Unwelcome caps on first word of each line in Pages 08

I'm brand new to Pages, though I've used AppleWorks for years.
I've searched exhaustively in "helps" for a/the way to disable the quirk of changing
the first letter of each line of copy to a cap when typing. (We still 'type' here in the
cornfields) I Would appreciate greatly, your help in finding an escape.
Thank you for any help,
ps

  • Select first word in each line of a text file to do something.

    How do I select the first word in each line to do something newer from a text file in Powershell?
    Example:
     GBL                            Primary    File
     local                          Primary    File
     localhost                      Primary    File

     TrustAnchors                   Primary    File

    Hi 99,
    here's an example on how to do it:
    $lines = Get-Content "C:\ExampleFolder\Example.txt"
    foreach ($line in $lines)
    Write-Host ($line.Split(" "))[0]
    Just replace the Write-Host line in the loop with what you actually want to do with the first word in the line.

  • Program to read only specific words in each Line in a text file

    Hi
    I have a question
    I need to write a program where the program must read only specific words in each line
    I will give you an example...
    PSAPPSRV.21201      1-42 13.35.54 238.360 Cur#1.HDEV RC=0 Dur=0.000 COM Stmt=SELECT VERSION FROM PSVERSION WHERE OBJECTTYPENAME = 'SYS'
    PSAPPSRV.21201      1-43 13.35.54 0.040 Cur#2.HDEV RC=0 Dur=0.000 COM Stmt=SELECT STYLESHEETNAME FROM PSOPTIONS
    These are two lines in my text file...now I need to read only the SQL statements present that is both SELECT statements.. Can you please suggest a method.......

    My first reaction to the question is why would you want such thing, but may be I am unknown :)
    Assuming you have the text as string, I mean
    String str = "PSAPPSRV.21201 1-42 13.35.54 238.360 Cur#1.HDEV RC=0 Dur=0.000 COM Stmt=SELECT VERSION FROM PSVERSION WHERE OBJECTTYPENAME = \'SYS\'";you can obtain the sql statement using substring method like
    String result = str.substring(str.indexOf("SELECT")); Again I assume there is no word SELECT preceding and the word SELECT is all caps.

  • Script to get the first word on each page

    Is there a script that would make a list of the first word of each page (or, preferably, create a text box on each page and place the next page's word in that)? My document's all in one story with one text frame on each page, although there are several other frames (header, page number) applied through master pages.

    You wrote:  I changed the numbers to "8.0425in",  "4.5681in",  "8.1275in", "5.4319in" and it mostly worked - it placed the box at exactly 5 inches (X) and at 8.085 inches (Y) instead of 4.5681 inches. Any idea why?
    No. I cannot reproduce the error you describe. I assume you've checked your numbers very closely in the script--I don't normally indicate measurements as strings.
    you wrote: Something wasn't working with the styling - it kept freezing the program -
    What do you mean by "freezing the program"? Is there a specific error message?
    The paragraph style is named "firstword" and is all lowercase letters?
    firstword paragraph style is NOT in a paragraph style group, right?
    Is the first word on any page too long when formatted with the paragraph style "firstword" to fit in the text frame?

  • Mail - Auto capitalize first word in each sentence

    When composing a message in mail is there a way to turn on auto capitalization for the word beginning each sentence?

    As far as I can tell you cant auto capitalize the first word of each sentence. I did however find out how to turn "i" into "I in case that is bugging you as well
    Go into System Preferences
    Click on Language and Text
    Choose the "Text" box on the menu bar
    It will bring you to the text substitution thingamajig where you can replace "i" with an "I". Once done it will work on Mail as well as most applications system wide.
    Hope that helps a little

  • Is there a way to capitalize just the first word on a sentence on Pages v5.2?

    I'm sort of new to iwork, but i've been working with word for a long time and i know it very well.
    In word there is a tool in which you select a paragraph and you can capitalize the first word of each sentence.
    Is there a way i can do the same with pages v5.2? Pages would only let me capitalize each word of the selected paragraph.
    Thanks

    The previous major version of Pages (Pages '09 version 4.3) could automatically capitalize the first word of each sentence as you typed. That capability and a number of others was lost with the release of Pages v 5. You may still have the older version available in your Applications folder. You may also want to switch to Word or Open Office (free), both of which will likely be more familiar if you have worked with Word before.

  • Styling first letter in each line differently [was: Dreamweaver cs4 question]

    I am trying to change the font in a group of text, I want to change the first letter of each sentence to a large size and different color and when I do this it changes the entire  paragraph in the div, so how can I change the attribute of one letter in a word? Example: See how the first letter of each sentence spells out earth?  I want to make those letters to stand out.  CAN ANYONE TELL ME HOW TO DO THIS??????

    Your question went unanswered for nearly a day because of the meaningless subject line you used. Please take a moment to read How to get help quickly.
    There are a couple of ways to achieve what you want. The way I would do it is to make each line a separate paragraph, and wrap them in a div with an ID called "earth". The following CSS style rule will make the first letter of each paragraph 24px tall and green:
    #earth p:first-letter {
      color:#090;
      font-size:24px;
    This uses the first-letter pseudo-element and applies it to all paragraphs in the earth div.

  • First letter of each sentence in pages!

    how can I fix the first letter in each sentence, it doesn't turn to uppercase automatically, although i have tryed to choose none, title case etc. in the advanced setting? what should i do?

    We guess you are talking about Pages 5. You didn't say.
    Feature dropped by Apple along with 100 others.
    Pages '09 can capitalise the first letter of sentences automatically.

  • Spacing words on a line in Pages

    Hi Everyone,
    I have a bit of problem. I was obliged to move from Word to Pages because I needed to work with Tibetan font as well as English, and since ultimately the work will probably be published in some form I need to use a Unicode font (not as yet supported by Microsoft, I believe). The only stable way to make pages of Tibetan text interleaved with English commentary and translation is (so far as I know) in Pages. So that's great.
    However, when I make a line of transcription (writing in English the way the Tibetan sounds), I also write below that the exact word-for-word translation. I have to use the TAB key to line up these words on the two lines. Words, of course, are of different lengths, and with TABS the applications (Pages or Word) have their own way of systematising which causes the gaps to be hugely variable. I cannot specify an amount of space that I would like to appear between words, with the end of that space marking the next tab stop, but that is what I would like to do. Still with me? Sometimes I have to use the space bar, but since the fonts in the transcription line and the translation line are in different sizes, they don't line up well.
    Is there a way round this? Please don't suggest setting the TABS. I did try that and it was horrible.
    Thanks.

    iMac (Intel)   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi Magnus,
    Of course, I should have said in my original post that I had to use an OSX application because I only work on a Mac. And it has to be a Unicode font because they are the only ones that will form glyphs properly at different sizes. XenoType at http://www.xenotypetech.com/ make the only unicode font for Macs, and Pages is the only application that I've been told of where you can run it without problems.
    There has been a lot of progress in recent years enabling the writing of Tibetan in word processing programs but the greater part of that work has been on the Windows platform. However, you are right that NeoOffice may now be able to handle Tibetan but that is a very recent happening, while Microsoft Office for Mac does not support Unicode. So I can input other Tibetan fonts but some of the glyphs will be badly formed.
    Actually, I can't see why you would want to use something like Furigama to store text in, not least because Pages is perfect for simply writing Tibetan. TextEdit isn't bad either but interleaving with English etc I didn't find very smooth. In fact I don't find it very smooth in Pages, and my workaround is to write the English parts mostly in MSWord and copy them across because then I can use all those short keys that make life so much easier!
    You can get a free keyboard for typing in Wylie from Chris Walker at http://www.tibetanportal.com/ which is a doddle to use - you still need a font though.
    I don't think I am going to get a solution to this problem in Pages. Maybe another application will do something soon - or maybe they won't. In the meantime I have to get the work done. Thanks for the interesting links, by the way.
    All the best
    Ruth
    I have run into similar problems, but I have never
    fought enough to find a good solution. Some of the
    things you could try though are first to look at
    http://homepage.mac.com/thgewecke/mlingos9.html#otherl
    for resources about Tibetan and the Mac.
    I think MS Office and NeoOffice both handle Tibetan
    if you only find a keyboard for it. I can paste
    Tibetan text in both anyhow.
    Both MS Office and NeoOffice have support for furigana/
    phonetic guides, if you activate support for
    Asiatic languages. (Pages does not have this yet, but
    it is my secret dream that they will get it in some
    future version.)
    You could consider using furigana to store text in
    one of the languages. The implementation is a little
    clumsy, so I recommend you to try it out thoroughly
    before you type a lot of text in it. It can be tricky
    to change the formatting.

  • Reading first word from text file

    Hello all,
    I created a program which I can type in a line and store it into a file. What I need my next program to do is read and display just the first word from each line on the text file.
    Here is what I have:
    import java.io.*;
    public class ReadFromFile
    public static void main (String args[])
         FileInputStream firstWord;
              try
                  // Open an input stream
                  firstWord = new FileInputStream ("FileofWords.txt");
                  // Read a line of text
                  System.out.println( new DataInputStream(firstWord).readLine() );
                  // Close our input stream
                  firstWord.close();
                   System.err.println ("Unable to read from file");
                   System.exit(-1);
    }

    what i would like is my program to get the first word of every line and put it in my array.
    This is what i have attempted.
    import java.io.*;
    import java.io.IOException;
    import java.io.InputStream;
    import java.io.InputStreamReader;
    import java.io.BufferedReader;
    public class testing {
         String[] tmp = new String [2];
         String str;
         public void programTest()
              try
                             BufferedReader in2 = new BufferedReader(new FileReader("eventLog.log"));
                             while ((str = in2.readLine()) != null)
                                  tmp = str.split(" ");
                                  System.out.println(tmp[0]);
                        catch(IOException e)
                             System.out.println("cannot read file");
    public static void main(String[] args)
                 testing B = new testing();
                 B.programTest();

  • Comparing two words in different lines

    hi frens, please help me.
    let say each line has 2 words
    <word1> <word2>
    what i am going to do is to compare the first word for each line. for example, let say this is the input file:
    hello world
    baby good
    hello baby
    good stuff
    hello good
    good job
    what i want for the output is:
    hello = world; baby; good
    baby = good
    good = stuff; job
    so it compares the prefix, if equals, then just print the second words behind. they are stored in hash table. thanks.

  • Bold on specific first words each line?

    I'm wondering if there is a way to fully automate this. I'm styling an extensive interview-format body of text, and I would only like the first word of each paragraph to be bolded ONLY if they're one of three names. I currently have a nested style bolding the first word of each paragraph, but not all of the paragraphs in the text start with an interview name. Can anyone help?

    Depends on whether you need it to happen automagically when you start new documents with interviews, or if you need to just do it for a single doc where all of your text has already been flowed in. If in the second case, I'd:
    1) Make a duplicate of the nested-style-parastyle called BoldNames
    2) Remove the nested style from the old paragraph style - now zero paragraphs have the nested style applied, and you have a separate unused paragraph style with the nested style in it.
    3) Search the doc with a GREP query:
    Find
    ^(Jake|Joel|James)
    Change to
    $
    with format of
    BoldNames
    That way, only paragraphs that feature one of those names at the very beginning of the paragraph will be marked with the paragraph style that has the nested style that applies bold.
