Unwatched movie rental vanished during faulty internet connection

I recently purchased a rented film that I intended to watch in the evening. My internet connection has been erratic in the past week, and whilst it was downloading from the itunes store the connection timed-out. When it came back on I checked for available downloads and it resumed downloading as if nothing had gone wrong. Fine. No problem there.
But then I tried transferring it to my ipod so I could watch part of it there during my commute to work, but the connection timed out a second time. This has happened before when I was transferring over a rental, and the transfer simply stopped. It said film could not be transferred, and it remained in the rental library on the computer.
This time around, it looked on the film tab on the ipod menu as if it had transferred to the ipod, but hadn't been validated. I waited a couple of hours for the internet to come back on, and when I tried syncing with itunes again so the film could be validated, it vanished.
I looked in the ipod menu, I looked in the rental tab of the film library, and I even checked the recycling bin. The film just vanished. I never even clicked play. I'm furious. Thats my money wasted. I can't find it in the purchased playlist, because it was a rental, and there appears to be no option to redownload without paying twice. This is outrageous. I either want a refund or a new copy, but who am I trying to fool? I'm dealing with Apple here, after all...
I need to know if there is a process I can go through to get my copy of the rental back.

My apple tv  keeps stopping during the movie, I have a good internet connection but cant understand why?

The first thing to check would be your internet download speed, you can do this atwww.speedtest.net.
1080p HD movies require a recommended speed of 8 Mbps, 720p HD movies require a recommended speed of 6 Mbps, while SD movies require a recommended speed of 2.5 Mbps.

  • 3.2.1 update and unwatched movie rentals

I have an unwatched movie rental on my iPad. Meanwhile, I just clicked "Update" to upgrade to iOS 3.2.1, and received the following message from iTunes:
    iTunes
    ======
There are rented movies on the iPad "My iPad". You should transfer these movies to your iTunes library before updating this iPad. Are you sure you want to continue?
Couple of issues with this message:
    1. on other threads (http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11827605 and the Movie Rental FAQ) we've established that we actually can't transfer "these movies" to my iTunes library... so I'm being told to do something that the software won't allow.
    2. we're not told of the consequences for not following the instructions. Is this a "it's always a good idea to backup before laying down a new OS" type of message, or will I lose the unwatched rental if I upgrade to iOS 3.2.1?
I guess I can sidestep the whole issue and watch the rented movie and then upgrade...

You're not transferring them to another device, your just transferring them to iTunes on your computer so it can put them back on your iPad after you do the upgrade. Unless you do this transfer first (I think it's under the File menu) then you will lose your rented movies after the upgrade.

  • My iTunes movie rental freezes during the opening credits always at the same place.

my iTunes movie rental freezes during the opening credits always at the same place.  What is the cure?  Can I recieve credit for the rental since I could not view it in its entirerty?

    Hi Epski
Let us know how you go as i'm having the same issue also. I upgraded to yosemite and itunes 12 at the same time and thought the OS upgrade was the issue. I downgraded back to Mavericks again (for lots of reasons i won't go in to here) thinking this would fix the problem but it didn't.
When i play any video content from itunes 12 in full screen goes dark once the controls fade away. QT, appletv or anything else plays them perfectly, as per itunes 11!
You don't have a Samsung TV by any chance do you?

  • HT1657 Can I watch a rented movie while I have no Internet connection ie. on a flight

If I download a rented movie can I play it if I have no Internet connection?

Please be aware of the movie rental's time limitation that you have 30 days from the time of rental to watch your movie, and once you start watching it, you have 24 hours to finish watching it. You may watch it as many times as you like during those 24 hours. It may be helpful to make sure the download completes successfully before you begin watching the movie.
Once the download is complete you can watch it without an Internet connection. However, an Internet connection to the iTunes Store is required to authorize playback or activate the 24 hours time-limit of movie rentals. This means, only during the starting of the movie. Once you have started playing the movie rental, internet connection is not required. You can play anywhere without internet connection.
You may need to validate the rental prior to watching so it starts the rental period timer and for that you will need an internet connection. You can probably do that by starting the rented movie while on the Airport Wifi or right before leaving home. You'll have 24 hours to watch the movie after you start it.

Note: 24 hours time limit is for United States customer only, while 48 hours for other countries.

  • Movie rental froze during download and will not finish downloading or let me reorient it?

I rented a movie on iTunes for my iPad and began watching the movie. I needed to pause to goto work, but when ingot home the movie rental would not open. I went into iTunes and it showed that it needed to download. It downloaded till the end where it says processing, but then froze there. My movie rental counted down and then ended, but it still shows as downloading in iTunes and will not let me clear it or recent the movie.

I have this same issue.  It has happened with two movies I rented.  Actually, I watched most of both movies but they are both still on my iPhone despite the 24-hour expiration.  Both movies are frozen at the "processing" step.

  • TS1741 How do I get my Apple TV to view movies if there is no Internet connect but my router and home network is fine, but my IP's drops connection always without fail twice a month for 5 hours?

I have an ISP that goes down two or three times a month like a hooker with a hundred dollar bill.
How in the crap do I keep the I tunes movies that I've purchased. And backed up to my Server which also shares a
Folder on the main Computer on a 10(TB) Hard-drive. I have two windows. Windows PC's three Apple computers
    And 4 NAS BOXES,
I HAVE almost every type of computer you can imagine, to include NOTEBOOKS.
the (Network Access Storage). Have several different ones from hardware to software, or intel to D--Link.
With a total of 64 TB in hard drives, not that it matters but the boo tables are using firmware boot drives

In iTunes Preferences you should be able to change the location of where media is stored to any accessible local or network drive.
You can also store media in several locations once downloaded by re-adding files store on other drived by reference rather than copying to teh iTunes media folder (once things are in iTunes, find them in the iTunes folder, copy to the desired destination drive, then delete from within iTunes interface itself - next re-add the files by reference.  This used to work by holding alt or similar when dragging and dropping to the itunes icon or setting iTunes Preferences not to copy on import).
The issue for AppleTV is that when the internet goes down it won't be able to authorise the locally streamed media to play - also you'll need at least one computer running to stream via Home Sharing.  Even if you put media on a NAS iTunes is a helper app that fetched the media being played and sends it to AppleTV.  NAS itunes servers don't work for Home Sharing.

  • Playback stops while renting standard movies, even though have 50mb internet connection

As title says - I have rebooted the router/atv2, have got the latest firmware (did the same on the old one).
Doesn't matter if I am renting HD or standard. When I rent them on my Macbook Pro - the WHOLE movie downloads in minutes, and I have to airplay it, which defeats the whole object of it.
Also my atv2 is connected to my router using ethernet.
    Ideas?

  • Due to a faulty internet connection some of my purchases were downloaded incomplete, How do i re-download purchases?

Songs were downloaded but generally cut out half through songs.

    Hey Pete Templeton,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
This article shows how to download past purchases from your Apple ID to iTunes.
    Download past purchases
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519
    iTunes Store
Open iTunes and go to the iTunes Store.
Click Purchased in the Quick Links section.
Select the content type that you want to download (Music, Movies, TV Shows, Apps, or Books).
Select Not in My Library to view purchased content that isn't on your computer.
Find the item that you want to download. You can browse using the menu to the left. If you have more than 2,000 songs, you will see Recent Purchases instead of All Songs or Albums.
Click the Download icon next to the item you want to download.
If an item is already in your library, the Download icon won't appear.
    Have a nice day,
    Mario

  • HT1657 If I download a rented or bought movie , do I need Internet connection to view?

IF I rent or purchase a movie do I need an Internet connection to view?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
From my own personal experience, I have found that when I turn off the Wi-Fi on my Wi-Fi only iPad, I am still able to play rented movies on it. I have tried this perhaps four or five times and in each case, this has been the result. I have also noted that other users have had the same experience as I.
However saying that I have noted a small number of users that have stated they are unable to view rented movies without an Internet connection. This knowledge base article from Apple, also suggests that an Internet connection is required.
