for college/grad school should i get ipad 3 or mac book air?

Nobody can tell you which one is best for you, it's a personal preference. However, here are a few factors you might want to take into consideration:
1-They're two different devices that serve different purposes. The way you take notes in an iPad is different than the way you would on a MBA. On the iPad, with apps like Evernote and Notability you can take more complete notes than with a MBA. You have the option to have audio notes, write with a Stylus, make diagrams by hand to explain/relate concepts easily. With the external keyboard (for that I'd recommend using the Apple Wireless Keyboard with the InCase Origami Workstation) you could type just as fast as you would on a MBA and format the text just like you would on the MBA. However, for bigger (possibly partner) papers, the MBA would help you. You could start the paper on the iPad without any issues (using Pages or even Evernote) but you'd need a laptop/computer to finalize the project.
2-Portability wise, they're both incredibly light. The iPad is somewhat smaller = lighter but with the keyboard they're about the same. The fact that with the ipad + keyboard combo you can take out the keyboard only when you need it, for me, is an advantage be ause when I don't want to use it, it's not in the way. For others, it's a disadvantage because you have to carry two items instead of one.
3-MBA let's you access all websites and most file types. If one of your classes requires you to go to the Browser and see a Flash enabled page, the iPad would not be of much help. Same goes for any programs you might need to install. On the MBA you'll most likely be able to do so. On the iPad, chances are there won't be an app for that.
4-Aonce you already have a MBP, I'd go for the iPad. If/when the iPad falls short(because of the limitations mentioned above) you can use the laptop. And in the mean time, use the iPad for everything else. That way you get the best of both worlds. You'd only need to take the MBP when you know you'll need it and wont have to carry that weight all the time.
6-Studying (reading, highlighting, annotating) is easier and more intuitive on the iPad. The iPad is great for reading, combine that with the fact that you can leave comments/notes just like you would on a physical piece of paper, and you've got the best way to learn IMO.

  • Ipad problems since i did up grade on iTunes

After I did an up grade on iTunes my email is having problems and will not allow me to send from my photos, but I can recieve and send from a new e mail and my Words with friends will not let me do the chat now .

Try this first and see if it helps. Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep button and the home button at the same time for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. After the iPad fully restarts, see if you can email photos again.

  • My new IPad Mini tells me that I need Itunes 10.7 when connected to my Apple computer. When I try to up grade, I'm told that there is no newer version than what I have. IPad mini says I have system version 6.1.3. The ITunes version on the Mini is unknown.

The problem is that your Mac software is quite old.  You must have a version of OS X on your Mac earlier than 10.6.8 (current is 10.8.3), so your particular version of OS X cannot support any later version of iTunes.  (The current iTunes version is 11.0.2).  In particular, your iTunes on your computer cannot deal with your iPad which has software that is much more current than your OS X operating system (and Mac iTunes).

3-The iPad needs a computer to be updated, synced, etc. So if you don't have one, definitely get the MBA. The MBA can work as a standalone computer. The iPad needs to be synced to an iTunes library in a computer.

  • Both my ipad 3 and my iphone 5 does not want to up grade applications

I am getting notifications that some applications need up grades. Both my ipad 3 and iphone 5 tries to do the up grade but eventually time out is displayed? What else can I do? My iOS is up to date on both devices

Try a reset: Simultaneously hold down the Home and On buttons until the device shuts down. Ignore the off slider if it appears. Once shut down is complete, if it doesn't restart on it own, turn the device back on using the On button. In some cases it also helps to double click the Home button and close all apps from the tray before doing the reset.
Log out and log back in with your AppleID (Settings App > iTunes&App Stores)
    Reset your wireless router.

  • The new iPad for sixth grader?

For a sixth grader, do you think the new ipad, 32 gb would be fine?

Also learn how to reset after the passcode is set and then forgotten, while restoring the previously backed-up information.  Sorry, but the number of "my daughter forgot her passcode" posts *daily* is notable.
Also many reports of leaving backpacks unattended in classrooms and iPads disappearing.  Sorry, but read the number of posts about this.

  • I have an iPad 2 and external speakers work, but JACK for headset doesn't produce sound. If I wiggle, twist or adjust it, the earphones make a crackly and very low grade sound. Ideas?

No aud. or sound when using wired headphones. If I constantly play with input jack it will produce a low sound or a regular sound but it's not of any quality worth listening. I have owned this iPad for over three years. It was purchased new.
    Happenings since 2013:
Broke screen due to fall on floor 9-2013
Screen replaced by techs on 10-2013
Upon getting back iPad after being repaired discovered no WiFi on 11-2013
Sent back to techs to repair issues with WiFi on 11-2013
Received unit back on 12-21-13. I only checked WiFi. Unit remained unused for a few weeks.
Used unit during Xmas season on average 12 hours a day but have not yet discovered or even tried a pair of headsets until after Xmas.
Does work on screen and internal wifi antenna effect output sound on headphones?
Can this be easily repaired, possibly without taking off the cover? Does it have an update conflict? Is is a Settings issue?
Please help with any ideas or suggestions.

    Hello,

Can't photo stream from iMac 10.5.8. To new iPad 4th G. Can't seem to upgrade iTunes software . What can I do?.. Thanks John.

    Buy Snow Leopard upgrade:

See if the iTunes update is available with software update, get it from downloads (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1576), or otherwise find the link to 10.7 in the "how do I downgrade from iTunes 11" threads. Most of them link to non-Apple sites carrying previous software versions like itunes 10.7.
