Up for the Challenge? A Real Mystery (Fried Power Supply?)

I didn't know if this is the appropriate place to post this, but here goes.
I have a file server at home that runs Arch/KDE. It used to be a desktop/gaming machine, but I don't really play games on my computer anymore so I re-purposed it as a file server (SSH, Unison). It has a Geforce 9800GT video card and a 610watt continuous power supply. (No onboard video, requires a video card to function).
Yesterday I helped a client with his PC. I was trying to figure out if his issue was his video card or his motherboard, so I shut down the server, unplugged it, and removed the video card and put it in his PC to test (since my video card is known-good). After testing, I put it back in my server, connected the power cable to the video card, secured it with a screw, and continued working on my server.
About a half hour later, I noticed a really foul stench coming from my PC. I checked all the temps (CPU, video card, etc) and all were in range. I even tried a video card from a different PC and it still stunk. I traced the smell to my power supply, which stunk really bad. (Smells like a burned up motor). The Fan in the power supply turns just fine but it stinks! I unplugged it and stopped using it.
The server works absolutely fine (runs good, boots up fine, graphics works great, everything works) but it smells so bad you can smell it quite some distance from the tower so I'm not comfortable leaving it on.
Here's the mystery:
Is it possible that it's all just a coincidence, that the power supply decided to die coincidentally after testing the video card in another PC, or could testing the video card in a different PC have caused the power supply to burn up? The problem is definitely the power supply, but what I'm wrestling with is the fact that the server has been on for probably several weeks straight with no issue, and it decides to quit immediately after testing the video card in another PC. I know the coincidence is possible but it seems like a stretch.

It is probably rather simple.. I've had the same general thing happen many times. When you turn on your machine the hardware demands a lot more power compared to when it is just running. Disks and fans need to spin up and so forth. So this PSU might have been fine if you had just kept it powered on, it would never have happened. Having said that it's bad that such a powerful unit dies, but I've come to accept that most power supplies are garbage when it comes to reliability.. Doesn't matter if you spend extra $$$ on a "good" brand or if you stick to cheaper ones - they just suck in general..
If I had the money I'd buy a UPS to remove power surges and such, but until then I will have to buy a new PSU every second year I guess.
That makes sense. I emailed the company to get an RMA yesterday, and have not heard back yet. I don't have the money to buy a new one so it really depends on them replacing it under the warranty. I'm sure I'll be without the server up to a month until it's fixed.

More than likely... I believe ebay has an area where you may be able to sell it for parts.

Can you get a power point program for the mac, my daughter has a power point assignment and i am not sure how to do it on the mac

You can use a free alternative like openoffice for this:

or libre office which is a fork of open office:

  • Sample programmes in C# for setting voltage in a TDK lambda power supply

please provide some guidance for setting the voltage of a TDK lambda power supply through GPIB. Any driver software needto be installed?

If you use an NI GPIB controller, then you will need to install NI-488 and it is recommended to install and use NI-VISA. There will be coding examples installed with the drivers. You don't mention the model number but you might find an existing instrument driver from NI or the vendor.

  • Mac Crashes.... for the last two days I upon power up I have experienced the "White screen of death" on my 2008 Mac Pro 2.8.

for the last several days I have experienced the dreaded wite screen of death upon power up of my 2008 Mac Pro 2.8,
Screen will hang white - no apple logo - when I hit the power button resart - the mac power light does not go out, but "clicks" and  the mac will restart.
I get the white apple logo screen and then some terminal script (about 20-25 lines) that lasts for a dew seconds - then an apple message appears telling me that my computer needs to be restarted due to an error - press a key or wat.... this will cycle continuously.
If I power down and boot in safe mode - the computer seems to start up - with a crash log.
Once I restart from safe mode - the mac seems to start fine and I am using it without issue - (of course until I power down and come back in the studio the following day...)
I am not familiar with crash logs - but here are the two most recent...

Remove the third party uaudio and motu drivers then restart your Mac.
Once I restart from safe mode - the mac seems to start fine and I am using it without issue
Safe Mode only loads required kernel extensions which is why Safe Mode works, "without issue" ...

  • "power dial" mystery and power supply

    1. So it has a power dial with 3 settings, but anyone can give me real info (non of that for dummies answers) about what does the power dial do? does it change what settings, disconnets some of the 4 cores? limits what etc'?
    2. what power supply does it have? I think I saw 250W in one place, that makes no sense since at that level, one cannot upgrade the graphic card to even an envidia 8600 level.
    any info?

Hi csmba, welcome to the forum,
unfortunately you haven't included which system you have.
    If you have a K100 series, which I suspect then;
    1) this link should hopefully provide more information for you. (Basically a manual switch for "speed stepping" )
    2) according to this site, it can have a 280W or 400W.
    Regards

  • Can I use the iPod Nano cable and AC power supply with the iPhone?

Just purchased my iPhone 3G. Phone was in my pocket and the AT&T clerk neglected to put the box with the computer cable in the bag with the other accessories.
Until I can pick it up, can I use my iPod Nano cable? The plug seems the same size but I don't want to break anything.
Also, there was no power supply in the box due to the recall. Can I use the iPod AC power supply I bought for the iPod? It is the white brick about 3" by 3" by 1" with a USB socket in the side.
Thank you for helping me with my start-up glitches.

Ps. When you do get the accessories, look for a green dot (on the side where the prongs of the plug come out). If there, fine; if not, your adapter is subject to the recently announced recall of ultracompact USB adapters.

  • The use of WS-CAC-6000W power supply

We are replacing the entire network in a refinery, using  more than 100 Cisco switches.
I’d appreciate your help on a specific issue
    1-Condition:
There are two supplies WS-CAC-6000W for the VS-C6513E-SUP2T
Each supply is connected to two 220VAC power inputs
Each 220VAC input of a power supply connects from distinct electrical panels
    2-Fail scenario:
What happens if an electrical panel is off ?
    3-Conclusion
The data sheet says that if single input is active, and running from 220VAC, the unit is capable of providing 2900W. The same data sheets says if there two power supplies they operate in load-sharing so, the output will be 6000w still
    4-Is that conclusion correct?
    Thanks
    -Jose

Each 220VAC input of a power supply connects from distinct electrical panels
I have no idea who implemented this but this is incorrect.
Each PS has two input feeds.  This is correct.  Both input feeds MUST go to the same power source.  Let's say you have two power feeds (like anyone else):  One is "raw" power and one is UPS power.
So for PS 1, for instance, both input feeds must go to "raw" power.  For PS 2, both feeds must go to UPS.
Your current setup means that one input feed from for each PS goes to "raw" power and the other input feed goes to UPS.  This won't work.  If you fail to UPS, the each power supply does/will NOT have enough input to power the line cards in the chassis.

  • Can I Charge the iPad using a 115V / 400Hz power supply?

The charging unit specifies 100-240V and 50-60Hz. Will the iPad be damaged if I use a 115V and 400Hz power supply. The 400Hz power supply is what I've got access to using an aircraft power supply. Thanks.

The increase in frequency will cause a higher input impedance to the transformer inside the charger itself. The charger will therefore have less charging current available and therefore charge the ipad slower. If the compensation circuitry inside tries to overcome the reduced current on the output, it could cause damage.
The formula for input impedance on an inductive device is XL = 2piFL. If you increase input frequency (F), you increase input impedance (XL).
Note: If it's a military aircraft, I am surprised the Plane Commander will let you use the device on the aircraft due to there being transmitter(s) inherent to the ipad. Military aircraft are EMP-hardened from outside emissions only. A transmitter on the inside of the aircraft can cause interference to certain sensors and equipment.
Additionally, the power supply does not meet military standards for grounding, as there is not a grounding pin on the power plug.

  • G5 2GHZ what are the effects of low or unstable power supply on a G5?

    Hello
I have installed a identical 3 G5 avid systems in prague for editing. 2 of the systems work fine. Third station has a recurring problem. For some reason, at a given moment, the G5 starts having very strong fan flutters, locks up and then won't restart. When it does restart some minutes later it either works fine or it can have a kernel panic. When the machine is returned to the office, the machine works fine and the problem does not recur. Hence, I figure it is something to with the installation or its location. I have started to put aside the other avid equipment aside as culprits as the result is the same even when I soft accessories around.
You may say that the machine is dead etc. The thing that is very strange is that THIS IS THE THRID MACHINE I HAVE REPLACED AND THE PROBLEM CONTINUES.
I have not yet exorcised the room but I might try. In the mean time, I am wondering if there is a power supply issue at the socket. The system has a UPS for power protection. Any ideas?

    chlowden-
Yup, I am leaning towards AC. Do you have any way of testing the outlets? It could be a bad ground or something along those lines.
Do the UPS's have Automatic Voltage Regulation? If it does not, it is possible that the sags are being passed on to your equipment, especially if the UPS threshold is low.
    Luck-

    Hi neilchuang,
A read timeout error is usually caused by an error on the command string sent.
The first thing I would check is if the instrument requires a termination character at the end of each message (such as linefeed). I noticed in the Spy capture that the commands do not have a termination character attached. This means that the instruments never recognized that you completed the query command, it doesn't execute the requested action and as a consequence of that it doesn't have any data to return.
One question: Is the instrument detected by MAX when you scan for instruments?. If yes then you can assume that the GPIB software and hardware are properly installed. The scan for instruments sends the *IDN? (terminated by a linefeed). You can right-cli
ck on the instrument entry in MAX and select "Communicate with instrument". Notice that at the end of the command the linefeed is included (\n).
Double check with the instrument manual if the commands sent are the right ones.
Finally, there is an instrument driver available in the idnet library: www.ni.com/idnet. Search for 3631. Since you are working in C you can use the LabWindows/CVI Plug and Play driver. Even if you decide not to use the instrument driver, you can still use it as an excellent reference on how to program with the instrument.
    Hope this helps!.

  • No 133 for me.....new power supply?

    KT333 Ultra
    2x 256 2700 DDR
    Was working perfect with Thunderbird 1ghz (100mhz bus)....recently went to a n XP 2000 (133mhz bus).
random freezing and crashing all the time now.
I've set bios defaults, upgraded the bios...triple checked the heatsink/fan.....yes I've got thermal paste on....my cpu temp is only showing 41deg C idle....so it can't be a heat issue...I've ran both mem chips individually, both did the same thing.
If I run the CPU at 100mhz bus it works perfectly.
So now it comes down to my power supply.
    300watt max:  15 amps 3.3V and 22 amps 5.5V
Hmm, so I'm getting a little over 100watts true power...not good
The one I'm looking at buying is from a local computer shop.
    SuperFlower 420watt: 28 amps 3.3V and 42amps 5.5V
    So that's 210watt combined.
I've never heard of this brand name before....has anyone else? Should I get it?

  • How do i connect the "back-fan" to a pc power-supply?

    Hello! My neim is tachtoz!
    I have some questions!
I want to connect the "back-fan" of a mac g5 to a pc powersupply.
doesnt matter if i have to cut the cables on the fan or the powersupply.
I guess its +12V, but what cables is juice and what is neutral? Also, some of these cables must be some kind of fan speed cable, since its 4 cables/fan?
Here is a pic of the fans and connector.

  • 2.16 GHz 15" MBP or wait for the 17" MBP?

So I'm at the mall today with the wife when we happen to go into the Apple Store so she could look at some iPod stuff. I'm playing around with a MBP when the guy tells me that they just got in a shipment of 15" MBP's in all three processor speeds! What luck!
With all the shipping delays for the MBP's, I just couldn't pass it up, so I ended up leaving with the "Ultimate" version: 2.16 GHz, 1 GB RAM, 256 VRAM and a 100GB 7200 RPM drive.
    So here's the deal:
The 15.4" inch screen is awesome and big enough for what I do (Logic Pro sequencing), but to me a 17 inch screen would be desirable as well. It's not an absolute must by any means considering I have a 20" Dell LCD display that the MBP will be connected to 60-70% of the time, but all things being equal, if given a choice between a 15" or a 17" configured exactly the same, I'd take the 17" just for the extra screen real estate. So although I'm EXTREMELY tempted to, I haven't opened the box for my new MBP yet because of the recent rumors of a possible 17" MBP being announced during the Apple Birthday event. The 14-day return period for my MBP ends April 1st so assuming they actually annouce a 17" model by then, I could return the 15.4" unopened for a 100% refund by April 1st and then turn right around and order the 17".
    The question:
Given the current MBP supply issues and the availability (or lack thereof) of an 8x SuperDrive to go in it, realistically what are the chances that a 17" MBP is made available in April?
What would you do in this situation: Don't open the 15" and wait until April 1st to see if a 17" is announced or forget the 17" and stick with the 15"?

    Thanks for the replies, guys.
The more I think about it, the more I think I'm gonna just stick with the 15". Sure, a 17" would be nice, but I've already spent way more than I should've anyway. Like I said earlier, I don't do any graphics-intensive work or gaming so I really don't need a 17" LCD - especially with a 20" LCD to connect it to. Besides, even if a 17" was announced, it would obviously be more expensive and would extend me even more than I have already. I've fed the credit card too much as it is!
I hate to admit it but the truth of the matter is that this is yet another case of me being greedy again; I do this with EVERY technical purchase I make; from iPods to TV's, I ALWAYS want the latest & greatest, the biggest & best and I'll try to find every way I can to justify it - even when I really don't need it. It is for that reason alone that credit card companies absolutely LOVE me. It's messed up being cursed with AFFNTS (Always Fiending For New Toys Syndrome). It's a disease, I tell you!
In my case, the 15.4 is screen is big enough for OCCASIONAL PORTABLE web surfing and Logic Pro music work. Like I said earlier, the MBP is gonna be sitting on a desk and connected to a 20" LCD display at least 70% of the time (probably more than that). I don't travel so the most I would ever be portable would be moving from the desk to the bedroom or the living room when my wife wants to use our other PC - and that would only be if I deem it safe to have my MBP out around my hyperactive 22-month old son who tries to grab everything he sees!
The bottom line is the 15.4" is fine and I think I'll stick with it. I wouldn't be settling in my mind either because I actually had my heart set on the 2.16GHz 15.4" model in the first place until I played around with a friend's 17" PowerBook and started thinking "Wouldn't the extra 2" of screen real estate be nice?" That's how the drama always starts...
Anyway, they'll no doubt drop a 17" inch real soon (maybe in April) I'm sure and I'll probably be upset for a minute, but I'll get over it. Frankly, I just picked a bad time to start craving for a Mac. As such, I've been seriously obsessed with this whole Intel switch and debating when and what to buy ever since January (which is waaay too long) and I'm tired of thinking about it.
I got an awesome machine right now and that's good enough for me. So without further delay, I'm gonna pop the box open and start enjoying the fruits of my labor!
Now I just hope its defect-free...
    Thanks for the opinions.

I have a 4 gen Time Caps. and a 2nd Gen Airport Extreme I would like to extend my TC network to use the Extreme for the purpose of having internet available to my TV box wired.  Is this possible and how to I get them to work together?
How can I get my Time Cap (TC 4 gen) to recognise my 2gen Airport Extreem (AE)
    Frank

Thanks for the info, this really helps.
Power up the AirPort Extreme for a few minutes, then hold in the reset button on the back of the Extreme for 10 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the Extreme to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
It might be possible to use wireless to configure the Extreme, but I recommend using a wired connection. Temporarily, connect an Ethernet cable from your Mac to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Extreme.
Click the AirPort icon at the top of the Mac's screen and wait a few seconds for a listing of New AirPort Base Station to appear. Just below that, click on  AirPort Extreme.
The illustration below shows an AirPort Express. You will see AirPort Extreme on your screen.
AirPort Setup will open up automatically and take a minute to analyze the network, then announce that the Extreme will be configured to extend the Time Capsule network.
Enter a device name that you want to use for the Extreme and click Next
Wait a minute while AirPort Setup configures things for you. When you see the message of Setup Complete, click Done.
You can disconnect the Ethernet cable that you used for the set up now. Things should be working. The Extreme is providing additional wireless coverage the the Ethernet ports are enabled. You can connect to any port that you want since they all operate the same in this type of setup.
