  • Integrating with Microsoft Office was a BAD IDEA.

Oracle made the decision to violate one of the cardinal rules of software development:
Do not integrate with a product if you are using in a way other than it was intended.
Of course, one can use software beyond it's purpose (unless of course it's a Microsoft product) but fully reliant integration?!!!
First of all, there is no well-defined boundary between MS Word functionality that translates to meaningful template-building functionality and that which does not. Therefore it is not helpful to use this 'familiar product' to build templates, because you run into roadblocks at every turn. There is no way to know a priori which functions will help build your template and which are just for word processing. It's more confusing than the familiarity is worth. Frankly, it's just lazyness on Oracle's part, to avoid making a real template builder. (The new online template builder kinda sucks, especially when you have more than a handful of columns.)
This selective, unpredictable support of Microsoft functionality is reflected in the fact that OBIEE 11g DOES NOT SUPPORT INTERNET EXPLORER 8 on Windows XP!
Like Microsoft, Oracle has adopted the philosophy that its users shall not be able to do anything innovative, creative, or interesting that was not expressly intended during their requirements-gathering phase. Furthermore, much of the interesting functionality barely works as it is. The Oracle-Microsoft alliance is an untrustworthy one, and is bad for Oracle.

  • I think it was a bad idea switching from ATT to Verizon

So we have been a Verizon customer for 6 days. I started looking into the online billing for my account.
Right off the bat we owe $259.47 without doing anything.
So I look into the billing details. OK so they prorate some expected usage...whatever.
It's the equipment charges that concern me, A LOT, with this "Edge" program.
    It's simple math.
We purchased three phones, but I will focus on one of the Samsung Galaxy 5s devices for sake of discussion.
The price tag at Best Buy said $299 with new plan activation.  Great.  Let's just say $300 to make the math easy.  Again, just to note we were switching from being LONG TIME AT&T customers to Verizon for the first time.
I digress. When I look at the equipment charges, the Edge balance (six days in mind you) is $569.81.  Simple math tells me that $300 does not equal $569.81. So I'm paying way more over the span of 20 months than what the phone was actually priced for at the store. Better yet, the first installment of the 20 installments is $30.81.  So let's see $30.81 x 20 = $616.20.  So I will be paying DOUBLE over the span of 20 months over what the device is actually worth.
    WHY?
    I have this problem x 3 phones.
Would have been cheaper to just buy the phones for $299 and not done the Edge plan.  This isn't much of a deal at all.
Looks like we need to cancel and go back to AT&T ASAP.  This edge program is a huge ripoff.

The prices at Best Buy are not honored at Verizon Wireless.
The Edge Program takes the full price of the devices not any discounted prices.
That would be why you are seeing what you are seeing on your online account details.
Add in taxes and administrative fees per line, insurance if you have it, prorated service and the month in advance makes your invoice higher on the first invoice.
After that you pay the price of your plan plus taxes and fees and that $30.81 per device.

The link above is for the Edge program.

  • Usb hard drive good/bad idea?

    greetings,
I was informed that it was a bad idea to attach a usb hard drive because it will be running(spinning/processing) at all times awaiting commands to whomever needs to access via network. furthermore adding that this would effect longevity of the hard drive as well as creating heating issues. he suggested that a better solution is to setup an extra computer(which i have access to) as a server with all my hard drives attached.
my goal is to allow all to access a single hard drive via network.
so my questions are: 1) is it true that a usb hard drive attached to the ap extreme will running 24/7? & 2) which is the better solution to allow all to access a hard drive a) usb hard drive attached to the ap extreme or b) create a server with the extra mac mini?
thank you in advance for your responses!

Ok, in case anyone is interested, done a little research, flash drives are fat 32 format, the hd is ntfs format, just on a whim i tried a hub as Jerry had mentioned above since I had one laying around, no difference, so I reformatted my hd to fat 32, put partial music library on the hd, will try it today. Another note to this, a few people have said that if music is spread over 8 folders, only the 8 will show up, also you will have to manually select the folder to be played through media source, solution here is 1 massive folder, I will try this as well.

  • What's with the new Firefox 8.0? I made the mistake of updating mine and about 30% of the icons in bookmarks disappeared. It looks like you are requiring a favicon. Anyway, BAD IDEA!!!!!

Briansyddal - you might be able to manage your phone without a PC, but many of us can't, especially those of us with large iTunes libraries.  How do you propose I manage my 250GB of music using only a phone?  Maybe I could go out and buy 10 iPhones and spread my library out among them!
Catz537 - I have the same problem as you and I've spent hours on the web trying to find a solution to it.  It was a problem with iOS 7 and  8.1.1 doesn't fix it.  The the only advice from Apple is completely useless because it requires you, effectively, to delete and recreate your iTunes library and lose all your metadata, album art, notes etc and there's also no guarantee it will work.   I wish I could be more help (even more - I wish Apple could be more help) - I updated to 8.1.1 at 1400 today.  At 2200 I'm still "waiting for changes to be applied" for a measly 16GB of music transfer.

    PLEASE Call me to Help.
    Wade, Oklahoma USA xxx-xxx-xxxx
    Thank YOU!

Wade, there is a way "undo" the Refresh but it does have a lot of steps. See whether you can do this on your own.
As you may have noticed, the Refresh/Reset feature copies your settings (profile) folder to the desktop into a folder named "Old Firefox Data".
Check inside "Old Firefox Data" folder for a folder with a semi-randomized name. If there's only one, that probably has your old settings and add-ons. If there's more than one, you'll want to work with the one that was updated most recently.
Once you have identified the profile folder you want to restore, here is my suggested "old profile resurrection procedure":
    '''Overview'''
These are the steps that are covered in more detail in the rest of this post:
    # Create a new Firefox profile
    # Remove everything from that new profile folder
    # Copy in everything from the old profile folder
'''Create a new Firefox profile (Windows)'''
Exit Firefox and start up in the Profile Manager by pasting the following into the Start menu search box, or the Start > Run dialog, and pressing Enter:
    firefox.exe -P
''Note: Any time you want to switch profiles, exit Firefox and return to this dialog.''
Click the Create Profile button, assign a name like OldSettings, and skip the option to change the folder location. Then select that new profile in the dialog and start Firefox.
'''Open the New Profile folder in Windows Explorer'''
Firefox in the new profile should look like a factory fresh installation. Open the Troubleshooting Information page using either:
    * "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
    * Help menu > Troubleshooting Information
    * type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter
In the first table, click the "Show Folder" button. Firefox will launch your brand new profile folder in Windows Explorer.
Leaving that folder open, switch back to Firefox, and Exit. When Firefox closes, the profile folder should be front and center, or you can activate it using the Task bar.
'''Copy Old Data in Place of New'''
In that new profile folder, select all the contents and delete.
Leaving that window open, open or switch over to your Old Firefox Data folder. Drill down into your old profile folder. At this level you should see a folder named bookmarkbackups among other things.
Select everything (Ctrl+a) and Copy (either right-click > Copy or Ctrl+c).
Switch to the empty new profile folder in other window and Paste (either right-click > Paste or Ctrl+v). This may take a minute since some of the files are large.
    '''Start Firefox'''
Firefox should start up in that new profile with the resurrected old profile data. Success?

  • Is it a bad idea to use Time Capsule to access my iTunes music?

I'm thinking about putting all of my music on my time capsule and making iTunes access it through that.
Is this a bad idea for any reason? I'm thinking that there could be a few seconds of delay when playing a song or something, which I don't really mind.
The other thing I thought is that this could be bad because if my Time Capsule fails, then I lose my music, whereas if I store my iTunes music folder on my computer, it will be backed up by Time Machine, and therefore be in 2 safe locations instead of 1.
    Anybody have any thoughts/suggestions?

  • Firefox was fast when I first started using. Now, very slow to open and freezes often. Frequent message is "Warning-unresponsive script". Do I need to switch back to Internet Explorer?

Switched from Internet Explorer because seemed slow. Firefox was fast at first. Then upgraded to Firefox 4 and frequently have trouble opening. Sometimes page doesn't open, or is very slow. If I try to open again I will get Mozilla Firefox Unresponsive or a message that say "Warning-Unresponsive Script". Often have to restart and do the whole thing again. Don't really want to switch back to Internet Explorer, but getting tired of taking a half hour to get into my emails!

I am having the same problem, but not sure what's causing the slow down. Restarting in safe mode fixes the performance problem... but disabling all plug ins and extensions in normal mode (and restarting firefox) still shows the bug. Any ideas?

  • Distributed encoding of referenced movies --bad idea?

Distributed encoding of referenced movies (using Compressor) --is this a bad idea? If you do this routinely and it works for you, please let me know.
    Thanks,
    Cris

    Nebraska,
Thanks for your reply. I am trying a home network to see if I can cut down my encoding time and increase my capacity on existing equipment. What I have is outlined in "other details" below. Because of the limitations, I am putting highest priority on trying to find out what has been causing problems with my real time mp2 transcoder nor recoginizing some Quicktime files and consider the Qmaster distributed processing for batch processing files for web streaming. For now, thtis will have to do.
I see the sense of having a dedicated server for the source footage. But I need to do things peer to peer. I use to oversee a WinNT server years back. Its been awhile. Do you would log into each of your G5 quads as the same domain user (or Mac OSX server equivalent)? Is one of your G4's (not the server) the controller? Is the same machine both controller and client?
For the referenced movie I tried, it took many many hours --at least several times longer than if I did the job on a single machine. However, that was when I only had a cluster of two. I might try again with three.

  • MBPR w/Hard Case = Good or Bad Idea?

I am the happy owner of a new MBPr 15" and like many other owners am keen on protecting my investment. The first thing that came to mind was to outfit it with a hard case and being a detail guy I researched the topic online. Turns out many are saying that a hard case is NOT a good idea for the following two good reasons:
extra weight on the screen wears down the hinges which can lead to a very expensive screen replacement.
overheating/heating issues even with hard cases that have cutouts for vents that can cause permanent damaged to the battery and internal components.
Apple sells the hard cases in their stores and it seems that they are divided on the answer with some "Genius" bar employees saying hard cases are not good and others suggesting them to protect your MacBook Pro. Hard case companies are of course saying that their products are safe to use (the contrary would seriously jeopardize the sale of their product). I have asked Apple and leading case/accessory maker Moshi to comment on this issue and will post their replies in this thread.
My goal is to pool the statements, experiences and opinions on the subject to make it definitely clear once and for all if hard cases are indeed a bad idea to protect your Retina MacBook Pro. Do you have anything to say or share?

The general rule of thumb is that sample-instrument samples should be stored on a separate drive. This is particularly crucial if you're streaming samples from disk (EXS with "virtual memory" on, or DFD (direct from disk) as found in other sample-based plugs).
And you'll want to record audio on a separate drive as well, never on your system drive (except in a pinch) if you can help it.
For a laptop, the ideal system would be to have separate external drives for audio recording and samples. If you're working on a tower/desktop model, these additional drives can be exclusively external drives or a combination of internal and external drives.
    My system:
    • Lacie 250G (video playback) FW400
    • Glyph 250G (sample storage #1) FW400
    • OWC 350G (sample storage #2) eSATA (via eSATA PCI-e card)
    • Maxtor 500G drive (audio recording/project drive) -- internal
    Works very nicely!

My bank is offering to increase my credit limit on 2 credit cards.I have an excellent credit score, and already have more than enough credit limit available on my credit cards.I know that a higher limit would make for a better credit score when there is some debt on the cards.HOWEVER - What I'd like to know:Is it ever a bad idea to accept a credit limit increase offer from a bank / credit card issuer? Also - Can a too high of a credit limit affect ones ability to get a mortgage or other loans?  Thanks!

  • Storing files on top level a bad idea?

    Hi all,
I was wondering if there is any problem with storing files on the top level of my Mac, the level that has the Applications, System, Library and Users folders. I know some apps will have issues if they or their components are installed here, but is this generally a bad idea?
    Thanks.

is this generally a bad idea?
No, but some backup software programs may not see them if they're put there. If you have more than one user account on the computer, the other accounts may not be able to save changes to them.

  • Is it a bad idea to use Task.Delay() in a polling function?

Is the following a bad idea considering the expense of Task.Delay()?
    async void WatchDog()
    while(!bDisposed)
    //check some things
    await Task.Delay(100);
    Hong

I've not used the DispatcherTimer, so I can't say anything from experience about how efficient it is or not. The few times I needed this sort of functionality in the few WPF apps I've done, I've used Task.Delay() ... I agree that it is certainly
a handy option. Most of my polling-type of work has been in non-UI situations (Windows Services), creating my own threading (and using Thread.Sleep()).
Ah, WinRT ... didn't know that was the platform you're writing for.
I've got no experience with WinRT. I don't know if there's a separate MSDN forum for that, the only thing I could find was a forum for Surface (https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/vstudio/en-US/home?forum=surfaceappdevelopment),
but I don't know if posting questions there would help you or not. Probably the WPF forum would work just as well (https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/vstudio/en-US/home?forum=wpf).
