Unwanted Sites Opening in Firefox

You have to do something about unwanted web sites opening and shouting promotional stuff at us . . . or i will be dropping Firefox after using it for 10 years. And a lot of esoteric instructions won't cut it . . . it just needs a blocking option like Spamfighter in an email program.

In case of malware, there is nothing to deal with Firefox. Because the main reason behind this is when we install softwares, we occasionally install some third party malicious software. They are likely to create this kind of stuff. So here is some fix you can try:
# Go to the firefox menu ≡ > addons > extensions & remove any suspicious entries (toolbars, things that you have not installed intentionally, don't know what purpose they serve, etc).
# Also go to the windows control panel / programs and remove all toolbars or potentially unwanted software from there.
# Run a full scan of your system with different security tools like the free version of malwarebytes & adwcleaner, which are specialised in adware and browser hijackers.

  • Unwanted tabs open on Firefox start-up

A friend gets the same additional tabs to his home page every time he starts Firefox. I have re-installed Firefox for him, I have checked that there are not multiple home pages set, and I have followed the instructions for removing sessionstore.js. However, although I have successfully located the Firefox profiles and openned *****.default, the file sessionstore.js does not appear to be there. Show hidden files, system files etc are all checked in the explorer options. (I have tried this on my own machine and have successfully located the file). I should be grateful for any suggestions - it is driving me mad! Michael

In that case do a malware check with a few malware scan programs.
You need to use all programs because each detects different malware.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of the database.

  • How do I stop Firefox from opening unwanted sites or (inescapable) dialogs

My Firefox, as soon as I open a web page opens either (1) an overlying dialog typically flashing saying I am the 1000000th person or my computer is slow or buy this or (2) another unwanted site in another tab typically trying to sell something. Cases of type (2) are annoying but at least the tab can be deleted but cases of type (1) prevent me from using Firefox at all because the dialog does not have an exit button so I have to stop Firefox to get rid of it. This problem only happens with Firefox - IE never has these problems. I have scanned for malware using 3 different programs and I have tried deleting Firefox and re-installing it (keeping my profile) but the problem is still there. If I knew what the process was I could at least delete the process.
I love my Firefox - please help!

You can check for recently installed suspicious or unknown extensions.
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

Firefox is adding advertising links to certain words on my website cornish-surfing.co.uk, and when I open a new tab an additional window opens with unwanted sites.
    1. How can I stop these things from happening?
    2. Why is it happening?
These things only happen when I’m using the Firefox browser. I use Sophos antivirus and firewall and the scans indicate my system is clean. So I’m assuming that it’s built into Firefox or there’s a security flaw with Firefox.
Can you let me know which and how I can stop it from happening?

hello, this sounds like a problem possibly caused by adware on your pc (certainly nothing that is shipping with a plain official firefox build).
please go to ''firefox > addons > extensions'' & remove any suspicious entries (toolbars, things that you have not installed intentionally, don't know what purpose they serve, etc). also go to the windows control panel / programs and remove all toolbars or potentially unwanted software from there and run a full scan of your system with the security software that you have in place and different other tools like the [http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free free version of malwarebytes] & [http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/ adwcleaner].

  • Firefox doesn't ask if I want to save sites when I close it and allways comes up the same three unwanted sites when I open it again.

It used to re-boot with the tabs and sites I had asked it to save when I closed down last. Now when I close it doesn't ask if I want to 'save tabs'. And it re-boots with the same three sites which I must have saved once months ago, without asking. I've tried deleting the unwanted sites from 'history' but it still somehow finds them. Not a big deal, but irritating, so if someone can help, I'd like to be able to fix it - Robinmarriage

I couldn't find a way to resolve the problem through firefox. The saving or not saving passwords with or without asking was ridiculous. However, I did find a solution, a firefox add on called Last Pass. I've been using it now for a couple of weeks and love it. I only have to enter the main password for my Last Pass acct and from there any site I go to Last Pass captures my info, then asks if I want it saved. Give it a try it's really easy and does what it is supposed to do. It even gave me the option of disconnecting firefox's not so reliable password mgr.

  • It takes firefox a long time to open on my laptop, other sites open fast, any clue?

Firefox is my default browser and it opens very slow now, other sites open normal.By slow I mean 10 seconds respons time, before this was 2 seconds.

I have exact sample slowness problem. It takes at least over 15 seconds for Firefox to open. The blue circle just turning and (NOT RESPONING) in the Firefox title bar.
After closing Firefox, I cannot re-start any Firefox for next 30 seconds (just responsed previous Firefox not closed dialog box).
I have only one enabled add-on and no other plug-in.
My system Windows 7 Ultimate, 64 bits systems.
    Add-on enabled Shockwave Flash 11.01.152
    Firefox 7.0.1 installed 10/21/2011
System hardware: Intel DualCore 3.06GHz, Memory 2GB. Harddrive 1.5TB (90% unused)
On my computer, Chrome is the fastest (almost immediate), Opera takes around 5 to 7 seconds, Internet Explorer 9 takes at least 10 to 12 seconds. So, Firefox used to be the fastest and now the slowest.

  • When I click on an Icon on my desktop to take me to a site (such as google) I get a message that it could not find the loaction. Then it goes ahead and opens a Firefox window with the site anyway as if the message never happened.

When I click on an Icon on my desktop to take me to a site (such as Google) I get a message that it could not find the location. Then it goes ahead and opens a Firefox window with the site anyway as if the message never happened. Then when I close the window I see that the message is still there. I have to close it separately. Any suggestions? Oh, and this only happens if Firefox is NOT already active. If I have another Firefox window open when I click on the Icon, it just opens as expected. This message appears no matter which site Icon I select. It did not happen before I upgraded to ver 9.0.

    Hello BassoonPlayer,
Since you are using one of the the school's Macbooks, it is quite possible that the time and date are not properly set on the computer that you are using.  FaceTime will not work if you do not have the proper time zone set up for the location that you are in.  This past week, there were a two other Macbook users I've helped by simply telling them to set the Date/Time properly.  By the way, you described your problem very well, which makes it easier for us to help you.  Hope this solves your problem -- if not, post back and I can suggest other remedies.

Go to settings on your iPad select store and look to the bottom of the screen - ensure it is your apple id shown as being logged on - if it not yours click on the apple id choose log out and then enter your details and password.
If someone has entered their apple id on your ipad and automatic downloads are enabled you can be receiving apps they have purchased.

  • I just started getting a new window opening upon each fresh opening of Firefox even though I closed it on the last shutdown and each time the website that opens is different.

I usually leave several tabs and 1-3 windows open on shut down of Firefox so that I can have access to those sites when I restart Firefox. Recently I started getting an extra window opening when I start up with a website opening that I've never been to or am aware of. Each time I close that window out but it returns the next time with a different website usually trying to sell me something. Please help me get rid of this annoying encroachment.
    Thanks,

    Hi luckygriffen-
If you are getting repeated unwanted windows opening with advertisements on them, it is likely you have some malware installed. This Support article will help you identify and resolve malware issues:

    * If the menu bar is hidden then press and hold the Alt key down, that should make the Menu bar appear (Firefox 3.6 on Windows) (see [[Menu bar is missing]]).
    * Make sure that you have the ''Navigation Toolbar'' and other toolbars visible: View > Toolbars .
    * If items are missing then see if you can find them in the View > Toolbars > Customize window.
