Unwanted "frame" bars on correctly-sized footage?

I'm editing in Final Cut Studio 7 and even though my footage is the proper ratio (16:9) every time I render and play it back, it crunches it down to include black bars at the top and bottom. I've never used Final Cut for a 16:9 video before, as I was using AfterEffects to edit video for the last year or so at college.
This wouldn't be an issue if it were a personal video but I was asked to do this for work. I can't find anything relating to this in the sequence settings. Any thoughts?

  • No bars for 16:9 footage shots using XL2

I'm using FCS 2 (FCP 6), recently have completed my shooting using XL2 (Cine Gamma, Cine Matrix) 25p, 16:9.
Now, when imported footage and placed in the timeline (settings: PAL 48 kzh) I don't see top and bottom bars.
Even tried with PAL 48 kzh Anamorphic.
Its quite urgent to complete the project, hence I look forward to see your valued inputs and suggestions.
    Regards
    Roy

    Santu Roy wrote:
You mean it does not show bars in the Canvas? then why I see gray bars sometime?
    Hi Roy,
Yes I mean you are not supposed to see black bars in the Canvas!!
My guess is that the grey bars you are seeing are part of the Viewer or Canvas because you have changed the aspect ratio of your footage as you described above. They are not part of your footage! so you can ignore them. They are part of the FCP User Interface.
Here is a way to verify this...
Create a project in FCP Make sure that it is DV PAL 48 KHz with a 4:3 aspect ratio, i.e. Anamorphic is off.
Create a sequence in the project and make sure the Sequence settings are the same as the project settings.
Reset the View in FCP by selecting Window> Arrange> Standard.
You should now have 4:3 aspect Viewer and Canvas.
Now import some footage into the project. Doesn't matter what it is.
In the Bin Ctrl>Click on the imported footage and choose Item Properties> Format... from the Menu.
Scroll through the format properties until you see Anamorphic and make sure it is NOT ticked. This indicates that the footage will display as 4:3 which is what we want for the purpose of this test.
Click OK to exit the format properties.
In the BIn double click on the footage to load it into the viewer. The footage should fill the Viewer with no bars on top bottom or sides.
Drag the footage to the Canvas to insert it into the sequence. The footage should fill the Canvas with no bars on top bottom or sides.
Now go back to the bin. Ctrl>Click on the footage again and choose Item Properties> Format... again.
Scroll to the Anamorphic field again but this time turn on Anamorphic by clicking in the Clip column. A tick should appear next to Anamorphic and...
Grey bars will appear above and below the footage in the Viewer.
The same thing will happen in the Canvas if you select Sequence> Settings and click the Anamorphic check box in the General Tab.
Now... If these are the grey bars you are referring to then as you can see they are nothing to do with your footage. They belong to FCP. So you can ignore them. If you want to get rid of them Here's how...
Resize the Viewer and Canvas windows so that the grey bars dissappear, (drag the windows from the bottom right corner to resize). This will also free up more workspace area for you which is a bonus.
If you want to avoid seeing the grey bars again then save a custom window layout in Window> Arrange> Save Window Layout...
I think that should solve that one... Happy days!
Now for the second part of your question...
    Santu Roy wrote:
Else how do I get bars while exporting as MPEG2?
    There is more confusion here...
Why do you want the Bars in your MPEG2?
The only reason reason to create an MPEG2 with black bars from your source footage, (which is 16:9 FHA) is if you intend your master to be viewed or displayed only on 4:3 devices or frames. i.e. 4:3 TV's, 4:3 Computer Monitors, 4:3 Studio Monitors, 4:3 Projecters, or on a website in a 4:3 frame such as YouTube. Most of those just mentioned are "old technology" now.
All 16:9 devices will automatically display the footage correctly if set to do so.
If you really need to do this then it is something that can be easily done in Compressor using the letterbox filter. However, be sure you need it to do it. Remember that you are basically reducing the size of your original footage and also, if people view it on a 16:9 display it will look strange.
I've always referred to this process as "Deep letterbox 16:9 for 4:3 output" but I'm sure it is called other things as well.
Whether you decide to add the bars to your MPEG or not, remember it is something you would do on your edit master so you can go ahead with the edit without the bars for now anyway.
    Hope this helps you,
    Best regards.

  • How do I output the smoothest video when changing or mixing frame rates from the original footage?

I have been experimenting with various Media Encoder settings, and wondered if there was anything else I can try to get the smoothest video output possible, especially when changing frame rate and possibly resolution.  For clarification, let me start from the beginning and explain what I'm doing and what I've tried so far.  I'll try to be as brief as possible, but if I do go into too much detail, I apologize.
My original footage is AVCHD 1080p - 60fps.  (my camera only does 60fps...specifically 59.94fps)  We're not talking interlaced video here, I'm staying away from that.  This is definitely full frame, progressive video at 60 frames (not fields) per second.  My output will ultimately be for the web.  I have been keeping my output codec (H.264) and bit-rate (VBR 2-pass, relatively high-bitrate) consistent, and have been trying numerous output options and even sequence settings to see what would yield the best results.  I am using Premiere Pro CS5.5 along with Media Encoder.  Here's what I've done and the results I've observed:
    1.  I created a sequence with 1080p - 59.94fps settings to match my original footage.  I then output both 1080p and 720p versions at 59.94fps, and at 29.97fps.  The 59.94fps output files looked absolutely great, as would be expected.  Extremely smooth.  The 29.97fps output files were generally smooth, but not near as smooth as the 59.94fps.  This is expected since it's half the frame rate as my original footage.  However, my question is this:  What exactly is Media Encoder doing when "down converting" from 60p to 30p?  From a technical stand point, is it dropping every other frame?  I'm just curious to understand exactly what it does.  I tried the Frame Blending option as well, and that only yielded a bit more blur to the images which wasn't desirable for any of the output files.
    2.  Just to see what would happen, I created a sequence with 1080p - 29.97 settings.  I then output both 1080p and 720p versions at 29.97fps.  The video was much more choppy in these cases, even with Frame Blending on.  Now, I know not matching my sequence settings with my original media isn't ideal, but I again just want to understand why this yields less smooth video than the 29.97fps options above.  Why does cutting the sequence settings frame rate in half from the original, then outputting the same frame rate as the sequence yield video that is not as smooth?
    3.  Next, I wanted to try mixing frame rates to see how Premiere and Media Encoder handled the footage and output files.  Premiere handled it great, no issues there.  However, I had some interesting things happen when I output the files.  Here's what I did:  I created a sequence with 1080p - 59.94fps to match my original footage.  Then I took the same exact footage that was in my sequence, copied it in my project panel and interpreted it at both 23.976 and 29.97 fps, yielding slow motion video.  The slow motion video looked great in Premiere, so I went ahead and just added it to my sequences, along with the original 59.94 footage.  I also created separate sequences for the 29.97 and 23.976 footage respectively, each with matching sequence settings, then added a nested sequence to another original footage sequence (with 59.94fps sequence settings) to see which yielded the best results.  Basically, I'm trying to output 59.94fps that match my original footage, but also throw in some slow motion footage at different framerates.  I'll explain my results in a moment as they are a bit convoluted, however, here is my question:  When mixing frame rates and trying to output the smoothest video, am I going about this the right way?  I would assume you would use your sequence settings that match the original footage (which is what the majority of the footage will be), then bring in a nested sequence for the slow motion (as oppose to just dropping the slow motion video directly into my main sequence), and then output to the same frame rate of the majority of the footage, in this case 59.94fps. Is there a better workflow for this?
The results to #3 above were as follows.  Initially, it looked like it didn't matter if I nested the slow motion sequence into my main sequence, or simply dropped the actual slow motion video into my original 59.94fps sequence.  It seemed to produce smooth results either way.  Frame Blending blurred the video a bit, but didn't seem to make much difference, and quite honestly I like the footage without Frame Blending in general.  However, when I closed down Premiere, and opened the output files later (opening in Quicktime), the footage looked choppy.  In fact, it would go from choppy to smooth and back, almost like it had an irregular cadence (don't know if I'm using "cadence" in the right context here).  I would then open up Premiere again, import the output footage into my project panel, and play the footage in Premiere, and it would play back smooth again. Is this a Quicktime issue?  I was playing 1080p 59.94fps files when this happened, so maybe it's just because it's a large file.  Doesn't seem to have issues with the 720p files I created.  But it sure threw me off with my testing because I then started second guessing the settings I was using.  My iMac is the latest 2011 model with plenty of RAM, so I wouldn't think it's the computer.  Thoughts?
    4.  Next, I noticed on ALL my output files (again, using the H.264 codec from Media Encoder) that the color of my video seemed to flatten quite a bit.  It seems that the original footage has more contrast and saturation than the output files.  I figured maybe this was just how it was, but when I re-imported the output files back into Premiere, they looked IDENTICAL to the original footage.  And in Media Encoder's Source/Output windows, I don't see any difference there either. Is Quicktime again the culprit here, doing some odd things to the color of my videos?
    5.  Regarding Frame Blending, when is the best situation to enable this option in Media Encoder?  I've read it is when mixing frame rates, but I honestly didn't see too much of a change except for a bit more blur, which I didn't care for.
    6.  Lastly, my conclusion is that 60fps yields the smoothest video, which is an obvious conclusion.  However, I know that 60fps isn't the best or easiet frame rate for web delivery.  It seems 30p is more the standard.  Are there any integrated web players that would play 60fps?  Can you get 60fps video on YouTube/Vimeo?  If yes to any of these questions, can they do 720p and 1080p at 60fps?
Those are all my questions.  I hope I am clear enough without being overly wordy and hopefully I didn't put too many questions into one post.  Thanks in advance for any insight, I really appreciate it.

Did you ever figure out which output worked the best? I have the same original footage; trying to determine the best output settings to make a dvd for tv.
    thanks!

  • How to get rid of an unwanted grey bar in preview mode

Hi, I am trying to create a mobile site for a client, but when I preview how it looks I get an unwanted grey bar (see image) I started out with the default size and got the problem, so I tried increasing the width but it hasn't worked. Thanks for any help given:)
Also the menu bars don't look the same size, is it something I've done?

It looks like you are using the Muse preview...I use to have the same problem...2 things
1.) Make sure you don't have any anchor points on either side of the website (sometimes they are hidden so you may need to highlight the area)
2.) the other option is to just upload the site (or to a testing site) and check it on your phone sometimes its just a bug in the preview.
    Hope that helps.

  • Crashing when color correcting C500 footage

Working with CC 2014 has been a lesson in patience from the beginning.
I am working on a $10,000 brand new Mac Pro and we get crash crash crash when trying to color correct C500 footage with Magic Bullet Looks.

As a whole, I find Premiere Pro Cc 2014 to be less than stable. Any time a stress is put on it, like a codec which requires some heavy lifting, it freaks out.  I never had these types of  problems in other edit systems, ever. We have to tread so lightly within this program as not to upset it. It is far from being used as a serious professional tool in my opinion, yet.

  • How to best correct outdoor footage

I have about 2 min of footage I shot at an out door event. I have a DVX100B and put the ND filter switch to 1/64 because it was so bright. Now that I am editing, all the footage has a blue cast to it. What is the best color correction formula to use to reverse this in FC6 (if possible) or to make it look at least better than it does. Just for a website. Thanks!

For future reference, always remember to white balance for each lighting situation even when you change the ND filter and as the sun changes position. Don't rely on auto white balance. AWB is set for average scenes where available light is friendly, little bunny rabbits skip and play, and butterflies land on your shoulder. I don't think that a single outdoor show/event that I have done has ever looked right with AWB.
Speaking from experience, I know how difficult this can be to see correctly outdoors. Don't rely on the LCD screen for color and exposure when outdoors. Use the eye piece for more control or an external hooded monitor (when possible).
A step that like to use at the beginning of a shoot is to turn on bars to make sure the view finder brightness is set correctly. When the VF brightness is tweaked, it can give you a false sense of exposure. Look at the black/gray/white sections below the color bars, there should be a subtle difference, not a distinct difference, between the dark gray and black squares.
As for your zebra issues, another method is shutter speed (does the DVX have that capability?). A faster shutter speed will reduce the amount of light hitting the sensor. Just make sure to watch what's going on in your frame as shutter speed can affect how motion looks on your footage.
    Happy shooting!

  • Add 16:9 bars on a HDV footage

My footage is HDV 1080i (1440X1080). I want to add 16:9 black bars on it, because I like the look. This is for just for an extra feature in the DVD, the main movie will be in Widescreen.
1 How can I add the black bars in FCP ?
2 On a widescreen TV, it will appear full screen with the bars on top and bottom.
On a 4:3 TV: In a pan-scan or a 16:9 anamorphic, it will be fine.
Now what about a 16:9 letterbox ? From what I understand, it will put black bars on top of my black bars... That might not look good if the black is not 100 % black...
Does anyone has a suggestion on this? Does the 16:letterbox on a 4:3 TV is the most common when watching DVD in the US?

Well, if you add bars to the top & bottom of a 16x9 file and play that back on a 16x9 tv, what do you think you're going to get?
Either a 16x9 frame squashed to 2.35:1 or so, or a 4x3 letterboxed image in the middle of the screen, with black bars on the sides.
It sounds to me like both the main feature and special features were filmed 16x9. And you want them both to display the same way. So why are you trying to force a different workflow? I mean, do it if you want to, but make sure you screen it on a widescreen TV before you mass produce it, because I think you'll see what I'm trying to say, since I'm obviously not explaining it that well on here.

  • Can no longer enter data in the address bar {url Bar}, it correctly follows data from google search bar. It was a 1 month old installation so not a lot of complications

I was not adding anything to Firefox. I Refused tool bars embedded in several application installs on this new computer. Was working fine. Then had a problem with Google search, restored default values and re-tooled Firefox. At this point all worked fine. Then my url, address bar changed color to the same color as the program shell, a grey brown as opposed to the white it was before. With the change in color it no longer allows me to change the data showing in the bar. I can not delete or add data. I used to add a url and navigate to the domain. Now I can not

    Greetings,
TY for the reply, the information was enlightening to be sure. I never knew safe mode was an option with Firefox. I have so many tasks running that I didn't want to shut things down. What I did is turn off some of the last plug-ins I installed. That did not fix the problem at least in the first look. What happened next was very interesting none the less. I had a moment of mouse spastic wrist syndrome and accidentally moved a tab in such a way that it opened in a new window. The URL bar was white and editable. So I moved all my tabs to the new window and everything works as it should. I have restarted Firefox this morning and it came back with the bar editable and I am speechless to understand what I may have done to correct the problem if anything ??

  • Time stamp wrong in skype and thunderbird while menu bar has correct time

I noticed in my applications like Skype, MSN Messenger, Thunderbird email that the time stamp was wrong. But the Menu Bar clock and the system preferences Date and Time were correct. My exact error is that the app timestamp always showed the time as PM.
I googled for answers and several topics mentioned a locked / misplaced / corrupted localtime file.
However, The real reason is that I had a custom time format under Languages and Text system preference. For some reason the custom format showed morning as PM and evening as PM. I opened the preference, selected time, and changed it from Custom to USA.
There are several similar errors (always showing 20 before time, ie 20:43, always is 7 oclock, ie 7:32, or etc) that were mentioned in other tickets I read.
I followed this post to go into languages and Text to correct the custom time format; http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11503087 (see last post. IGNORE the part about plist!)

Mail displays the date & time according to your System Preferences > International > Formats settings. The specific format used (i.e. Short, Long, etc.) may depend on the column width. It looks like there is something wrong with your Dates > Customize or Times > Customize settings there...
    > I've tried expanding the date column width in Mail, and changing to US
(instead of International) Date / Time format in my system preferences
Not sure what you mean. I don’t see an “International” option anywhere other than the name of the International preferences panel itself...

  • Why don't Grapher's Frame Limits work correctly with saved Grapher files using multiple equations on Mountain Lion?

    Hi,
I generally enjoy using Grapher in OS X (I am using Mountain Lion v10.8.2). However, I have repeatedly encountered what seems to be broken basic functionality in setting the limits on the display frame  (View> Frame Limits…). When opening saved Grapher files with multiple valid equations in them (equations which include constant terms defined as sets of numbers), I repeatedly get the following behavior:
    1. Frame limits are not correctly saved. As in, the file opens with a different view than it was saved and closed in.
    2. Frame limits no longer work as expected. For example, I might set the Y axis frame limits to be -2 to 2, but the Y axis of the frame display will run from about -1.95 to about -0.35.
3 Performance is degraded. Making a change to the frame limits (for ecxample, changing the Y frame limits to -2.2 and 5 in an attempt to display something approximating the range -2 to 2) take an inordinate amount of both processor time and clock time. The spinning ball appears and hangs out far longer than is welcome, and at times seems to hang requiring a force quit of Grapher.
These problems occur regardless of coordinate system.
Is there a solution? If I create a new file and start from scratch the problems reappear. The problems reappear across a wide range of 2D equation types.
Is Grapher simply broken in this regard?
    Thanks for the input.

    Bonjour Lexy-Lou,
You are right, the bug was born with Grapher as you may read on the website
    <http://y.barois.free.fr/grapher/> :
Grapher’s bugs and their remedies (OS X in French).
Bug nr. 1. (Grapher 1.1, 2.0, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3). When modifying the main 2D window size, the graph length and height already formatted (menu Format) are changed : axis scale values stay the same, added objects remain same size on the same places (unit pixel) relative to the graph left upper corner ; but the graph view changes for the ratio H/L do so : very annoying !
The remedy : To restore the 2D graph after changing the window size : menu Format > Layout > Size > redo the initial choice (paper size or L and H values)… or avoid having to do so by selecting a window large enough to begin with.
Proposed correction : making the graph size independent of the main window’s one.
Bug nr. 2. (Grapher 1.1, 2.0, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3). Saving is wrong in 2D (menu File > Save, Save as, Save a copy as). Are not seved : the last location on the screen of the main window, the graph size, the maximum and minimum values of the ordinate scale : very very annoying !
Note : The new windows of Grapher 1.1 (Grapher secondary window > New Graph > 2D or 3D Graph) always open in the same place on the screen( OS X 10.4.11 configured in French) depending on the language used by Grapher : if it’s English, well placed and covering most of the screen, if it is French, the windows are half length but same height and are located on the right side of the screen. This anomaly disappeared with Grapher 2.0, 2.1, 2.2 (English or French).
The remedy : to restore the 2D graph after opening a GCX files (.gcx) : menu Format > Layout > Size > redo the initial choice (Paper size or L and H values) to be done twice ; then menu View > Frame limits... > enter minimum and maximum vaues of the y scale. This requires to note four numerical values, L, H, y-min, y-max, for example at the top of the equation list (or at the bottom : see bug nr. 27).
Proposed correction : complete saving in 2D.
For the full list of Grapher's bugs please download "Instructions for Use - Grapher" (English) or "Mode d'emploi de Grapher" (French). Quick glance at the Contents (pages 2 & 3) you'll be surprised by the possibilities of Grapher.app despite the bugs.
      Enjoy,
    Au revoir,

  • Unwanted frame blending look after transcode

    For some reason,
When I burn a DVD in Encore and play it on a TV or a computer (anything) it seems to have a frame blending look where if you pause the DVD at any point, you will see two frames blended together like they are both at 50% opacity.  I have no idea why it looks like this. Also, when scrubing through the video in Encore after it has already been transcoded, I will see the frame blending.  And if it has not been transcoded yet, I see no frame blending.
    I work on a PC with CS3.
I use the recomended transcode settings everyone recomends (23.98 for 24P footage, progressive, CBR 8, and the file is AVI)
I also played the original AVI file to make sure it wasn't an issue before the transcoding/burning in Encore and it looked fine (no frame blending look).
Please help me out if you can, I am about to enter my film into festivals and want it to look the best it can.
    Thanks!
    -Daniel Soderberg

IIRC, En CS5 changed a few default settings. I do not think that those were eliminated, just the defaults from OFF to ON, or ON to OFF were added. Likely one of those settings made the difference. Do not recall if any of the Frame Blend options were in that group, but they could well have been.
Glad that CS5 made the difference for you, and good luck,

  • How to eliminate unwanted menu bar icons?

When I installed all the software for my new Canon MP640 printer-copier-scanner it put a "Canon IJ Network Scanner Selector" icon in the menu bar. It doesn't seem to do much - and I really don't want another nanometer of space taken-up by unwanted menubar icons... Does anyone know how to remove this?

OK the cmd-drag didn't work - I had tried that but appreciate the suggestion!
As to your suggestion: In Accounts I find a Login program called *Canon IJ Network Scanner* (checked to be hidden) - and it is in /Library/Printers/Canon/IJScanner/Utilities/Canon IJNetwork Scanner Selection. OK but if I remove this from the login - will it remove just the menu bar icon or will I then lose the ability to use my MP640 as a scanner?
When I open the program by double-clicking it, I get the same screen as when I choose it from the menu bar. I just don't want this menubar "icon" taking up real estate --
The HELP says this: (The icon itself does not show in this paste so I just put in underlines__- it is the image of a printer with the top opened and an arrow indicating a scan direction or something.

  • Getting correct timecode footage to client..

I filmed some stuff for a client in hdv, he now wants to review the footage and mark good stuff for editing but doesn't have a means of playing HDV tapes. So I'm struggling to get him the stuff in a format he can view and more importantly with the correct timecodes on them.
I've captured the tapes in mini dv format and have so far tried playing them out to my camera and capturing them as minidv but this gives me a new time code (and no audio??). tried burning him a DVD but that doesn't have the time code. he has imovie, if i copy the captured quicktime files over to him could he open them in this?
    thanks

apply the timecode filter, set it to reader, export and burn him a dvd-- or several dvd's-- or just burn tapes. Or rent him a deck.
