Unwanted messages showing up in Drafts folder

Hi there. I've been having a problem for a while now, and when switching computers it followed me, so I figure enough is enough. In Mail, I have old messages, both ones that I've sent and ones I've received, showing up in the Drafts folder. I can go in and delete it (only one shows up at a time), but as soon as I click out of the Drafts folder, another one appears.
It's not really a life-threatening problem, obviously, but it's kind of obnoxious. Any ideas? I saw in a couple of other posts that it was possible to go into the Preferences and uncheck something in Accounts/Mailbox Behaviors that had something to do with Drafts, but I don't see anything in there.
Thanks.
Jeff

Hi Jeff.
There is a kind of index corruption that causes messages to randomly appear in a mailbox different from where they’re supposed to be. The most amazing (and apparently also the most common) variant of the problem is the messages appearing in Outbox, which causes Mail to think they’re waiting to be sent and dutifully proceed to try to send them. It looks like the “destination” mailbox is Drafts in your case, but the problem is almost certainly the same.
This is not to be confused with the problem of a copy of sent messages remaining in Drafts after having sent them, which apparently only affects IMAP accounts set to store drafts on the server, and which can by “fixed” by telling Mail to store drafts locally instead.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, and making sure that there’s enough space available on the startup disk (a few GB, plus the space needed to make a backup copy of the Mail folder), try this:
1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. Make a backup copy of this folder, just in case something goes wrong, e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down. This is where all your mail is locally stored.
3. Locate Envelope Index and move it to the Trash. If you see an Envelope Index-journal file there, delete it as well.
4. Open Mail. It will tell you that your mail needs to be “imported”. Click Continue and Mail will proceed to re-create Envelope Index — Mail says it’s “importing”, but it just re-creates the index if the mailboxes are already in Mail 2.x format.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder.

    Hi, here's a nice bug.

I called apple about this bug a few weeks ago. It is an error with any POP email accounts. You cannot move emails between folders, they dissapear. They are working on the problem they told me.

  • Several messages were in the Drafts folder when my isp went off line suddenly and when it came back hours later the draft messages were gone. How do I find them

I had 8 or 10 messages in the drafts folder. I had Thunderbird open when my isp had equipment problems and suddenly went off line on February 19, 2015. When it came back online the next morning all those drafts were gone. Is there some way I can retrieve them? If so, please send directions on how to do it. Thank you for any help you can give me.

The top folder was Local Folders with Inbox, Sent Mail, Drafts, Trash and Archives under it. I had several messages in Archives and they went away when the Drafts messages went. Actually the only folder that wasn't emptied was the inbox. Those messages re-downloaded from the web mail.
What I understand from what you've written is that unless something was done when the mail account was set up, all my mail was on att/yahoo mail and they're the ones that lost my drafts.
If I'm wrong about it being an IMAP account and it was really POP, would that make a difference?

  • Exchange 2013 SP1: messages still stuck in Drafts folder

    Hello!
The second question on Exchange 2013SP1 that I asked when I was working with Exchange 2013:
New lab setup: a Windows 2012R2 DC (server1) + Exchange 2013SP1 (server2). Exchange 2013SP1 installation completed successfully. I created three mailboxes: [email protected], [email protected], [email protected]
Now when I'm trying to send a message (from user1 to user, for example) it gets stuck in the Drafts folder.
I manually set up my DNS server in ECP:
as described here: http://thoughtsofanidlemind.com/2013/03/25/exchange-2013-dns-stuck-messages - but the problem persists.
    And this problem
"On every single installation / that I’ve done of Exch 2013 in multiple labs, when set as a single mailbox server, messages have never been able to leave the “drafts” folder. Not a single instance where it worked correctly. Messages
leaving a mailbox, destined to the exact same server do not route, let alone use any send-connector to leave the organization.
Now, take it to the next step, and install a second mailbox server. The very second that services finish installing, and AD replication (if using multiple sites) settles down, mail-flow on the first server starts working absolutely flawlessly. Whatever
changes are done to AD from the second mailbox server being installed in regards to mailflow, it completely resolves the issues of the first server holding onto the messages."
...is exactly the same as mine...but in Exchange 2013 SP1 ( Messages leaving a mailbox, destined to the exact same server do not route).
Can anybody from MS tell me if it's a bug or by design??? I've NEVER had an Exchange installation without this issue...
    Thank you in advance,
    Michael

    Hi,
I have never come across such a situation in my labs(all roles install in a single server), and there is no Microsoft documentation mentioned this issue.
In addition, Microsoft does not oppose the Exchange installed on a single server(although not recommend).
I recommend you check if all the exchange services are running, and try to restart Exchange Mailbox Transport Submission & Exchange Mailbox Assistants services.
    Hope this helps!
    Thanks.

  • Problem with sent messages showing up in drafts

When I send an email, it does send successfully but many times won't show up in my 'sent' file but shows up twice in my drafts file . . is there a setting that has inadvertently been changed or ??
    Any assistance most appreciated

    Hello Imlearningalot,
Thank you for the question.  This may be caused by a miscommunication with your email server.  You may want try turning off “Store draft messages on the server” in Preferences > Accounts > Mailbox Behaviors:
Store draft messages on the server
Draft messages stored on the mail server are available when you use your account on other computers.
This option is available only for IMAP and Exchange accounts.

  • Sent Messages in Mail are being Stored in Drafts Folder

    Hi,
This does not happen to every message only some, but it happens to really important messages - I'm a freelance writer and it happens when I'm sending a resume or talking to a client.
When I hit send, the message shows up in my sent mail as being sent, but it also remains stored in my drafts folder. Sometimes I send a message and it shows sent and then a day later, that same message is in my drafts folder. A couple of times, even though they ended up in my sent folder, the recipient did not receive the message. Sometimes they receive them sometimes they don't, but I never know.
Can someone explain this and help me resolve this issue? Has this happened to anyone else?
    Thanks.
    IMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi Staci.
If Mail put the message in Sent, that means
the outgoing (SMTP) server told Mail that the message
would be delivered. If the message never reached its
destination, it could be because the SMTP server
didn’t fulfill its promise or because the message was
filtered out by either the recipient’s incoming mail
server or the recipient’s mail client for some
    (probably spam-related) reason.
The fact that Mail sometimes fails to remove the copy
of the message from Drafts after sending it is
a glitch that has nothing to do with whether the
message was received or not, and appears to happen
only with IMAP-type accounts configured to store
    drafts on the server.
So what type of mail account is this (POP, IMAP,
.Mac)? If IMAP or .Mac, what are your Preferences
Accounts > Mailbox Behaviors > Drafts settings?
    Hi,
I use .mac for email and I prior to writing, I checked my preferences and made sure to uncheck "store drafts on the server." I'll see how that goes. Thank you though for answering my question.

  • TS3276 Lion mail;  sent emails show up in the draft folder as well as the sent folder.  Often the draft will appear a day after the email was actually sent

    Lion mail
Emails that have been Sent show up in the Draft folder as well as th e Sent folder.
Often they may not show up in Draft folder until the next day.
Is there a correction for this?

no,  I only use mac as my incoming and outgoing server.
What I did was un check the draft box in the mail preferences,
and will see if that works.  Since I use only the computer for emails
the cloud isnt being used to its max anyway.

  • Mail quits unexpectedly, infinite messages in drafts folder.

Background info: I'm using an imap aol mail account and the mail application on Leopard 10.5
I was writing an email this morning and continued to notice that every few seconds I saw "Sending message" appearing under Mail Activity. Thinking that it was sending the message I was writing before I was done with it, I went and took all accounts offline. After finishing my message, I took all accounts online again, but then the application quit unexpectedly. I relaunched and it did the same thing again. So I went in and went offline before it quit on me again, and found 71 drafts in my draft folder. All the times when it said 'Sending message' were stored as a draft. I deleted them, and it quit again. Upon relaunching I found that the number of messages just kept increasing. Thus, infinitely many messages were in the draft folder.
My question is how can I completely remove the mail application and all it's preferences so that I can start it again?

I think this thread might contain a possible solution: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4848042&#4848042

  • Messages in Drafts Folder gone missing

    Hi folks,
I'm having an annoying problem with mail at the moment. I had 6 or 7 messages saved in the drafts folder of Mail.app, just now I went to do some work on one of the drafts and discovered that it is not in the drafts folder, along with another missing draft, leaving me with only 5 drafts.
I have done a search in Mail.app of all the folders using appropriate keywords, did the same with spotlight to search for it but it has totally disappeared. I have tried searching the forums here and on Google and the only clue was to rebuild the mailbox, but when i tried to do this the "Rebuild Mailbox" option was greyed-out so I couldn't do it.
This is on 10.4.4 with Mail.app version 2.0.5
Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

If you open the Mail folder, in the Finder (Home/Library/Mail/the subject account's POP folder) and find the Drafts.mbox folder within the POP account folder for this account, what are the files within? In the folder within, named Messages how many messages (.emlx) files are shown?
    More info, please.

  • Drafts are not moved out of drafts folder

A strange thing started happening recently on my Mac. When I send an email the email message remains in the Draft folder after it is sent. It shows up in the Sent folder, but still remains in the Draft folder. Anyone else having this problem?

  • All my sent messages showing up im my drafts folder

I have 2 IMAP accounts set up in Mail. They all work fine, except that every email that I type (sent or not sent) shows up in my Drafts folder for that account. I have to go in once a week and delete 100+ drafts. It has made it very hard to actually use the drafts folder.
Mailbox Behavior for Drafts is set to "Store draft messages on the server" and for Sent is set to "Store draft messages on the server", Delete "Never"

Same issue. You get each draft with more and more words from the email as it seems to save every couple of words. Instead of saving just one file, it saves a new one for each draft autosave. Also, they stay there when you've sent the email itself.
It is only with IMAP. I've never had problems with Apple Mail, but there seems to be numerous problems with it and IMAP accounts - as seen on this forum. They are serious as we use email as a major mode of communication.
There is actually not one properly solved discussion about IMAP and Apple Mail in this forum. Does anyone know how we go about getting some 'official' assistance regarding the general IMAP woes of Apple Mail. Is there somewhere I can bullet point the outstanding bugs and common problems?

  • Mail Messages Going To Drafts Folder

Almost every mail message I compose - both new messages and replies - are showing up in the Drafts folder.  These seem to be identical to messages after they are sent and appearing in the Sent folder.  I'm not saving them at any time, so why would these messages go to "Drafts"?
    Thanks,
    JD

While indeed unchecking this option stops the behavior, it's not the best of solutions.  The options to save drafts on server is available with any decent IMAP program, and generally is very beneficial.  Say I start a message on my Mac, and then have to leave before it's done.  If it's saved to the server, I can then pick this message up later on my iPhone or iPad and complete it and send it.  Or I can start it on an iOS device, have it save to the server from there, and then pick it up on my Mac later to complete.
So, the functionality of "Save drafts on server" is widely known amongst IMAP clients, and it would be nice if Apple Mail would simply replace a previous draft of a particular message with the latest version rather than piling up multiple versions of the email.  Also, it's customary that when you eventually send the message, the drafts also disappear.
It would also help if there was a way to increase the auto-save time to a longer setting so that they don't pile up so fast.

  • I have a message in my draft folder which causes mail to quit. I cannot delete it?

I have a message in my draft folder which shuts down the mail program. I am unable to delete it.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if Safari crashed, you would enter "Safari" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.
