Unwanted nested groups and clipping paths

Can anyone tell me why when I embed one Illustrator file inside another Illustrator file it creates repeating nested groups with clipping paths? The original file did not have clipping paths or nested groups.

An Illustrator file has two parts and when placing you just access the wrong part for your purpose. What you want to do is open the other file and then copy/paste.

    PS CS6: It'd be helpful to have the option to collapse or expand the nested groups and layers all at once.  Autodesk Maya has a similar feature in it's outliner that allows for you to do this.

    And as Jeffrey Tranberry answered there:
    • Open/close all layer groups (folders) at the current level of hierarchy: Cmd-click the arrow next to the group - This is handy when you want to open/close, say, all the top-level groups without disturbing the open/closed state of any groups nested within them.
    • Open/close all layer groups nested within the current one: Opt-click the arrow next to the group - This is nice when you want to open/shut a bunch of nested groups, without affecting any that lie outside the target group.
    • Open/close all layer groups, period: Cmd-Opt-click the arrow next to a group So, to keep things simple: when in doubt, Cmd-Opt-click a group’s arrow and you’ll collapse/expand all groups.
    * On Windows please substitutes Ctrl for Cmd and Alt for Opt. .

  • Illustrator CS6: deleting unwanted items outside a clipping path

    Hi everyone,
    I'm creating a logo that employs a stippled texture (a half-tone) in various sections of objects comprising the logo. I've placed the stipple where I want it, created a clipping path to capture the area. Now I have all these other points that I don't need that I want to delete.
    Is there anyway short of releasing the clipping path, manually delete unwanted sections of the stipple and then re-apply the clipping path again? It would be like 'Applying Mask' in photoshop.

    You can enter isolation mode without releasing the clipping mask. Beyond that I don't see a way to do this automatically unless you want to make your stipples a compound path or group and use Pathfinder operations. Unfortunately AI doesn not have inside/ outside detection for these kinds of scenarios that wouzld allow to quickly select separate objects in this fashion...

  • Exporting Images and Clipping Paths

    I ran into a problem exporting images the was previously reported by Ruvan Fernando on Jan 25, 2006, but nobody had responded, so I'm trying again...
    I'm using the SDK to open images and then save them back out with different colorspaces, resolution, etc. When I have an image that has a clipping path in it, when it's saved, the clipping path is missing.
    I am copying all the source image attributes to the destination image attributes.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    I tried dragging it, and it gave the original version.
    At Share there are; Print, Email, Desktop, HomePage, .Mac Slides, Order prints, Send to iDVD, Burn Disk, Export
    I tried Desktop and it put the current image do my wallpaper.

  • Ideal way to report on Nested Groups and their Members - I can get the script to work if there's one group, but not if there is two or more

    Hi All,
    I like to keep track of Groups and Users added into our Domain Admins.  Yes, it should always be minimal, but if I can have a daily report just to be certain, I'll sleep better.
    The following works just fine if there is a single nested group.  I cannot get it to work properly if there is more than one.  I'm hoping you'll see what I'm missing.
    Works fine:
    $admins = get-adgroupmember "domain admins"
    foreach($i in $admins){if($i.objectClass -eq "group"){ get-adgroupmember $i.samaccountname |foreach {New-Object PSObject -Property @{ username = $_.name;Group = $($i.name)}} | select username,group | export-csv c:\Users_and_Groups.csv -Notypeinformation}}
    Does not work well.  Result is that the "Group" information doesn't change to the correct group:
    $myCol=@()
    foreach($admin in $admins){if($admin.objectClass -eq "group"){$myCol+=$admin.samaccountname}{foreach($i in $myCol){get-adgroupmember $i | foreach {New-Object PSObject -Property @{ username = $_.name;Group = $($admin.name)}} | select username,group
    | export-csv c:\Users_and_Groups.csv -Notypeinformation}}}
    Here is what I have in $myCol:
    PS C:\Users\Administrator> $myCol
    MarketingPSO
    RMSysAdmins
    I tried shortening up the one-liner a bit more, but for some reason the "RMSysAdmins" is the only Group listed even though Leia and Han are in the MarketingPSO Group:
    foreach($i in $myCol){get-adgroupmember $i | foreach {New-Object PSObject -Property @{ username = $_.name;Group = $($admin.name)}} | select username,group }
    username

    Hi Mr Mister,
    To get nested group members, this script is for your reference:
    function Get-ADNestedGroupMembers {
    [cmdletbinding()]
    param ( [String] $Group )
    Import-Module ActiveDirectory
    $Members = Get-ADGroupMember -Identity $Group|sort-object objectClass -descending
    $members | % {
    if($_.ObjectClass -eq "group") {
    Get-ADNestedGroupMembers -Group $_.samaccountname
    } else {
    New-Object PSObject -Property @{ username = $_.name;Group = $Group }}
    Get-ADNestedGroupMembers "groupname"
    If there is anything else regarding this issue, please feel free to post back.

  • Remove unwanted user, group and ID.

    Can this be posted as a user tip in my name? I am unable to post to user tips.
    After a recent aborted MacPorts install on OS X 10.5.8 I followed MacPorts uninstall instructions at:
    http://guide.macports.org/chunked/installing.macports.uninstalling.html
    The uninstall worked well except that I was left with a user called 'macports' with ID 503 which showed up when adding a user in Get Info or using AppleJack. I was not able to remove this user in System Preferences/Accounts nor add another user with the same name.
    I eventually discovered that this could be resolved by removing the following as root:
    /private/var/db/dslocal/nodes/Default/users/macports.plist
    /private/var/db/dslocal/nodes/Default/groups/macports.plist
    This has removed MacPorts and ID 503 from Get Info and AppleJack and I can now create a new user called MacPorts in System Preferences/Accounts despite the remaining historic entries in /private/var/db/dslocal/indices/Default/index.
    I assume this will work in non-MacPorts situations where the user cannot be removed in System Preferences/Accounts.
    This will probably work in all versions of Leopard and some later OSs.

  • What is the benefit of using clipping paths for a knock out?

    I found a posting saying they need someone to knock out the background of a lot of images using clipping paths. My question is, WHY use a clipping path? I know the rule of not using a selection tool such as the Magic Wand and then turning it into a clipping path and I know why that is. But if all is needed is for the background to be knocked out, why can't we just use the selection tool in the first place and just knock out the background from there? What is the benefit of that clipping mask?

    Usually the term Clipping Path refers to turning a path into a clipping path (in the paths panel) for use in older programs such as PageMaker that don't support transparency.
    For example if one wanted to import a file into PageMaker and only have a certain part of the document visible, one would make a path (or selection) around the object
    and turn the path (or selection) into a clipping path. Sorta the same results you see in photoshop using a layer mask or vector mask.
    Also clipping paths are used in certain printing workflows.
    Without seeing the posting it's hard to say what they meant and in photoshop 6 vector masks were labeled as Layer Clipping Paths not to be confused with real clipping paths.
    Old versions of photoshop also used the term Group With Previous to denote Create Clipping Mask.

  • Clipping Path info

    Hello guys,
    Again I am coming with a need for help now.
    I need a automation or plugin or script for spotting error on Photoshop paths.
    I tried photoshop scripts, searched for options in indesign and other softwares like pdf preflights. I couldn't find any idea.
    I will be working with lots of images more or less 100 images a day. I want to get the infos of clipping paths created in photoshop like path name, clipping flatness and open paths if any, all details in a log file or an log display window. Not an issue whether it works inside photoshop or outside like automation along with other softwares. But I simply need to spot the open path and clipping path name exactly.

  • Nested groups with Active Directory AWS

    Hi... am trying to target only specific groups from our AD, but I'd rather not have to use the partial users & groups sync as this would mean re-configuring the auth source for any new group that we want to bring in to the portal (v.5.0.2).
    I am able to target a specific part of AD in the following way:
    User Query Base : OU=Portal Users,DC=Domain1, DC=DOmain2
    User Query Filter: (&(objectclass=user)(memberOf=*))
    Group Query Base : OU=Portal Users,DC=Domain1, DC=DOmain2
    Group Query Filter: (objectclass=Group)
    This works fine, it brings in the groups in the "Portal Users" OU and any users in the OU who have group memberships. However, not all groups and users will exist in a single OU, so we decided to create a global group called "Portal Groups" and tried a similar query as above but with the query base replaced as follows:
    VN=Portal Groups,OU=Applications,DC=Domain1, DC=DOmain2
    This time... the group is brought in but no nested groups and no users! Has anyone else managed to accomplish an AWS setup of this sort or similar? I'm told that it is possible to sync in nested groups but being unfamiliar with AD I'm not sure if I've gone about it the right way.
    thanks in advance
    Simon Dragicevich

    Hi Simon,
    So let me make sure I've got your usecase.  You want to only create particular groups in the portal - you don't want all your AD groups in the portal.  You DO want all your users imported and to have them in the appropriate groups?
    If that's correct - you either want to play with your query bases, or you want to switch to a partial GROUP sync.  The former will allow you to automatically bring in new groups as they are added to AD, the later will not.
    One thing I was confused about in your original post - did you change both the user query base and the group query base to:
    VN=Portal Groups,OU=Applications,DC=Domain1, DC=DOmain2
    or just the group query base?  Assuming you did the former, that would explain why your users weren't imported.  If you did the later - that seems odd.  Regardless you don't want to create a global group, you want to create a new OU:
    OU=Portal Groups, OU=Applications, DC=Domain1, DC=Domain2
    Then set that as your group query base.  Assuming you have a bunch of groups scattered around your tree that you want in here, create shadow groups that essentially contain your other groups, e.g.:
    CN=GroupA, DC=Plumtree
    CN=GroupB, OU=Eng, DC=Plumtree
    I want both of those groups to be in my portal groups OU, so I create two new groups in my portal groups OU as follows:
    CN=GroupA, OU=Portal Groups, OU=Applications, DC=Domain1, DC=Domain2
    CN=GroupB, OU=Portal Groups, OU=Applications, DC=Domain1, DC=Domain2
    Both of these groups simply contain one member - the groups I am shadowing.  You can also more effectively deal with name clashing if you use this strategy.
    Make sense?

    You will typically see problems when multi-valued attributes are in the range of 10k-20k values. 10 values in a multi-valued attribute should not have much impact at all.

  • Finding bounds of nested clipping paths...

    This topic has been touched on before, muppet & sonic have pointed me in the right direction, but I'm stuck right now....
    Seeing as how "saveMultipleArtboards = false" is broken in CS4, and scripting any kind of epsSave results in the artboard size being the bounding box, I am trying to see if I can find out if the "visible to the eye" bounds of artwork exceed the artboard size.
    I can easily find non-clipped objects hanging outside the artboard by comparing the document's visible bounds to the artboard size.
    Likewise the "visible to the eye" bounds of clipped objects :
    var docRef = app.activeDocument;
    docRef.rulerOrigin = [0,0];
    ////Get size of artboard
    var myDocsizeArray = [0,0,docRef.width,docRef.height]
    ////Check for items on page
    if(docRef.pageItems.length != 0){
    /////Find out if top item is clipping mask
    if(docRef.pageItems[0].typename == "GroupItem"){
    if(docRef.pageItems[0].pathItems[0].clipping == true){
    ////Compare its bounds to doc bounds
    var myClipArray = docRef.pageItems[0].pathItems[0].visibleBounds
    if((myClipArray[1] >  myDocsizeArray[3]) || (myClipArray[2] >  myDocsizeArray[2]) || (myClipArray[0] < 0) || (myClipArray[3] < 0)){
    alert("Outside of artboard")
    However, this doesn't work if clipping paths are part of a nested groups. Is there a way to see if a clipping path's parent group is within bounds, or parent's parent group etc. is within bounds. I need to find the topmost clipping path that trumps all the others in any nested group.
    Is that what recursive functions are for? ,,,,,,,,,,,
    Something that can keep looking in a loop within itself?  Very instrospective!
    thx

                   bounds = grp.pageItems[i].visibleBounds;
              if (bounds.length > 0) {
                   outerBounds = maxBounds(outerBounds,bounds);
         return (outerBounds.length == 0) ? null : outerBounds;
    function maxBounds(ary1,ary2) {
         var res = [];
         if(ary1.length == 0)

              res[0] = Math.min(ary1[0],ary2[0]);
              res[1] = Math.max(ary1[1],ary2[1]);
              res[2] = Math.max(ary1[2],ary2[2]);
              res[3] = Math.min(ary1[3],ary2[3]);
         return res;
    function positionVisible(grp,x,y)
         var bounds = getRealVisibleBounds(grp);
         var newX = x + (grp.left - bounds[0]);
         var newY = y + (grp.top - bounds[1]);

  • Importing SVG with nested clip-path

    I'm having serious issues in Illustrator CS5 trying to import SVG files with nested clip-path properties.
    Illutrator seems to create unnecessary groups, and messes up with group parents, effectively screwing things up.
    Here is a minimal example :
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?><!DOCTYPE svg PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD SVG 1.1//EN" "http://www.w3.org/Graphics/SVG/1.1/DTD/svg11.dtd" [<!ENTITY ns_svg "http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><!ENTITY ns_xlink "http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">]>
    <svg version="1.1" id="main" overflow="visible" xmlns="&ns_svg;" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">
      <g id="piece-1">
        <g clip-path="url(#cpform)" id="form1">
          <g clip-path="url(#cplogo)" id="logo1">
                        <rect fill="#FF0000" x="10" y="10" width="1000" height="1000" />
          </g>
        </g>
      </g>
      <g transform="matrix(1,0,0,1,200,0)" id="piece-2">
        <g clip-path="url(#cpform)" id="form2">
          <g clip-path="url(#cplogo)" id="logo2">
                        <rect fill="#FF0000" x="10" y="10" width="1000" height="1000" />
          </g>
        </g>
      </g>
      <clipPath id="cpform">
              <rect x="0" y="0" width="150" height="150">
              </rect>
      </clipPath>
      <clipPath id="cplogo">
              <rect x="0" y="0" width="100" height="100">
              </rect>
      </clipPath>
    </svg>
    Such a valid SVG file displays fine in Chrome, IE, Opera, Firefox, but Illustrator fails loading it properly, because it creates two groups between "main" and "piece-1" (which is in itself not too bad), and sets piece-1 as a brother of another unnecesarry group from which piece-2 will descend. piece-2 and piece-1 are then clipped with piece-1 clip-path, which is just plain wrong and screws display.
    Note that you can move piece-2 to the root of the document, which restores the display. But save this fixed file, and open it again : it"s back to its broken state.
    Does anoyone know if this is fixed in CS6 ? If there is a workaround ?

    AI doesn't care for the original structure of an SVG. It will merely try to retain the appearance based on its own internal logic, which of course matches how you would create a normal AI file. So no, you can't probably avoid it.

  • Trouble with clipping paths and expanding

    Hey y'all. Okay, so I have a Illustrator element that uses a clipping path.
    Even after I run "Expand Appearance" on it, it's not trimming the art to the bounds of the path.
    It's making for difficult to position correctly when copying into Photoshop as a Smart Vector or Shape Layer:
    And it isn't correct in After Effects either.

    What you are describing is just another example of the very common need to trim artwork (including filled, unfilled, open, and/or closed paths) without wrecking its already-applied Attributes, Appearances.
    As has been discussed many many times here, Illustrator simply does not provide that basic functionality...neither by its horribly-designed cutting tools nor through its problematic and caveat-riddled Pathfinders. Expanding a Clipping Path doesn't serve as a workaround for this long-missing functionality; nor does flattening transparency. You can't do it without resorting to the workarounds you've already tried or others that will no doubt be suggested.
    Once again:
    NONE of Illustrator's cutting tools (Knife, Scissor) can cut across artwork that includes multiple open, unfilled paths. Open unfilled paths are ignored by the Knife cut. The Scissor cannot cut across multiple paths at once.
    Illustrator's recently-added, very poorly implemented Eraser tool comes nearest to the needed functionality. It can at least cut multiple unfilled open paths without their becoming converted to unstroked, closed fills. But it unpredictably alters the shapes of remaining portions and has no means by which to accurately control a cutting shape other than rectangular.
    This is a prime example (there are others) of how Illustrator confuses and clutters the interface with multiple under-powered tools designed for similar functions, none of which measure up to a single tool properly designed for the same purposes in most other programs.
    Pathfinders are riddled with ridiculous caveats. Those which come close to providing the needed functionality are incapable of ommitting the unwanted deadwood and/or wreck strokes by outlining them.
    Illustrator needs a feature that allows any given path to be employed as either a selection marquee or a cutting path. And the cutting operation needs to act as expected regarding strokes as well as fills--as common in any other drawing program that does provide the long-missing functionality (most do; Illustator never has).

  • Getting a list of users and permission from a folder including nested groups

    $project_folder = "\\servername\foldername\foldername1"
    Get-Acl $project_folder |
        ForEach-Object {
            $_.Access | Add-Member -MemberType NoteProperty -Name Path -Value $_.Path -PassThru
        } |
        ft -GroupBy Path -Property IdentityReference, AccessControlType, FileSystemRights > foldertst.csv
    The above command gives me a list of all the users who have access to foldername1. (including users and groups).
    How do i modify this code to get the information of the nested groups for this folder

    Sorry, I won't be providing a complete solution, just a few suggestions and comments.
    first thing will be to determine for each ACE (access control entry) whether the IdentityReference refers to a user account or a group. If a group, you will then need to process each of its members, each of which will share the FileSystemRights of the current
    ACE.
    But... if any of the members are other groups, you will need to process them recursively as well. Recursively.
    There are a few gotcha's, though:
    you need to recognize and avoid infinite recursion when, for example, group A is a member of group B which is a member of group A. One way to do this is to keep a list of all groups encountered, processing each only once.
    if one ACE belongs to group C, another belongs to group D, group A is a member of C, and group B is a member of D, you must ensure that all members of A and B are listed with ACE C and ACE D.
    Once you have identified all user accounts you might find that some have multiple records. For example, user AA might belong to group A, and get unlimited access through the ACE owned by group C, but deny read access through the ACE owned by group D. If
    the first mention of this user in your output shows he has unlimited access, that will, of course be incorrect. at the very least the output should be sorted by username. You could attempt to amalgamate all of his various accesses (like the effective permissions
    tab) into a single one. But it would be difficult to show which group memberships contributed which aspects of his access permissions in any kind of simple or intuitive way.
    security configurations can easily become overly complex. The best solution is to simplify and standardize how permissions are applied and how groups are nested. I have had to do this on occasion, and the problem of determining how things should be permitted
    from how they actually are is probably the most complicated part of the job.
    good luck.
