder, where the children can access the effects easily?
Or teach them to export audio clips of the sound effects from GarageBand to the Desktop (by creating a song with noting but a sund effect track) and then drag the effect from the Desktop to their presentation?

  • Connecting a microphone to Garageband

I have a good stereo Rhode microphone for my Nikon DSLR which I would like to use on my MacAir so I can input voice and sound effects into GarageBand.
I'm sure it is possible via some sort of mini mic jack to USB connector but feel that there may be compatibility problems.
Anyone have any good thoughts to share ?
(Questioned also posted on the MacAir forum)

A mini mic jack to USB connector does not work. The Mic signal is an analog audio signal and USB is a digital data signal. You need a proper interface, a so called audio interface, that converts the analog audio signal into a digital signal that OSX will "understand".
Make sure the audio interface has the proper jack to connect the mic to and works with OSX (Core Audio) so you don't need to install any additional driver.
In GarageBand, you then just select that audio interface as the audio source and you can record from your mic onto an Audio Track.
    Hope that helps

  • Recording Sound Effects

    Hello:
I'm developing an iOS app, and a sound effect that I purchased is not able to used in the app.  Since I can't find a similar sound effect that can be used, can I record the sound effect on GarageBand and use it in the app?  It will be a paid app, not a free one.
    Thank you in advance.

Your question is more related to app development, plus the GarageBand for the iPad (This is a GarageBand. for OSX forum).
If I understand you right, then I would look at the IAA (Inter-App Audio) feature. This is the new standard that lets you route audio (and other data) between audio apps on iOS devices. The standard was developed by Apple and is supported by a growing nuymbers of audio apps, including GarageBand for iPad.
Another similar format is Audiobus, that is also supported by many audio apps.
    Hope that helps

  • Why doesnt it play the synthesized sounds from my Keyboard in garageband

why wont garageband play all my cool sound effects from my keyboard? Its just outputing the grand piano. and I can then change it using the preset sound effects in Garageband but how do i directly record the sounds from my Keyboard?

    Andronikosxx wrote:
so your saying to plug the audio cable into the Phones/Output area of the keyboard into the headphones of the MAC?
Be sure to re-read those instructions. You don't go into the Mac's headphone jack as that is an output. You need to connect to the Mac's line-in (which, on mine, is right next to the headphone jack).
