Up grading to ML for MB aluminum

I have the  aluminum MB that first came out, and I'm currently running SL on it.   I also have a late 2010 MBA running ML that I use.  Please let me know if I should upgrade my MB, or it is more a hassle (slow-down).
This is of course assuming that I can upgrade my MB successfully, being that I still get this annoying "The product distribution file could not be verified.  It may be damaged or was not signed". --> I'm dealing with this in a separate discussion...:-(

Although... while the Core 2 Duo is getting a bit old (with Intel having just released their 2nd generation "i" series mobile processors)... your machine with 8GB of RAM and a Seagate Momentus XT hybird drive shouldn't be "sluggish". Are you running CPU intensive tasks? Just wondering if something else might be going on.

  • NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS upgrade for 24" aluminum iMac -- can it be done?

I have a one-release-previous 24" aluminum iMac (bought about 2 months before the newest one was released). I play a lot of World of Warcraft, and would love to upgrade the video card to the new NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS that works in the current 24" iMac.
Is there a way to do this at all? Apple solution, third-party solution, anything? I've heard rumors, but can't find out anything for sure.
    All help appreciated.

Yes, I think it's technically possible, but you'd have to purchase the stock part from an Apple specialist (a corporate store probably wont do it) and have them install it. Expect to pay $300+ for the part alone. Even then, there's no real guarantee that it will work, even though they do indeed use the same form factor. There may be power/thermal issues.

  • Where can I find a hardcase for my aluminum macbook (not the Pro, the original aluminum) ?

I have the aluminum 13 inch macbook that was only sold for less than a year starting in late 2008 i believe, i need a new case but all of the new cases are just slightly too big. I have no idea where to even look for a new one or what to even title my macbook as. any suggestions?
    thank you!

    Hi asingies,
Speck made hard cases for your machine but they do not appear to carry them on their website anymore. I was able to Google it and Amazon, eBay, etc. still have some in-stock. The part # you're looking for is

  • Fix for the Aluminum Wire Keyboard?

    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/bootcampupdate21forwindowsxp.html
do the new bootcamp drivers have fixes for the new aluminum keyboards?
Im setting up programs & applications using a new macpro, however eject key doesnt function, as i ahve multi-disk installations...and even listening to itunes/wmp11 volume keys dont work.
im just weary of drivers/updates as from previous built xp systems they seem to cause more harm than good and with reading alot of compatibility issues lately.
im wondering if there is any known good fix.
    anyone try the new drivers?
i just dont want to have to end up using 3rd Party key re-mappers.
i like to keep it clean and minimal.
    thanks guys!

I use the standard apple keyboard with my MacPro. When I installed 2.1 I got "Apple Kybd errors could not install" message. Subsequently the Eject Key worked for the upper dvd but Option|Eject wouldn't open the lower drive. After numerous installs I uninstalled 2.1 and installed Leopard 2.0 drivers. I got the same error message and the keyboard will work period. I run XP SP2 on its own internal drive.

  • What is the BEST usb audio interface for the aluminum 2.4 ghz macbook

i went to my local guitar center and ended up purchasing an m-audio interface. The thing blows, will not work with garage band at all. Drivers wont install correctly, and i have heard other mac users with this problem.
Im going to return it tomorrow and purchase something different, any suggestions?

There are no decent USB audio interfaces.
FIREWIRE IS A MUST for audio. Unless you are positive you will never be recording more than one instrument at a time you should consider a Firewire multi-channel audio device. Some examples of when you might need such a unit include recording a jam session utilizing more than two mics or maybe recording a drum kit with more than two mics (common). A multi-channel device will allow for much more flexibility in the long run.
All of the below audio manufacturers released NEW Firewire ONLY equipment in 2008.
    Digidesign
    Yamaha/Steinberg
    MOTU
    Lexicon
    PreSonus
    Apogee
    M-Audio
    TC Electronic
    Focusrite
There are no USB to Firewire adapters. (Desperate aluminum Macbook owners are looking, but it can't be done.) USB can not "keep up" with Firewire.
The NEW (early 2009) white Macbook has Firewire. (and the new NVIDIA graphics.)

  • Replacement Displays for 20" Aluminum iMac

As I sit here staring at another gray background website that goes from dark gray at the top to light gray at the bottom, I keep wondering "When is Apple going to do the right thing and replace these displays?" The poor quality display is the only thing keeping this computer from being the best one I've ever had.

If you're still within the 14 day period, return it and get a refund. So long as people keep buying the new 20" iMac, Apple has no incentive to improve the quality of it. I'm concerned about how Apple is going to honor its warranty for people who have the white iMac. If Apple can't repair them, it is contractually bound by its warranty to replace them with a functionally equivalent computer. In the past, that's always meant that a person would end up with a new model that was actually better than its predecessor, but that's not the case now. Since the supply of white iMacs is running out, Apple will eventually be replacing defective white iMacs with aluminum iMacs. However, because of their poor quality screens, especially on the 20" model, the new iMacs are functionally inferior to the white iMacs, thus leaving Apple with no way to honor its warranty unless it replaaces defective white iMacs with new MacPros and Cinema Displays.

  • Searching for a Aluminum Bumper Case with a front Bezel.?.

I am trying to find a minialist case with a front bezel for some type of screen protection, it doesnt have to be Aluminum but I don't want to cover the whole phone up either.  I have checked Apple stores, BB and the web the closest I can find is the Aluframe, it doesnt have much in the way of a front bezel and many reports of interference....Any feed back would be greatly appreated!

After much searching I settled on the AL13 Bumper http://www.thinkbym.com/collections/al13/gun-metal+iphone-5
Yes it is overpriced and there may be some interference but not as much as some, your mileage may vary.

  • Upgrade from 160 GB to 1 TB internal hard drive for MacBook Aluminum Late 2008?

I'm trying to upgrade my MacBook Aluminum (Not Pro) Late 2008 from 160 GB SATA Disk to 1 TB Western Digital WD10JPVT Scorpio Blue 1 TB 2.5" Internal Notebook Hard Drive. But I wasn't sure if this would work with my laptop and if it will fit. Can anyone help me out? Here is the links about the hard drive.
    http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=800

It may not work if it is a SATA III 6 Gb/s interface because your model only supports SATA II 1.5 and/or 3.0 Gb/s interfaces.

  • VESA adapter for 24" Aluminum iMac, doesn't fit

  • Suggestions for new HD for 2008 aluminum MB

Just found out my HD is dying and needs replacement. I have apple care but somehow apple is having problems finding it and need to wait until they open up after the july 4th weekend to sort things out with them.  If successful, then they'll just replace free of charge.
In the event I have to replace on my own, would then like to replace with larger HD.  I've already found youtube demo on how to actually replace it. I have a couple of questions:
    1. Can I replace with HD, say 500 gb or is there a max size?
    2. Recommendations on a specific HD or brand?
    3. I assume 7200 is better than 5400 rpm?
Thanks in advance for suggestions and Happy July 4th!

pick up a sata to USB cable, remove hard drive, install new hard drive, install OS, plug the old drive in via USB and drag and drop.

  • 60W vs. 85W charger for MacBook (aluminum)

Is there any reason why I can't use the 85W charging unit for a MacBook? I know it comes with the 60W version. Would the larger unit overheat the battery? I want to buy a second Magsafe charging unit to keep at the office and since they are both the same price would like to know if I would cause any damage by using the larger unit.
Also, noticing comments in another topic talking about battery cycles, isn't it bad to leave a computer on the charger 98% of the time? Shouldn't it be disconnected once the battery is fully charged? Is there circuitry that protects the battery if it's left on charge?

I sorta have the opposite question.
A friend and I both have Late 2008 Macbooks - but I have the Pro. I was using his 60W charger with no problems, except it was a little slow to charge - but I just needed a little top up.
I then switched to Vista to play Crysis and after about 30 minutes, between levels there was some silence and I heard a strange squeaking noise coming from the 60W adapter.
Needless to say I immediately unplugged it.
This then led to an interesting series of tests where we established that that on a scale of lots of noise to no noise, the 60W adapter behaved as follows:
Vista on MBP (Lots of noise)
Mac OS X on MBP (Some noise)
    Vista on MB (less noise)
Mac OS X on MB (no noise)
This is a little disturbing... For now I will only be using 85W adapters with my MBP, but what about vista on his MB? Could he fry his adapter?

  • What Power Adapter for 15" Aluminum PB?

I have a 15"PB (Apple M9422LL/A) with a power adapter that's gone squirrelly on me. (There's apparently a loose wire at the junction between the brick and the wire that goes to the computer.)
I'd like to get a compatible replacement, but the numbers on the brick are not recognizable as part numbers. Where can I get a replacement? (OEM not critical.)
There's one at Amazon that looks like it might work:

    Will it?

Yes the adapter in the link you provided will work.
OWC is another option, great company great products. They guarantee it:

  • After Effects for color grading

Hello. I requested as a new feature the next:
"A special timeline only for import EDL, with only three layers, for video A, B and a transition layer between both, and also perhaps several adjustment layers above, for professional color grading with effects as Colorista 2, for example. After Effects is more suitable for color grading than Premiere for its color management, precise control (mask, tracker, etc) and OpenGL realtime playback. Color grading in the current timeline is possible with only 10-20 layers, but with +100 layer is very dificult, almost impossible.
Also will be interesting the full screen playback mode as Premiere on desktop second monitor, for video preview."
Do you think this is a good idea?

Don't be too anxious to get an entire feature into AE as a single project. Back in the day when we cut and spliced film we worked with a maximum reel size of 1000 feet. That's 10 minutes. Even the colorist at the lab only worked on 1000 feet at a time. When It's time for me to color grade in AE I render to a nearly lossless or lossless 10 bit codec segments or scenes of the movie that go together so that I'm not dealing with every shot.
This is actually the same way I cut. I cut Scenes together as individual sequences then I drag all of the scenes into a new timeline that is the movie. If a scene needs work then I just open up that scene's timeline and make the changes. This is easier in the long run, faster, and especially easier when you're trying to fine tune the story and the performances. I know a lot of editors that work this way. I've never seen anyone with a bunch of experience just start at 00:00:00;00 and start cutting a show from the first shot to the last. I've never known anyone that was that good.

  • Optimum Settings for mini display to VGA

I just got a mini display to VGA cord for my aluminum mac book and hooked it up to my 37" Vizio LCD HD tv and was wondering what the best settings would be to put it on as far as the resolution goes.

ok and one other question, Is there a way to close the lid on my mac book and not have the display go away on my LCD tv? Because if i leave the lid open its fine but if i close it then the computer basically just goes to sleep.

  • Want to buy a case/cover for my macbook

i have a refurbished macbook, bought in november 2009 (from the online apple store) that i want to buy a case/cover for. The problem is everywhere i look, the cases are designed for the aluminum or macbook pro, and one seller on ebay that has the same cases available from the apple store, states that it doesn't fit the black or white versions, only aluminum and pro. Does anyone know who/where might make/sell cases for this version? Seems odd that even the apple site doesn't have them.
thanks in advance for any help!

    Hello bzclown,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
