Unwanted shared computer - how to ignore for good

I have a "Shared" device on my network that seems to have cropped up. It is another PC that is on my network that I do not want to share with. I can't connect to it, nor ignore it. It shows even when it is shut down and disconnected. How do I get rid of it without shutting down WiFi and restarting? How do I stop it re-appearing everytime I use that other computer on the network?

Hi winkyinbc,
If you are okay hiding all of the shared servers on your network you can not show them on the desktop or sidebar with the Finder Preferences.
OS X Yosemite: Finder preferences
General
Show these items on the desktop
Select any items you want to see on the desktop.
Sidebar
Show these items in the sidebar
Select the items you want to see in the Finder sidebar.
These items also appear in Open and Save dialogs.
Note you want to deselect "Connected servers" and if the PC is being shared with Bonjour, uncheck "Bonjour computers".
Take care,
Nubz

  • On a shared computer how do I get the userid to not be saved in the logon for mail.

When I log onto my yahoo or google mailbox - the userid is saved. I don't want that to happen as it is a shared computer. It doesn't save passwords, just the user id.

I cleared out all the cookies and changed my parameter to delete cookies when I closed Firefox. I then closed my browser and reopened it...logon or userid was still there. Thank you for your reply though.
I tried earlier to use privacy browsing and when I did I wasn't able to log into my google mailbox at all.

  • Unwanted Shared computer

    Hi,
I've just installed Snow Leopard and I now have a Shared computer coming up in my Finder window. If I click on it, it tries to connect, then says, 'Connection failed'.
I have not linked up with any other networks or computers as far as I am aware. However, I also added a Mac Book for back up and I think I may have turned on Airport when installing (I'm not quite sure why).
Should I be worried about this computer coming up? I've turned Airport off now but it's still in my Finder window.
    Thanks in advance

    Hello m:
I never paid any attention to that area before. I have two items in the shared section (both are web addresses). Neither make any sense and they cannot be removed (see article):
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8731.html
They are not connected to anything. I am ignoring them and you probably should do the same thing. I have no clue why the guidance indicates they cannot be removed.

This sounds like something having to do with Home Sharing rather than iTunes Match. Nothing will be downloaded from the cloud unless you specifically click the button.
There is a setting in the Home Sharing settings of iTunes that will copy music from one computer to another when ever iTunes is opened on both computers at the same time. I don't have multiple computers so I don't remember exactly where that setting is, but this KB article should be helpful <http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3819>. If the page doesn't load the first time just reload it.

  • Deleted songs being recopied - how to delete for good?

Since signing up for iTunes Match, I have a problem with music being copied to my 'main' Mac without being asked.
Scenario is that I bought a load of songs on his MacBook so that my partner could listen to them separately.  I don't want them in my main collection.  After I bought them, my iMac started downloading the songs.  I let them complete, and then deleted them, but didn't delete them from iCloud.  That way, I thought, my partner can have them on his iPhone but I don't have to have them taking up space on my main machine.
Whenever I delete them, within the next 24 hours they get downloaded again - the status bar on iTunes says "Copying".  I delete them from the library, making sure not to delete them from iCloud, and the next day... they are back again.
On my iMac I have Automatic Downloads turned off for all content, and no tick next to "Always check for available downloads."  I don't have enough room on my iMac for all my content, so I would have thought this was ideal for iCloud - leave the songs in the cloud to get downloaded onto devices where they're wanted and don't have them taking up space where they're not wanted.  I just wish they would go away...

  • Comments in Adobe Acrobat:  How to remove for good!

Frustrated: I've tried deleting a comment I made by mistake in my acrobat document. Using the typewriter tool.  I delete the comment and save the document, but it appears all expanded and the next time I open up the form.  This is a form that others have to use - and they dont need or like the comment section popping up every time they open it.
How do I remove this comment once and for all.  I've been spending way too much time on something that's probably simple.  I read to go into document/examine and delete it there - tried that - it doesn't work.
    Nothing so far works.
Like I said, when I click on the comment I get the typewriter field that I created.  I delete it, and it tells me my comment is deleted - till I open up the document again.
    Thanks ahead.
    Dan

Sorry for the late response - I was expecting an email and never got one.
I've tried a thousand ways now to try deleting this comment. I've tried the
navigation panel to delete the comment panel that pops up every time someone opens this panel.
I also tried the examine document dialog box to do it - still it reappears
Anyway, I tried clicking on the comment icon in the nav panel and deleting the comment, then saving it, still the comment appears the next time I open the document.
I try removing the field (typewriter tool) that created the comment in the first place, then save, and both the comment and the field appear the next time I open the document. I inadvertantly created this comment, I should be able to delete it. I am posting the document here.
Could someone take a look at it?
    Please advise.

  • How to delete for good

When I delete photos and email are they totally gone or hiding somewhere in the back ground? If they are hiding how do i get ride of them?

Depending on the type of email account you have, if you delete an email from the iPhone it will also delete it from the email account. GMail does this, as well as Yahoo!. Most IMAP type accounts will do this as well.

  • Backing up from time machine on a shared computer - how to back up only one user

I backed up my old macbook to an external hard drive using time machine, then I sold my laptop. my husband and I both had the same laptop, and we don't need two! I made my own account on his laptop, but now how do I load the backup on my hard drive onto ONLY my account, without changing his settings? please tell me there is a way to do this, and that I didn't just lose everything!!!

Best source of the details of how to do the non-straight forward Time Machine moves is the Pondini Tip page and especially the full Pondini site referenced in the Tips age.

  • Unwanted "Shared" computer in my Finder?

Ok, I opened my Finder, and to my surprise I see this there.
I don't know what it is and it's scaring me.  I wouldn't say that I'm Mac stupid, since I've had 3 Macs, but I really don't mess with this kind of stuff on it, so I don't know what this is.
Is it harmful? What does it mean?  How do I get rid of it?

Alright so I see other people asked the same thing.  I do have a wireless router, but it is password protected.  The only other device possibly using it right now is my iPod touch.  Is that what this is? If so, why is it this weird name?

  • Formatted hard drive and changed computer, how can I sync with iTunes?

Yes, I formatted my hard drive and got a new computer, without thinking that it would cause any problems. Now I have installed iTunes and want to sync my iPhone, but it wants to erase my current music files. What do I do?
P.s. If there are any ppl who have contact with developers, a little proposition... perhaps develop a shared computer version of iTunes (for work-home commuting, internet cafes ect.) where a person can log-in manipulate and download onto their iPod/Phone ect. without this problem of being fixed to one computer (which to be honest is rather unrealistic? no?)

found life saveing program called media widget well worth the $29 if you have alot of stuff on tour ipod

  • I have a Macbook Pro 15" that is three and a half years old.  Although it has slowed a bit, it still runs well and runs every program I need. Any tips for how to keep this old computer running well and in good health?

I have a Macbook Pro 15" that is three and a half years old.  Although it has slowed a bit, it still runs well and runs every program I need. Any tips for how to keep this old computer running well and in good health?
I have a 250 gig drive and try to keep at least 100 gigs unused at all times, 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM memory, back up with Time Machine and CrashPlan, and have OS X 10.7.3.
This was my first Mac since an old Apple II GS.  After that I used PC's and got really good at reformatting, replacing drives, reinstalling, defragging, resolving software conflicts, etc.  Since switching back to Macs (five in my extended family now), I haven't had to do any of those things. So, although, the cost is three times as much, the aggrevation has been ten times less.
I'm retired and living on a fixed income and would therefore like to keep this computer running as opposed to constatntly upgrading.
    That said, any tips?
    Thanks
It does have a crack on the left of the screen case about 3/4'' up from the bottom.  I've posted that as another question.

Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility.  For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. Drive Genius provides additional tools not found in Disk Warrior.  Versions 1.5.1 and later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    SuperDuper!
    SyncTwoFolders
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.
Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Adding more RAM, if feasible, and a new, faster hard drive may also help pep it up a little.

  • How do I access iTunes on a shared computer?

My computer died, I am using a shared computer and the other user already has iTunes under his own account.  Is there any way to access my iTunes account on this computer without doing anything to his iTunes?

yes it is. its all linked. dont you see?
how do i get itunes on a different computer? is the title of the thread.
i have the same problem. the computer one of our itunes was on broke. it was replaced. apple dont cater for this. you can only link an apple device to one itunes. so if the computer is replaced, you are stuffed!!
i installed another itunes on another computer and the original ipod wont sync with it or allow itunes to download the latest ipod operating system.
the easiest thing to do would be to buy a new ipod (clear of content) and a new pc. install itunes on the pc, create a new apple ID and voila - can then start to put music and apps back on ipod and have the lastest and greatest OS.
expensive i admit, but surely far less painful then any alternative?

  • How do you delete contacts from your phone for good without having it appear in the messages app?

How do you delete contacts from your phone for good without having it appear in the messages app?

    Hi tieyce,
You need to hook up your iPhone, select it under Devices, and then go to the Photos tab on the Device Profile, and uncheck Sync Photos, then sync. That should delete all photos that were downloaded from your computer.
When you say you have 2 separate albums of the same sets of pictures, what 2 albums are you referring to? Can you provide us with names of those "duplicate" albums?
    Cheers,

  • My password pops up everytime I go to enter my email for logging in to a website. This is a shared computer and regardless of that, I don't want my password appearing, unencrypted.

I accidentally typed my email AND password in the email box when logging on to a website. Now my password pops up everytime I go to enter my email for this website. This is a shared computer and regardless of that, I don't want my password appearing, unencrypted. I have cleared the cache, deleted cookies, cleared history, shut down and restarted the computer. How do I keep this from automatically appearing please?

Hmmm, Norton extensions are broken again in Firefox 4.0.1. It seems that Norton didn't allow for Firefox 4.0 security updates when they updated their Firefox extension for Firefox 4.0. Norton says they'll have a fix in two weeks. A Norton user posted a fix in this forum thread.
