Unwanted spaces in cross references.

Im getting an extra space just after the opening quote in some cross references in FM10 Structured document. This causes the cross reference to wrap around incorrectly and also looks bad. The space does not appear in the definition, in fact majority of cross references using this particular deifnition do not show with the extra space. It only shows in a number of cross references.
Also, there is no space in the source heading. There is an Index marker right at the beginning of the source heading but moving it does not make a difference. Also when I try deleting the first few characters from the source, the cross reference updates but the extra space still shows. Any ideas what could be wrong? I haven't got much experience with structured frame.

funny... this doesn't happen on a windows install...

  • Cross references invisible space causing unwanted wrapping

I have a document where I have created an index of meticulously mapped the page numbers using cross references. However I have a massive problem where the cross references take up WAY more space than they should.
Have a look at the following screen shot:
Notice how the numbers could easily fit on one line, however they start wrapping way before they come in contact with the other side of the text frame.
This is very frustrating!!! Can anybody tell me why this is happening and how I can fix it?
    Thanks.

    No, and yes.
No, I have no idea why the normal paragraph composer does this. I've reported it as a bug in the past.
Yes, if you switch to the World-Ready Composer, the bug goes away - the WRC doesn't have this bug. Seems like the normal paragraph composer thinks of the variable as longer than it really is, while the WRC doesn't have this problem.

  • Creating a "space" for insertables characters in cross references

Is it possible to create a cross reference that has a "space" where text can be inserted later? I am thinking of a reference like "see No. __ in Fig.42 on page 8-3" with __ being the space where the number from the image can be inserted. My idea for a cross reference would be like this:
see No. <$inputChar><$inputChar> in Fig. <$AbsNumExkl> on page <$chapnum>-<$SeiteNum>. The tag <$inputChar> being a space for an insertable character. Is such a  thing possible in FrameMaker or is there even a default tag in FrameMaker for such a "space"? I haven't a clue what I should be looking for to find a solution, hence posting my question here.
Any help or ideas would be very mucha ppreciated!
    Thanks

    Hi Matt,
and thanks first of all for your reply. Indeed I am looking to "call up" a call reference in an image. I have a document where the images have call-outs IN the images (bitmaps). I have only just now started to use FrameMAker 11 and  i just stumbled across the Hottspot feature (I am not sure when the Hotspot feature was included) and will delve into that sometime when I have the time.. (harhar), hoping I migt find a work around to meet my needs with that.
Anyhow - for now, my prob is that I wish to make a reference to a call-out number in an image.
The cross refernce is (e.g.) "see No. __, Fig. 42, Page 87".
The Xref I CAN refer to without problem naturally is "Fig. 42, Page 87", but as you can see, I had hoped to be able to "be lazy" and have FM automatically also put down "see No." for me but leaving some space, where it is possible to insert text, meaning to leave a blank of some sorts in the "code" of the cross reference. Theoretically the Xref would be interrupted where text could be inserted (in the example fill in the "__" in my example).
Does makle that a little clearer?
As I had to meet my deadline I did put down my very own individual "No. XYZ" each time before setting the cross reference but it is far from ideal.
On the whole, I find working with images with call-outs is tedious in FrameMaker.- I would absoloutely LOVE a feature where it would be possible to work on different layers.
I have a few ideas I would like to try out and fiddle around with to find a solution for my problem. Unfortunately I am not properly trained on FM itself, I have been through all other DTP tools starting with Quark and PageMaker, Indesign etc. I am HTML-savvy, dabbled with Javascript, php and some XML, but the structured Framemaker is still only an untouched yet intriguing concept.
If any more ideas come your way, or if you have any recommendations for my to may be find work arounds let me know!
    Thanks

  • Unwanted space before the footnote reference

In my document, which has hundreds of footnotes, in some places, in the text, before the superscripted numbers that are the references to the footnotes there is an unwanted space. How can get rid of the spaces in one step? If it's with Find/Change - how do I do this? If not, how is this done?

    find-change grep
    find:   \s(?=~F)
    change: leave empty

  • Can I change a cross reference display without having to recreate it?

WHen cross references are to figures on the same page, I let the cross reference point to the paragraph number only ("see View 25"). When it is on another page, I use paragraph number and page ("See View 25 on page 34"). But when my text changes, sometimes text moves, sometimes images move and I need to change the cross reference. It is quite bothersome, I have to rmeove the old one and create a new one, hunting for the cross reference in a list of 150 or so.
Is there a simpler way? E.g. put the insertion point in the cross reference and than some easy way to select a different appearance?

Thanks for stepping in, Jan. I'm glad the smart page-reference building blocks in Cross-References Pro can actually do what I hoped it could, to solve this riddle for the original poster. I did a quick test, just to be sure it worked as I expected, and it does! It would be great for Adobe to license your technology and build this into InDesign, along with the rest of the extra-strength cross-reference abilities. (Disclaimer: I'm not connected to DTP Tools other than being a happy user.)
As to the unwanted space, perhaps a character style in nested and/or GREP style could apply some kind of width adjustment that would reduce the displacement to an absolute minimum.

Hi, sorry for being a little late on this one. Here's a sample of the Cross-Reference PRO format you're looking for is:
    See Figure <paranum/> <pagenum usesectionname="true" forcearabic="true" usepage="true" pagetext="on page #" usethis="true" thistext=" " usenext="true" nexttext="on the next page" useprev="true" prevtext="on the previous page" useopposite="true" oppositetext="on the opposite page"/>
The trick is that you include the words "on" and "on the" in the page wording definitions, but insert just emptu space for the This Page setting. There's a glitch that you end up with an extra space after the reference, but you can replace the normal space by a hair space (code ^| ) which makes it quite tolerable.

  • Cross Reference, Paragraph Style conflict?

I'm created an epub file and have a cross reference for one of my chapter titles. When I export it to ADE the final product has the cross reference in the file but the paragraph style for the text that I linked lost all of it's styling somehow. The paragraph style is supposed to be centered and have space after it but it is completely gone but the code is still in the xhtml file.
I have opened the xhtml file and cannot see where the issue is. Has anyone else had this problem exporting from CS4? If so, how do you fix it?
    Thank you so much!

According to the FM7 Help, the variables for background text frame use might be:
    <$paranumonly[paratag]>
to pick up the first instance on a page, and
    <$paranumonly[+,paratag]>
    to pick up the last.
The "+," bit is the key. I've never tried it myself.
This presumably also assumes that the paras of interest all have the same format name.

  • Cross reference help needed

    Here is the situation:
I create automatic figure number in my document. That is working fine.
In my text, when I want to cross reference the figure (i.e. "FIGURE 3-3"), I click in the location in the text and use "Type"... "Interactive"... "Insert cross reference"...
    That all works fine.
The problem I am having is when I move or copy that page to another document wherr, for example it was "fig 3-3" in the original it is "fig 3-19" in the new (pasted into document). The figure auto numbering updates ok for the new document, but in the body text it remains what it was from the original .. that is, the new auto number will update "fig 3-19", but in the text it remains "fig 3-3". It seem to retain the cross reference to the original, and not "follow" or remain with the new.
So is there a fix for this. or is there another way to do this?
    Thanks for reading my questions.

You may have to share your XML (partial data is fine too). You should also share the code for <?for-each-group@column:...?>.
Most of the time this mismatch happens when there are some empty data fields. In such cases you may have to add a condition using xpath to populate the data, where in if there is an empty tag or no tag, it puts a zero value or space there.

  • How do I cross-reference photo folders?

My photos are organized in folders according to the week they were taken, and I want to keep it that way. But if I want to pull up just the photos that have my friend Brian in them, how can I do that?
First off iPhoto is NOT an option. I have used several versions of the iLife suite starting with Tiger, then moving on to Leopard and (currently) Snow Leopard. And the whole iLife suite is riddled with bugs to the point where I do not want to touch them as they are completely unreliable. DVD player crashes and freezes randomly, and falsely claims DVDs are damaged when they are brand new. Now I just use VLC, and my DVD movies play perfectly every time. Something I could almost never get DVD Player to do. I have tried using iWeb, but after a few "undos" and some editing, my links no longer work, and files get dropped for no reason.
I have tried tagging photos in iPhoto, and using one Smart Folder for each tagged category. It all works great for a while, but before long, newly tagged photos stop being added into the Smart Folders, and it defeats the whole purpose.
Not to mention that iPhoto creates a huge file, and wastes time identifying faces, which is an undesirable feature I can't seem to turn off.
I am guessing the whole problem with the iLife suit is that the library coding gets super easily corrupted if you make changes (and I am not even touching any of the files outside of iPhoto, iWeb, etc.)
I can't even make aliases to the folders and organize them that way for viewing in screensaver, because Snow Leopard's screen saver can't open the photos in an alias folder.
I'm NOT going to duplicate all my folders with different names and arrange them by category. That isn't organizing, that is duplicating, and completely wasting tons of file space.
Is there any program available I can get to replace iPhoto so I can cross-reference my photos into multiple categories? And is there a screen saver program I can use to make my own screen savers that can pull files from aliases, or some other referencing system?
Is there a patch I can get so that the default screensaver will open photos from an alias in Snow Leopard, the way it always used to? Why is it so difficult to deal with what should be simple, basic programs and file organization?
I love my MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard, and I love the professional programs I run on it such as Adobe and Maya, but why is the first party software complete garbage?
I know I don't sound like it at the moment, but I'm normally a polite person, I am just really frustrated right now. Just tired of banging my head trying to find ways to get around and outsmart the default programs on this OS, which has been futile, I might add.

I am so terribly glad you haven't come across the bugs I have because let me tell you they are terribly frustrating. I only wish I had made them up. There is nothing I like better than ranting without any justification whatsoever.
Okay enough of that. I really have come across these problems, and even though I may not have been too polite I don't need to be accused of falsification and stupidity thankyouverymuch.
If you had read my post you would have understood that choosing a folder is one of the many things I have tried to do that didn't work. The only folders that work have the actual files in them. And since I am trying to organize my photos into groups it does not make sense to duplicate folders of photos simply to  make them work. That takes up too much space.
Instead what I am trying to do is to not duplicate anything, but find a way to have my photos organized into groups.
Further if iLife has not presented any problems for you, you must be a very casual user indeed. These programs do not provide the depth of use that advanced users like myself require. You can go back to selling shoddy products for Apple now.
Is it possible for people to respond with HELP instead of criticism?

  • Indesign CS6 Very slow - cross-references?

    Dear All,
I have been struggeling with this for over 2 days now..
I've treid the following solutions on the Adobe website
    http://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/kb/slow-performance-indesign-cs5.html
    and http://indesignsecrets.com/why-is-indesign-soooo-slow.php
It does not seem to work.
My document is around 40 pages, with some images (around 20), but it has a lot of cross references to a table in the same document.
I have untreaded a lot of information. Currently only 10 pages maximum is threaded.
My pc has 8 gb ram, 2.5 Ghz and around 40 GB free HD space.
I think it might be my cross references, but I don't know how to fix it..
I don't want it to be removed out of the table (because i need my references sorted on alhabatical order).
    Hope you guys can help
    Thanks,
    Daan

@Daan – I do not much with cross references, but several users here and in other forums report performance issues when working with cross references.
There is a 3rd party solution by DTP Tools:

  • InDesign CS6 Cross references

I need to place a non-breaking space between the word Figure and the number x, so they do not end up on two separate lines at the edge of a fully justified column, but I cannot construct the right code to apply in the <paraNum/> “building block”. Normally, I would use ctrl-alt-x in running text, but in the cross reference function, even using the special character feature, I am unable to find the correct solution. I'm sure it has something to do with delimiters and true or false, but how do I define this? Can anyone help, please?

    So …

  • How do I exclude one cross reference format?

Version: TCS2: Framemaker 9, Robohelp 8, both fully patched.
I have a gazillion cross-references to figures (images) in my Framemaker manual. Due to executive decision, these images are not being ported over to Robohelp-- I set their paragraph style to not import at all.
However, I cannot figure out for the life of me how to get Robohelp to IGNORE the cross-references of the type called "Figure." For that matter, I can't get Robohelp to give those a style, like "Hidden" that I could then use CSS to hide.
How do I get Robohelp to excluse/not import all cross-references of a specific format?

An alternate approach might be to create a new FM template that has those cross-references re-defined to nothing (i.e. no content except for a thin-space character - FM needs something there, but a thin space shouldn't be hardly noticeable). Then have this template applied when importing the FM content into RH. This would effectively not show those cross-refs.

  • Removing some chapters and cross-reference formats in the conversion

    Hi everyone!
I am using Frame and RH to single source creating PDFs and online help. I create the PDFs from FrameMaker, and Webhelp from RH. I use the RH linking functionality.
Is there any way to exclude some FM chapters from being converted, without using the Exclude option in FM, and instead using an option available in RH?
Also, is there a way to exclude certain cross-reference formats from being converted at all? I don't want to convert them to Paratext, I just want them to not appear in online help output at all (things like "procedure 1-1").
    Thanks.
    Sue

I think the only ways to exclude stuff would be to use the Exclude option in FM (as you mention - I've never tried it with RH) or to create a different book that only has the chapters you want to bring over to RH. I do something like that when I do my printed PDFs - I create a "Print-Only" book in which I go through and set the page numbering and conditional text expressions.
To exclude the cross-ref format, I've seen a hint that says to just put a space overtop of the style in the Conversion Settings. It still comes over, but just as a blank space.

  • Appearance of Cross-Reference

I posted this a while back in the InDesign forum, but no responses, so thought I'd post it in InDesign Scripting to see if anyone here knows the answer . . .
I'm using InDesign CS4 and have various cross-reference formats. ALL of the cross-reference formats should have an Appearance setting of Invisible Rectangle. Once I change this setting in the New Cross-Reference dialog, sometimes it sticks and sometimes it doesn't.
Is it possible to make Invisible Rectangle a permanent part of the saved cross-reference format?

Caption labels are stored in the Normal template. You will have to recreate the label (via the Caption dialog box). Make sure it matches the one you have been using earlier.
Note that captions including spaces and/or punctuation may give unpredictable results. Avoid these characters if possible. You can add them manually, after you have inserted a caption.

  • Cross Reference Source text options

Creating a Cross Reference linking to a Paragraph. In the paragraph where the cross-reference source is inserted, may the cross-reference link be applied to existing text in that paragraph so that the cross-reference destination text does not appear? Text anchors can be created to accomplish this, but that is an extra step (I can create a cross reference linking to a paragraph all in one dialog box). Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

    Hi, Seir:
I agree that it's confusing. Here's how I do it:
To create a text anchor at the insertion point location:
    * Open the Hyperlinks/Cross-References panel's menu (also called "flyout menu." It's the small icon at the upper-right of the panel, below the double-arrow (>>) icon that collapses the panel.
    * Choose New Hyperlink Destination. THIS SHOULD BE NAMED NEW TEXT ANCHOR!!!
    * Choose Type: Text Anchor
    * Name the anchor as you like Click OK.
To create a cross-reference to a text anchor:
    * Place the insertion point where you want it.
    * Click the Create new Cross-Reference button on the bottom of the Hyperlinks/Cross-Reference panel.
    * Choose Link To: Text Anchor
    * Choose the target document
    * Choose the text anchor
    * Choose the Cross-Reference format
    * Choose Appearance properties
    * Click OK
I'm not sure what could cause the straight/curly quotes problem other than perhaps the font doesn't have curly quotes. Have you tried other fonts?
